Carat & Co. Defines Luxury In Flushing: AAPI Businesses Shaping America | Forbes

- Americans of Asian ancestry have been part of the story of the United States for over a century. Despite a long history of setbacks ranging from the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to the more recent wave of COVID-19 related hatred and violent attacks, AAPI communities represent one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country.
For many AAPI families, the ability to survive, prosper and build a better life for future generations has been through entrepreneurship - everything from owning a small business to building a national household name.
Carat & Co. started when Allen Mon moved to the United States and opened a small stall at a flea market. From there, he built his company to be one of the premier watch and jewelry shops in the New York area. His children now run the business by his side, combining Mon's traditional business practices with new strategies to increase their growing online presence.
In this four-part series, we talked to family-owned and operated businesses where both the elder and newer generations are hard at work, to find out how they started and what the American Dream means to them.

Great family story! Thank you for sharing this piece. Your family is incredible! You have all honored your mother for sure. Sometimes I want a little watch content but maybe not a review. This was a great break from reviews. Having said that, your content is awesome 👌 Keep up the great work
Thank you for your continued support AAPI and you of course Forbes.

Was it really inspirational
@@robertrichards1040 Going to a new country empty handed. Something nonimmigrants will never understand.
@@ismaylovpetrovich6876 where are you from
@@robertrichards1040 to have come from a foreign country with nothing but clothes on his back and a determination to succeed, create a business and become wealthy within 1 generation - that's inspirational.
And as Ismaylov said, most nonimmigrants would not understand that achievement.
I love the story and how he built this business. Can I state the obvious, after all, if your going to be a FAMILY GUY - you might as well look like him.
How is Asian hate connected to jewelry? 🧐
Why wouldn’t it?
@@trowawayrizzay It could be, but Forbes is an economy, business media.
As you can see, the video isn’t really about the jewelry or watches, but showcasing an American Dream - in fact an Asian American dream of an Immigrant who came here with no money, put himself through school, taught himself business skills and built his business over 38+ years. It’s about showing a positive example of Asian Americans in light of the anti-Asian hate that has been happening. Our store has been rooted in the heart of Chinatown Flushing for over 25 years and without our community we wouldn’t be here as well. It’s a story of Flushing and we’re lucky to be featured.
@@MinuteMon Thanks you for your answer, now I get it. 🙏🏻
It's smart watches now. Let's all eat balut!
asians have the highest education and income rates and community cohesion of any race in the US. So this video showing a bunch of rich well-off Asians is a perfect example of the average AAPI citizen of the US. Successful and well-off.
Everyone knows that Asians have to work extra hard compared to blacks or whites to have success.
@@ismaylovpetrovich6876 FOH PETROVICH WITH THAT SOVIET CAPPPP
@@trowawayrizzay You do realise that I am helping Asians right? Harvard and other Universities actually discriminate against Asians by increasing the SAT scores for eg. This is only one instance of US institutionalized racism.
@@ismaylovpetrovich6876 say less, u right
Unfortunately Democrat ran cities will only see a rise in crime. Great story, even through the trial & tribulations of life, you don't give up.
Can't speak properly but still became a millionaire.Thought he wouldve learnt to speak better after all these years
That makes his success even more impressive, in my opinion.
@@BB-gl7zt That’s a very nice compliment to Allen thank you.
Allen’s spoken in front of many CEOs and Presidents of these luxury companies just fine, but would you believe that he was nervous for this interview? He woke up at 5am that morning to rehearse the interview in the mirror and made pauses to make sure he didn’t say “um” - therefore as his son, I’m even more proud of him for going out his comfort zone to share his story.
Nice anime profile pic my guy you a Uchiha?
@pk_paradza I am not sure how to comprehend your sarcasm….how is your second language skill?
