Badass. I did a big trip summer / fall of 2021. Weekly 12 mile training hikes. I found hiking the route to high dune to be the toughest route on my trip. Worse than the 14 mile Grand Canyon hike I did. It was late summer and the dunes were completely dry and hard as hell to climb.
My girlfriend and I went hiking into some high dunes in California and at the top of the ridge of the largest dune the sand was in a perfect U-shape. So we thought that would be the perfect place to spend the night. In the middle of the night the wind started to blow hard. Then we discovered why the top of the dune was U-shaped! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think the sand is prettier at white sands but the dunes here are super huge which is cool. Should have got a sled to slide down that big one lol. Fyi idk if you're still in pueblo or up in the Denver area but you'll have way better luck dashing in denver, I recommend Arvada zone (anywhere west of i25 is good though, just stay away from Colfax at night) and the wooly mammoth lots are a nice safe place to sleep.
We went off trail at White Sands and I came across an unexploded missile and we also saw a Onyx. We found large foot prints of a two toed ungulate. I think that's what it's called. So we followed the foot prints for miles and miles and came over a dune and there he was! I had no idea those things were out there and all the sudden I thought we were in Africa! I took down the coordinates of the missile and reported it. They were very thankful and didn't give me any hassle about hiking off trail which I was not supposed to be doing. Such a beautiful trip. It was full moon at night and that place was absolutely magical!
Wowie zowie, a sand hike is work. I got winded just watching. Thanks for taking us to the Parks!

No kidding! Hiking big sand dunes is TOUGH!

Oh no! What a lesson to learn the hard way 😅
You said it perfectly, you are a badass!
With that much sand seeping into your shoes perhaps you should have eschewed the Gators for Crocs? 😜😊
i LOL'd when you emptied your shoes. :)

I'm headed towards Denver. Thanks, Eric!

It's fascinating how sand just randomly exists in that one spot in the middle of the mountain range.
I guess millions of years ago there was basically a sea of water where the Rockies are now. That's probably what brought the sand, I would imagine.
