I've been watching all the whining on various social media Starlink groups about the price/plan changes. If someone can afford to "island hop" or use it in their Cessna, I don't think they get to bitch about the price of Starlink. For me, I use it to make money, so it's a no-brainer. I'm not going to drive around in my $100,000 truck and R.V. and then complain about the means with which I afford it. Does the price increase suck? Maybe, but no one forced me to buy it. Good job to get this video out so quickly!
I just bought the $299 dish and 50Gb plan because we only use it a few times a month during camping season. After getting the dish setup, it took an update and used 2.3Gb of my 50Gb plan. I wasn't too happy about that, so hopefully that doesn't happen often. We do use a Onn Pro streaming box, that I turn on data saver mode and we can stream video with a little less than 1Gb an hour. That is just the little trick I use to conserve data.
Great update Chris! I guess it all boils down to who and where you are, and how you use Starlink. Some will love it, some will hate it. - As uslal - Cheers!
I see and understand a lot of the negative comments about this, however I'm excited for the changes. At least in my situation, I'm using the Residential plan and changing my address once I get to where I'm going, but should I need the in-motion capabilities, its' worth (to me) the extra coin of switching to the Roam plan. I'm keeping it in my back pocket for just that scenario. Thanks for the updates!
once that happens it will drive down the cost. I remember my first cell phone in the early 90's. $40.00 a month to have it and $1.50 a minute to use it.
I just received that dreaded email about the price update. I was excited that I might be able to got to the 50GB plan. Checked usage for the past weeklong camping trip. 183GB. Guess that idea is out 😢
A little effort towards data management can deliver big results. Or you can combine Starlink with an unlimited cellular plan for the best of both worlds.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter we were in an area with no cellular service for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Most of the data was streaming TV in the evening. We only unpause service if cellular service is not available or adequate. Your information on RV options has helped tremendously
We have found that live streaming TV apps are horrible for data consumption. Watching UA-cam and Netflix, Disney plus on a reasonable 720p or lower uses much less data
Just checked emails & my Starlink account. I have Residential + Portability and there's no announcement of price or plan changes. Glad I was an early adopter!😊
Oh wow, I noticed the Roam price increase. I just returned from a three-week trip and found that my Verizon Wingard, at $108 a month, worked great, so I didn’t need Starlink. This service can be started and stopped when needed. I was considering using the Starlink 50GB plan as a backup for areas without cell service. I’m guessing you can’t switch to the unlimited plan on the go.
Changing to the 50 GB plan and using Starlink as a backup is a great option and yes you can change to the unlimited Roam plan anytime during your billing cycle and you are just charged the prorated difference of prices for the remaining days in your billing cycle and you receive unlimited data from that point. Going up in price in plan, the change happens immediately and your are charged the prorated difference. Going down in price in plan, the change happens at your next billing cycle. So depending on when you switch plans, it could come out cheaper depending on when you make the change.
@@Somebodysomewheresometime Speeds range from 5 to 15 Mbps, depending on your cell signal strength. I’m currently using LTE, and I imagine 5G would be faster. I’m not sure what the cost of 5G is with Winegard, but they do offer a 5G router and antenna setup for RVs.
Just bought the Roamlink to supplement Starlink. Thinking the same thing as you. Between 100GB of Roamlink and 50GB of Starlink I'm probably covered for most months. Plus, I have an unlimited Calyx 5G hotspot to fall back on after that. That would save me $115 a month.
While this seems like bad news on the surface, the addition of the pausible $50 of 50GB plan is great! Yes, 50GB isn't much, but the additional data is the exact same price as the first 50. Anyone who uses less than 150GB per month (ie, the equivalent cost of the old unlimited $150 plan) will actually save money with the 50GB+ plan, and I'm guessing the majority can stay below that. When we both worked full time with lots of Zoom meetings for both and lots of UA-cam videos (720 res), we never went over 100GB in a month. And you pause the service at the end of each month if not needed at that campsite and unpause as soon as it's needed. So I'm pretty happy about this!
We have not seen any price impacts or any other impacts to those grandfathered into portability and now there is a bigger price gap between these services, it makes it even more beneficial to hang on to that grandfathered plan.
