I have an idea that maybe pretty easy for someone handy like you. Rc driver has an lcd screen up in the back. You can just hang up a cheap lcd have it display a photo of your logo.
Your channel impresses me big time! You have a very unique style that keeps things fresh. Very entertaining without being irritating. I love that your kids are in the videos, they add a lot to the entertainment factor and you don't overdo it. Do you have a current preferred entry-level RC car? Something built in the style of the car in this video. Looking to stay below $200 and brushless.
Thanks, I appreciate all that! Well, what about the car in this video? It’s one of my favorites if you have access to Amazon, amzn.to/48UA8Mo right behind the new omni-terminator basic version which is $200 currently. Here’s my video on that: ua-cam.com/video/1rPEqOk0n74/v-deo.htmlsi=kOy236j4MbNFa9Aq I even just compared both cars in my most recent video.
I used to drool over this hobby as a kid, but could never afford it. I remember getting the xRC magazines from the library and day dreaming of building one. This is back when it was all nitro and NiMH. The Losi truggies with neon wheels were my soft spot. Anyway I impulse purchased this and some 3S lipos and hopefully it opens up the rabbit hole that FPV quadcopters did for me. Great review and glad to see the family spirit still alive out there in this crazy world.
@@DerbyCityRC upper A-arm. I've bought a few others (Slash and Typhon 3S) since so I am going to fix it and pass it on to someone else. I'm going to start racing at my local track as well so I realistically won't run it again. It gave me the excitement to go balls deep into the hobby so I don't regret it at all. It's a stout little truggy.
That was a great recommendation on the smaller hbx 16890SA and now I want this for easier steering but I still will always like ripping 3s on the sa . Seems like hbx is a good company . Everyone likes them in the comments and the products .
this is a bold statement. Your kid, kicking that battery box "ok see ya!" is a top 5 funniest moment on this channel. Dunno why,but I hit the freakin floor right then man lmao
I have the 2995 platform converted to Brushless. One thing that keeps failing is the center drive shaft. The hex tends to get rounded over time right where it inserts in the umbrella pinions driving front and rear diff. Rest of the platform is great bang for the bug.
I’ve heard that complaint one other time.(maybe it was you on Facebook lol). That’s so weird cuz with everything I’ve done to these, especially my 2995, I’ve never had that happen. I’m sure it will one day lol
Yes this is the weak spot in the drive train, only 3/16 or so of the hex shaft engages with the umbrella pinion, the shaft is too short I welded and filed material back on to my rounded shaft. Shows how tough the gears are on HBX, I would think that the shaft would win over the umbrella but nope! Running bigger or grippier tires will round the shaft quicker I found, I like the 2996a tires but the rims are brittle and crack quite easy. HBX has some silly design flaws that they don't fix just repackage. I love the way theses drive though!
Outstanding review as always! You test yours HARD like I wish I could but I just can't bring myself to break my car but thanks for doing it for the rest of us! I was curious what speeds you got on 3s with that LIPO. I managed to get mine up to 43 mph with a tiny 850 mAh and 46 mph on a 2,200 mAh 3s that does not fit in the tiny battery tray. I managed to get my up to 30 on 2s but I prewarmed my LIPOs before running them.
Thanks man, I’ve watched a couple of yours on it too. I showed the speed of 40mph. Did it 3 times in a row and always got exactly 40. Which is crazy cuz it’s supposedly a 120c and was 1500 mah. Though they probably just throw those numbers on there lol
@@DerbyCityRC for sure! I was getting between 40 and 42 miles an hour on a lower end LIPO (pre warmed) so in line with that Hoovo! Great stuff again man!
Great truck! But that’s the first thing I thought when I seen that chassis 🤪 love the way you give these things hell!! Took a good many launches onto pavement IMO. Also think the colder weather made the plastic brittle!!🤙🏻💪🏻 Looks like a Win from here!!👍🏻😁
I have/love a 1:16 HBX that's been indestructible. Appreciate that this model is bigger. Most of the bargain brands seem stuck on 1:16/18. That said, still can't find this one in Canada. :(
Hey make sure you get rid of the lock washer on the wheels. It digs into the wheel making a week spot already broke two wheels and I'm nowhere near as hard on my stuff
This is ridiculously good, especially when you consider the price. Really good on a short course track, really tough at a skate park, really fast and super fun. Thank you! I wouldn't have ordered one had I not seen this video, and I'm really glad I did!
Just returned the H14BM and ordered one of these bad boys instead. It seems like a really well balanced build. (Minus the tiny battery compartment, but maybe they’ll release a chassis revision one day.) Can’t wait!
Agreed! I've had tons of bad luck with MJX for some reason. This seems to be a good bit better, especially for the 35$ off coupon. This is my next buy for sure.
I've had mine a few days and already bent a shock shaft lol. But that's what happens when I send it full speed into an angled curb to send it flying. I also can't complain, since I was able to get mine for 97 dollars after taxes and shippinf
No Amazon for you I assume? So far that’s the only place it’s available unfortunately. Check out my video on the hbx 2996a. It’s the red one I show in here and I linked that on Banggood.
I would love for them to come out with a 1/10 version! The Flyhal fc610 and the 2996a aren’t really 1/10 but for some reason claim they are. This one is sized correctly
Mass increases with size at a rate of 4 to 1, and 10th scale is a lot larger than 12th scale. So, more R&D is needed to make a larger RC, and most 10th scale so not come with their own battery (aside from Rlaarlo's pseudo 10th scale) because the batteries must be suitably thicc in order to run a 10th scale. Hobbywing 10th scale systems need a minimum of 5000 mAh battery to run safely, otherwise the strain the 10th scale system puts on the smaller capacity batteries will cause them to catastrophically voltage-sag. I tried to run a 2000 mAh on my 8th scale and the amp draw was so high that the battery went down to 2.3 volts per cell. What does that mean? Most hobby grade chargers won't charge a battery if you have cells below 2.5-2.7 volts. So, it killed the battery because the battery didn't provide enough amps. 10th scale is a whole different beast for these reasons and it's why Rlaarlo has been almost the only company to release a budget 10th scale.
That was a tough test. Off the jump there was some big air. Landing on the street in colder weather will break a lot of cars. Under normal conditions I think this a very good car. I really enjoyed the video.
