ExCIter, thats how you said (the Second way you said, comes from Excite). Shine is a great song. Such a chill album, very spiritual, makes me feel like i am floating in water. The delicate and intimate side of Depeche. Shine is awesome, it shows dynamic Dave's voice is, with this very different voice. Love it
Very unpredictable - you exactly got it, Seph ❤ Reason why we all love Depeche Mode. They have no fear to explore something new. At the beginning of the century it was cool to make dance, ambient and listen to Björk so the called up Mark Bell to make Exciter. Keep on 👍
This album told me DM had graduated. Ultra was cool. They were blazing a new, post Alan trail. But Exciter was arrival. They re-announced their rebirth with this one. New Wave meets industrial meets I dont know what... DM I guess ❤ (Very reminiscent of Bowie... giving back to the sound they helped create.)
I've actually listened to Exciter more in the past few months than for years and I think it has a timeless quality. You are right about the minimalist techno inspiration Martin had at the time. This album has aged well. No classics other than Freelove, but a great listen as a whole. More people should revisit Exciter! Keep it up Seph, glad you haven't jumped on the no Alan, no good bandwagon. I actually only really listen to DM post-SOFAD these days, because I'm older and I don't live in the 80s any more!
I don’t know if someone already said it but the “ooh ooh” was sung with Martin in the background. I’d almost forget about this song! Glad to hear it again with Dave’s smooth vocals like butter. I heard the beginning of the next song which is one of my favorites on the album. From album to album, DM sounds like different bands.
Again, rewatching your DM stuff... One thing that I remember standing out about the lyrics of this song when it came out was the part where Dave sings, "You've been hanging from a rope of mediocrity Strung up by your insecurities You can shine for me Somebody has to Shine for me It's difficult not to Shine for me..." At the time, to me, the lyrics were talking about how the entire music industry had become mondane and mediocre. How someone needed to shine for us, and how it's difficult for Marty and Dave not to shine for us... I dunno. lol That's how i heard it the first time. 🤷♂️
OH MAN.. I LOVE this one. It's sexy as f..... - I loved going to Pyramid Club in NYC (down the street from where I live) on 80s nights with goth in the basement. Man, they play this and you just get out on the dance floor - no one cares how you dance at Pyramid - you can just close your eyes move, no judgements. I'm also pretty sure this would've been in heavy rotation for my sets when I did go-go at clubs. Sadly, Pyramid wound up closing after being an institution for 40 years - due to being forced to close during pandemic. Wonderful memories. Thank you so much for exploring this record.
You will hear lots of these modern electronic sounds in the future. Exciter was actually the first album where they introduced them and they kept them till today thoughout every album.
Yes Steph...alot of trip hop/loungy stuff came out around this time...the start of a very musically diverse era.....getting out of the typical musical purism....possibly an influence. I love this album, especially brings out Daves vocals for me. ❤🖤 hence the way some of the songs were remixed at the time. I.e this and Useless remix on a lounge remix album. Also love alot of 'Dance Mode' remixes i.e 'i feel loved' (Danny Tenaglua/Ivan Spell mix.... were fabulous! 🤩 I think if you are a musical purist you would be one of the fans to be less likely to like this album (as it was a definate change in style for them!). I loved it....due to musical diversity, the way their music is so remixable, instrumentally and vocally... it was also one of the best times in my life; so love the positive associations.❤ Cant wait to see then again! Hopefully not the last time!!! Forever Mode!!!!🎉💯🖤
It's EX-SIGHT-HER... Daves' vocals are some of his most beautiful on this album, as you'll find out. April 2001 was the release date so I can see the low-key techno influence in her as well Seph. Martin is singing in harmony with Dave on the "Oooo oooo" part...Good Observation! So Glad you're enjoying thus far Seph! Stylistically, it is a very different album from ULTRA.... More Delightful musical gems Ahead! Cheers Mate!!!!
Yeah! Seth is back on track! It's interesting how DM, in their own way, followed Bowie. Now hear me out lol Composition of Sound (Vince, Marty and Andy) discovered Dave in a neighboring studio singing David Bowie's Heroes. In fact, I believe it was Vince specifically who discovered him. (FYI, Dave is the one who suggested they change their name from Composition of Sound to Depeche Mode. He had read it in a French magazine. 😂 Anyway, DM ironically seems to have emulated Bowie in that they changed faces many times, perhaps never invented a new sound, but always managed to pull off the, "Hold my beer. Let me show you my take on this scene." Art following art. There is so much amazing DM awaiting you. ❤
A French fashion magazine at the time was called dépêche mode. Dave was studying at an art college at the time and suggested the name for their future band.
Shine gefällt mir. Dave sagte einmal in einem Interview, dass er diesen Song für seine damals zweijährige Tochter (als Schlaflied) gesungen hat. Diese sehr sanfte Stimme gibt's tatsächlich nur auf diesem Album.
