I remember there being a huge issue in 1993 with them involving an E. coli outbreak that killed 4 kids about the time they seemed to disappear from IL. Though I couldn't find anything about that being the cause of them leaving at the time. What I did find is that this year, there were 13 Jack in the Box's in IL. However the owners of the franchise both in IL and Missouri filed for bankruptcy in February due to the pandemic. They have now all closed.

The problem was traced to a meat processing facility owned by the Vons supermarket chain not properly maintaining the cleanliness of their meat grinders. But also, states like Washington and Oregon got hit the hardest because their cooking temperature mandates were set too low. California didn't get hit as hard because the state's temperature mandates were higher. A higher temperature could've saved a lot of grief.
After Washington and Oregon raised their temperature mandates, Jack in the Box needed to make their image over. In the fall of 1994, they started an ad campaign called "Jack's Back" which continues to this day. It began with Jack (a character in a suit and an oversize Jack head mask played by the ad company exec who dreamed up the campaign) walking into Jack in the Box headquarters and blowing up the board of directors, the ones who blew him up in 1980.
(I'm a former Chicagoan now living in Los Angeles.)

@@dalethelander3781 Vons That Supermarket Chain is from the Los Angeles area. I had no idea they were a supplier of Jack in the Box ground beef at the time of the E.Coli incident in the 1990's. And yes Jack in the Box is from California and they are still big here in the entire state.

I love seeing these vintage commercials. I wonder if anyone has or knows about the animated 1970s Jack In The Box ads, besides the three [Baseball, In The Park, and one simply titled Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970s] already on UA-cam? I've been searching for some forever. Also, fun fact, Paul Winchell did the voices, and you can especially tell with Jack and Onion Ring Thing.

They were in Chicago until my sophomore year of high school (79-80). You used to go to the drive-thru and talk to the clown. From what I was told, there was couple more in that area - NW Highway and Palatine Rd (torn down/now a Walgreens) and Kirchoff Rd in Rolling Meadows (Now Fratello's Hot Dogs and the building still looks the same). Also, that Jack/Wendy's on Dundee was bought by Krispy Kreme, so watch for that to change soon. The Pizza Hut on Rand was open as late as 2003 (memories of taking my daughter for the lunch buffet after she was finished for the day in Kindergarten).

There were two that I recall, in the far northern suburbs; Zion had one on Sheridan Rd (the building later was used for a real estate agency) and one in Waukegan at Grand and McAree, across from Quonset Pizza (legendary to Waukegan). As I remember, the food was no worse nor especially better than any other fast food joint. I DID like the apple pies they had. The tacos, like Jack Demus said, were like the ones you can get at Burger King. I think it was a trick of youth that only anyone under 25 thought those tacos were good (though to be fair, I do still like BK's tacos in that weird sort of "yeah-they're-lousy-but-oddly-good way).