Not a bit happy about them raising the price during my first full month of usage! After paying $599, then picking the $150 plan and boom they raise it to $165 due to options or “improvements” that I don’t need or want!!!! Just cancelled my fiber cable internet…..
Unfortunately with no contracts, Starlink is able to make changes any time they feel like it and this certainly isn't the first time they have done that and they probably will again.
anal musk is using the skynet system to line his own pockets based on the connectivity we all think we want, his $$$ appetite is bottomless & will never stop.
I never bought into the starlink garbage still have my KVH and it works great prices have dropped because of starlink though so Im happy I told you guys this would happen they throw the hook out get you in and then raise prices
So I have a system at home that’s costing $90.00 a month but I got the message that it’s changing. I have a second Gen 2 system that I plan to use this winter in the southwest. It looks like I’ll be paying $165.00 a month but I’ll be able to roam, drive down the freeway. I’ll only be using it for 6 months and then shutting it down.
Most likely the email you received on the $90/month plan was just a TOS notification that the name was changing. They changed the name from Standard back to Residential or in your case Residential - Discounted. Yes the Roam - Unlimited is $165/month but also keep in mind if you are a lower data user, you may benefit from using the Roam 50 GB plan for $50 month and if you stay under 165 GB a month, it still comes out cheaper. You can also switch between plans.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter it probably will be lower when I’m traveling but at home I’ve been doing 588 GB to 1.01 TB. I really don’t want to go over a limit, from past experience with cell data it gets expensive.
Got the email 9/10/24 that says (see below). Have Mini on 50GB plan. Price Remains $50 , No price increase for 50GB plan. Thank you for being a Starlink customer. We are making changes to your service plan to deliver an improved Starlink experience. Effective immediately, you will have access to the following features with Starlink Roam: In-Motion Use International Travel Coastal Coverage An updated Terms of Service will go into effect starting 10/10/2024.
Reference the Starlink Mini…I travel to the Philippines about 3 weeks a year, can I use the Starlink Mini while I am in the Philippines and how will I do it? Thanks…great channel!
I got an email from Starlink at 2:01am. It talked about the plan features changes for Starlink Roam like the removal of the in-motion usage restriction. What it DIDN'T tell me is that there was a $15/month price increase. It says nothing about that, so imagine my surprise watching this video. For a guy and a company I hold in very high regard for the most part, that's pretty lame IMHO. Please don't tell me all the great new features of the plan and then conveniently leave off the bad news.
Most likely your service is currently paused so you would not be affected by the price change until you unpaused the service. The email alerted those with currently active service that the price change would occur on Oct 10th.
Ahh, I’d bet that’s it. I also received an email with the price increase, but my service is currently paused. It’s unfortunate, but still a good option for me. I would like to see some competition.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Yes, that's true. Having just recently purchased a Peplink Max BR1 Pro 5G and a T-Mobile Business Internet Unlimited SIM, life's been pretty good living on the towers. Even in Montana so far. Not going to call it perfect by any stretch, but it's allowed me to keep Starlink on pause. Looks like I'll be more reluctant than ever to come off pause. Seems like Starlink saw T-Mobile AWAY go to $160 and said, "Hold my beer!".
I believe you are incorrect on the boating aspect. On the plan, it says Specifically, subscribers can receive Starlink access “up to 12 nautical miles off the coast and for a period of up to 2 months,”
@MobileInternetResourceCenter no kidding cruisers go out past 12 miles, I was referring to the video at about 4:20 wheen it's said only coastal waters not ocean travel.
it remains unclear the 12nm aspect… the wording in starlink FAQs can be interpreted two ways (or more) in the context of australia coast.. there are islands that are territorial to australia, that are >12nm from coast… so unclear how where the “12nm” test is applied. certainly i didnt read it that this is only applicable to locations outside my home country?
I just bought the standard Gen 3 kit this past Saturday. We plan to possibly use it for our RV when we travel & at our seasonal lake spot. So I opted for the residential plan instead of the mobile plan to just try it out at both locations to see how it worked for us. So.my question is can I switch to the 50gb plan now from the residential & would they prorate or credit the remaining for the residential plan to the account? Or will the change have to wait until the end of the current billing cycle?
