- DeltaTrip Report flying from San Francisco to New York JFK onboard one of the Delta Boeing 757s, in Delta One class, on a fantastic winter day.
A very comfortable flight on my first time flying in Delta One, the highest class that Delta Airlines offers onboard their aircrafts. And that's not all! On top of that, we flew on the Boeing 757, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful airplanes ever built.
We departed on time from San Francisco, heading northeast, which gave us some amazing views of the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. After overflying Sacramento we entered Nevada, crossing all the desert, flying towards Utah. We left Salt Lake City on our left as we headed to the Rocky Mountains, leaving Denver on our right. We then flew over South Dakota and Iowa before reaching Chicago. We left Toronto on our left and Washington on our right, just before starting descent and approaching New York JFK, where we landed ahead of schedule.
About the onboard service, a selection of 3 warm plates was ofered. I went for the cheese quiche, which came with some fresh fruit, a croissant with butter & marmalade, and some kind of dessert that I wasn't able to identify. Everything was tasty, but for the top service of Delta... well, I felt like it was just a normal meal offered in nice plates. I was sincerely expecting more when flying in Delta One. I'm not saying it was bad, actually it was good, but it was not amazing. But when the average price of this ticket is 1.000-1.400 USD... well, you expect something extraordinary.
The seat was really good, converting into a full-flat bed. In general, the Delta One cabin, located at the front of the plane, was really comfortable. Even though the Boeing 757 is a single-aisle airplane and the seat config was 2-2, the space was huge for everyone.

You didn't mention that you would have had lounge access as well so despite the breakfast offerings you did have an opportunity to fill up before the flight!
I tried to enter the Sky Club... but the queue in front of it didn't allow me to enter. I didn't say anything about it on the video because I didn't want to be so negative.
Although I don't fly, I love being invited to be with everyone who flies and makes these videos. I especially like to see the cuisine aboard . The scenery . Thank you for the tour 😊.
The 757 is awesome! Excellent performer and stable airframe that Boeing is failing to replace at its peril.

I have flown in many 757's , Delta is the best. So is Delta One, flown many times too.👍
The Boeing 757 is amazing... but after flying so many airlines and so many times... I can say that Delta is not even on my Top10. And I can say that I enjoy flying with them, maybe because I enjoy a lot flying over the USA... but the Delta Airlines onboard service is not good at all.

Boeing 757 - made back in the day when Boeing made great aircraft. Don't know why they don't modernise it and re - introduce it. 767 was good too and the 747 was the daddy of all aircraft which brought affordable long haul flight to ordinary people. Excellent video as usual.
Becaus the B757 production finished in 2004! It's been more than 2'0 years!
All the production lines, the mechines used to build them, companies that were building pieces... no longer exist. Is not viable at all =/

