@Gee Willikers Please explain to me what you thought was sad and demeaning about this interview so I can understand, I thought it was a very good interview,,,I know it's hard to look at the past it makes white people feel guilt and it makes some African Americans feel shame, pain, anger, and hopelessness, but if we don't look at the past, how can we fix the future, I was born and raised in the south and a large majority of whites here don't want to look at the past treatment of African Americans, they're like, that was then, this is now, let's move on, but no we can't do that, racism in America is still all over America every day, felt by millions of black people, brown people, Asians, Native Americans, we have to look at our very racist and violent past before we can make America better.

Some of the elements that made this talk (it didn’t feel like an interview to me) was that it was free of ad breaks so it was allowed to flow and develop; the wonderful piece from their trip to Africa; Conan and Sam’s facial expressions and reactions revealed their obvious respect and appreciation for each other - all made this a master class on the beauty of the “uncomfortable conversation.” So glad that I stumbled across it. Will now look for the one with Kamu Bell. Bravo Sam and Conan...this convo should serve to carry most listening or thoughtful pessimists over to 51%!

Man, Conan has been on-board for unity of humankind since forever. You guys remember when he started traveling the world specials when Trump was at his peak (I think it was 2016)--it feels so long ago, I don't remember every single episode, but I remember the bits in Australia, but specially how touching the trip with his assistant to Armenia, the history of genocide there--Conan is 100 on trying. He really is trying; I can never, nor can anyone, ever take that away from him.
I have learned so much from this week of interviews on Conan, I'm embarrassed to admit my level of ignorance and head in the sand before. I loved this interview so much. The way Sam spoke from his heart, unrehearsed, made this so much more impactful. The police encounter stories really got to me. I hope there is at least a smidge of hope we can turn this around.
Beautiful! The clip of those Americans in the year of return in Ghana was so sobering. Being cut off from your ancestors for 400 years and becoming an oppressed minority through no fault of your own is a uniquely difficult thing. When at the end Conan was describing Sam's grandmother's house in Ghana with all the portraits of their ancestors, I couldn't help but think that's what those Americans were missing for generations upon generations. It's like a whole sector of the US population are orphaned, and that's all they knew for so long. The movie 'Daughters of the Dust' is amazing in how it portrays this particular struggle of identity.
It’s sad. It’s also sad for all the white slaves which were sold by the African slave traders too. Yet, we focus only on black slavery because, our school systems history is flawed. The first slaves in America weren’t just black. There were way more white slaves on those boats. Not indentured servants but actual white slaves. Learn the truth.

I feel like social media in 2020 is designed to shame people if they try to have a conversation and are wrong about something. People aren't just corrected, they're "canceled" and berated by others. It's really sad. Dialogue is the only way we learn from each other.

What you want is an audience that doesn't participate in your monologue, but only observes and applauds your solo act, even when you're wrong. However, conversations aren't solo acts; they require all people to be proactive. All people are allowed to participate in social media conversations. That's why it has become the phenomenon that it is. If we want people to be quiet about their real-life and everyday shame, "cancellation", and berating they suffer just to continue breathing on this planet, then we have to be quiet about the few words we chose to read on the internet. It's really sad that you have constructed your "victimization" so that no one is allowed to speak the truth to you. What are we going to learn if the other person doesn't speak the truth? Nothing. In a conversation, we have to listen to the other person and respond truthfully. Is it going to be easy? Ask the protesters. A dialogue is not a monologue. We should consider ourselves fortunate to be a part of this groundbreaking and historic moment that has taken the decimation of countless lives, entire cultures, and 400 years to happen. Don't let our fragility be the reason we don't allow this conversation to happen.
Here in Germany it feels like, the USA created an image about themselves which is far away from the reality. Freedom, equality, curiosity and many more values seem so far. It doesn't affect me directly, only in the way that the american influence, politically and medially, on the world is big. The good thing about this influence is, that also here a dialogue starts, because in here racism is not careful anymore about speaking out loud, it´s still also here. Many white americans immigrated to the USA, because our german ancestors lived the absolute racism, their descendant should know dark details about racism and the impact. From the deepest of my heart I hope we all together can prepare a great place for our future generations!
Germany has done a better job in facing the horrors of its past than we have in the U.S. And I say that as a Jewish person. But the conversations we are having now may help bring us to a better place. I certainly hope so. Conan has done a wonderful job during the pandemic.

