Start with this tutorial and draw out the torso. Once that's done, measure it out from crotch to shoulder- that distance should be close to how long you want to make the top bit of the leg from crotch to knee and also knee to ankle.

Late answer. But perhaps ry measuring out photos of people (preferably in not too much cloths) by drawing/tracing over them. Not as art, but to find out how long the thighs are in co parison to the torso, how big the knee is in proportion to a average normal leg, where the muscles go....screenshots from bodybuilding videos are great to find out more about how muscles and bones work...you can still put some fat over it after learning the structure, when you want softer shapes. 😊

After studying a lot of different methods of drawing the pelvis, along with my anatomy book and references, I have determined that your hoop method is actually the best shorthand for drawing the pelvis. A lot of people say to draw a box or vase, but those don't give you all of the important landmarks. Your method has the ASIS, and the pubic bone, the greater trocanter, and also can help place the sacrum based on the placement of the ASIS. It also shows a lot of different muscle connection points. It shows you where to put the navel (between the ASIS), and once you place the middle abdominal muscle above the navel, you have the distance between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the spine.

I was wondering if you'd consider doing a Dynamic Poses tutorial? Something with variation in it, like a character leaping in the air, one with a bow, and general action poses. It's an area I could use my Mikey goodness on!... That sounded less weird in my head...

Great examples and from different viewpoints. I never really learned how to use a box for the hips and chest with its ways to mapping things out , relation how those features can change from the box, and certain landmarks to help draw these body parts. I mainly learned to use all the basic shapes like you are doing here. So, it is always great to actually see someone doing a tutorial and doing the basic shapes to how to map off of them.
Too many tutorials have the finished drawing already on the table, with tracing paper over it. Then they pretend they are free hand drawing that body or face from there. Those are such lies. They don't show how to map anything out, but trace out the finish product. Teaching with the basic shapes, vs. Not teaching anything because, they are tracing the picture underneath.
