Planning to build something similar and will be using flex seal on the inside so that if I ever needed I could literally spray out the inside with the hose.
Great video. The only thing I'd add is polyurethane coating on the floor board and 4-6 inches side boards all around. This to keep the cat pee from seeping into the wood. OR use oil paint but cat will hate the smell.
I am doing this with a cabinet I already owned. You could always find one for cheap on offer up or fb marketplace and just cut out and make a door if you don’t have all the tools money or supplies to create from scratch. All I needed to do was cut out a hole on the side of the cabinets and then drill in a curtain. I lined the cabinet, put a mat down, a litter box, fairy lights lined the walls and tada!!! Just looks like a normal cabinet ;)
The solution to litter flinging is to use pine pellets instead. They are non toxic (clay isn't), easy to sift sawdust and way cheaper than regular litter at pet stores. UA-cam it. No odor and no stepping on litter all over the floor. Love your vid though.
I hope you brushed on a sealant on the inside to protect the wood from moisture for those moments when the cat overshoots the litter box. Mine does and requires a hooded litter box. I bought a commercial cat toilet house from Amazon, which turned out to be particle board junk. I am returning it and building my own with dimensions big enough to house the hooded box I just bought. Thank you for the DIY video.
@@jweber222 Never heard of that. Sounds like a good idea. I just bought a structure on sale and found a bin almost the same size as the inside, so now I have to cut a hole in the bin, and I’m going to put white contact paper inside for over sprays.
Does he use it okay? I know cats prefer an open litter box. I used to have an enclosed one but my cat didn't like it. I am considering trying to figure something out, but she uses an 18in rubbermaid bin, because she sprays. I know you're supposed to have 2 litter boxes for 1 cat but I can barely figure out where to put her 1 litter box. I am not certain if that is why she sprays, but I have wondered if have 2 boxes would help not that I am willing to truly find out. I have considered making an enclosure and then building her cat tree on top of it or trying to double it up as something else similar to you guys have with plants. I live in an apartment and my bathroom is too small for her litter box. Any suggestions?
Both of my cats LOVE the enclosed liter boxes. We had one already made for our “resident cat” and when we adopted our newest cat, we just had the regular (open) box for him, but he’d use our residents cats enclosed box! So we made this 2nd enclosed box and they both go back and forth. I noticed our newest cat had problems using it, would sometimes poop outside the liter box, so we put up cardboard to train him & now he uses it perfectly! I’d recommend making it, but leaving the door open on the enclosure for a while until he gets use to it! I’ve noticed they really like their privacy though 😂😂
I do have another video on my channel of a simpler version of the enclosed box (link is in the description of this video), so maybe try that so you don’t go building an entire enclosure & your kitty not use it! Also, the other version completely opens on the side, which can help get your cat comfortable with using it before keeping it closed!
Hey! You're kind of using the wrong hinges for concealed hinges (which is what you realistically need). There are lots of types, with some a bit more carpentry-intensive, and some straight forward. Look for hinges used in kitchen cabinets, but specifically euro-hinges seem to be the best fit for what you're trying to do. Hope that helps!
@@NextJeneration you are not alone. :) I hate door alignment. I think I die a little inside every time. Also, look for "inset hinge" when you want the door to sit inside the frame. That will probably make your lives so much more pleasant haha
Beat me to it. Use a mortise bit on a router, trace your hinge location, then use the hinge as a gauge for the depth setting on your router. Go slow and you can easily cut out the hinge recess in a couple minutes
Thank you for your DIY tips. What a joyful couple, may God Almighty grant you for forever a joyful. healthy and prosperous life. Bless the parents who raised you.
They can be! Luckily my cats don’t mess with them. Except once, Shadow (our newest cat) tried getting in a pot and digging the dirt 😳🤦🏻♀️ it was a MESS!! So if you watch some of my latest videos, we’ve made a bunch of new shelves for all of our plants up high so they can’t get to them (and skinny shelves so they can’t fit on them 😂)
Thank you!! No, we really don’t smell it! And when our friends come over they ask where our litter box is 🤣 we also clean it often because we have 2 cats!
Anyone who has cats should really think about using wood pellet litter. Same price as normal litter but does not have the hideous ammonia smell when wet. So really good at cutting the smell, just scoop out the poop.
Ya, they will use one another s boxes. And the weird pawing at litter or fabrics, flinging & scratching is normal or instinctual or both for cat. Cats are kind of strange at times...
hi i would like to ask you some questions... i did a cat litter box and with the cats pee (ammonia) it turned out yellowish from white. I used clear varnish polyurethane.....now its very hideous maybe i can contact you via email as I dont know if I should resand it and paint it a darker colour or if it will end up the same again.
That’s crazy!! We’ve had ours at least 6 months with 2 cats and that hasn’t happened! We also have a 2nd enclosure that we’ve had years and haven’t had that happen. Maybe it was the varnish? That’s the only thing it sounds like you did different.
13:21 My future reaction from 1 year in the future when Im going to move out from my parent's house and move in with my friend and my furr baby and ging to build this cabinet litter box without my mom bitching about it. I wanted this for so long but she refuses to let me build this and hide the litter because she doesn't care if the litter is everywhere .... I can already see my future self reacting exactly lik this!
I want to make something like this but with ventilation/holes so I will probably use garden fencing or something and put plants on it as well. Its better for the cats respiratory system to not be enclosed with dust (depends on the litter type)
can you share the whole blue prints for this my girlfriend and i would love to bulid this. she already has two cats and i have one . we may bring a kitten from outside so this will be need for the both of us .
You should make them and sell it. I know you said you're not professionals but I would like one from you I am not handy like that so cannot make my own
@@NextJeneration I feel that I just replace the cabinet doors in my dads kitchen and bought the wrong hinges things were not fitting properly, ended up just using the old hinges lol
That song though. I felt that IN MY SOUL! Lol I’m going to have to finesse something like this because I have tried high wall and top entry and still, not at much as a high wall but still drives me crazy freshly out the shower and what is that. Litter on my freshly washed feet lol no thanks
It's been 9 months since this video, how about an update. Is he using it well? We added burlap material in layers on the outside of the litter box. Cats are lazy and the prince (ours princess) of leisure. So they like to clean their claws after their business. Also, my cat's didn't like the one side opening and we made two sides. Cats like escape route in case they need it.
They LOVE it!!! It does get messy on the outside, so we have it in a corner so there’s about 1 foot of space between the opening and the wall so the mess stays somewhat contained. I know they have litter mats you can put outside of it, but those have never worked for us. I’ve never seen them go all the way in to where they seem like they needed another opening. They do their business, turn around, and use their front paws to move the litter around. We’ve started using “Pretty Litter” and we (and they) LOVE IT! It’s about the same price as the regular litter we were using but no smell, no dust, their urine changes color depending on their health and it only has to get dumped and changed out once a month!! It’s amazing, highly recommend.
could you guys could have made the same doorway the cats get through as the door to open to clean the litter as well? that was there was no need to create a door in the back so there would be no open spacing in the back except for the door where the cats enter. idk if I explained to an easy understanding :/ the hinges would be on the side where the cats enter instead of the other side basically. just realized I typed a lot for nothing but ima keep since I spent the time to type this all out lol great diy tho!! ty ty guys def an inspiration you two!! love it!
Yes I understand! But we wanted the hole (where they get it) closer to the fireplace so when they jump out, the litter on their paws doesn’t have much space to spread all over the floor. But had we put the door on that same side, there wouldn’t have been enough space to open the door. Does this make sense? So yes, of course you can do it how you explained, it just made more sense for where we were putting it to do it that way.
Also, the cats would probably swing the door open when going in and out since there’s no latch. And we store the scooper in there on the door, so we wouldn’t be able to if the door was the cat hole.
I would definitely paint the inside (maybe before it’s all put together). Wood is very porous and will hold odors, urine etc.
Planning to build something similar and will be using flex seal on the inside so that if I ever needed I could literally spray out the inside with the hose.

