My flyhal fc600 (16889a pro) came also with a problem with bonding the ESC.. It was too close to the front and the servo's arm was brushing it. It was my first RC car (bought after seen this yours video) and I had no idea how was attached the ESC. Google it, I took it off, not easliy, and it's still hanging around today. It doesn't go anywhereand that way it cools down much betterNever tried a 3s, but after wasting 3x1000mA bat, it becomes hot enough to alter behavior and mix functions. Throttle and steering start to conflict. Once cooled, everything returns to normal. However, I'm afraid that with a 3s it may burn out quickly. I love this little car. HBX makes very well thought out cars. And it is on the market with other brand names at prices that are truly for the People. Good and cheap, truly! Other brands are genuine 'mistakes'. 14209? Big rocket power motor, nothing else. I've already broken 3 front shock absorbers. Too heavy and too little damping travel. The final attempt will be installing 120mm wheels with 15mm axle extenders to see if they can lift off the ground and prevent damage to the shock absorbers. Once upgraded to actual oil filled shocks, I’ve found that I like 80 wt fluid in these. I have not done any changes to diff oil yet, but these diffs probably wouldn’t hold oil very well. Just a thick grease
You probably will run into issues with the brushed version trying 3s. I don’t believe they are the same esc. I can’t say for sure it won’t work since I don’t have one, but I think someone else told me they tried it with not great luck.
The esc handles well this big tires? I tried 96mm crawler tires with 80g each on the brushed version and it improves handling and jump control but the esc keeps cutting out due to motor temperature. True that my brushed motor came from factory completely blocked (dont ask!) and even with 2 heatsinks it becomes hot with lipo batteries. It was supposed to have at least 2 vent holes just like the replacement motor i ordered!
The frames are very similar but the 16889 has a better rear suspension in my opinion. The pro also performs better cuz the bigger motor. Check my links to see if I had any coupon codes, but usually the price is very minimal to get the pro over the 16890.
@@DerbyCityRC thanks a lot! Being new with so many options out there it's a bit overwhelming! Seperate question I got the 16998 and Destroyer both brushed for about $40 each new. Worth keeping them or should I return and just lookout for the pro brushless forms? I know the brushed can be upgraded and etc, but is it worth it? Also I'm not getting the better remote with the different adjustable settings with the brushed. What do you think? Thanks
I know it ls overwhelming! I think I would return and go with the brushless ones. Check my most recent links cuz I may have coupon codes in there, but yes I think that would be better for you. Upgrading costs more than buying it with the upgrades already on it.
Good Bash Evan, these little HBX and SG trucks are very durable, i have three over the last couple years, 2 hbx 16889 brushed and brushless and also the SG1601 Pro brushless which is basically a Orange shelled 16889 and tried to break them and they come out unscathed. I ran the 16889 on 3s many times and transfered the esc and brushless motor in other cars and its never given me an issue on 3s at all.
Thanks David! Yes these trucks are little beasts! Looking forward to running 3s on the pro. Maybe the esc I have in this car is a bit tired lol It’s certainly been abused!
Have been running my sg1601 (same truck as hbx) on 3s and it cuts out or hits the brake the same. I can't decide if it is the motor or the esc. Only thing that broke was the rear plastic gear that goes to the diff. I put on the metal driveshaft upgrade but kept the plastic ring gears on the diffs. Curious how long they will last. Car has at least 50 2s pack with no breaks. 2 pack on 3s stripped plastic. I also run a Xinlehong q901 on 3s and it doesn't have the cutting out issue. I am going to try swapping the esc from that into the sg/hbx and see if that changes anything.
I’m pretty sure the esc is the issue. It doesn’t have the amp capacity. Haute hit and miss on 3s. Occasionally it works ok. Could be temperature related. Very durable trucks!
@DerbyCityRC So out testing the sg1601 with the q901 esc. Didn't do it at first but once the motor got hot it started acting up again. I believe it is the motor when it gets hot. Truck does feel better with the q901 esc. It has a better throttle range not as punchy.
@DerbyCityRC Swapped to a 2845 3930kv and it didn't studder at all with the xinlehong 35a but shortly into the 2nd pack the esc popped. It now resets every time you hit the throttle, lol. Will try the original 25a just for giggles before a 60a and new reciver go in.
@DerbyCityRC So put the stock 25a that says 7.4v only and ran two 2s packs and one 3s pack no studder. Car has the full metal rebuild done and a 2845 3930kv. Not sure how that esc holds this. Testing complete it is 100% the stock 24mm can that is responsible for the studdering. I really should have a youtube channel I have been recovering and having surgeries for a few years from someone running a red and injuring me this hobby is my daily sanity, haha.