@@zbagz01 I am glad to hear that you don't face racial profiling in Germany, but I can say from personal experience as a half Asian person that I have been called out countless times while living in Europe "ni hao" or "konichiwa", or the famous question "Where are you *really* from?" when my answer of being born in a Western country doesn't satisfy their appetite. From the outside, it may seem like Europe is doing better with racism, but like Tim Rosenthal said, the only difference is that it is an active conversation in the US, and in Europe more often brushed off.

agree, Germany acknowledged the genocide and learnt from the past, while I don't think Eastern Europe reflected on their antisemitic past. But the thing with America is that it's a place of extremes. The atrocious hundred of years of slavery followed by segregation to black people, and on the other hand, is the place where all the modern civil rights movements originated and/or developed. In the rest of the world discrimination is not discussed, you will only hear the experience first hand from the victims while the rest say "Racism? there's no racism here".

I love that what Sam is suggesting we do, as we move forward in this work we have before us, is to actually develop some emotional intelligence as human beings. Time to have a good, long look at yourself and ask yourself why you do and say things that perpetuate the stigma and bias against POC, whether intentional or not.
It is interesting that Sam had trouble in Dearborn, Michign. Back in the day, Henry Ford owned all the land that became the city of Dearborn. Ford lived in Dearborn and did not want blacks to live there, so he created the city of Inkster (adjacent to Dearborn) for blacks to live in. For the next 40+ years blacks were effectively prevented from living in Dearborn. The city of Detroit was mostly white with small pockets of black neighborhoods. After WWII, as the city spread out into the suburbs (across 8 Mile Road!), the banks (with the help of the federal government), only loaned money to white families to move to the new houses in Redford and Warren and fashionable Ferndale. They would only approve loans for blacks to live in Detroit, not in the suburbs. This became the beginning of the White Exodus out of the wonderful, flourishing city that Detroit was. Today there are black ghettos in every major city of the US, and they were created by the public policies of the US government who backed the banks, the auto companies, the home construction companies, and the white people in all the positions of power.
I feel like there has to have been a book written about this. Is there one you could recommend? I'd always assumed this was true, but haven't really seen it documented much in journalism, etc.
Coming from the area its really sad to still see the division in living conditions in just a short drive down woodward. There has to be changes made. The old normal was never supposed to be the normal for everyone. Its time we change that
Wow. Thank you for educating us for free. Sincerely. We never knew that racism in our city planning was such an organized conspiracy. The amount of time and energy those men had to spend getting together in the same room to think, talk, and write about how to remove specifically Black people from their sight is astounding. This is why the people in those videos know they can call the police and say whatever lie they want just to remove Black people from their sight. And this is why the officers know they can do whatever they want to do to Black people. Those officers are doing what those men told them to do, which is to remove Black people from their sight. Sometimes those men tell the officers to bring Black people back to their sight. Then, the officers chase and capture the Black, runaway slaves, and bring them back to the plantation or back to their eponymous, comedy, TV show to continue making millions of dollars for those men. Those men and their officers, their extensions or predecessors have been doing this for 400 years.
Ford was an all-around piece of trash. Racist and antisemitic both. He published a paper for years called The Dearborn Independent that was filled with racist and antisemitic garbage. Almost all the records of the Independent were, if I remember correctly, destroyed, so it is very hard to do any research on the inner workings of the paper because all the minutes, memos, correspondence are gone. The very little there is shows that those who were running it were deeply hateful and suspicious of anyone who wasn't white. If you do some looking you'll find the research there is on the paper, if you're interested.