Yes! Our “simpler” version video of this, we do the same thing! We got a cabinet and cut a hole and added a command hook inside for the scooper.
The solution to litter flinging is to use pine pellets instead. They are non toxic (clay isn't), easy to sift sawdust and way cheaper than regular litter at pet stores. UA-cam it. No odor and no stepping on litter all over the floor. Love your vid though.
Thanks! We’ve been using wheat litter and LOVE it!
I would say that but from the video he looks like on cat iPad that always wanted to cover his food and his litter box he didn't want it seen
Not all cats will use pine litter. One of my cats uses it and the other will pee on rugs until I put a second litter box with regular litter
some brands still track (if your cat is industrious enough) but moving to pellets was still GREAT!

Get some redgard shower sealant and it will brush right on and dry solid

I lined mine with white contact paper before I put the litter box in it.
For hinges to sit flush you can either chisel or just sand it down after outlining

You can use a dremel or a router and chisel to make the hinge mortise so that the hinge will be flushed down.

I used spring hinges for my doggie stairs with storage
Love it. Does it help reduce the odor noticeably?
When guests come over they always ask (while standing right next to it), “where’s your litter box?!” So I’d say it definitely reduces odor too!
Put the hinge where you want it. Trace out the hinge w a pencil. Use a hammer and a chisel to carve it out.
how did you manage to get the cats to not go near your plants? I heard plants can be toxic for cats?

The hole for the cats to get in: 10” x 8” The actual door on the back that opens for litter box: 21” x 15”

To use a hinge, you need to use a hammer and chissel to allow the hinge to recess.
😍
I noticed that the reason why my cat wipes her paws on the walls/cloth and stuff after using the litter is to get excess dust of her paws
That makes sense!!
They haven’t done it since we switched to wheat litter
You can always use wood filler and paint it after you'll never see it
Use a chisel and a planet for the recess for the hinge.
Planer lol not planet
Thank you!!!
The only plane that would work for this is a router plane. Most non- woodworkers don’t have those. Just use a sharp chisel.