You can replace a chassis! Here is one on nearly this same model car from quite a while ago: ua-cam.com/video/tr1wNOoHsFI/v-deo.htmlsi=p6yHofrw1SOM_ldP
Not that I know of lol. Actually I’m usually only out when it’s dry lol Definitely a few wet occasions and we get it more often in certain times of the year. Glad you like the vids!!
It’s not out of the question, but more than likely by the time I got around to making that video, mjx will have had about 7 new models to replace this one lol I definitely prefer the 2997a due to size, durability, and handling.
I saw this yesterday reviewed by someone else and I thought man where is derby city?!? And here you are. Season greetings and all the best for you and your family from nz. NICE as always 😁😎😁
lol yup I bought it as soon as I could and whipped this old video up as quick as I could lol. Love these trucks so was super excited about it!! Thanks, and you too my friend!!!
I love the stuff you put out and the way you are with your boys (family). This rc scene I’m becoming a part of is amazing lots of beautiful people. Keep it up my friend ❤️🤙
I’m going to try to remember to check tomorrow. Many people are asking if the 2997a body will fit the 2996a. I feel mine split because of the cold weather, and I did have hard crashes. Lol
Bought this my son for Christmas, even being 50 degrees out it overheats in like 10 minutes of use. Fan works and comes on as soon as you turn the power on if its hot or not. All this with the stock 2s battery, I've used the battery for three days in a row because it over heats and my son gets bored waiting for it to cool down. We just use it the next day and its still great for about 10 minutes and then stops working until it cools down. On about the third day we do get the chirping that the battery is dead. Just not sure why we need two or more batteries when you spend more time waiting for it to cool than we do using it. Not sure if it will even last 10 minutes in the summer since it gets so hot here in NC.
What seems to be excessively hot? The esc or the motor? That’s not right it should be able to last pretty much endlessly (within reason) in 50°. Also, it’s normal for the fan to be on all the time, that’s just how they work, even the high end stuff. Hbx is good with customer service so they should take care of it for you. Just make sure there is nothing binding the wheels making it hard for them to turn, it should roll relatively smoothly with a very slight “notchy” resistance from the motor. Hopefully this helps.
Your videos are amazing! You are super smart, very informative! I just barely found your channel, super awesome! Thank you for all the time and hard work you put into these videos! 👍
For the batteries I used here, yes. There are some out there that don’t require one, I just know these actually fit the car lol. I should have the batteries and the correct adapters in the video description.
Thank you! I am going to get this for a 9-year-old, a friend of mine's daughter's birthday present. I am going to order the 3S battery and the adapters but, I think I might put that away for a while until she gets a little better at driving it around. 😂 Thanks again for all your hard work and all these videos! I've been binge-watching them😂 clicking the 👍 as I go.
I do not wanted to watch your clips. Now I watched the second one. Nice work again. Like your style and seems like you are loving what you are doing. 👍
@@DerbyCityRCunfortunately the HBX is not available in Germany. After your clip I thought I need it for my boy to support my with me amewi short corse 1:10.
I would suggest T-Rex tape inside all your bodies. It helps absorb impacts on hard landing and keeps the bodies together practically forever! Good video. Decent little budget rc man.
How would you compare this to the MJX 14210? HBX seems to land on its feet and not flip over as much as MJX. Does it seem to handle better for beginners? Thanks
I like this one more. A bit bigger, and much more stable. I would also rate it as quite a bit more durable too. So yes much better at handling for beginners and non beginners.
Yup one of my favorite RCs for sure. Probably in my top 7 lol. I’ve also upgraded those things and hoping to get that video done soon lol. It’s almost completely recorded just need time to finish it between all my other videos lol
Nice mine is currently totaled. Broke to undercarriage in half and can't find a replacement :(. If you come across a replacement let me know@@DerbyCityRC
QUESTION about my 2997a , it seems to me that mine has migrated most of the drive to the front wheels. Is that a typical problem? I'm assuming something is wrong with the center diff? Any tips or ideas?
Hmmm. Try to explain the issue a bit better. When under load, the center diff will displace power to the least loaded wheels which is normal. Do all 4 spin nearly equally when you hold the car in the air and throttle it?
@@DerbyCityRC Okay... did a little more detail testing. When I bench test it wheels all spin evenly. When I run it down the road front wheels wildly burn out style until I reach a high speed but under accellaration the fronts seem to be driving much more power with low traction than the rears which are biting well.
@DOUGandNIKI did this change so be you’ve had it or has it always been this way?that is normal center diff characteristics. I would check the front and rear diffs for any gear and driveshaft and axle damage, and if nothing is found, remove the center diff and put thicker fluid in it. Like 100-500wt.
How does this with 2s compare to the 2995? Id think this is still a little faster, but the 2995 looks like its higher off the ground which would be better off road. Ive also been wondering how the larger tires you put on everything would perform with this.
Ya it’s quite a hot faster, especially being :s capable. I wanna say the 2995 got 17 mph when I speed tested that 2 years ago. This one does around 28 on 2s and 40 on 3s. Something like that anyway. I haven’t seen a stock 2995 in a while so I don’t recall if it sits up higher or not. It shouldn’t because it uses the same components and if anything, the 2997a has longer shocks, not shorter ones. I will be doing an upgrade video on it for sure!
Do you like this car better than the HAIBOXING 2995? I recently picked up the newest version of the 2995 (now comes with oil filled shocks). I plan on running the 2995 on 3s. Will this destroy the stock setup??? I love your reviews!
Oh man this is so much better than the x07. The x07 has low quality gears and they tend to fail pretty quick. Otherwise Hosims cars are pretty good but they just won’t fix their cheap metals.
Im def going to buy a HBX 2995 thanx to you bro. You provided everything I needed to know we have a very similar style in pretty much everything so good shit. Thanks
This truck was just on sale on Amazon for 159.99 so I bought one. I'm surprised at how much power it has for the price. 3S batteries on the way! My only complaint really is the tires seem like a weak point. Any suggestions on what I could put on it?