When going up in price on a plan, the change takes place immediately and the user is charged the remaining month a prorated amount. When going down in price, the change happens at the next billing cycle and there is no prorating. So if you switch from residential to the 50GB plan, it will happen at the next billing cycle with no prorating.
Many boaters bought the Roam Mobile Unlimited plan for the Priority Data toggle. This feature gave them access to data 12mn offshore. Without this feature many of them will likely return to the cheaper mobile BB alternatives.
What happens if you venture past 12nm? Does it shut off or just get slower? I am planning to coastal cruise around Australia but will more likely be 20 to 30nm off shore most times.
I work on a ship and use Starlink Regional, paying only for what I use and pausing the service when I disembark (28 days at home, 28 days on the ship). I will have to cancel it; the price increase is too steep... I hope they resume offering ocean data services for regular people, not just for those with money or companies.
While you can no longer just opt-in to Mobile Priority Data from the cheaper Roam plans, you are prepaying for some Mobile Priority Data and then once that is exhausted, you would continue to pay $2/GB which is the same cost as before. The main difference is you just can't control exactly when that original bucket of Mobile Priority data your plan has (such as 50GB) is used when the billing cycle first starts but with some discipline on how you used it an the beginning of the billing cycle, it may not be that much more expensive for you.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Thank you for your response. I have two questions: Can I use my standard antenna dish with the Mobile Priority plan? Is it possible to cancel the Mobile Priority plan for one month (28 days at home) and then re-sign/resume it for another 28 days at sea? My current billing cycle starts on the 14th of each month. By managing this, could I reduce the monthly cost from $250 to $125?
Yes, you can use the Standard antenna with the Mobile Priority plan. You can pause your Mobile Priority plan. When you pause, service continues until the end of your billing cycle. When you unpause, you are charged a prorated amount based on the number of billing days remaining. So it would depend on when you went to sea in relation to your 14th billing date.
Very informative. With the 50gb Roam package, I am curious what happens when you go more than the 12 nm off shore when sailing. Do you lose data completely or does it just get slow? I plan to cruise around Australia and would average 20 to 30nm offshore.
We have heard from many who currently have their plan paused got no pricing info in their notice. We are highly confident when unpaused, current / new pricing will apply.
Unfortunately Starlink makes changes that often affect a larger pool of customers. The latest changes really change things for boaters that island hop in coastal waters and only make brief passages between them. The plus is now the $50/month 50GB plan is available to any hardware so if you have other options to stay connected, Starlink could be come a better backup service to cellular and help keep the overall costs down.
In-Motion was already a part of my Mobile-Regional plan. I just had to switch the priority data toggle and pay 2 bucks a gig, because that toggle not only turned on mobile priority data, but also included use in-motion use with my high performance flat kit per the (old now, I'm sure there's a new version after this change) terms of service. So now I simply will be able to not have to use the toggle and pay the 2 bucks a gig. Not sure it's worth 15 bucks more a month to simply not have to toggle that switch, because our in-motion use never equated to more than a half gig or so in a day when my wife worked while I drove. And we only needed to do that a few days a month. But I guess it is a convenience nonetheless to not worry about making sure we turned the priority data back off when we stopped moving. That did cost us extra a couple times because we forgot it.
Correct, you can no longer turn Priority data on/off.. which means in motion use will always be available. But you also won't be able to get priority data when you desire it.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Yup. I understand it. It's convenient to not have to worry about the toggle. We're full-time RV lifers; working and traveling the states while taking in the sights. But, I'm truly getting less for my money now for sure. As you say, that's the downside to no contracts. Granted, we don't ever really have a need for the priority data speeds. In places that we may get throttled due to residential plans chewing up all the bandwidth, there's usually good cellular and we have a dual SIM hotspot to take the role in those situations. Thanks for the video. I was curious what all was happening in the change. You seemed to cover it all.
One option if you have multiple internet sources that you would be falling back to is to change your plan to the cheaper Roam 50 GB plan and use Starlink more as a backup and if your total usage is under 165 GB, it will be cheaper than the unlimited plan. You are giving up unlimited data, but you are still getting to take advantage of Starlink at a much more reasonable cost and maybe combine it with other sources.