This lusty, sensual, slow burner is the natural succession to "World In My Eyes". In this one the subject is enticing their lover to come out of their shell. To let go sexually. To experience an intimate connection on a higher plane. The intensity of choruses here mirror the orgasmic sound and frenzy of the choruses in "World In My Eyes". (3:30) "Sometimes it's hard to shine out when there's so many more people out there who shine a bit more brighter than what you do." Was this a confession?
hey Seph❤ how are you doing? i m happy to see you enjoy Depeche Mode. my kind of music in the 80 s alongside the Cure while the airwaves were full of massproduced boring synthi pop tunes😂 if you want to hear a truly amazing voice and absolutely cool jazzy soulful sound… i believe the term is blueeyed soul… check out Simply Red! Mick Hucknall is gifted. the most famous song being „holding back the years“ or „ money s too tight to mention“. but please please listen to a live version.Seph… LIVE! because live sounds just the same as stufio album… and live today sounds just the same as live about 40years ago. honestly! for a live performance nowadays check out Simply Red symfonica in rosso ( any of them but i also like the song „stars“ a lot. ENJOY
i pushed them a little to hard, i posted 200 videos which had their songs in them over the space of 9 months. Most reactors might do 1 or 30 songs of theirs and not even get noticed. but they start paying attention when one channel starts posting more then a few :(
This LP is special… « Chill » clearly pure Matin Gore electro style. Without any doubt i think Martin Gore did it almost alone. I don’t think there is lots of differences between demos and final take… So different they done before a new area, forgetting samples and sound research and the debut of Martin «love at first sight » with analog and modular synths… Quite minimal electro except ONE TRACK ! A UFO track is hiding in the middle of this LP ;) When you will listen to « I feel loved » more more more classical DM track style and maybe too much a disco floor track ! The second single they will perform live only a couple of time sadly. But you will hear it doesn’t fit with the rest of this LP 😅 Should have been released out of this LP ! AND for the little history at this period NAPSTER was famous ! And i discover this LP maybe several months before its official release as it leaked on NAPSTER i think in memory 2 months before ! I remember on the radio a special with the guys loading from NAPSTER all the tracks, spreading them live on radio directly. I was very disappointed by this LP strange feeling so different that wasn’t at this time what i excepted from a DM album sadly even if it is good but… maybe the one i don’t listen to ! And about this leak, Dave Gahan told he knew that by surprise when a friend of him called him and told him…
Exciter had it's place, but imo the next album after Playing the Angel is much better as a whole. It's more organic sounding and flowing more then the much more digital sounding Exciter.
Shine captures well the mood of Exciter, it is Depeche Mode lounge style. For me it lacks of that Depeche weirdness, good melodies and its just too slow. My least favourite album but I'm very curious about your reactions!😁
It's interesting. I and many of my fellow Gen X friends and family insist that DM got better and better. Sure, no more Black Celebration or Violator, etc, but they had not only reached financial freedom to do what ever the f they wanted, they were determined not to repeat past formulas. They always wanted to try new things. Explore new avenues. I get so frustrated when people criticize later DM. I love you all, don't get me wrong. But DM has literally been my favourite band since I discovered them in 1982. Somebody was my wife and my first dance wedding song. There's no BAD Depeche Mode Era. There's just the incredible life and times of Depeche Mode. For better and for worse. ❤
@@thekevindeucey sure they had still great albums post Sofad, just Exciter in my opinion is the least Depeche-style driven, monotonous, very mediocre comparing to Memento Mori or Playing The Angel which are in my opinion (Ultra also!) great albums.
For me slow songs are usually boring in general, when you listening to whatever musicians. But they made it sound fantastic, because it is also whole album's thing instead of just some intermission filling. Well, same for the Coldplay I guess, it is also their thing. )
@@crisgriffin3042 there's a lot of great slow DM songs. I think the main issue is that Exciter songs are mostly lacking of good melodies and there is poor choice of sounds. Breathe (pure torture), I Am You (OMG! Yawning), Lovetheme, Easy Tiger lazy ass instrumentals, Comatose...the second half of the album is really the worst of DM's discography.
I like Exciter but DM definitely got back to their signature sound more so on the album after this, Playing the Angel, that's the best DM album from that decade imo.
The verses are still ok, but then nothing fits together anymore. The sound technicians are totally in the dark. I think Exciter is the album where no one in the band knew what to do next. The songs on this album are at best suitable as background music while shopping, sorry.
As someone put it below, this is Depeche mode lounge style - rather than techno style in my opinion - with the influence of soul in lounchebar style. This is Depeche as background music in some slightly more luxurious bar in 2001. Although there is an exception, this is the general feeling of this record. But I could live with that if the quality of the songs had been stronger. I would probably pick zero songs from this record if I were to list a top 30 or 40 list of Depeche Mode songs. My favorite on the record is "I am you".
It's a banger! One of my all time favorite DM songs that doesn't get the credit it deserves. Thanks for another great reaction Seph.
Damn, Dave’s voice sounds so good here. 💫 I remember someone said earlier that they have a lot of German techno influence in this album.
I really love this song. Very original, great lyrics and Dave at his very best. He sings with such a lush and smooth quality - quite unmatched.

Great reaction seph. You'll probably find dm had a lot of influence on techno. Tracks like the extended version of shout : )
Unpredictable yet it sounds like Depeche.