All you have to do is be calm and explain why you have your pigment that way, what type of food your family eats, who you pray to, etc. Sometimes people are aggressive and rude, but notice that they are ignorant and have been brought up that way. Pitty them. Furthermore, there are no ethno-states in the world except for North Korea, I think. So Britain is not the property of White people, as much as that might be your fantasy or worldly views, it's not the legal views of the UK. British Values includes racial equality. No White hegemony. No "safe spaces" for White people to avoid "no go" areas of people that look like me.
There are literally no pieces of data that support BLMs stances. 15 unarmed black men and 25 unarmed white men were killed by police last year. 340 white men and 220 black men total. When you account for high crime rates in the African American community, there is no racial bias in police killings, but the media doesn’t want you to think that. The ironic thing is that Biden and the Democrats want to keep the black man down. There are a tonnnnnnn of studies that show that being raised in single parent households vastly increases the chance of generational poverty. Since the 1960s, when the African American community devoted itself to the Democratic Party and the welfare state, the percentage of African American families that were intact went from 80% to 20%. The Republicans freed the slaves, the Democrats used the black man for political gain and have kept them down for 70 years. Nothing will get better for the African American until they realize they’re being used as a politics tool.

I don't commend Conan for doing something every single person should be doing, I expect this of him, especially knowing his character. Everyone else should be doing the same with their platforms and I am glad that this reach is used so people, including myself, can continue to listen to the opinions, experiences, and advice of all black people who are DIRECTLY affected and whom should be the regarded with the highest respect and provided support by all of us.

Sam Richardson telling his own personal stories of run-in's with racists & racist cops is harrowing and simply demonstrates how pervasive racism is in America. This man is lucky to still be alive.
I was fortunate enough to work and interact with Sam just before the lock down. ( werewolves within) be on the look out. It’s in post production now. Who knows how long this covid is going to push the movie back. He’s honestly a great guy! He was the lead of the movie and me just a set dresser. He treated me just the same as he would anyone else on the crew. I also have some great footage from the wrap party of him doing karaoke at the wrap party. It’s amazing!

I really really want to sit here for an hour and respond to each deeply ignorant person who has negatively commented on this wonderful conversation between two friends. But then I remind myself that it would not be a productive exercise, and that half of them are probably Russian bots, anyway. So instead, I'll say that I've gotten angry with cops, and never seen a hand on a weapon or heard a raised tone. I went to a fancy store with a friend of color and I set down my backpack. I got distracted and I left it there, so I asked if we could go back. Both times we were in the store we were followed. And when I say "we", I mean "he", because I was painfully aware that I was not the one being watched. The assumption was that he was there to steal something. Conan, I hope you wear every dislike, every negative comment as a badge of honor. It means you're making the right people uncomfortable. Good. Let them stay that way.

A friend and I were talking about this just yesterday. Some Black people need to use missteps as an opportunity to teach rather than crush or discount others. Yes there are fakes and opportunists out there. But sometimes give folks the benefit of the doubt and a chance to get it right. Their actions over time will show who they really are.

I'm a prof teaching about music, health and wellness, and my course with 80 students at a University in Canada is incredibly diverse. We have 60 healthcare students, and 20 music students, and they're wondering how music works to heal. Well, this week was about listening and really hearing -- hearing for social healing. I loved this interview so much. The way Sam spoke from his heart, unrehearsed, made this so much more impactful. The police encounter stories really got to me. I hope there is at least a smidge of hope we can turn this around.
Beautiful! The clip of those Americans in the year of return in Ghana was so sobering. Being cut off from your ancestors for 400 years and becoming an oppressed minority through no fault of your own is a uniquely difficult thing. When at the end Conan was describing Sam's grandmother's house in Ghana with all the portraits of their ancestors, I couldn't help but think that's what those Americans were missing for generations upon generations. It's like a whole sector of the US population are orphaned, and that's all they knew for so long. The movie 'Daughters of the Dust' is amazing in how it portrays this particular struggle of identity.

It’s sad. It’s also sad for all the white slaves which were sold by the African slave traders too. Yet, we focus only on black slavery because, our school systems history is flawed. The first slaves in America weren’t just black. There were way more white slaves on those boats. Not indentured servants but actual white slaves. Learn the truth.

I feel like social media in 2020 is designed to shame people if they try to have a conversation and are wrong about something. People aren't just corrected, they're "canceled" and berated by others. It's really sad. Dialogue is the only way we learn from each other.