Yes! Great price! Don’t forget you do also need a charger for the 3s batteries. Could go with one like this if you don’t have one yet: amzn.to/4ggENgi Also, check out this video to see what this car can really do and also for a good tire suggestion (just need to tune the suspension a bit). ua-cam.com/video/ZqcwKgZbR6w/v-deo.htmlsi=CRdYpeC6nRfhp7uH
do you or anyone have videos, or where can I find Instructions on replacing the wheel mounts. specifically, wondering about how how to pull the bearings. or do I just toss em and buy new ones for new wheel mounts?
The bearings can usually be pushed out with a small screw driver from the opposite side of the bearing. Just push gently and go around as to not push on the same spot each time. By wheel mounts, I assume you mean the hubs, and the bearings where the axle rides in? Just called wheel bearings or hub bearings. I’ve got it shown briefly in a few videos but really can remember for sure which ones but just try pushing them out like I described. Hopefully that helps!
Hey I purchased this truck a couple weeks ago and I didn't try it out till now. I noticed that my speed control nob doesn't work how its supposed to. If I higher the speed the truck starts to accelerate by its self and if I lower it the car reverses by its self. Is that supposed to happen?
@DerbyCityRC Thank you so much! I'm so glad you were able to answer that for me. I greatly appreciate you! I love watching your videos your an awesome guy! Keep it up. 💯 Blessings to you and your family. 🫶
lol no it was like that before we moved in. It’s from the fact that’s it’s too tight if a turn for the garbage trucks and they run it over a lot lol I assume anyway. I imagine it’s the original curb from the late ‘60s when it was developed.
@@DerbyCityRC Just giving you a hard time, man. I'm not sure these little cars could cause that kind of damage to the curb. ;) You got me craving this truck as my next model. I have a 16890SA, 3100A, and a 903A but am really wishing I had bought the 2997 instead of the 903.
Have you adjusted the throttle trim knob? It’s the one on the right and it may be turned too far counter-clockwise. Give that a small and slow turn if not centered. Be careful it will cause the car to move on its own if you go too far.
I have one of these as well and I really like it too. Have you changed the diff fluid in yours and if so do you mind if I ask what weight of fluid you used and did you get any good results? I really like the videos, thanks for sharing the information with us.
I added diff fluid to the center diff in this video and it made a difference for sure. Check this out, it’s the same car with different tires and body (maybe shocks too). It was either 100k or 500k, I can’t remember which one I went with: ua-cam.com/video/as1Lp7Y3kxY/v-deo.htmlsi=J2oKw3womd1Zj83L
Very, very cool!! This with each video this RC keeps impressing me, cant beat the 1995 chassis and then improve it! Great video Even!! Congrats Max on the 13mph run!
Love everything about this car other then the the low profile inner rim! I feel like that’s gonna be a week point who know may hold up though! Great review/video keep it up!
This hbx 2997a vs the hjx h14bm? Trying to get back into the hobby, used to run traxxas stampede and arrma kraton 6s and nero big rock. Thanks for your input!
Can you move the ESC or do you think you can move the E?S c put on top of the servo so you have more room for a longer battery or do you think would be too much trouble
Ran it yesterday and did one of my favorite jumps to date! 😃 Next video is a redcat crawler(still a fun video 😄), but hopefully the one after will be this!
Ya unfortunately this is currently only on Amazon US. Here is a similar model on Banggood, the main difference being this one is only 2s capable and the body is different. www.banggood.com/custlink/mvKPdsoo6h I did a review on this one probably 8-10 months ago
Welcome! I like these quite a bit: amzn.to/4blGMwM And I like these too: amzn.to/3Wi0CF4 I’d also recommend these hex extenders (15mm) to reduce body rub and widen the stance to help make it a little less likely to tip over in the grass: amzn.to/3Wm0DI0 Also keep in mind bigger tires will put more strain on the motor and other components, but it does seem to handle to larger tires so far.
Thank you Derby City! OK Dr, one more for you. I've only used 2 or 3 batteries and the car is routinely unpairing from the remote and red and green lights flashing on the controller. Any thoughts for me? Appreciate anyone's insight for me. Brand new to rc here. Besides the depressing radio Shack car I got for christmas in 1993.
Nice! Was hoping to see this video! Great video as well, love the durability testing! Hey does that body fit on the 2996a at all? Wouldn’t mind that wing mounted as well!
Actually that’s one of the downfalls of this one. You can’t turn it down 😥 Check out my recent videos on the Rlaarlo Omni Terminator. Similar price point and can be turned down to a crawl if needed.
None of us on the street like it. Maybe one day w will tear it out lol. I’m lucky I don’t live in the next cul de sac over, it’s got a 2ft retaining wall right inside the curb lol
maan. ima go with cold weather plastics damage on the body and the chassis. i put the new ARRMA 4S center diff in a Typhon and it's almost stealth mode now it's so quiet.
Just scored one of these and it is so much fun! Broke a front axle on the first day and replaced it with the spare it came with. Where can I buy more? There doesn't seem to be a lot of parts available out there for the 2997a. Is there another car that is compatible? Thanks!
Dude! I broke another front axle! And I didn’t even crash it that hard this time. Do you think there might be a problem with the differential or something? It sheared off right at the diff, same as last time
Thanks! Next time, pull the pinion set screw out a little further and add a drop of BLUE loctite to the threads before you screw or back down and tighten it. Make sure the gear is set in the correct spot. amzn.to/4dhb99u
I've been wondering, how come you don't add gyros to your rc's? I've been thinking about trying it, 16889a pro (I own) and 2996/7a (I want) in particular. In videos I've seen, they almost seem like a must have item
Well most of those videos are reviews and a gyro would skew how the car is out of the box. But otherwise I guess I don’t really think about it. Lol I’ve got another speed video I’ll be working on soon and may try it with that one.
@DerbyCityRC I watch a lot of your videos, and you didn't strike me as someone who was against skewing the "out of box" experience...haha just joking, it's not something I ever thought about before either, but I might give it a try. Oh, for me in Canada the 2997a is around 300cad, and the 2996a is just over 200cad. Not sure why I'm having trouble deciding, I like them both. The 2996a make sense to you too?
Haha! Well as far as the car runs I like to show how it comes first lol atleast usually. Wow that’s a crazy difference in price. The 2996a is around $175 and the 2997a is $200. The 2996a is awesome, but if you want to run 3s just get a better esc for it. Otherwise they’re similar enough that it doesn’t justify almost $100 difference.
