This song can be used for not just invoking sadness and loss, but also triumph and hope.
Imagine this song being played over a scene where a band of soldiers have just heard that the enemy has surrendered and the war is over. They won. They are cheering, crying, hugging and celebrating. Their struggle is finally over, they can go home and try to rebuild the lives they left behind. And above them the clouds part and for the first time in a while, the sun shines through bathing the world in warmth in light.
I really love that dimple
It's a time for them to finally reflect on all they've done and witnessed. but there, as you said, is always a light on the other end, always a way to be happy in a time of sadness.
Came here after watching Fellowship for the gazillionth time. The bridge of Khazad Dum sequence might be one of the greatest in the history of fantasy. And then you're hit with this chilling song immediately after... I'm a big dude in his 30s and it brings me to tears every time I watch it, without fail.
I'm crying right now with you brother.
Copious tears. Soundtrack was just perfection in these three movies.
I will never stop loving these movies
All three movies are absolutely perfect. Perfectly casted and thoroughly enjoyable.
When I was a child and went to see this in theaters, I hadn't read any of the books yet and had no idea that Gandalf came back as Gandalf the White, so I was feeling that same grief and despair the Fellowship had been feeling in that moment. I had no words to put to it at that age, but it was profound. To this day, the emotions this draws out of me are so immense I get lost again, just like I had the first time I heard it.
This song makes me cry every time...it's just so sad...soul-wrenching.
Rhoda Albers Truth be told, I cry whenever I hear this
It does make me cry, that's truly powerful music :)
Yup. Even after all these years. The story and the score is timeless.
Best ever cast for a wizard. I couldn't imagine anyone else playin Gandalf, and the music was just phenominal. Especially with the scene it was applied!
At one point, I think Christopher Lee was considered to play the role as Gandalf.
i could watch this movie over and over
This song gives me goosebumps every time! It’s 9:37 pm I have to work tomorrow but I‘ll start watching the movie now ❤️
Edit* the part of gandalfs fall in the movie was sad af but the part in the book was heartbreaking!
Beautiful. I just love this one.
So do I, glad you like it, Dracolyra :)
MusicShape This one have a special place in my heart. I love the story of Gandalf.

0:19 . When you get trickshoted by your friend. 😅
+Dracolyra Vega IKR!!! I am the BIGGEST LOTR FAN and out of all of the hundreds of characters in the books and movies, Gandalf will always be the best.
"fly you fools", gandalf said. then, he falls into the fires of hell. he doesn't die instead he tries to fight off the demon that put him in there. at last its gandalf victory
( •-•) all these Man of steel comments... this thing will forever be from LOTR no matter where it appears
I'm just glad that people are listening to this again and commenting.
“Give them a moment, for pity’s sake!”
"By night, these hills will be swarming with orcs."
Aragorn: Working to get Sam and the others up. "Frodo?"
Frodo: ....
Aragorn: ....
Played this song when our Cleric died in a D&D run.
He was the only "good" character of the party, and it felt very... sorrowful, to have our only anchor of light go out to save us. He did what was best, not for himself, but for our party and the world as a whole, and when he died, we all marked a moment of pause. What were we going to do, now that the one guiding us was gone? Would we fall to the charms of evil he had worked so hard to prevent us from hearing?
Rest in Peace, Ciel Lucianna.
I love LOTR Soundtrack.