Thank you very much for your videos. Your emphasis items (looking out of the window frequently throughout the flight and catching a glimpse of where you're flying over!) style is how I appreciate a flight review to the fullest. So I really enjoyed this one! But was also deeply impressed a few days ago with your MH Kuala Lumpur to London, Economy Class report.
You paid the cost of more "real estate" (aka space) on the airplane. Evidently you did not make use of some of the other advantages available to you with the higher price - you may re-book at any time, possibly without additional charge (like in the old days), you may take 2 pieces of checked luggage in addition to your hand luggage, you may accept the pre-flight lounge access with finger food, some of which is quite enticing! I know because as Delta Gold status customer I may not gain lounge access between flights domestic to domestic (even when flying DeltaOne) and also no longer when flying Economy International/Intercontinental to Domestic. What you are REALLY paying for: your "peace and quiet"!
Yes, the seat was probably old and worn. The airplane was a "well aged" Classic (and I very much enjoy the feel of the 757 compared to the "more rigid" 320-series' Airbuses). Since DL doesn't know on what markets they will next deploy a 757 on (long-thin new international route?) they won't invest in the hard product because people are always willing to pay a premium to stay segregated from the traveling public at large. What you will see more of on domestic - guaranteed - is the 737-900/900ER which is inferior equipment in every respect! The 767 is an old Bird by now, akin to the 757 and will likely quietly disappear on Transcon services eventually.
The food appears to have been an especially lousy example for a 4+ hour flight, probably designed to wean you off airline food rather than expect a great food experience. In any case you should be able to expect more on such a Premium ("Flagship") route (DLs West Coast base is not San Francisco but they must compete with "Home Carrier" United Airlines). But Delta advertise to the Big Money: choose to forfeit your meal for the flight! I'm not kidding!
Food by any US Airline is substandard, if not outright nasty. Let the menu dictate - on Delta International you get a card in One, on Air France Affaires and Lufthansa Business you get a multiple page catalog, in Air France La Premiere or Lufthansa First Class ... well, it's a different league!
As a former Star Alliance stalwart customer (Lufthansa, United) due to home base Munich, after moving to the US-East Coast in 2003, I became a Delta customer due to bases in NYC (LGA, JFK airports, EWR way out of my way).
The alternatives: my "hometown" airport (New Haven Connecticut - code HVN). Cannot count the times (and sorely miss) the US Airways New Haven - Philadelphia - Munich rotations, the Eastbounds were a perfect, seamless connection, coming back/Westbound there were a couple of dead hours in PHL. Domestic: I can use AVELO from New Haven but must handle very tight seating, bearable only on max. 2-hour flights.
Now that the merger is "off", try Spirit (out of LGA and EWR) and book the Big Wide Seat(s) at surcharge. Dine before departure or after arrival outside the airport and splurge on what you saved. Spirit - You have to pay extra for everything else, especially bags. But you know that ahead of time...
Other International: Condor operated Providence RI - Frankfurt summer rotations over several years (perhaps 2024?), check-in/security and arriving at the gate: 10 minutes, tops! Customs coming into PVD could take an hour or so bc Boston would only send two officers out for 230 or so passengers...Hmm.
Going to Europe my new secret is: Milano-Malpensa! Yes, you walk a mile at that airport before you're out of it. But airfare prices remain in check bc 6 airlines serve Malpensa to/from JFK or EWR if you count United. Found a small carrier - NEOS Airlines - who operate Boeing 787 Dreamliners with a "Premium Class", comparable somewhere between Lufthansa Premium Economy and Lufthansa Business Service. But with the "human touch", far friendlier, less mechanical! You want real food - Italian and International Gourmet? - Take NEOS Premium! And pay less than this Delta flight you just experienced! Roundtrip! Number Two: Emirates. A380, nothing less (don't recommend the 777 nearly as much). Pay for the Lounge (c. EUR 95, it's great value for money, includes office/printouts and shower). Economy is quite bearable, Premium Economy is posh!
Can I connect to Munich to/from Malpensa when I have to? Easyjet airfares start at EUR 25 one-way but bags are extra.
So the discerning traveller has choices. I'll look forward to your review on JetBlue's Mint Service!

Qué alegría me has dado subiendo esto, ya que en 15 días vuelo yo el 757 con Delta de Atlanta a Miami (por desgracia no en Delta one), y va a ser mí primera vez volando en Delta y en el 75… Por supuesto tengo las expectativas muy altas ya que de Delta me han hablado muy bien, y el 75 pues bueno, es el 75, y si no lo vuelo ahora yo creo que me voy a arrepentir jajajaja
Pd: En 15 días, cuando lo vuele, igual cambio de opinión, pero para mi gusto el 75 tampoco le gana al MD80… También te digo, son aviones pensados para cosas distintas. ;-)

Te deseo un gran vuelo! Para probar el 757 seguro será un vuelo increíble. Volando en economy el ratio valor/precio es mucho mejor, sin duda. Y tal vez en otras rutas el producto Delta One sea mejor... pero es que lo de este día casi rozó el insulto...

This aircraft N707TW is special because it was originally delivered to TWA and later acquired by Delta due to engine communality vs AA the airline that acquired TWA.
Love the Delta 757 but the Delta One at $1400 🧐-too pricey for that food but as one who loves dish ware I loved the shape of the coffee cup 😊 All in all I do love Delta ❤🙋🏼♀️👍🏻🇺🇸And of course all the fantastic views from the plane ✈️
The thing is that all the airlines use the "premium food" as part of the advertising for their premium classes... Delta does it as well, of course... but the food is anything but premium...

I have flown on Delta’s 757 in first class twice, but not with Delta One. I have also flown Delta One on one of their A330-900 Neos. The Delta One on the A339 was MUCH better than the one you experienced on this 757. It’s still nowhere near the top of the list in terms of a global business class product, but it is much better than what you experienced in your video. Glad you bought it with miles and not out of pocket!
I'll soon fly on the Delta One B767-400 that should have the newwest product... i really hope it will be much better than this!

Catering surely was somewhat poor but concerning the comfort and space in the seat it was worth it.
The catering was terrible for the price they put... the rest, yes, quite ok for a 5h business class I guess. The seats were little old though.

