Jeroen Tel years ago I read in the STIL notes for this game you converted the whole game soundtrack during a single night. That's impressive. I guess you've somewhat streamlined the working flow by the time, but you still managed to do an impressive job in a very quick time. Out of cuoriosity, which was the most difficult/challenging C64 you've done?
Hahaha! =D Kinda true about the "just a C64" in the heydays! (Seriously, I had no other way to truly create what I had in mind with sequencers or anything, so we created our own)... so much fun and apparently unique at the time! =)
I honestly think i was spoiled as a kid, it wasn't until i really got into my late teens that i actually started listening to "normal" music. After all, I had all this great music on my C64 and my Amiga, who needed commercial music? Thanks Jeroen :)
the added intro gives this rendition of the track so much more pop. kudos Jeroen, this is a masterpiece among many of his compositions with the SID chip
This version mesmerizes me, it has no right to sound to this good & sounds better than it's Arcade / Mega Drive counterparts, still blown away by what I'm listening to.....
When I think of C64 music, this is always the track that enters my mind. This song is more iconic to me than even the Commando theme. Definitely my favorite C64 song of all.
beats any other version 100x, including the arcade. i couldn't believe the sound engineering behind it when i heard it at the first time as a kid, and it's still amazing after many decades.
What a kind compliment! Did the whole conversion in 1 night, (believe it or not). But with full dedication! (I had to go to school the next day after that night and I fell asleep in my chair in school). =D
Jeroen, do you play classical piano? I just wondered, as you seem to have such a good feel for integrating the different parts in the music, like in this and the Stormlord main theme.
I play the piano, but not classical necessarily. My classical music "observation" / training came mainly from the fact my father, who had a choir practice at our home every week since I was age 0. They sang so many classical songs from so many ages. At age 5/6 I had them all in my head (all 4 parts of them, bass, tenor, soprano, etc.) musically and phonetically. Quite an experience. On top of that my mother had a brilliant musical taste for music, so she played lots of classical music (Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, but also Leonard Cohen, the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and so many more fantastic songs (harmonically and melodically correct) from many artist and band. She taught me how to play the Recorder (flute). On top of THAT my father was totally into some artists like Keith Jarrett (in my humble opinion a piano genius) and also adapted to new artists as they came along. He also was a piano teacher (at home). (We always had that piano since I was 0)... Music was just always there! Of course I listened to the radio for my "teenager favorites, mostly electronic first sample based electronic stuff from the early 80-ies"... It's too much too mention. My grandfather was a conductor of a (big) choir too and was one of the first to play the piano at "silent movies" in the late 1920's and 1930's. My uncle (and godfather) was a music teacher (and he is a brilliant pianist / composer!). All my other uncles and aunt from the Tel side of the family also play piano / compose. It was mandatory to take piano lessons for them. ;-) The list goes back even further, generations. I hope that answers your question. ;-) My sister, my brother and I I've just been blessed with a very musical background. Thanks for taking the interest! :-)
listen to 0:50 - 0:58. That's some swinging demostyle beats right there and you can only pull it off on a c64. It's a signature sound and if you try it on a different sound chip it just don't have the same impact. The earth shattering bass, the snare drum, the way the bassline and the synth is arranged, it's just perfection. Do a remix with a 4 to the floor drum kick and start it off with just a drum and the synth riff, oh man.
I never played this version of the game - in fact, I never played an C64 - , but that music made my mind imagine some spectacular scenes... I can assure that's, by far, the best version of this theme.
I lost the plot when I first heard this at around 8yrs old. I loved it so much !! Definitely the best version of the game. lol! Story time - I was in a music class at school and we had the opportunity to create our own song using the piano. When the teacher asked me to play something I tried to play this song using only my right hand. The teacher didn't say anything other then that was nice. Of course, she wanted me to come off and give the opportunity to another child. Haha! Goes to show how much I LOVED Golden Axe back then and my love heightened when I purchased the game on my Atari ST (Tyrus Flare's lovely thighs...) and at the arcades. Gosh, what a game! Dammit that the series dropped so hard.
One of my favorite tunes on the old C64. Back in the day played more on my C64 then on my NES. Nothing comes close to good 8-bit music. Jeroen Tel, geweldige prestatie! Componisten als jij op de C64 hebben van de computer mijn favoriet gemaakt. De C64 zal altijd een plaats in mijn hart dankzij jou en andere.
Wonderful music work! It`s just composed by Jereon Tel with a closed eyes, without description =)) His style I`ll know even on the Mars! Great arrangement as always! (even if I never played C64 and never seen this game when I was a child).
@@julienbraudel7109Okay, he's not the original composer. But he did THIS arrangement and expanded the original composition for the better. Ok, produced it - as he said in his comments here.
woah Jeroen! the RM break before the arps at 0:50 is very awesome! btw how do you swap the filtered instrument and the non-filtered instrument without still being filtered?

@cheetahman91 mine is a UK pal c64 breadbin model. I thought there was something wrong with it, but it was the same on the VICE emulator on pc. I have tried downloading the d64 rom from other rom websites and it's the same!

Dude, you're a wizzard!
+Jeroen Tel : Hi Jeroen :) You got the arcade board in order to reproduce the musics on the c64 ? cheers !
+Marco Lizza Good job indeed, but "the whole game soundtrack" is somewhat limited on C64, so it's not the whole thing. :)
Some heroes don't need a cape. Just a C64, and Jeroen Tel is one of them.
But they do need a tape to record their masterpieces.

I think it'snot right to compare those tracks, Commando is absolutely epic music. But I appreciate the sentiment! :-)

Jeroen Tel knew he couldn't reproduce the Arcade sound so he used what the SID chip could do to make make a unique sound.
Wow better than the Genesis version theme for sure
better even than the arcade in my opinion..
Agreed
The mix from Death Adder to the Wilderness is absolute perfection...