@DerbyCityRC yeah the $60 import and shipping fee Amazon is charging me is the killer. After all the coupons, allowances, shipping, etc., it's still $154 for the 2996a from banggood vs $229 for the 2997a from Amazon! Have a good day brother 🤙
Thanks for the review! I picked the truck along with the 3s batteries, it seems like it could use different tires. Do you have any recommendations for different tires and potentially larger tires?
I have these on my other cars with this chassis and like them alot. amzn.to/41uWIJz Possible you would need to trim the body so they don’t rub. I haven’t tried them in this car.
An affordable option would be this unit: amzn.to/3Bggzne Just remember not to leave a lipo charging without supervision and don’t let it overcharge. Unplug and store safely once it’s charged. Read up on some lipo safety if you’re unfamiliar.
Your content is awesome once again! The squiggly lines in your notebook are awesome sauce… kinda like the movie Idiocracy the map to the Time Machine.😂❤
Thanks! 😆 Man I own that movie in dvd and keep wanting to rewatch it one of these decades when I get time. It’s probably been 12 years since I’ve seen it. Awesome lol
Santa brought us the 2996a and happy to report, that they it now also has adjustable steering links! Wish they would also upgrade the esc, but I guess you can only have so much for the price. new esc + dumbo controller incoming soon. Not sure if its just a mistake in my piece, but the rear socks are emulsion type and front are diaphragm, which is strange
I’m not sure. I like the car the way it is really. Probably won’t, I’ll just keep the big wheels on the 2996a and the 2995 and keep this one atleast somewhat smaller. They should still fit with the 15-17mm spacers.
Sweet, I’m brand new to RC. Just bought my 5yr old daughter a 2995 for Christmas after watch your vids. We had so much fun playing with it that yesterday I order a 2997a, some 3s batteries and a imars d300😂. I’m wondering if those big wheels and tires would be a good idea on the stock 2995 to help her get more traction and ground clearance as we live on a farm, or would they be to much stress on stock motor? Thanks for the vidyas !
Love your vids! I've picked up a 16890SA for my son and a 2997A for myself! Do you know what kind of diffs those come with? Are they sealed and take diff fluid, or are they not sealed and take grease? Any difference between the 16890SA and 2997A in that regard (sealed vs. unsealed diffs)? Thanks!
They’re not really sealed, however if you put a thick enough fluid in, it would be a while before it leaked out. The diffs are very similar, but there are some differences from what I remember. But both are not fully sealed. Hope that helps!
@@DerbyCityRC Thank you for the response! If you have time, would you mind giving your recommendation for what you'd run in those two cars (16890SA front and rear... 2997A front, rear, and center)? We broke a front diff outdrive cup on the 16890SA, so I'll be in there shortly to replace that... Thanks for the advice and for the awesome content!
@atbear you’re welcome! I haven’t ever tuned a car that small (though I should), but I’d probably do something along the lines of 10k in the front and maybe 20k on the rear on the 16890. Then probably still 10k in the front, 30k rear, and 100k on the center. I do like 100k in the center diffs of these. That’s just where I’d start and hopefully like it lol Keep in mind the diffs may not hold the fluid too well but worth a shot 😃
@@DerbyCityRC Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for - just a place to start! Once I get a chance to try some things out, I'll let you know how it turns out.
I've been waiting to see this car reviewed the way I drive!- Thank you!! Today a light bulb went off - pool noodle somehow attached to the killer curb!? Definitely going to need a link to that band-aid- I've got lots of cars!😂 The Mad One - breaking speed ratings‼️👍👍🦾🦾🤘🤘
Man this was fun!! Pool noodle isn’t a bad idea lol. Even better would be to pour a bit of concrete to taper it into a ramp 🤣 Just need a day when all neighbors are gone lol That band aid was killer, and I think I’m gonna upgrade that scooter cuz there are bigger motors available lol
Ya this exact car is only on Amazon US. I’m surprised that’s still the case, but there is the hbx 2996a, which is almost the same minus the body, suspension tuning(easily adjusted to your liking), tires, and it’s not 3s capable (of course can be upgraded). I have a video on that one from maybe 6-8 months ago. Still a great car. There’s also the Rlaarlo Omni Terminator coming out soon, I’ll have a video on in the next week or so. It’s very similar also.
We would all like to see you review the brand new hyper go buggy. That one is the one that you push the ESC button five times and you get all but 50 mph. Review that one with the paddle tires on you'd be amazed how fast that thing is even with the paddle tires on. You viewed one that looks just like it but it would be nice for you to view the version too. I'll keep checking in to see if you're going to view that one or not I'll keep watching😊
I hear ya! However it’s SO similar to the one I have that I don’t think I’m going to. It’s literally a different front axle set and the esc ( also slightly different body color). I have around 7 other videos already in production and already don’t know how I’m going to get them all done 🤣 Super fun stuff in the works!!!
I can make my daughters 2995 lock up the wheels and stop on a dime. On the 2997a, when going forward when I try to stop it slowly comes to a stop, takes about 10 feet, won’t lock the tires up. Also the car is very slow in reverse. I took it apart and put 100k diff fluid In Center diff. I think it smoother now. With the center diff out, motor clicks really loud when I spin the pinion gear. Not sure if that’s normal. 🤷♂️
Double check the throttle trim knob on the right. It should be centered and it’s probably turned too far clockwise. The motor should make a noise and feel notchy. Too much would be a problem though so as long as it’s running smooth, it should be ok.
Did all that, I was concerned about the notchness of motor but I’m a noob so I don’t know what normal is. I’ve order a replacement but if it acts the same I’ll send it back and keep the dirty one. Should help having 2 side by side to compare. I love the vehicles though. We hooked. Santa brought the 2995 to my daughter, daddy had to much fun and got the 2997a, mommy got jealous and her 2995 will be here today. You got us hooked 😎
Hi, I watch your videos, I like them so much. I bought a car MJX 16208 YPER GO . I would like some advice from you, since you have so much experience with these machines. Differential oil which one do you put in it? 4.000 Do you only use differential grease?
I ordered one of these and it ran beautifully it was absolutely amazing! However I have one issue, after running, my heatsync fan broke. Anyone have a fan that would work in place for it ?