Have you had any of your 1/16 esc blow from running 3s? I have The FC600 and from what ive read the motor is a 3000kv and it handles 3s better than the 3800-3900kv motors. Is that true?
I have not had any of those blow. They act a little weird on 3s sometimes though. I don’t have much experience trying batteries with different kvs, but from what I hear, typically lower kvs will handle higher S’s better 👍
Update: did some runs today with my hbx's and wanted to give a warning to fellow rc enthusiast's, ive been using blue loctite on my wheel nuts, and realized if you use to much, loctite will disintegrate plastic wheels... i literally ruined 3 full sets of wheels... i wish i had it on video... the centers of all my wheels completely broke... be warned, dont be dumb like me, if your wheel nuts come loose, use just a drop if you have to... 12 wheels in the trash...
I Love this little Rc and got the truck version also same brand only on the truck also have the esc breaking for some reason so on the truck just lowered a tiny bit on the remote speed and stopped doing that guess to much power with 3s Lipo, got mines for over a year now on both and they can take a beating and have not got any problem also running on 3S Question how them big tires compared to the stock ones any big difference on the speed or getting better grip on the road ?
I have the truck version as well! Both great trucks. I really like the bigger tires. Better grip, better control, and can do flips with them on the air. I have even bigger tires than that on my 16889a pro. 👍👍
They would work on it, but they are the same diameter as the 2995 tires. Have you seen this video? ua-cam.com/video/GvNNjAeEn10/v-deo.html The 2995 is a monster! I love it with the setup I have in this video. Also, all links to the products I used are in that video’s description, including the big tires!
The bigger mah won’t add power, just run time. A bigger C rating may add a bit of power though. But yes, these trucks are definitely made for 2s. Any time I do 3, it’s really only for a few minutes.
Loved the new location and they really do take a beating. Every video seems to be getting better and definitely enjoying watching. Bought a pro because of your vids.
one of the shocks on my 16889 pro was leaking and lost some fluid. I have no replacement shock oil for it, so i improvised by using some light shock oil mixed with diff oil....worked kinda well but i accidentally made it a little bit too thick... doesnt affect the ride that much imo. i dont regret buying it at all....this is my first real RC car.
Well this one has upgraded metal gears, but yes bigger tires will absolutely kill the drivetrain quicker. Being a little easier on the throttle and brake can help a little bit, but still need to keep that in mind.
Really wanna run mine on the dumbo!! I had given chicadoo a 168 but i kind of took it back!! Pulled the wire out of the pro a conversions esc hittin a plastic jersey wall at makeshift sick skatepark down the road here
Awesome channel love the content I also love HBX I have the same ones you have but I would like to put those larger tires on mine can you post the link thanks.
Thanks so much!! Currently the only true 1/10 scale car I have is the JLB Cheetah. Which I don’t recommend. Lol. It’s fun, but if you’ve seen any of my latest videos on it, I can’t keep it from breaking lol. With 1/12 scale cars, my best one so far is the HBX 2995 (with upgrades). I’ve been eyeballing some Redcats and some Team Corallys that seem good, just not ready to get one just yet
Hi I have another quick one for you. I see that you are using the stocked metal dog bones in the rear - are you experiencing some bending in those as a result of a long travel distance in the shocks on big jumps?
Hello. Yes they do bend on occasion, but really haven’t been too bad. We finally did bend one bad enough that it was able to pop out and we lost it. But after quite a few months of hard jumps, that’s not really too bad 👍
Hard to say for sure. I’ve never had an issue on my 16889a with them, but If I put larger wheels on it, I believe they would probably break the plastic axles. But the 16889 family of vehicles, as far as I know, all come with the metal dog bones in the rear, just with plastic cups.
@@DerbyCityRC Thanks. The suspicion was that the plastic wheel cups absorb all the shock and breaks from time to time but I was afraid that after upgrading to metal wheel cups there will no one to take the hit instead of the dogbone, and therefore, it will bent. I will just give it a try and see.
Hi, great vid guys! Same issues with the Esc. None of my HBX likes to run on 3s, and Ive tried many lipos. My HBX16689A pro still going strong, doesn’t matter how you torture it!! but I had the same issues than you with the 901a and large wheels, diffs can’t carry on…waiting for new ones, but now it’s FWD only. By the way for the 901, I’ve solved the bouncy shocks adding thicker silicon and a dual setup at rear (without coil, just for rebound control)
Thanks!! I know! I wish they could take 3s a bit better. Very disappointed in the diff cups! I’ll be looking into a solution probably! That’s good to know about the 901 shocks. So leave one set of shocks with the spring son and the second set without springs? I was also thinking of trying to move the front shocks behind the control arms if they’ll fit. Haven’t looked into it yet.
