How much Plasti Dip do you need to spray on your car to make it peelable and durable? Is it about coats, or about how many gallons? What if you spray light or medium coats vs wet and overlapping coats? This video will show you that it's more about how much product goes on the car vs how many coats you apply.

Never thought of that. That DYC sprayer might be good, but if you go by Fonzie's biceps diameter, it sure must be heavy. Maybe he sprays a lot of flakes, I heard that's the heaviest of the finishes.

Don't be like Fonzie and miss leg day. At the gym, you can tell right away who does biceps and nothing else, and people who train legs, and every other muscle group. Look at his chest, traps and shoulders. You can tell he's just a bicep guy, literally trains biceps and nothing else. Don't be that clown, they all get laughed at, in front of their face and behind their backs. Leg Day should be twice a week, minimum.

Thanks for this video. I would be interested to see one further test. Take the same 2 sections of a hood. And a given amount of product for each section. Spray that set amount of product in the two different styles until you are out of material, regardless the number of coats. Then, measure film build and test peelableness.
There is something called transfer efficiency. No matter what, 100% of the material isn’t going to make it to the panel. This is overspray. I’d be interested to see how much the spray styles affect transfer efficiency, and how that could also translate into usage (I.e. using a medium spray technique might actually require more material).

While i have no disagreement in essence on this particular application tutorial. I must admit, as a paint and body tech of almost 12 years, the application of what you referred to as "wet" coats and so on, really comes down to the understanding of "material flow in regards to flash time"
Which to me is basic knowledge, though for some can be confusing. All sprayable coatings have different characteristics on how they "flow out" depending on how they're "laid" or applied. Then they're all also different on how their application and flow can be affected by surroundings. I.E. temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and so on. The best advice to lay any paint coating comes down to observation and understanding of chemical reaction. It's rather easy to get right, but at the same time, it's just easy to get wrong. Take your time, be observant and try to teach yourself how the product you're using reacts in your own environment. Then you or anybody else can lay material well to maximise the benefits of products being used.

Team DYC - be interesting to know what settings you're using on the gun for the wet vs medium coats? Like how many "clicks" from closed - there's quite a range on the gun. I'm usually 20 clicks in or so when I think I'm doing wet coats. But it sure looks like you're deeper than 20 clicks in on yours...

How would you say this applies with wheel kits? They don't really have an option to select the size of your wheels, so smaller wheels really get a thick coating, and if you only dip the outside of the rims it's going to be even thicker if you use all of the cans provided.

So in all of your application video's that I have watched I haven't seen one on how to maintain your hardware during an application. Such as how do you treat your sprayer in-between coats? If you take the tip off and soak it, then it might cause the initial few sprays to not adhere properly, but if you just leave in alone I assume it will start to dry and then cause uneven spraying once you get back to work.. Do you have a video on this that I have missed?

appreciate the video, but why would you cut the intervals between coats without mentioning how long you waited?
"...not allowed to fully wet out..." and what the heck does that even mean? Why add needless complexity to an explanation for what is merely applying thick wet coats vs thin coats? or did I miss something?

Seeing how easy it is to peel the thicker coat makes me wonder how durable this stuff is in the real world? How easy is it for your coat to accidentally peel off if you, for example, ran into some tree branches or something that got snagged on an edge?

I'm just getting around to this video, lol. I sprayed my '74 baja bug with flat black, then then several other parts were sprayed matte clear with burnt copper pearl. I specifically picked DYC because if I invested a huge amount of money into a vehicle that was going to go off road and... hit branches.. it would ruin a mega expensive paint job. Whereas with DYC I can fix it for just a few $$$. I've actually put this to the test as I've taken my little beast off road many times slinging plenty of mud. The dip has held up great!!!

Good video, but I think you have gotten your units of thickness mixed up. 18mm thick? I don't think so. 1.8mm thick, probably. Still great video :)

He is using imperial measurements. This is the US, not the EU. Millimeters is decimal, he wouldn't switch between systems.
In US or imperial terms; A mil is a measurement that equals one-thousandth of an inch, or 0.001 inch.
