There are a lots of games with fantastic music/intro.. I remember fernandez must die or platoon, red heath, death wish 3,x-out.. I owned a c64, msx, spectrum zx48.. very nice era.
This tune was very ahead of its time, especially it being so long and extensive for the C64. It's like the Blue Monday of video game music. Matt Gray is definitely one of the most underrated composers of all time and deserves more praise.
Matt went on to be quite succesful as a producer. After the C64 music he went on to write and produce his own dance music on an independant label. He DJ'd for a bit in clubs. He was a part of Motiv8 whose most famous track was Rockin For Myself. He's worked on remixes for Pulp (Disco 2000). Later on he was part of the production company who won an Ivor Novello award for Cher - I Believe. He is still working as a producer today. He still doesnt wear a belt.
I'm a massive and unashamed Rob Hubbard fan but he's one of several absolute legends on the SID scene. These Matt Gray tracks for Last Ninja 2 are some of the best compositions I've heard.
I was just thinking of something... game music isn't just background ambience, it's also a reflection of the main character's spirit, personality, and skill! Since you can't talk to the ninja, this music is the best way you can relate to him
Man.. after over three decades this glorious piece of music still gets me all up in arms right away. Makes me want to grab that ol' katana and beat up some ninjas.
As the C64 was dying, Jon Wells was out there trying to save it. This was one of Jon's big efforts to try and save the scene, and bring one final Last Ninja to the C64. The programmers at System 3, really knew how to push the C64 to it's limits. It's amazing how they managed to make these games, with such limitations that the hardware posed in the 80's.. Some amazing tunes for sure, the last ninja series is really epic, and should be in every serious collectors inventory:D
Randomly started listening The Last Ninja musics here on YT and got here. I played TLN2 at the time, but I didn't remember this one. And HOLY SHIT, this is so friggin' awesome. Amazing piece of music.
I had forgotten just how good this ingame score is. Matt Gray made some unbelievable tunes for System 3 back in the day. Check out his Dominator score also.
This song, and the song for first level on last ninja 1, is.. well to me at least, the best c64 music. Im so impressed at how well time has treated this song. Its a classic. Timeless.
D3thpool Yeah in 2014 im still sitting here getting goosebumps by these songs. The melodies are timeless, probably the most amazing that has hit my ears.
I am with you, man. LN 2, LN, Yie Ar Kung Fu, those golden days. Later on, only the EVE Online soundtrack really made an impact on me, but otherwise most gaming music goes in one ear and out the other.
@@MudTheGamer Mass Effect trilogy has some nice musics. But where are those, of which you can whistle like super mario? Is the idea "simple is beautiful" dead? I am sure some can do this. Make game music great again! (for able to whistle, the genre is quite great).
Consider that each level was only about 50 kb in size and the programmers somehow cramped a slew of awesome hi-res graphics and a fantastic music track into each of them.
+Matt Gray Sir, you are too epic to address directly. But I have to dare to, because your Driller tune's surreal atmosphere has become a MAJOR part of how I perceive music. Thank you a million times. Yours sincerely, Jakub Krcma
There's no words to describe this ridiculously awesome piece of music. I just can't find any. But it's probably my favorite tune of all times. And it's metal!! \m/
Grew up on various C64 games and i still play them occasionally (thru emulator, but better than nothing). This soundtrack is easily one of my favorite game music tracks along those of games like Ghosts'n'Goblins, Forbidden Forest and Enigma Force.
The start and main melodic line is really awesome, but what do we have next... It seems unbelievable how many marvellous "small" melodies Matt intervowen into one "computer tune". 0:50-1:21, 2:07-2:22, 4:57-5:40. And the best part 3:32-4:26 is utterly brilliant. Masterfull melody. It sounds to me like some "Honor theme" or "meditation theme". I see one man gathering his inner power to fullfill his quest. Last ninja vs the whole city. Music heals our souls...
"Beat up ninjas"? You WERE the ninja - you beat up a random selection of 80s gang members and drug manufacturers...I don't recall a single enemy ninja. Did you ever even play this game? That sustained bass note in the beginning still "gets" me, even to this day I remember the first time I played this game (got it as a Christmas present).
Love it. It's so varied with many different sounds. Just amazing from start to finish but the real highlight for me is from 2:07 and the scale slide. Awesome.
Therefore not being restricted to just moving on the path. This was shown in a test demo of one of the Last Ninja 2 levels, where the Ninja could actually go on the grass. A map was even created of one of the levels proposed by Jon to be in the game, but sadly System 3 turned down Jon's proposal to bring the game to the C64 (Even with Jon willing to take the whole project on himself), so Jon moved on.
For me personally its definitely the best C-64 tune ever. But there are hundreds more out there that deserve this title as well! The SID will live on forever! And that is because of you guys.. That are able to program it & those who love listening to it! 8-bit for the world! :D