Comparing the alternative, Iridium is still very bad with the Exec and is still expensive. I will pay the $250 for great, consistent networking no matter where I am, on my boat (currently using it in Tahiti).
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Which has nothing to do with it. They need permission to launch/maintain 7,000 satellites. They should only be allowed to do so if they serve a public good at a reasonable price.
The 50GB $50/month plan makes Starlink a great backup option to cellular and by applying a few techniques we cover for our members in the companion article, we have some helpful hints how to keep your Starlink cost lower if you don't mind making a few changes to make it work better for you and help extend that limited data.
I disagree that $1/GB is a good value for an amount of data that would last many people only a week or less of typical usage. Many cellular plans can match that price, but I do understand that Starlink might be available when cellular is not. $50/mo. for a "backup" is only viable for people with substantial incomes.
@@antibrevity My cell service is sketchy where i live but starlink works great. Most people stream mindless videos all day, i use the internet for work & research so 50-100Gb/mo is usually more than enough for me. No way I’m paying $165/mo for starlink.
@@antibrevity The initial cost to even get the hardware for Starlink is "only viable for people with substantial incomes". It's a luxury for the affluent, not comparable to cable internet in the city.
I have the old Residential with Portability plan. What will happen to me? Will I stay Residential or be kicked over to Roam. My email from starlink does not clarify this.
Question re proration related to changes of plan. It’s clear that if you switch from the 50$/50GB plan to the roam unlimited, you get charged the incremental $115. What happens if you initially opt in for additional GB at $1/GB. Say you get to 100 GB, so you’ve paid $100 total at that point. And then (in same billing period) decide to switch to the unlimited plan. Is it clear that you'd get charged only $65 to do so or would it still be $115? If you don’t know as of now, appreciate if you can clarify as/when you find out. Thanks
Likely any data over 50 GB that you paid at $1/GB wouldn't count towards the prorating when you switch mid billing cycle, so if you think you might need more data than a total of 165 GB which would be equal to the cost of the Roam Unlimited plan, it is probably best to just change directly to the Roam Unlimited plan once your 50GB is exhausted and just pay the difference. Keep in mind, the longer you make that original 50 GB last though, the cheaper the prorating is when you move to the Roam Unlimited plan since its based on the remaining days in your billing cycle, so your cost could be less than $165 total, yet still have unlimited data for part of the month.
Boaters took a big hit with these changes. One big one is that you can no longer just opt-in to Mobile Priority Data from the Roam Unlimited plan and instead must subscribe to a Mobile Priority Data plan for ocean coverage. The change in terminology around the "2 month trip" also makes us wonder if Starlink may start enforcing this restriction for global users. As a global user, you may need to start transferring your dish to accounts in new countries after you exhaust your 2 months, but we'll have to see how/if that is enforced.
So does this mean if I travel on my boat from the US into Canada that is considered “International “? If so, if I was seriously considering Starlink but no longer.
Yes - Canada and the US are now considered different countries. There has always been a 2 month limit in other countries even inside your own continent (just never enforced). So no change there, really.
Can anyone confirm that if the 50gb mini roam plan if left on with no devices connected it still uses significant data? I’m seeing quite a bit of data use without any devices connected
Indeed - it is only a minor hassle to update your address when you change locations. We traveled extensively with our Starlink using a Residential plan. It is a great way to save money.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter, for a residential unlimited plan: should I change the address before I travel to a certain location or can be done after arriving? Would SL allow to change the country, too? Is the residential plan restricted to the "2 months" stupid rule, like the roam plans? As a future full time vanlifer, I am trying to decide if it's wise to keep the 50gb roam plan with my Mini dish, or switch to unlimited residential.
@@silviuflorescu6838 If you know where you are going, then that allows your Starlink to immediate get service once you set it up, but you can also change the address once you get there, it just may take a little longer to get service. You cannot change the country on residential plans. You would have cancel and transfer the dish to a new account based out of that country. Technically the residential plan cannot be used out of your home country so the 2 month rule doesn't even apply. If you move your dish to an account in that country, then you are in your home country. You can change plans as you see fit depending on your usage. You are not stuck on one plan and you may find times it makes more sense to change. The Mini dish may not be able to be used on residential service though in the US.