I haven’t tried any replacements yet. The main thing to do is to measure the width of the fan and the distance between two of the mount holes (straight across, not diagonal). Then you should be able to find one with the same measurements.
@aliyalcin19835 I’m glad you brought that up, you would actually need the 2997a transmitter anyway if you put that esc on. The 2997a transmitter is not a 2 in 1.
@@DerbyCityRC can u pleas help. My front dogbones of hbx 16889a pro is brocken by 3s driv. Witch dogbones are better the hbx or the mjx hyper go 1/16. Mjx dognones are ticker.
I just subbed to your channel I watched 5 videos on your channel. I love your content! I have been thinking of trying this hobby for a while what car do you recommend under 200 dollars? I am fairly mechanically minded individual so any tips is appreciated! I was also hoping find something that takes fairly standard battery's
Thanks!!! 😊 my latest video is most of my favorite cars under $250. Have you seen that one yet? The mjx 10208 is very good and takes a standard size battery. Same with the Omni terminator. They’re all good!!! 😂 The way that video is set up is to help you narrow down which cars interest you and then I’ve got the full videos of each car listed in that videos’s description. Hope this helps!!!
Hi Evan Question about alignment and steering trim- struggling to get this car to drive on straight line. I tried tweaking the steering trim but every time I adjust it over corrects in the opposite direction
Hmmm. This could be caused by one wheel not spinning as freely as the others. Do they all spin freely by hand? Was it like this fresh out of the box? Another thing can be that an axle pin between the dogbone and the wheel cup is broken or missing causing that wheel not to drive. Make sure each axle spins with the corresponding wheel too.
Also check for slightly seized steering linkage and anything else that pivots with the steering. If something is slightly bound up it can cause this too.
Dang 😢 Does it break around the front hinge pins? For me it always starts with the front bumper breaking first. I’m working on a way to strengthen the front bumper/hinge pins. I don’t know of any upgrades for this car yet.
I enjoy your reviews. You’re def a lot more of a long format where I tend to keep things short and sweet. On to the RC: I really enjoy the 2997A. I def haven’t driven mine as hard as you 😂 I drive mine on a dirt track, so it’s not as abusive as an environment! Anyway, keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing you repair that bad boy and get more time bashing!! 🤘🏻🏁
Would you buy this 2997a over the Deerc tachyon? They are the same price right now and trying to figure out which one I should get for my boy’s Christmas present?
Oh yes for sure. This one blows the tachyon out of the water. I like the tachyon, but this has the center diff, higher quality build, and more speed. amzn.to/46vU9rt
Yes I believe it is a much better choice. I’ve got other cars with the same chassis as the tachyon and other cars with the same chassis as the 2997a. Had both for over 2 years and definitely prefer this 2997 platform.
Thanks! I hear ya. Sometimes they are, but so far I’ve had no issues with HBX. They’re all at Haiboxing-hobby.com. What brands have you had issues with?
Hey bro would you still choose this over that new ralarrlo? That new "1/10th" that everyone has reviewed as well as yourself. You're definitely the one guy who would be able to tell me what one is the better rc and what one you would choose? Thanks as always!
Hey man. So not long after my review of the Rlaarlo, I actually did a pretty thorough comparison between them. I’d check that out, but ultimately the Rlaarlo won. I’ll also be doing an upgrade video for each of them soon! You’re welcome!
@DerbyCityRC Sweet man. Wow I must've missed that one. I saw your rlarrlo review and catch most of your uploads. I'll go back and check and give it a watch! Thanks again
@therealmobius no it doesn’t defeat the purpose at all. Still fully functional just slightly limits it. Going too thick will limit it more until eventually yes. I kinda liked 100k, 500k would probably be decent too. 1M maybe too thick but it depends. Could be trial and error.
@@DerbyCityRC I have a bottle of 500K coming. I'll give it a shot. Would probably help if we could get a decent dry spell and actually get the tires to hook up. Thanks for putting up with my questions. Love your content!
Impressive review and run and bash with this Evan. I’m loving mine. Shattered by body too, but it was pretty cold out. I thought the thicker shell my hold up a bit better too. 😆 I also had a full speed head collision with a curb and it rolled out of it unscathed. Overall I really like it a lot. Power delivery is really linear and not too obnoxious. I like it! Going to try my hobby wing program card on it for shits and giggles, just curious. 😂 Any way, I was thrilled to see Mad Max race you with the q130, that thing surely will run toe to toe with the 2997! I also have that little DeeRc car the your minion came out with. Perfect car for him ! Great video brother! Tell Max to watch out for the scooter PD. There out you know! 😂🍻✌🏼
Thanks Robby! Yes I actually watched your whole video last night. Maybe I forgot to comment lol. It was definitely colder for you, but yes I figured the body would do better when I saw it was thicker. Oh well, I’ll reinforce the next one!! Yes I got some different tires and shocks on the q130 and it’s awesome. Trying to get that video done too!
Solid content as usual brother! Thanks for your passion, along with the time spent behind the scenes.
Dude, thats amazing!
Thank you so much! I’m glad I’m able to help people discover, and continue loving, this hobby!!
Wow dude good looking out !!
Props my guy
Dudes will see this and just say "Hell yeah"
How did you do that?
This is quickly becoming my favorite R/C channel 👍 Great content and comedy. You need a big channel logo on the wall at recording/work station.
Awesome thanks! I absolutely do need to do that. Just haven’t made enough time to think about how I want to do it. Lol
Here’s my video on that: ua-cam.com/video/1rPEqOk0n74/v-deo.htmlsi=kOy236j4MbNFa9Aq
I even just compared both cars in my most recent video.
Awesome man!! Really hope you like it!! Thanks! 😊
@@DerbyCityRC It was fun while it lasted lmao. Pretty sick for $180 but I don't recommend anyone take it to a skatepark.
Ouch! What broke? You can get replacement parts, but ya you have to expect breaks when you go to a skatepark or jumping concrete.
@ayitsyaboi sweet man!! Have fun racing!!
My man did 13 mph on a scooter. Killer job Max
As always, he’s a beast!
Eventually gonna put a faster motor on that thing 😃
@@DerbyCityRC
Now that's going to be interesting.
They’re available so why not 🤣
That was a great recommendation on the smaller hbx 16890SA and now I want this for easier steering but I still will always like ripping 3s on the sa . Seems like hbx is a good company . Everyone likes them in the comments and the products .
