  • What if you were told that you could do whatever you wanted with your life? As simple as this may sound, we are often caught up in getting a good job, making a lot of money, and ultimately falling under societal expectations of “success.” But what if Chattanooga were a place with no expectations and no limits? Rachel Raisin expands on this idea by telling us her tale of making a thousand origami paper cranes. She encourages us in Chattanooga to align ourselves despite our differences and recognize that we don’t always have to do what society demands.
Rachel Raisin, a senior at Girls Preparatory School, dedicates her life to helping others. As President of the Community Service Leadership Council at GPS, she can often be found out in the Chattanooga community. Along with her efforts to better the community, she is also an avid visual artist. She is currently working on her portfolio for AP Drawing, with a concentration named “Crushed, Crinkled, and Cracked.” Her work was recently selected to be shown in the Palate to Palette art show. In May 2015, Raisin attended ALA Volunteer Girls State in Nashville. This intensive weeklong program promotes good citizenship.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Wait, so she didn't start making them based off of the story of 'Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes'?

I make paper cranes often because I love making them. I started folding them when I was 11 and gave them to classmates, strangers, waitresses etc. People would often tell me to make something other than cranes. I've made other origami but I always find myself making these paper cranes. My daughter has a disability so I am going to make her a 1000 crane mobile. She is only 4 months old but I am very determined to do this and wish for good eyesight for her.

I started to make 1000 paper cranes yesterday. I have 22 days to get it done because I want to give it to my friend on his birthday. It's my second day and I already have 105 cranes

America Hernandez yeah! My boyfriend wouldn’t even make five cranes for me and we’ve been dating for 7 months xD. I might be exaggerating but I would die for someone who made 1000 cranes for me

There was this kid in my study hall who was quite annoying and loud. One day i made a paper crane in class before study hall and put the finished crane on a countertop in the hallway i glance at it before i lose sight of it to see if anyone would take it and no one did. I was like “ehh doesnt matter” then the annoying kid shows up with a crane in his hand that was mine. I was thinking of saying “hey i made that” but i kept to myself and smiled

Tbh it is easy. I had this system where I'd take a piece of paper and make 9 cranes with 1 piece of paper. While I made them, I'd watch My name is Earl or That 70's show. I did this for 2 months in my spare time. I watched those 2 shows about 8 times each.

She completely disregards the true meaning of making 1000 cranes. It is not to represent how one wants to transcend society and bring it down by being different. 1000 cranes are suppose to bring a society together with feelings of hope and peace. Her representation of the task is false and lazy.