Seems to me that you emphasized the negatives upfront pointing out the $165 plan while giving the $50/50G plan short shrift. Notice you are on a boat... most of us don't need 'island hopping.'
Indeed - a lot of cruisers never venture too far from shore. But check out today’s new story about the new limitations on Coastal Coverage which will potentially impact a lot of us.
The $50/50g plan is interesting. I wonder if it will still have a locked in monthly billing cycle? For example, say mines on the 21st and I turn it on on the 7th, do I only pay $25? Do I only get 25gb or do you have 2 weeks to use 50gb?
They don't prorate when you pause (as service continues through the end of your billing cycle), but they do prorate when you unpause in the middle of your billing period. So yes if your billing date on the 21st and you unpause on the 7th, you would pay a prorated amount for the remaining days and get all 50GB of data during that time.
@MobileInternetResourceCenter great so now you read my comment correctly. Now I'll ask again, I wonder if when I activate my service and I have 2 weeks left will they still give you 50gb or 25gb? I don't expect you to know the answer, I'm just wondering.
You will get the full 50GB of data even if you only activate with only 2 weeks left. Starlink has never shorted you on data when you upgrade plans or unpause.
I don’t think the changes are all that bad. You have to remember that we are always unhappy if something is taken away even if we didn’t use it. My only gripe is with priority data as always on and first use on the $250 plan. Considering it’s the most expensive plan, we should be able to turn it on or off. And as you said, for actuel cruisers making longer passages, this is a key feature. Question though: My boat is in Panama and obviously I don’t want to buy startlink here in NY and then ship it down there. Can I buy it in Panama and will my plans be US based, or Panama based? Is there a difference?
Yes, it has always been a bummer that Starlink does not allow you to toggle the priority data on/off so that you wouldn't use it first in the billing cycle. Starlink is available in Panama according to the Starlink.com/map. I'm not sure if their hardware or service prices are cheaper there, but likely it would be better to order locally from there. By staying local with your service, you can use the cheaper residential or roam plans and also not have to worry about running into the 2 month trip limitation that recently changed in the TOS/FAQ.
Did your email say your plan was changing? They have said for a while that if you ever switch away, you can’t get it back. Seems it was a limited time offer.
Since Starlink didn't mention any price changes in your email, are you currently paused on the $30 Mini bundled plan? Technically that $30 bundled mini roam plan was not supposed to be able to paused, but some people have been able to pause and this was likely a bug. Perhaps when you resume, you will only be able to at the $50/month price point. Please let us know so we can track this also.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter no it's not paused. I guess the email does not mention a price change, so maybe in just getting the new features (in motion) for same $30
Starling pricing is exhausting. It’s almost worth me canceling and switching to the fiber that just launched in my neighborhood even though it’s $100 for 50 down and 50 up taxes and fees included it’s probably way worth it.
Wow that's expensive still. We have 3 gigabit up and down Fibre at home and we pay $80cdn a month. We use starlink when we go camping way up north with no cell service once a year.
If you currently have your service paused, then your email did not include the price increase because you'll get the higher price when you unpause. Only those with active service received the price increase in the email to notify them it will take effect Oct 10th.
Did anyone think that the muskrat would give a great deal to anyone? A big part of the problem is the addiction to connectivity. He is cashing in on that big time. My advice is " make believe you're camping" !
It’s about supply and demand … as long as the demand remains, they will raise the price. They are going to test us and see when the demand drops (enough of us decide to stop the bleeding … another way of saying pricing us out) … competition would make them think differently.
Starkink is fucking with its base again and we are tired of it. Boat or RV - why penalize this demographic !? Being the only game in town for blue water cruising just turns people motivated to jump to the next vendor when it arrives. There no loyalty between Starlink and its users - Starlink doesn't give a shit.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Just being sarc, I knew that. I do like the on and off feature. So I only use it when I have to. TM home still works fine. Thanks
When we were first offered unlimited internet from space, starlink should have charged 200. A month. And we all would have paid for the ground breaking technology happily. Then starlink could have lowered the price 10.00 every year and we would be soooo happy. Things cost money 💰. It's not food or shelter and complaining doesn't do anything. If it's to high, cancel it.