Bro, your videos are very good, all around, like editing/humor/informative and all. You are good homie.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!!
this is a bold statement. Your kid, kicking that battery box "ok see ya!" is a top 5 funniest moment on this channel. Dunno why,but I hit the freakin floor right then man lmao
What kid? He was the delivery dude! 🤣🤣
Haha, that’s awesome man that’s what we go for! 🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing 😃
@@DerbyCityRC They got them labor laws in murica. freakin fascists.
🤣 Unbelievable!! Kids should have all the responsibilities!
Ya I have big tires on my 2995 with a Hobbywing combo and on my 2996a so I’m sure I’ll have that shaft issue eventually.
Yes these drive so well!
@@galactivation9577mines just rounded too after really light use. The shorter rear shaft only goes into the umbrella pinion by 1mm on mine!!
Thanks Brian!!
Great truck! But that’s the first thing I thought when I seen that chassis 🤪 love the way you give these things hell!! Took a good many launches onto pavement IMO. Also think the colder weather made the plastic brittle!!🤙🏻💪🏻 Looks like a Win from here!!👍🏻😁
Thanks!
Yup no fault of the car here! Total beast and super fun!!
I have/love a 1:16 HBX that's been indestructible. Appreciate that this model is bigger. Most of the bargain brands seem stuck on 1:16/18. That said, still can't find this one in Canada. :(
Hopefully will be available there soon!
Seems we’re finally starting to get some bigger models on other brands 😃
Hey make sure you get rid of the lock washer on the wheels. It digs into the wheel making a week spot already broke two wheels and I'm nowhere near as hard on my stuff
Thanks for that info man. Makes sense I appreciate it 👍
This is ridiculously good, especially when you consider the price. Really good on a short course track, really tough at a skate park, really fast and super fun. Thank you! I wouldn't have ordered one had I not seen this video, and I'm really glad I did!
I completely agree man!! Glad you found this and got you one!! 😃
Hi Evan.., question../ which car handles better… this one or HYPER GO H14BM 1/14 Brushless RC ? To see a comparative video of the two
This 2997a handles much better.
This would be one of my favorite cars under $300 and it’s way under that!
This 2997a handles much better.
This would be one of my favorite cars under $300 and it’s way under that!
Just returned the H14BM and ordered one of these bad boys instead. It seems like a really well balanced build. (Minus the tiny battery compartment, but maybe they’ll release a chassis revision one day.) Can’t wait!
Better choice in my opinion so that’s awesome! I know you’ll enjoy it!!
Agreed! I've had tons of bad luck with MJX for some reason. This seems to be a good bit better, especially for the 35$ off coupon. This is my next buy for sure.
H14BM is almost half the price of this one so is it a fair comparison?
@vendettasnares really? For me an H14BM shows up as $180 with a coupon and this shows $160. Where are you finding H14s for $80? Sounds great!
@@DerbyCityRC I just posted the same but I think UA-cam tossed it to the curb because I actually included the amazon links. 😆
Great video as always! Your enthusiasm and thoroughness got me into the hobby, and I'm loving it! Much love from upstate NY!
Man I appreciate that!! Glad you’re enjoying it!!!
Your awesome! Like watching mini movies. You got the right stuff my brother.God bless you and your family.
Thanks so much dude!!
Another great one. Maybe I've said it before, but you are my favorite UA-cam channel. Great creative work as always.
Dude I so appreciate that, really!!
Definitely looks like a sweet RC. Like you said, cold weather is not good for plastic. You Definitely gave it a beating.
I've had mine a few days and already bent a shock shaft lol. But that's what happens when I send it full speed into an angled curb to send it flying.
I also can't complain, since I was able to get mine for 97 dollars after taxes and shippinf
Where did u buy it? I can't find anything here in Germany even banggood
No Amazon for you I assume?
So far that’s the only place it’s available unfortunately. Check out my video on the hbx 2996a. It’s the red one I show in here and I linked that on Banggood.
@@ckochi I got mine on Amazon, but I'm in the US. The price was just low due to a coupon code I was able to get my hands on
lol ya these things can definitely take a good impact. Things will happen though! Super sweet deal!!
The truck looks cool. But why not 1:10?
Yes 100% agree. This took the abuse much better than almost anything would have. Extremely solid car!
Thanks!
Just wondering if you can fix a car that has a broken chassis or is it just used for spare parts? Have you ever posted a video of a chassis repair?
You can replace a chassis!
Here is one on nearly this same model car from quite a while ago: ua-cam.com/video/tr1wNOoHsFI/v-deo.htmlsi=p6yHofrw1SOM_ldP
Wow, so interesting, thank you
Does it rain where you live more than anywhere else? Love the sliding and fun on the wet ground but it's always raing... (new fan)
Not that I know of lol. Actually I’m usually only out when it’s dry lol
Definitely a few wet occasions and we get it more often in certain times of the year.
Glad you like the vids!!
Is there any chance to see hyper go 14210 v2 vs hbx 2997a comparison? Or there is no point because hbx 2997a is 1/12 but hyper go 14210 v2 is 1/14?
It’s not out of the question, but more than likely by the time I got around to making that video, mjx will have had about 7 new models to replace this one lol
I definitely prefer the 2997a due to size, durability, and handling.
I saw this yesterday reviewed by someone else and I thought man where is derby city?!? And here you are. Season greetings and all the best for you and your family from nz. NICE as always 😁😎😁
lol yup I bought it as soon as I could and whipped this old video up as quick as I could lol.

I love the stuff you put out and the way you are with your boys (family). This rc scene I’m becoming a part of is amazing lots of beautiful people. Keep it up my friend ❤️🤙
We need to see it!!! Thx for the sacrifice of ur cars.
You’re welcome!! 😃
Does the 2996a body fit without any modifications? I love the 2997a, but the body is so fragile. It already has splits in it without any hard crashes.
I’m going to try to remember to check tomorrow. Many people are asking if the 2997a body will fit the 2996a. I feel mine split because of the cold weather, and I did have hard crashes. Lol
One of my tire rods broke off on mine😭😭 you have any tips on how to fix it? I’m fairly new to the whole RC scene. Appreciate it🙏
Have you found the replacement part? Swapping is just a screwdriver in most cases 😊
Do you need an adapter for the 3S battery?