What you want is an audience that doesn't participate in your monologue, but only observes and applauds your solo act, even when you're wrong. However, conversations aren't solo acts; they require all people to be proactive. All people are allowed to participate in social media conversations. That's why it has become the phenomenon that it is. If we want people to be quiet about their real-life and everyday shame, "cancellation", and berating they suffer just to continue breathing on this planet, then we have to be quiet about the few words we chose to read on the internet. It's really sad that you have constructed your "victimization" so that no one is allowed to speak the truth to you.
What are we going to learn if the other person doesn't speak the truth? Nothing. In a conversation, we have to listen to the other person and respond truthfully. Is it going to be easy? Ask the protesters. A dialogue is not a monologue.
We should consider ourselves fortunate to be a part of this groundbreaking and historic moment that has taken the decimation of countless lives, entire cultures, and 400 years to happen. Don't let our fragility be the reason we don't allow this conversation to happen.
Here in Germany it feels like, the USA created an image about themselves which is far away from the reality. Freedom, equality, curiosity and many more values seem so far. It doesn't affect me directly, only in the way that the american influence, politically and medially, on the world is big. The good thing about this influence is, that also here a dialogue starts, because in here racism is not careful anymore about speaking out loud, it´s still also here. Many white americans immigrated to the USA, because our german ancestors lived the absolute racism, their descendant should know dark details about racism and the impact. From the deepest of my heart I hope we all together can prepare a great place for our future generations!
Germany has done a better job in facing the horrors of its past than we have in the U.S. And I say that as a Jewish person. But the conversations we are having now may help bring us to a better place. I certainly hope so.

@@zbagz01 I am glad to hear that you don't face racial profiling in Germany, but I can say from personal experience as a half Asian person that I have been called out countless times while living in Europe "ni hao" or "konichiwa", or the famous question "Where are you *really* from?" when my answer of being born in a Western country doesn't satisfy their appetite. From the outside, it may seem like Europe is doing better with racism, but like Tim Rosenthal said, the only difference is that it is an active conversation in the US, and in Europe more often brushed off.

agree, Germany acknowledged the genocide and learnt from the past, while I don't think Eastern Europe reflected on their antisemitic past. But the thing with America is that it's a place of extremes. The atrocious hundred of years of slavery followed by segregation to black people, and on the other hand, is the place where all the modern civil rights movements originated and/or developed. In the rest of the world discrimination is not discussed, you will only hear the experience first hand from the victims while the rest say "Racism? there's no racism here".

I love that what Sam is suggesting we do, as we move forward in this work we have before us, is to actually develop some emotional intelligence as human beings. Time to have a good, long look at yourself and ask yourself why you do and say things that perpetuate the stigma and bias against POC, whether intentional or not.

It is interesting that Sam had trouble in Dearborn, Michign. Back in the day, Henry Ford owned all the land that became the city of Dearborn. Ford lived in Dearborn and did not want blacks to live there, so he created the city of Inkster (adjacent to Dearborn) for blacks to live in. For the next 40+ years blacks were effectively prevented from living in Dearborn. The city of Detroit was mostly white with small pockets of black neighborhoods. After WWII, as the city spread out into the suburbs (across 8 Mile Road!), the banks (with the help of the federal government), only loaned money to white families to move to the new houses in Redford and Warren and fashionable Ferndale. They would only approve loans for blacks to live in Detroit, not in the suburbs. This became the beginning of the White Exodus out of the wonderful, flourishing city that Detroit was. Today there are black ghettos in every major city of the US, and they were created by the public policies of the US government who backed the banks, the auto companies, the home construction companies, and the white people in all the positions of power.
I feel like there has to have been a book written about this. Is there one you could recommend? I'd always assumed this was true, but haven't really seen it documented much in journalism, etc.
Coming from the area its really sad to still see the division in living conditions in just a short drive down woodward. There has to be changes made. The old normal was never supposed to be the normal for everyone. Its time we change that

Wow. Thank you for educating us for free. Sincerely. We never knew that racism in our city planning was such an organized conspiracy. The amount of time and energy those men had to spend getting together in the same room to think, talk, and write about how to remove specifically Black people from their sight is astounding. This is why the people in those videos know they can call the police and say whatever lie they want just to remove Black people from their sight. And this is why the officers know they can do whatever they want to do to Black people. Those officers are doing what those men told them to do, which is to remove Black people from their sight. Sometimes those men tell the officers to bring Black people back to their sight. Then, the officers chase and capture the Black, runaway slaves, and bring them back to the plantation or back to their eponymous, comedy, TV show to continue making millions of dollars for those men. Those men and their officers, their extensions or predecessors have been doing this for 400 years.
Ford was an all-around piece of trash. Racist and antisemitic both. He published a paper for years called The Dearborn Independent that was filled with racist and antisemitic garbage. Almost all the records of the Independent were, if I remember correctly, destroyed, so it is very hard to do any research on the inner workings of the paper because all the minutes, memos, correspondence are gone. The very little there is shows that those who were running it were deeply hateful and suspicious of anyone who wasn't white. If you do some looking you'll find the research there is on the paper, if you're interested.