Right now we're in the purgatory between T-mobile 5G Home Internet and Starlink while also rigorously testing reliability on FMCA's unlimited but throttled AT&T plan. We haven't been notified or booted yet from T-mobile but we did fire up Starlink and plan on mounting it to our rig soon (we'll still do that). With our data usage, not sure the 50gb option would be a value for us. Sigh - the inevitability of change.
If you end up with some unlimited cellular plans, than the 50 GB option could make Starlink a good backup and if you use less than 165 GB a month, it's still cheaper than the unlimited, but of course then you have to watch your usage more carefully.
I got the email and this is ridiculous. I do not have residential starlink (neighbor has). I have gen I guess its 2? Dish that has to be set up on a pole or ground mount etc etc. First it went to 135. Then 150. Now 165. I do not need in motion but even if I did... I am about to start paying for in motion starlink on a dish not capable of inmotion. In my opinion these people SHOULD ABSOLUTELY send me a dish free of charge that IS capable of "in motion". Otherwise I am literally paying for something I physically can't have on plan that was drastically different. Either give me a discount or give me a free dish or something. Grrr.
While in motion was one of the features added, the plan did add other features like having full global coverage and coastal waterway support up to 12 nautical miles. The price increase encompasses all these new features together. These new benefits may not be beneficial to you, but Starlink service has to make compromises on what they offer for each plan and they have in their TOS they will notify you at least 1 month in advance of upcoming changes that may negatively effect you and Oct 10th is a month away for the changes to take effect. While you are correct the Gen 2 was never approved for in motion, Starlink has added a "tilt flat" option to the app that would allow it to be used in such a manor or 3rd party mounts are available if you so desired. The Gen 2 hardware is also no longer current and all current hardware now officially supports in motion. You could always try reaching out to support on possibly offering a discounted price or even free upgrade on a Gen 3 hardware to take advantage of this new in motion features on your plan that your Gen 2 cannot take advantage of.

This is outrageous! Prices going up? I've never heard of such a thing! I will be canceling everything that has gone up in Price since 2010. So now I am going to live in a shack unit I starve to death 😮
Cue the whiners. "GREEDY CORPORATIONS! IM CANCELING" How can I continue to live an incredible nomad life without getting a real job? Buh bye. If enough of you cheapskates who dont appreciate the incredible service starlink provides, and you cancel, the price will go back down for me.
Some of us are "retired" and we've already had a "real job". Now we'd just like to be able to count on reasonable quality of service from those we do business with given that our earning days are pretty much over. Not whining. Not canceling service. Happy about being continually deprioritized because I'm driving around exploring and enjoying this big beautiful country? No. As someone else has already said, there seems no logical point in penalizing any specific demographic. As for you? Maybe loose the condescending attitude. Not a good look for you.

Affluent folks who don't have to work for a living complaining about a minor luxury cost increase is laughable. Loose the sanctimonious entitled attitude, not a good look for you. Greed is so ugly.
Is it realistic to get at least 10 upload consistently on the road with one of these? This is the only thing holding me back- or I could just airb&b a week a month to work.. just rather not Pls lmk thx❤
We have more reports of better upload speeds these days with Starlink - so it might be more possible. So much depends on how much congestion there is an area however.
I also have an onn pro streaming device. Where is the data saver location on that device? I found the data saver on my Nvidia shield, but not the onn.
Excellent information on the update. You rock!
Great update Chris!
I guess it all boils down to who and where you are, and how you use Starlink.

So looking forward to competition to Starlink launching into the market!
Amazon’s Kuiper is in the pipeline to start launching soon - but it has a LONG way to go to catch up.
😂
once that happens it will drive down the cost. I remember my first cell phone in the early 90's. $40.00 a month to have it and $1.50 a minute to use it.
Great review of the new changes. Thanks.
Set your devices to low data mode.
Wow, $165 per month, yes, We are cancelling On a Whim…
😂👋
Great update. I hadn’t seen the $50/50GB option for my Standard.
The option appeared just last night. 😎
Just checked emails & my Starlink account. I have Residential + Portability and there's no announcement of price or plan changes.