Thanks man I really appreciate that!
Thanks again for all your hard work and all these videos!

Awesome video brother. happy to see ya'll still running the Q130 s/ Rapid truck. I love my rapid, Upgraded the shocks, tires and batteries.

Should be on Suchiyu.com!!!
Let me know if you find it!
Are you using a different charger for the 3s batteries??
@@DerbyCityRC Awesome...thanks!
@DOUGandNIKI you’re welcome!!
I love this car I’m trying to decide if I should get this or the x07
Oh man this is so much better than the x07. The x07 has low quality gears and they tend to fail pretty quick. Otherwise Hosims cars are pretty good but they just won’t fix their cheap metals.
Ok thanks you but now I’m deciding if I should get this or the hbx 16890sa lol also thanks for the feedback
You just saved me from a whole lot of frustration and wasting money! I’m definitely going to get this one and set it up to be more beefier!
Glad I could help dude! What did you almost waste money on?
I have a recent video of upgrades on this too!
Could go with one like this if you don’t have one yet: amzn.to/4ggENgi
Also, check out this video to see what this car can really do and also for a good tire suggestion (just need to tune the suspension a bit). ua-cam.com/video/ZqcwKgZbR6w/v-deo.htmlsi=CRdYpeC6nRfhp7uH
do you or anyone have videos, or where can I find Instructions on replacing the wheel mounts. specifically, wondering about how how to pull the bearings. or do I just toss em and buy new ones for new wheel mounts?
Yes that’s actually normal for the newer hbx models. It’s no longer a speed knob, it’s throttle trim. You actually want to keep it in the middle.
@DerbyCityRC Thank you so much! I'm so glad you were able to answer that for me. I greatly appreciate you! I love watching your videos your an awesome guy! Keep it up. 💯 Blessings to you and your family. 🫶
@alejandrobarajas8354 thanks so much man!
Is that curb all busted up from you hitting it with your rigs? Ive seen you smack it so many times. XD
lol no it was like that before we moved in.
I have this RC car, but I noticed when going forward and trying to brake, the car takes longer to stop. Is this normal and can you adjust it?

This hbx 2997a vs the hjx h14bm? Trying to get back into the hobby, used to run traxxas stampede and arrma kraton 6s and nero big rock. Thanks for your input!
This one 💯
The h14 is good, but the 2997a beats it by a long shot in my opinion 👍👍
Can you move the ESC or do you think you can move the E?S c put on top of the servo so you have more room for a longer battery or do you think would be too much trouble
You definitely can do that. I’m actually working on an upgrade video for this car now and I’ll be doing that. 👍
Looking forward to that video 😊

Ya unfortunately this is currently only on Amazon US. Here is a similar model on Banggood, the main difference being this one is only 2s capable and the body is different. www.banggood.com/custlink/mvKPdsoo6h
I did a review on this one probably 8-10 months ago
Brand new to RC here. Wondering if I could put some 1/10 scale wheels/tires on this so it runs better in grass?
Welcome!
I like these quite a bit: amzn.to/4blGMwM
And I like these too: amzn.to/3Wi0CF4
I’d also recommend these hex extenders (15mm) to reduce body rub and widen the stance to help make it a little less likely to tip over in the grass: amzn.to/3Wm0DI0
Also keep in mind bigger tires will put more strain on the motor and other components, but it does seem to handle to larger tires so far.
@kurtharjo hmmmm. Nothing that should be causing that besides being o ur of range and bad transmitter batteries. Have you tried to reach out to hbx?
@DerbyCityRC ok I'll try transmitter batteries.
And then reaching our to hbx next
Nice! Was hoping to see this video! Great video as well, love the durability testing! Hey does that body fit on the 2996a at all? Wouldn’t mind that wing mounted as well!
Thanks!! I keep meaning to check. I really think it will, but I’ll try to see for sure tomorrow. 👍
Hi, what's the lowest setting on the RC for Speed? id like to share it with my son, he will need a significantly slower machine than me...
Actually that’s one of the downfalls of this one. You can’t turn it down 😥
Check out my recent videos on the Rlaarlo Omni Terminator. Similar price point and can be turned down to a crawl if needed.
Question, do you if the wheels & tires are the same size as a 2.2/3.0 sct wheel/ tire?
The tires are closer to 3.75” in diameter, and I want to say they’re about 1.75” wide.
I'm lucky. The cul-de-sac I live on doesn't have a tree at the end. That curb around it would claim all my cars. Great video as always.
Thanks!
Glad you like it, but also surprised you broke an axle. (Bad crash? Lol)
Haiboxing-hobby.com has all the parts!
Dude! I broke another front axle!
And I didn’t even crash it that hard this time. Do you think there might be a problem with the differential or something? It sheared off right at the diff, same as last time
Love the vid! I bought this car and the pinion gear keeps coming off everytime i run it do you have any tips on how to fix it?
Thanks! Next time, pull the pinion set screw out a little further and add a drop of BLUE loctite to the threads before you screw or back down and tighten it. Make sure the gear is set in the correct spot.

$229 isn’t too bad atleast, but ya man thanks and you too!!
Are the shells compatible
Thanks for the review! I picked the truck along with the 3s batteries, it seems like it could use different tires. Do you have any recommendations for different tires and potentially larger tires?
I have these on my other cars with this chassis and like them alot. amzn.to/41uWIJz
Possible you would need to trim the body so they don’t rub. I haven’t tried them in this car.
You also need these hex extensions
amzn.to/3RRHOtD
Odd question, do you think the 2996a body will fit on the 2997a? I like the look of the 6 more.
It does buy you just need to rotate one of the body post mount assemblies. Very easy!
@@DerbyCityRC thank you, sir!
You’re welcome!
Can that motor get burned out ?? That motor look like it should have came with a fan or maybe can u install a fan to it ???
The motor does great, but yes you could install a fan if you needed it.
How do I charge the 3s battery because it doesn’t fit the original battery charger?
An affordable option would be this unit: amzn.to/3Bggzne
Just remember not to leave a lipo charging without supervision and don’t let it overcharge. Unplug and store safely once it’s charged. Read up on some lipo safety if you’re unfamiliar.