@@DerbyCityRC I had an issue with the steering, it was pulling to the right but then I figured it out like an hour later using my dumborc controller so I deleted the comment 😅
Wicked video guys! I can’t believe you didn’t hit that pole😜🇺🇸 or tree or whatever it was in the parking lot! You were getting huge air I must say! Those Hbx 1/16ners hold up well don’t they💪🏼! Another truck you may want to look into that is equally durable is the Xinglehong Q903 1:16ner. The brushless one would be a great addition to your stunt fleet. Epic video my dudes. ❤️‘d every second! Take care fellas and have a great , blessed Easter!
Hbx and hosim durability amazes me for the price of there products. They must put them through decent factory durability tests, they both seem to get a lot more right than they do wrong.
@DerbyCityRC yeah ok, I only have the x07 and it seems tough, and all the tolerances seam awesome for a cheap rc. I wish WLtoys would take a leaf out of their book, and fix their diff issues, and brittle plastics, some of there RCs have potential, but just don't hold up at all. I ordered a mjx 10208 today. Frothing a bit for that to turn up!
@DerbyCityRC I only have the 124016. Steer away from the now after just too many repairs, for the amount of driving you get. Just a quick question for you I've been trying to find a size comparison between the mjx 10208 and the hbx 2996a. Am I correct in thinking the mjx is quite a bit bigger?
Hi man. This is an awesome channel! Love your videos. Qq for you: are you sure this 50w oil? I have tried that (factory team oil shock) and the shocks are so stiff I can't even press it with my finger... A quick look at google shows that the Arrma kraton shocks are using 43w oil so it makes me wonder if this is not a mistake 😀
Thanks! I appreciate that! Well I definitely used 50 wt oil. I also recently put 100 wt oil in my Kraton for our latest video. Now in some shocks, if you over fill them a little too much, they will not press at all. Also depends on the way the shock was manufactured. The shocks on one car may act different than shocks on another car with the same weight fluid because of the type of pistons used. Most likely the shocks in the hbx are not built to the same tolerances as the Kraton so would take a thicker fluid for the same results because it can easily pass by the piston, while the piston on the Kraton shocks probably seals a bit better. That’s an over-explanation lol. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the answer, I have bought the 16890 with your build because of this video and it is awesome. Once the oil replaced the car don't absorb shocks anymore (they do but they did its better with the stock oil) so this is still a mystery to me. Anyway I just ordered a new set of shocks. When you shock test the (drop it from a low point), does it bounce?
That’s great! I’m glad you like this set up! It bouncy a very tiny amount, only because of the tires . The rubber in the tires seem to make it bounce a millimeter or two. But definitely absorbs better than the stock fluid. That’s very odd that you had this issue with yours. You did get the upgraded shocks correct? Not using the ones that came on the 16890 originally?
@@DerbyCityRC I was definitely overfilling them! Works much better now. It does bounce a little bit but maybe I just compare it to how it was with the stocked tires. Thanks again and continue with the awesome videos. BYW I have seen you build of the HBX 2995 and it looks sick, started to collect the pieces and then realized the total price is about 400USD total (more than the kraton 4s) so I decided to wait a bit and if I see I continue to love it as I do now I will just buy the kraton 6s (saw your video of it as well :) ) Anyway, thanks a lot for the support and have a great day!
Great! Glad that worked! Yes the 2995 is a bit pricey the way I built it, but it’s a blast! 4s Kraton would be awesome too! Glad you like the videos, I’m gonna continue pounding them out as often as possible!!
@@DerbyCityRC I ordered a HBx 901a, what improvements could I make to gain speed without losing much acceleration? I also watched your video on the 901a it is great thank you
Awesome! I have a few videos on that car. Did you see this one? ua-cam.com/video/k-fXF03AkmU/v-deo.html My main suggestion is these tires. Plenty of acceleration. Even wheelies, which it had a hard time doing with the stock wheels. There’s a link to those tires in the video description 👍👍
Mine should be waiting for me when I get home. Definitely gonna put bigger tires ASAP.not gonna be as hard on it as you 2 maniacs 🤪🥸 so I won’t need to beef it up so much but nice to know if I do it’ll be SOLID 🦾

Great video. This is why I don’t bash large RC’s anymore! These smaller scale are so much more durable.

That’s a good idea.