I am surprised you didn't pre order your breakfast from Delta. Usually offered 1 week before your flight. And that you didn't go to the Sky Club at SFO airport, it's fabulous

As someone who lives in the U.S, I get tired of flying U.S airlines. Wanna fly good airlines? Sure that’ll be $1.000+ or.. you can fly Spirit with no recline for $500. Ridiculous prices.

$1400 is more expensive then a round trip in economy from USA to Indian sub-continent on the the big 3 Mid East carriers.
I guess people use miles to travel in Delta One like you did.
The most beautiful aircraft ever made? That would be the Boeing 707. Those low bypass JT3D engines roar and the antenna on top of the vertical stabilizer gave it an awesome look.

Completely different markets and class of service. US trans cons are a premium business markets so not really comparable. Business class to India would easily be 5-7K
The prices are just insane... If at least the service would be something close to that price... but what they offered on this flight was just a joke...

I wasn't robbed, I paid this flight mainly with miles so the ammount of USD that I paid was very small... But the price of 1,400USD is the real one that the majority of passengers pay.

Would I pay $1400 to fly business in that route? Definitely not! As someone mentioned already in the comments, flying (in general) is becomming more and more expensive every day. Anyway, that’s for sharing the experience! 😊

Was your negative title choice designed to attract more viewers? $1400 is a pretty standard fare for transcon business class with lay-flat seating, and you were able to pay with frequent flier mileage. How many miles did it take to buy this seat? I bet the mileage spent is what makes this seat feel, justifiably, so darned unreasonable. Sounds like your flight was pretty nice, and it was on-schedule, not always a given in and out of NYC. For longer domestic flights, I always try to find a widebody, even if it involves switching departure airports. Widebodies have a nicer ride and the lay-flat seats have direct aisle access. I’ve found that I can make my seating area darker on widebodies, too, so I can have a nice little bed to sleep in even if there is daylight. Delta’s complimentary snacks at the gate are such a nice touch. Even though U.S. airlines’ service can be inferior to some foreign ones, I really appreciate a known quantity and the familiarity makes me feel like I am already home when I step onboard. If traveling on vacation, I am more likely to try a foreign carrier out of curiosity, at least in one direction.

Delta is by far my favorite airline to fly on domestically and internationally! Nice job reviewing Delta One, and yes, it's way too expensive. It's nice to see you do a 757 report, I was on the Delta 757 back in May :)

😬😬😬 1.4k en first class siendo un 757, un iconico pero muy antiguo veo que no ofrece mucho, con ese precio es mejor pillarse una buena clase business!
Creo que hasta me sorprendio el business de jetblue!
Si es que esto es lo que en Europa llamaríamos clase business...

The business/first class tickets price is ridiculous since Covid.
Eg the return business tickets from Spain to China via any 3rd country Airlines (like Air France or Qatar) during low season cost around 1800-2000 euros before 2020, I usually pay 1300-1500 euros for BCN-CDG-PEK or BCN-DOH-PEK with good discount. Now it cost at least 2500 euros. Basically for the same price I can only fly premium economy instead of Business.
For economy class, it’s around 400 euros before and 600 euros now. For me it’s not ideal but does make sense considering the inflation.
(If you think it’s about politics, It’s not only China but all the Europe-Asia routes, like Tokyo or Singapore)
There are indeed several reasons could raise the cost for airlines. But I have the impression that we’re not only paying for the product. The price for business or first class is just ridiculous compared to economy.

It’s a little strange to use food to judge the airline and value for money. I don’t fly business to eat, but to get a relaxed comfortable flight
The food is a very important part of the whole service. Even the airlines use it to advertise their premium products.
The fact that you don't value it, doesn't mean that the one that Delta offered on this flight was extremely bad.
In any case, the outdated entertainment system, the poor catering quality, the old seats... make me think 1400$ is not worth it at all (yesterday I checked again and apparently the base price is now 1500$).

Un avión que Boeing debió haber sacado un remplazo o regenerado con materiales sintéticos mejores motores y más eficientes para competir con el A321 XLR se está quedando atrás , muy buen avión , y me gusta más el 727
El B757 cesó su producción en 2004. En aquel momento no era posible (ni viable econonicamente) desarrollar nada con nuevos materiales. El B757 se dejó de producir porque no se vendía.
Se desmantelaron sus líneas de producción y todo lo asociado (como es normal) y se dejó espacio en las fábricas para la producción de otros modelos. Volver a desarrolarlo años después no es viable econonicamente. Sino, Boeing lo habría hecho.