Awesome review again! Is this the same motor as the 2996a? (could be a cheap esc upgrade to run it on 3s)
Thanks!
Good point, yes I do believe it’s the same motor. Very similar if not!
That is interesting!!
Thanks for that update (3 months ago 🤣)
Do you plan on upgrading to the same big tires that you put on the 2995? Will they fit the 2997a with the same spacers?
@atbear you’re welcome!
I haven’t ever tuned a car that small (though I should), but I’d probably do something along the lines of 10k in the front and maybe 20k on the rear on the 16890. Then probably still 10k in the front, 30k rear, and 100k on the center. I do like 100k in the center diffs of these.
That’s just where I’d start and hopefully like it lol
Keep in mind the diffs may not hold the fluid too well but worth a shot 😃
@@DerbyCityRC Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for - just a place to start! Once I get a chance to try some things out, I'll let you know how it turns out.
Awesome, looking forward to the info.
Thanks!!
I've been waiting to see this car reviewed the way I drive!- Thank you!! Today a light bulb went off - pool noodle somehow attached to the killer curb!? Definitely going to need a link to that band-aid- I've got lots of cars!😂
The Mad One - breaking speed ratings‼️👍👍🦾🦾🤘🤘
Man this was fun!! Pool noodle isn’t a bad idea lol. Even better would be to pour a bit of concrete to taper it into a ramp 🤣
Just need a day when all neighbors are gone lol
That band aid was killer, and I think I’m gonna upgrade that scooter cuz there are bigger motors available lol
@DerbyCityRC I know a concrete guy!🙈 can't wait to see that scooter upgrade‼️👍👍🦾🦾🤘🤘
do you know where we can buy some spare tires for this HBX 2997a?
Sorry I missed this. Some are on Amazon, the rest are at Haiboxing-hobby.com 👍
Does it have a speed knob that you can slow it down for little kids?
Unfortunately it doesn’t. That’s been a common complaint as it’s one of the first hbx models to not have a speed adjustment.
which 3s battery's fit in this? share a link? which esc upgrade?
I showed it and it’s linked in the description 😃
Great video!👍 What size and brand of paddle tires would you recommend for the 2997a?
Thanks!!
I haven’t tried any yet but I would keep it close to the same size as stock. They’re probably around 100mm in diameter but that’s a guess.
Thanks for another awesome video. They now have become part of my Sunday morning routine...drink coffee & watch video.
Thanks man!! I shoot for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday at 11:00, but usually ends up being Sunday or Monday lol
Dude I can’t find this car. I’m in the uk and usually go to AliExpress but no joy. Has it been upgraded or come under another name?
I have around 7 other videos already in production and already don’t know how I’m going to get them all done 🤣
Super fun stuff in the works!!!
What part number is that new buggy you speak of?
I bought a car
MJX 16208 YPER GO . I would like some advice from you, since you have so much experience with these machines.
Differential oil which one do you put in it?
4.000
Do you only use differential grease?
Thanks!!
I rarely ever add diff fluid. If I did to these, I’d probably start with maybe 20,000wt and see how it did.
@@DerbyCityRC okay Thank you
Will the body of the HBX 903A (grey/white geometric one) fit this?
I don’t have that body so hard to say but most likely could make it work.
@@DerbyCityRC Thanks for the tip I've got on on order! I'll update if anything happens
You’re welcome!!!
Can we put the esc of the 2997a in the 2996a ? To drive 3s.
Sure can!
But if you’re buying an esc anyway, I’d get a slightly better one, like a 60 amp Hobbywing
@@DerbyCityRC but than i need a New Reciver...
@aliyalcin19835 I’m glad you brought that up, you would actually need the 2997a transmitter anyway if you put that esc on. The 2997a transmitter is not a 2 in 1.
The transmitters are actually different though at first glance they look the same.
Hi Evan
Question about alignment and steering trim- struggling to get this car to drive on straight line.
@@DerbyCityRC ok thanks Evan so this is not typical right? It should drive on straight line no problem!)
@mikerogers1949 you’re welcome. Yes mine drives straight. Definitely something not exactly right.
What other chassis do you recommend because I broke mine twice thank you I appreciate it
Dang 😢
Does it break around the front hinge pins? For me it always starts with the front bumper breaking first. I’m working on a way to strengthen the front bumper/hinge pins. I don’t know of any upgrades for this car yet.
It broke just passed the hitch pins on the front of the chassis I couldn't believe it
Def seems like a great truck, problem up north is always parts. Might have to look into one and always repair your divots people.
I already have the Tachyon for him but I can return it if you think the 2997A is that much better. Thanks for all the awesome videos.
@@DerbyCityRC thanks man!
Yes I believe it is a much better choice. I’ve got other cars with the same chassis as the tachyon and other cars with the same chassis as the 2997a. Had both for over 2 years and definitely prefer this 2997 platform.
Love your vids. Always worry about getting parts for these el'cheapo RC brands. My past experiences haven't been great.
Thanks!
I hear ya. Sometimes they are, but so far I’ve had no issues with HBX. They’re all at Haiboxing-hobby.com.
What brands have you had issues with?
Did you think the steering was a bit weak and or slow?
I don’t remember for sure, but probably. Very few cars have incredible steering right out of the box. Steers better than my Arrmas though. Lol
@cwatson42785 you’re welcome!!
Hope that helps!
Dude, you’re such an awesome dad!
If no one told you that today I just wanted to tell you that
Thanks man, I really appreciate that!! 😊
Between the 2997A and the AM-D12, which one would you pick?
I do like the AM-D12, but I’d go for this one for sure! I do believe it’s more durable, almost as fast, and easier to control.
@@DerbyCityRC ahh very cool.. thanks
Do you think 500k or 1m wt fluid in the center diff would get it to wheelie a bit?
500k should do it. Even 100k got my 2996a to wheelie
@@DerbyCityRC Does that defeat the purpose of the center diff? Trying to decide if I should go for it or not. Thanks!
I also had a full speed head collision with a curb and it rolled out of it unscathed. Overall I really like it a lot. Power delivery is really linear and not too obnoxious. I like it! Going to try my hobby wing program card on it for shits and giggles, just curious. 😂
Any way, I was thrilled to see Mad Max race you with the q130, that thing surely will run toe to toe with the 2997!
