    Nice job. The resistors are giving the right resistance! Impedance is not a static thing. Impedance is a specific of an AC circuit.

    You may want to point out to viewers the fact that a relay can have "bad" contacts as well as an open coil. I believe those strips w/heat sink compound are not there to help transfer heat, but are electrical insulators. Solder wick w/flux would be safer to the pc board traces and much quicker as well. Regards P.S. the longer you apply heat to your solder joint, the more you risk overheating that new component, and damaging the board. Solder should flow and be done within a second or two.

    • @VinnyGjokaj
      @VinnyGjokaj  8 років тому +1

      You are completely correct!!! it was a new soldering iron, it was my first nice one and I've kept it at a lower temp to try and only do fine soldering and hopefully prolong its life! I'm a electrical engineer and do more fine point soldering on circuits! I blew this amp a little bit ago and it was sitting and i thought id repair it! If you are into audio you should check out my Ipad install in my car!

      I love Solder Wick as much as the next electronic technician, but, you have to keep in mind that Solder Wick can short circuit a charged capacitor to an integrated circuit, and....well, You just damaged the chip, and the board. I learned that the hard way on an NES game system, that I was working on for my brother. I messed up a chip that's discontinued. If you like to use solder wick, make sure that you keep it short, whilst desoldering.

    This guy actually knew what he was talking about, you could tell by the terminology he used. The only thing I woulda done differently is grabbed the cutoff legs with a pliers first and yoinked em out before using the desoldering tool to clean the holes. I see now he did figure that out eventually :P

    I was hoping this would be one of the ones that helps me out a little more, it is really apparent that this one ( video) is more lost than i am, even 19 years ago. it does serve a purpose though man. i am sure it has helped other people in ways that you may not have intended. like, if yu don't know what you are doing do not work on some expensive stuff, pic some old cheap stuff. that's a big one
    the metal draws heat away from the components, every and any way that heat can be dissipated is a GOOD thing. the MOSFETS are on the rails because they get hot AF, some amps are fan cooled, some are assisted by fans but all of them have heat sinks of some sort.
    anyway my search is on. OH your amp got hot and popped after 4 years of abuse. it was probably a small amount over a long while. if you blew a sub that sudden change in ohm could do it, if the amp was constantly having to pull more from smaller wiring that could do it, it could have been sudden but probably not.

I ordered some to replace the 3 but it still doesn't turn on. Any suggestions? I'll be going back to it to look at the parts you replaced as well.

    Tip for soldering, you have the tiny wire and the nice soldering iron, all u gotta do is heat it up for a few seconds before adding the solder i add solder between the tip and the connection bad, and then keep holding the soldering iron on for a few seconds after i stop adding solder and it wont look so dull, you have cold solder joints the solder is basically just sitting on top not really flowed into both the pad and the pin, i can tell by the lack of shine and the way it looks grey and how u took the soldering iron off immediately after adding solder you have to hold the soldering iron on for a few seconds after to let everything flow together to = temps

    I have a question that I hope to get help with. Never doing any repair myself, the power rail caps melted off the board (05 clarion dpx11500) but amp worked up to that point, had a second battery and fuse between batteries blew causing it to run off back battery until melting point, would putting in rail caps backwards cause it to push voltage from power inputs instead of taking it in? I think maybe manufacturer of caps put indicators of negative backwards as I put them in same as old caps and remaining caps before changing them all and made sure polarity was correct by connector wires. Or could it be something else? I would try to send it to you but cant afford shipping international.

    I originally thought one of my channels blew on my amp. Did a ton of research on forums before realizing I'm an idiot for not thoroughly checking over external possibilities. While I was reading through various old threads I came across a car audio tech speaking with a layman. He insisted that the amp be brought in to a shop and professionally have the power drained out of it. Apparently they can hold lethal amounts of charge for months after disconnect. Is this an issue you've heard of before? It's got me nervous if I do ever have to access the inside

    Few tips, buy 50 ft roll of chem-wik by chemtronics for $18 on ebay, for removing excess solder on joints or bridged ones, it is made in america, secondly next time remove and clean the thermal pads and reapply new paste between the heat sink and pad! Clean all the Transistors then reapply new paste to them as well! If your pads are gone or shot, buy some 30mm wide Kapton tape, clean the surface it will be stuck to and apply it and cut it to size after it is applied to the heat sink! Make sure there are no bubbles and if there are screw holes use a pin or very small screw driver to poke the hole through for the screws, then apply thermal compound to the transistors, diodes etc before reassembly!
    I am self taught, but have repaired amps that had completely shot, chewed and missing traces to working order! For that I use copper shielding tape and never wire! But some of my faves that I kept are Earthquake 400TX, Kenwood Excelon KAC-X1R Class D and Orion HCCA 225G4 modified with 10,000 Uf caps "1 Ohm stable Class A/B"! Some I sold or still have are Zeus 600 "API Brand", Oldschool Lanzar Optidrive 2300, Diamond Audio 300x1 class D, polk mono block, ppi's, one I did repairs for are sony's and audio pipes, MTX's and Crossfires! The way I look at it, I am helping the environment by refurbishing what would be waste!