Hi
I have another quick one for you.
@@DerbyCityRC Thanks!
So you won't suggest using the plastic dogbones on the rear instead?
Definitely worth a shot!! I am surprised how long it lasted before bending. It was on some big jumps too!
Whats the really small car in the beginning at 0:16?
If I remember right it’s the HBX 18859a. I think that’s the last time we ran it. It’s a good car just too small for me.
@@DerbyCityRC Thanks. Have you tried the Flyhal fc600 RC car?
You’re welcome!
No, but that seems to be the same as the 16889a pro with a different body, and maybe wheels.
Certainly seems like a good buy.
@@DerbyCityRC Thanks fríend.I just got home and had the flyhal fc600 at home. What a surprise my wife gave me. IM so lucky :-)
Wow that’s awesome!! Have fun!!
That 3s battery really makes those cars go!
Yes it does!!
Your comment about your 2995 disappeared before I was able to read it completely. Not sure why. What was your question?
@@DerbyCityRC I had an issue with the steering, it was pulling to the right but then I figured it out like an hour later using my dumborc controller so I deleted the comment 😅
Lol! Well good job! 🤣😁
@@DerbyCityRC turns out there is a knob that you adjust steering! My receiver has a gyro function. Any tips or ticks when or when not to use it?
Thats convenient!
I would say that’s a personal preference thing. Practice with it on, off, and in between to see how you like it and when.
I can't believe how much bashing that thing can take
It’s a beast!!
Great test of durability, some fantastic information for people wanting to buy one. Really enjoyed that dude and your almost at 1K come on!!
Yea, thanks buddy!! Glad you enjoyed it! I’m working on that 1k lol 👍😁
Thanks Robby!!
I’ve been told about that q903. Definitely will take a look at it!!
👍👍😁
Thanks a ton as always!!
The esc has a protective mod on it
That it does!
Just got home from school and what a surprice!
Awesome!!
1K Evan you shall go
Thanks!! 🤗😎
I love your videos man by Daniela
Thanks Daniela!!!
Love yours too!!
I forgot to mention mine does the same thing on 3s. It stops after the battery drains a bit.
Interesting! Mine my have done the same thing. Thanks!
Hbx and hosim durability amazes me for the price of there products. They must put them through decent factory durability tests, they both seem to get a lot more right than they do wrong.
Hosim had differential issues that they just recently seem to have fixed. So now it’s game on!
@shanemetcalf9713 yup I’m not a big fan of WL toys. The new crawler of theirs I reviewed a couple weeks ago was good though. The 10208 is quite good!!
@shanemetcalf9713 yes the 10208 is quite a bit bigger. 2996a is more of a 1/12 scale while the 10208 is an actual 1/10
Love it! Keep them coming. 😊
Thanks a ton! I definitely will!! 👍😉😎
this channel is so underrated!
Hopefully that will change!
Thanks so much for the kind words!!
@@DerbyCityRC keep up the good work.. i'll watch you grow❤️
Thanks! It’s great to have you! 🤗
@@DerbyCityRC dont forget me on you 10k subs mark 😂
Definitely not!! 👍😀😎😉
BYW I have seen you build of the HBX 2995 and it looks sick, started to collect the pieces and then realized the total price is about 400USD total (more than the kraton 4s) so I decided to wait a bit and if I see I continue to love it as I do now I will just buy the kraton 6s (saw your video of it as well :) )
Anyway, thanks a lot for the support and have a great day!
Great! Glad that worked!
Yes the 2995 is a bit pricey the way I built it, but it’s a blast! 4s Kraton would be awesome too!
Glad you like the videos, I’m gonna continue pounding them out as often as possible!!
I think this is the 1st video that you didnt break anything :D
Lol I know! And jumped it harder and faster than usual! 🤣
I wanna see your Kraton in the same test dang it!!👀
Working on it! lol Lots of Kraton Plans!
Its a little harder (financially) to buy parts for that one! lol
so cool
Thanks bro!!
Who is the best basher for you ?
My upgraded HBX 2995. Check this thing out! ua-cam.com/video/GvNNjAeEn10/v-deo.html
@@DerbyCityRC thanks !
You’re welcome!
@@DerbyCityRC I ordered a HBx 901a, what improvements could I make to gain speed without losing much acceleration? I also watched your video on the 901a it is great thank you
Awesome!
I have a few videos on that car. Did you see this one? ua-cam.com/video/k-fXF03AkmU/v-deo.html
My main suggestion is these tires.
Awesome!! It’s a great car, congrats!
I bet you end up jumpin’ her pretty good! Lol