All you have to do is be calm and explain why you have your pigment that way, what type of food your family eats, who you pray to, etc. Sometimes people are aggressive and rude, but notice that they are ignorant and have been brought up that way. Pitty them. Furthermore, there are no ethno-states in the world except for North Korea, I think. So Britain is not the property of White people, as much as that might be your fantasy or worldly views, it's not the legal views of the UK. British Values includes racial equality. No White hegemony. No "safe spaces" for White people to avoid "no go" areas of people that look like me.
There are literally no pieces of data that support BLMs stances. 15 unarmed black men and 25 unarmed white men were killed by police last year. 340 white men and 220 black men total. When you account for high crime rates in the African American community, there is no racial bias in police killings, but the media doesn’t want you to think that. The ironic thing is that Biden and the Democrats want to keep the black man down. There are a tonnnnnnn of studies that show that being raised in single parent households vastly increases the chance of generational poverty. Since the 1960s, when the African American community devoted itself to the Democratic Party and the welfare state, the percentage of African American families that were intact went from 80% to 20%. The Republicans freed the slaves, the Democrats used the black man for political gain and have kept them down for 70 years. Nothing will get better for the African American until they realize they’re being used as a politics tool.

I don't commend Conan for doing something every single person should be doing, I expect this of him, especially knowing his character. Everyone else should be doing the same with their platforms and I am glad that this reach is used so people, including myself, can continue to listen to the opinions, experiences, and advice of all black people who are DIRECTLY affected and whom should be the regarded with the highest respect and provided support by all of us.

This was a beautiful realization that was made. The seemingly most carefree Black person you know is very likely living with an ANGER that you could never deal with and still function.

Sam Richardson telling his own personal stories of run-in's with racists & racist cops is harrowing and simply demonstrates how pervasive racism is in America. This man is lucky to still be alive.
Give space for more of these authentic conversations. Action is needed. I pray the time is here now. Thank you for letting others speak.
I was fortunate enough to work and interact with Sam just before the lock down. ( werewolves within) be on the look out. It’s in post production now. Who knows how long this covid is going to push the movie back. He’s honestly a great guy! He was the lead of the movie and me just a set dresser. He treated me just the same as he would anyone else on the crew. I also have some great footage from the wrap party of him doing karaoke at the wrap party. It’s amazing!
Conan has done so much good work for philanthropy and equality, but he's massively underappreciated for this! Someone give him a Nobel peace prize already.
I really really want to sit here for an hour and respond to each deeply ignorant person who has negatively commented on this wonderful conversation between two friends. But then I remind myself that it would not be a productive exercise, and that half of them are probably Russian bots, anyway. So instead, I'll say that I've gotten angry with cops, and never seen a hand on a weapon or heard a raised tone. I went to a fancy store with a friend of color and I set down my backpack. I got distracted and I left it there, so I asked if we could go back. Both times we were in the store we were followed. And when I say "we", I mean "he", because I was painfully aware that I was not the one being watched. The assumption was that he was there to steal something. Conan, I hope you wear every dislike, every negative comment as a badge of honor. It means you're making the right people uncomfortable. Good. Let them stay that way.

A friend and I were talking about this just yesterday. Some Black people need to use missteps as an opportunity to teach rather than crush or discount others. Yes there are fakes and opportunists out there. But sometimes give folks the benefit of the doubt and a chance to get it right. Their actions over time will show who they really are.

Your strength and humor and perspective and saying all black people have to be scholars. I found it moving to hear you. I'm a prof teaching about music, health and wellness, and my course with 80 students at a University in Canada is incredibly diverse. We have 60 healthcare students, and 20 music students, and they're wondering how music works to heal. Well, this week was about listening and really hearing -- hearing for social healing.
