- Thousands of UK workers went on strike for better pay in 1979 as soaring inflation hit the country, known as the Winter of Discontent.
While schools and airports were forced to close, the most infamous incident took place in Liverpool, as striking council gravediggers led to dead bodies piling up.
During the 10-day strike, bodies were stored in a factory hired by the local council, with as many as 150 bodies lined up at one stage.
This caused national outrage, and many of the workers involved were vilified for their actions by the media, politicians, and even their own families.

If you don’t pay your cleaners, drivers, nurses and teachers decent wages, then why should anyone expect them to work? They are not a charity and are not saints。
It's all they are worth.
Same with carers. Absolutely crucial for society but treated like garbage.
@@skycloud4802 crucial because that’s what we are all awaiting and it’s a unpleasant end of life to have to think about!
If people don't do work then they will suffer die if they don't work too live.
Looking at the high cost of living striking workers cannot be blamed
Hi. I'm a Eu citizen and I dont understand something. If the UK did Brexit and therefore has a lack of workers since many people lost their right to work in the UK, how come salaries are low? I have a British fiance. If I move to the UK will I be well paid? (I have an MBA and speak 4 languages)
@@karimtemri1664 There is no worker shortage in the UK, there IS a shortage of people willing to work for poverty wages. Its why the UK allows illegal migration from France, low wage workers. "will I be well paid?" unlikely, the national average wage doesn't even cover the costs of rent anymore. Can't recommend going to the UK until the national workers revolt, strikes, pushes higher wages or lower costs, like rent controls and affordable travel. The UK is great if your rich, if not its a hell hole.
@@karimtemri1664 Company shareholders and owners prefer to have their employees suffer over reducing their own salaries, bonuses and ROIs . The money get's funneled to the 0.1% of the 0.1% . Most "normal" workers don't have the money to strike and anti union propaganda weakened the workers negotiation power over the last decades.
Don't forget companies employing lobbyists who make politicians to pass laws and regulations who are beneficial to those rich individuals and their businesses.
All of the above has been going on in the majority of countries and societies worldwide and is ever increasing in recent years.
@@karimtemri1664 No you will be homeles and not have access to a Doctor or Dentist.
The Tories hate the people.
Any old excuse. You think the ones who pay them don't suffer the same eh?
As someone not from the UK, I both love and am perplexed by the British use of overtly gentle language when describing travesties.
Good.
Because the elites want to soften the message that they've been greedy. Contrast that with the China bashing and psy-ops to distract their citizens and justify aggression.
I'd like the media would go on strike permanently -- on permanent strike for real. For good. Forever.
I've never seen a politician go on strike
You should come to Northern Ireland
😂😂😂
Of course, those are the lobbiests of the richs
What do you expect, ? People don't mind footballers getting payed 100,000 pounds per week for a frivolous job type, combined with sports channels and clubs allocation of funds which come from supporter's,. We can easily pay people in this country better we just need to direct our finances to the right sector/s
Absolutely hit the nail on the head. Here is my take on money. Why oh why does Elon Musk need so much money. Further, what about those who arent interested in football, (I love it) but thousands dont care about the game. They would rather be at the Riding Stables.
What do you think happens when the rich get richer and everyone else gets poorer?
Spartacus?
Now show us how you covered the strikes back then vs now and let’s compare the differences. 🤔
In America we send them to a funeral home and most of the time they sell body parts and tell the family you have been cremated
My Uncle and daughter died at this time. It was sad. However, their pay was pitiful.
Oh my God, that's kind of cool.
It’s about time Labour ended their strike and actually became an opposition instead of leaving it to the media!
Let's hope they don't go on strike now, with all the excess deaths and all... 👀
"somewhat unpleasant"...the 'ol Brit's dry wit. 😉
1979 is now today's news to BBC
considering all the $AFE & EFFECTIVE collateral damage fallout, the timings not great on this one
My grandmother died during the grave diggers strike so my father dug the grave, it also ended up on the BBC news, it's also on Top Of The Pops The Story Of 1979 to Pink Floyds Brick In the wall.
This needs to happen again, the only way the government will listen is if we cause such a ruckus the country stops for a day the impact that will have will cause a lot of issues.
Why doesn’t the BBC interview any of the millions of Republicans in the UK about Royal stories?
They weren't entirely on strike, they operated a skeleton staff....
The thing with all these strikes (which I understand and agree with if that's the course needed taken) but, when this attack on Ukraine is all over and things get back to somewhat normal, would those wage increases then be too much if cost of living goes back down ?, or will companies just keep the prices at the level they're at now to keep making easy profits ?
The cost of living has been on the rise for far longer then the Ukraine war has been taking place, When the war is over, Russia will most likely still want to put higher tariffs on gas as they will want to use the money to rebuild.
Not to mention the threat of this very same thing happening again in the near future and Russia trying to hold EU hostage again with Gas will leave many nations searching for alternatives to energy, be that other natural gas suppliers or greener energy options.
The increase in price for grain products doesn't effect us as much here in the west compared to other places, However the west tries to supplement the stuff that is missing, So while the prices will decrease a bit in that regard, It will be negligible at best.
What I'm getting at, is the inflation level will continue to climb for reasons not to do with the Ukraine war while wages have remained stagnant for years.
Exactly what happens when billionaires continue to offshore their social responsibility.
Guess I don’t get it. Family or friends can’t go dig the grave for a loved one due to laws? Union rules? Damned if I’d let that stop me.
It had nothing to do with the union they went on strike because of terrible working conditions and pay. Its the governments fault for allowing it to happen in the first place I wouldn't want to dig a grave in winter then eat my lunch next to it
@@nicholasjames6763 OK, thanks for the background. I’ve helped dig a grave since the grave opening quote was beyond the means of the family. I’ve also hand dug graves for two of my horses in clay and quartz rock soil, and that was a chore. So I can empathize with those that do it for a living, especially without mechanization.
Welcome to report that the director of Shanghai Public Security has obstructed judicial justice! Administrative reconsideration is also allowed when the evidence of the illegal and criminal facts of the rich second generation beating incident is conclusive!
I once knew an undertaker called Smith - and he referred to the cremations he arranged as a "Smith's Crisp." 🤔
when the government stopped paying enough.
People worry and care more about the dead than the living.
It is a good job the Gravediggers are not on strike now with all the Excess Deaths.
Excuse me for laughing, but the gravediggers are on strike?, I can't help but "die laughing" Jua jua jua! Funeral greetings from Medellin. Colombia 🇨🇴.
Hello Marta, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the Virus??
@@Trevorjennings679 I'm fine, I just have the laughing virus.
@@martagallo690 Lol. Well hope you’re having a nice and a wonderful day today??
@@Trevorjennings679 I am privileged, I am super well.
They aren't currently on strike, this is a report about a strike that happened in the 1970s. The BBC posted it today because currently there are many other different industries striking and so it's possible we could return to this situation
Please don't hurt them; let them buried.
⚠️ The unions in the UK are not the way they used to be when all the major unions joined together in the UK this is when the unions started to become a business for profit.
They set up strikes almost every year at critical times, postal strikes at Christmas, train strikes at Christmas & new year, medical worker strikes during a pandemic like now when 7 NHS Trusts have declared critical incidents, firefighters during Guy Fox night, teachers during student exams, airport staff during summer holidays.
I'm not saying workers shouldn't be part of unions, but union organisers are doing strikes at the worst possible time every year. It's its not fair on the general public, and who end up having to suffer especially when someone calls an ambulance for a stroke and it takes over 1 hour for an ambulance then the patients get took to hospital only to sit outside in an ambulance for 30 hours waiting on a bed to become available. Last week, 33 ambulances were parked outside A&E in England because there were no beds available, taking an ambulance and its crew off the roads for 30 hours.
If strikes are necessary, then they should be conducted and planned for days that will less impact the general public become all these strikes are just making the general public angry and less sympathetic towards striking parties.
The unions make lots of money when they organise strikes through donations, etc. This is why the unions these days are trying to set up as many strikes as possible throughout all sectors and industries.
PUTIN, PUTIN, PUTIN. People who go on strike around Christmas are not nice people. They spoil the one national happy time of the year. Well for the majority of us. Spiteful and deliberate. It has PUTINISM smeared all over it. Vile evil ,man.
One of the most ardent fans of the NHS, but this side of idolatry. Awful food, incompetence and far too many chiefs and not enough Indians. The staff are just fab, the sistem, CRAP