Glad I was an early adopter!😊
So far.. that plans seems untouched!
I'm glad to have full in motion access because I drive my motorhome in areas with poor or no cell data coverage
It's definitely a nice option to have to keep connected in areas that have challenging cellular connectivity.
Hi:) What are your speeds for this option? I need at least 10 up to make this life work for me
@@Somebodysomewheresometime Speeds range from 5 to 15 Mbps, depending on your cell signal strength. I’m currently using LTE, and I imagine 5G would be faster. I’m not sure what the cost of 5G is with Winegard, but they do offer a 5G router and antenna setup for RVs.
$50 per month is great -- just use it as failover on our pepwave when cellular drops out.
The $50/month 50GB plan is definitely a great way to keep your Starlink costs down, but still take advantage of it when you need it.
@@bretspencer yep that can be a great solution!
We agree.. the 50GB plan is a great option to have, and a great complement to those who utilize other sources of mobile internet - like cellular.
Anyone know if there is any impact on residential with roaming grandfathered?
We have not seen any price impacts or any other impacts to those grandfathered into portability and now there is a bigger price gap between these services, it makes it even more beneficial to hang on to that grandfathered plan.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter you bet. I have kept my service address to my location in the desert outside Quartzsite!
Thats what happened when I bought my system.. wasl 100.00 then bam... Went to 150.00.
You are literally wealthier than most humans and are whining about a $15/mo increase in cost for a luxury. Greed is so ugly.
*"Big Tex Pricing"* absolutely 😊

Effective immediately, you will have access to the following features with Starlink Roam:
In-Motion Use
International Travel
Coastal Coverage
An updated Terms of Service will go into effect starting 10/10/2024.
Thanks for sharing that email with us. The nice thing is they opened the Roam 50GB plan to any hardware now, not just the Mini.
What i would like to know is how far off the coast can you go before you get kicked off the network
According to their new FAQ & TOS, as soon as you leave areas marked land on this plan. We covered this here: ua-cam.com/video/T6xKSATrGGk/v-deo.html
Reference the Starlink Mini…I travel to the Philippines about 3 weeks a year, can I use the Starlink Mini while I am in the Philippines and how will I do it? Thanks…great channel!
If subscribed to a plan that allows international roaming and Starlink has licenses to serve that country, it should work.
Then stop roaming, easy as that, or stop crying about being wealthy. 🤣
I believe you are incorrect on the boating aspect. On the plan, it says Specifically, subscribers can receive Starlink access “up to 12 nautical miles off the coast and for a period of up to 2 months,”
Many cruisers go far further than 12 miles offshore.
@MobileInternetResourceCenter no kidding cruisers go out past 12 miles, I was referring to the video at about 4:20 wheen it's said only coastal waters not ocean travel.
Our interpretation is that those terms apply when outside your home country / just like international roaming.
it remains unclear the 12nm aspect… the wording in starlink FAQs can be interpreted two ways (or more)
in the context of australia coast.. there are islands that are territorial to australia, that are >12nm from coast…
so unclear how where the “12nm” test is applied.
certainly i didnt read it that this is only applicable to locations outside my home country?
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Most boaters do not. 🙄
I have two questions:
Can I use my standard antenna dish with the Mobile Priority plan?
You would need to switch to Mobile Priority data to get service in areas marked as water.
I wonder if you can switch roam to 50 gig and back to full easily?
Yes, you can switch between the two plans - there's even pro-rating when moving from 50GB to Unlimited.
I received the email, but my is missing the new plan pricing. Is it possible that some of us may get "grandfathered in?"
We have heard from many who currently have their plan paused got no pricing info in their notice. We are highly confident when unpaused, current / new pricing will apply.
I don’t need all those changes. Why charge me for it?
I'm cancelling Starlink today. This is ridiculous. Ole musk is becoming greedy, I'm not paying $165 per month.
That’s nice if you have other options.
This isn't an airport, you don't have to announce your departure.

Dose this mean the mini will work with the deprioritised residential plans now?
The Residential plan is higher priority than Roam.
Starlink operates essentially a public trust. I thought (and think) that US should have mandated prices he could charge.