      @VinnyGjokaj  8 років тому

      Really? That cheap for wik, awesome! I will have to get me some!! I am slowly building up my tool collection, i would love to get a nice desoldering station, but im a college student on a tight budget!! Does kapton tape transfer heat well? is it thermally conductive? I use it on some of it on my boards for my job before they go into a metalizing chamber but i wasn't aware that it can conduct thermal energy well!

    • @LuxorVan
      @LuxorVan 8 років тому

      Vinny Gjokaj It resists thermal break down and is used to replace thermal pads, it does very well, some car amplifier distributors use it for a thermal tape, some subwoofers use only kapton based voice coils, it works well on amps! It prevents grounding and is very tough, it is sometimes used to protect areas of aboard when removing chips with high heat!

    I have an older clarion apx150001, had it in a vehicle with a second battery on 4 10s, fuse between back battery and front battery blew so it ran a few minutes off back battery before shutting off but after it did I noticed some rattling around in it, was some of those transistors you said would dome up, it melted them off the board, replaced them and now it powers on but arcs out and blows fuses and draws a very high current while melting a 0 gauge power wire. I see the Spartans shirt, are you in Michigan perhaps? I could pay yout to fix it, it was a monster when working and would like it fixed. get with me and I'll give you my contact info and most Likely business as well.

    Set the hakko iron temp 700f Use some good quality lead solder 60/40 and gel type flux.
    That car amp has been out side in the cold and will have oxidation on it hence using flux when you repair it. When mosfets blow check diodes and resistors and winding for a short.
    They sound like a jealous lot on here. Because you probably have bigger shoulders and they have and better looking most of them are. Good day.

      @@VinnyGjokaj well I dodged a bullet somehow my pioneer headset to a dump at the exact moment?? I swapped in another head unit after bench testing the amp and it worked fine, kinda... The problem it has now is that on my bench and in the vehicle now it sounds distorted upon turning on for about 2 minutes the poof it clears up and sound great.... Like a component had to warm up? It doesn't feel warm to the touch it still feels ice cold where I live in Maine and it's winter now, but I've never had an amp affected by the cold... It works now this initial problem is kinda annoying but once going problem free. The only thing I've deciphered from Google searches is could maby possibly be causing it is old caps causing it it is a 20ish year old amp but is in excellent condition in my mother's mustang for 13ish years the pulled out and mothballed, it's never been pushed hard at all it was way overkill for her needs. I would love to repair it seems I've found US Acoustics is one of the "better" brands and a good brand true 65w x4 amp is not cheap...the closest one to mine is $230 now, they were made by Zed in the US just before mine so mine was made in Korea but is a quality unit so I'd like to keep it.

      Capacitors usually go bad for various reasons. It doesn't mean that anything else is broken also.. Its usually just the electrolytes in the Capacitor drying up and it makes them go bad! It dries up from heat most of the time.

    • @VinnyGjokaj
      @VinnyGjokaj  4 роки тому +1

      From what you’re saying it’s more then likely the power line on the board frying from the large amounts off current draw or the transistor(mosfet) blew from not being able to dissipate the heat. From the burning smell it’s probably the transistors which would rather be easy to fix, just put in new ones. Capacitors in these amps are used for two things, 1 filtering of the noises so you only output the music and not annoying buzzing sound, 2 stored power for when large amount of current is needed. So I’m really doubtful that it’s broken capacitors. When capacitors die it’s obvious because they’re usually bulged out at the top

    • @VinnyGjokaj
      @VinnyGjokaj  8 років тому

      It would basically be the same way. Like i said in the video, if the capacitors have a cross on the top and it looks like its sticking out its blown and needs to be replaced. You should replace it with the same value because its the lowest risk. Depending on where in the circuit the capacitors are putting higher or lower values could create oscillations in the circuit and give you unwanted noise. It would basically be the same approach. You should just desolder the old one and mark where the strip is (The strip shows polarity, negative side) and just put in a new one and solder it up.

    • @VinnyGjokaj
      @VinnyGjokaj  8 років тому

      ssg red its not fish oil lol! its actually liquid electrolyte, and yeah that doesn't sound to unrealistic. It could be Filter capacitors on the main power input. It usually there to filter unwanted frequencies that could create unwanted noise through out the amplifier at various stages. While it does still work it would be a good idea to replace those because you may start notice noise.

      SiL3nT. 0wNaGe usually if a resistor burned up that means a lot of current was being pulled. When a Transistor/Mosfet burns it can be shorted or act like a short to ground. Have you seen anything that looks burned or melted inside the amp?

      Vinny Gjokaj no just that one tiny resistor. I read somewhere if one burns it’s best to replace the entire vertical row not sure how true that is but I only replaced the one. Everything else looks fine inside