Hope the Necromancers go on strike too.
What kind of people go on strike just before Christmas. The one time of year the majority of us look forward to. Not nice people. Well, all those of you who can, go on strike now. Dont answer your phone, dont reply to letters, cancel appointments, cook up a good reason though and give plenty of notice. And, And, if you can manage it, dont buy anything new for the next month, two months would be better. Sick of these strikes happening again, had enough of them in the seventies. So, dont go to the hairdressers, the nail parlour, the barbers. Dont attend any club meeting etc, in other words, withdraw all your support from anything you can. You wont die and you will be better off. I have experienced these strikes before, SO I am on strike this time. What am I striking for? Normalcy and consideration for others and a vibrant happy country. Imagine the impact if we all did that for a couple of months. Just might jolt the system back to common sense.
The BBC occasionally takes decent stances. Cheers.

Let the dictatorship of Bangladesh be over and let the democracy be freed.
Meanwhile, in the US, low-paying jobs stayed low-paid. Want to survive? Take on a second job. Want to aspire to the "American Dream"? Take on a third job.
The dumb ones always blame the workers. Always.
They let the robber barons get away with everything and wonder why they're always poor.
Too many dead bodies since the jab!
Won't happen now, graves are dug by one man and his JCB
May be you have to change your Prime Minister again and again until you give up feeding bottle.
Gravediggin like I'm Ian Lowe's, movin east like them Mosley Shoals
Maybe hit an up like my hands black with coals
Baby and her mumma was my only goals
Funny timing this ...What with the bbc airing Dr Aseem Malhrota
Does guys called undertaker.... Why do the British call them gravediggers????
Because the grave diggers are the ones who physically dig the graves, while undertakers are the ones who prepare the bodies for burial or cremation.
no no in 1979 when bbc lost oil from shah of iran then these gravediggers had to be redesignated as oil diggers and sent to middle east
Wow I wonder why lazy people left their dead unburied because there was no man to hire to bury them.
Hello 💕😻Help me now please .💝🎄
Gonna smell like kebabs
Social engineering propaganda. Power to the people, down tools, get the Tories, Labour the EU and WEF OUT!!
Agreed
Don't like the fact of what happens when the rich get richer and everyone else poorer?
I'd prefer to rejoin the EU.
Because the grass IS greener the other side of the channel.