Starlink is a privately owned company.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Which has nothing to do with it. They need permission to launch/maintain 7,000 satellites. They should only be allowed to do so if they serve a public good at a reasonable price.
I cancelled starlink because it’s too expensive but that 50Gb for $50 sounds like a good backup plan to my cellular data.

Just got starlink roam last month. Price went up from $170 to $189 CAD. Ouch
Certainly for people that just bought the service, this is a very un-welcome change immediately being hit with a price increase for the service.
I have the old Residential with Portability plan. What will happen to me? Will I stay Residential or be kicked over to Roam.
My email from starlink does not clarify this.
We have not heard of any changes coming to that grandfathered in plan at this time.
What about boaters? I'm worldwide cruiser sailor?
😂
Can anyone confirm that if the 50gb mini roam plan if left on with no devices connected it still uses significant data? I’m seeing quite a bit of data use without any devices connected
It shouldn't be using any data if you have nothing connected to it.
Residential is making more and more sense for folks who don't need in-motion.
Pretty sure this option will be short lived
@@PhilEhI It will remain for those who desire it, justifiably at a cost.
The cost of our addictions of livelihood are forever in change and increase. 😊
Stopped using Starlink the last time they increased prices, so this changes nothing. I'll reconsider satellite internet when there's competition.
Nothing different than even the cable companies. They raise prices all the time too.
I mean there is satellite internet competition. They just all suck rn.

The $50/50g plan is interesting. I wonder if it will still have a locked in monthly billing cycle? For example, say mines on the 21st and I turn it on on the 7th, do I only pay $25? Do I only get 25gb or do you have 2 weeks to use 50gb?
All Starlink billing is by the month - they do not pro-rate when you pause.
@MobileInternetResourceCenter yes they do!! I'm on roam and I just unpaused my service and paid $59 till my next billing date!
Question though:
My boat is in Panama and obviously I don’t want to buy startlink here in NY and then ship it down there.
Yep. Their continuing bait-and-switch BS means no money from me. Glad I got my deposit back before they figured out a scheme to keep that.
I got the email, it seems the 30$ add on mini plan is going away, because that's what I have now
Did your email say your plan was changing? They have said for a while that if you ever switch away, you can’t get it back. Seems it was a limited time offer.

Ahh the troubles of the affluent. 😂

You could always try reaching out to support on possibly offering a discounted price or even free upgrade on a Gen 3 hardware to take advantage of this new in motion features on your plan that your Gen 2 cannot take advantage of.
one day(not TODAY OR TOMORROW) id like to see ONE PLAN!!! that plan is ON or OFF!!! unlimited data everything anywhere DONE!!! tired of screwing around with WHERE AM I GOING TO BE NEXT MONTH? HOW LONG WILL I BE IN THIS LOCATION THIS MONTH? screw service plans, either its on unlimited anywhere or I DONT NEED IT!!! im also sick of the creative ways they come up with to bilk every dime outa you
As long as StarLink not offering contracts thus guaranty and keeps changing the conditions it is not for me. Elon is as a drunken cat going in all directions. I don't care if the price is 50 or 200 as long as it is guarantied.
This is outrageous! Prices going up? I've never heard of such a thing! I will be canceling everything that has gone up in Price since 2010. So now I am going to live in a shack unit I starve to death 😮
If you can afford to not permanently live in one place and the Starlink equipment, you can afford to pay this increased price. Greed is so ugly.
@@joyenroute If you're retired and don't have an income to increase, then stop complaining, you're literally living better than 99% of humanity. Nobody will pity the affluent when they complain about a minor price increase for their luxuries. Yes, your roaming luxurious unemployed nomadic lifestyle should absolutely should be less of a service priority than residential customers (who are the bulk of the customer base). Affluent folks who don't have to work for a living complaining about a minor luxury cost increase is laughable. Loose the sanctimonious entitled attitude, not a good look for you. Greed is so ugly.
Is it realistic to get at least 10 upload consistently on the road with one of these? This is the only thing holding me back- or I could just airb&b a week a month to work.. just rather not
Pls lmk thx❤
We have more reports of better upload speeds these days with Starlink - so it might be more possible. So much depends on how much congestion there is an area however.
