- Bruce Springsteen performing "Thundercrack" Live at the Ahmanson Theater, Los Angeles, 1973

This time she'll tell me how she really feels
Bring me down to her lightning shack

I became a believer after the first two albums. I could not convince my buddies about Bruce Springsteen. They assumed he was part of the punk rock wave that was big at the time, especially in the UK. The E Street Band finally played at the local college and I had to buy all the tickets to get my friends to go with me. Bruce played for 4 hours and 12 minutes, with one break and three encores. Everyone that left that show was buzzing and singing his tunes, including my buddies. One of the best days of my life. That's the effect he had on music lovers.
I hope this guy makes it big. He has a lot of potential 😀
Eeuh i can say for sure he did as he is now in his 70's and called the boss by othets, but the boss is not the right name for him, but he is one that i will always remember
LOLOTF
I think he'll do well for himself. Just a hunch.
Bruce can shred the guitar when he feels like it
@@danielmelvin2406 he's one of those silent killers on guitar. You don't even realize how good he is until you stop and watch long enough. Took me years of disbelieving a guy like Prince was a great guitar player until I actually paid attention. Bruce is just like that.
This is my favorite version of this song. I wish that I could have it in my Itunes library.
The joy of discovering Bruce’s early days in music!
To think for years all I had was his cassette “Greetings from Asbury Park” with a couple favorite songs. Then I discovered these videos from his early days. Wow!!!
IKR!
This and Wild Billy's Circus Story from the same concert may be my new favorite Springteen performances
I wish there were more videos
I started seeing him soon after this show. Nothing will ever compare to 1978 tour sorry all the asbury park show fans - I feel so lucky to have 47 years of this man and band in my life
Great, now I'm on a Bruce binge again. This triggered it.
No worries, I've been on a Bruce Binge for the last 47 years!
@@anthonyflynn9953 Another one here
Same here ;-) Lockdown in South Africa
Yup, fell off the wagon... again.
Best kind of binge, enjoy
I love Springsteens first two albums , the way the songs go on and twist around and have so many turns
yes!
the 7th day was born Bruce Springsteen, to relieve our ills! Thank you for this long road by our side
What a different track they may have taken
These guys were an 11 right out of the box
I love Max Weinberg. I really do. But there is something so jazzy and good about Mad Dog that I miss from the first two albums sometimes. Don’t get me wrong. Max is the heartbeat of the e street band. But I think both drummers deserve great respect.
👍
The best drummer Bruce ever had.
Whilst I consider the Suki Lahav period of shows the band’s finest and Max was drumming then I too miss the vibe they had with Mad Dog out back. So great to have this performance to look back on. Why oh why does it fade out though??!!
He has more swing than Max.
So 100% right…..but when I hear people talk about “one hit wonders “ Mad Dog is a legend….but I always think of Boom Carter. I love so many Bruce songs, but BTR is in practically every greatest ever list…..imagine that you played on one song, and its the greatest rock and roll song ever recorded…..
Long time Bruce fan, keep coming back to this - it’s love, joy, a band hitting on all cylinders, and still life affirming
Bruce sure learned how to make that guitar talk
I can't explain how much I love this man.
He's married.
me neither. I wish I could have seen him back in those early days
OUR BOSS ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
@@prayingmantis6777 no prob ,she s not jealous🤣
Clarence was such a talent. Imagine the unshakable faith in Bruce he must of had to say to himself let me stick with this guy! Clarence would of been a giant success no matter where he went but he chose Bruce and it must of been a HELL OF A JOURNEY and a lot of FUN!!
Little did we know back in the day! Just a taste of things to come for many years, thank goodness - lovely to see Clarence 'Big man'
What a great era the early '70s were! Bruce, Elton, Bowie, Van, Joni, JT, Rundgren, Bette....so many future greats just breaking out.
Sooo lucky
Man, imagine hearing this live for the first time in '73. Would have been fucking awesome
Superb, clean and fresh . Whilst not yet a global megastar, the tight writing, playing and band bouncing off each other is immense
We Miss You Clarence Clemmons! RIP!
For these videos to even exist means people were aware.
Man, they were great, right from the very beginning. Can't imagine life without all the fabulous music they've brought to us since...
Bruce and the whole band are just awesome so lucky to have this footage of almost 50 yrs ago truly incredible love it a producer or rock magazine guy I can't remember the story but about this time in Bruce's career he went back and told everyone he just seen the future of rock n roll I think he was spot on
Agree 10000000%. Or, at least, can’t imagine MY life without him/them. Genuinely the soundtrack to my life
Spectacular:) love the vibe. Have a great weekend boss fans
Who's in the band I know Clarence, but I don't recognize anybody else
@@rodneypratt4324, Bruce, Clarence, Danny Federici on organ, Vini Lopez on drums, Garry Tallent on bass guitar and David Sancious on piano.
Spectacular is the word.
I think few realize how good of a guitar player he really is!
@@BrianCarnevaleB26 I am also a Carnevale! where you from? NJ here.
When Bruce emerged onto the scene in the early 70s the critics went crazy hyping him up. It was his live performances they were basing their excitement on. Here's why.
As great as this version is, there's one from '74 that blows this one away. Davey is on piano on that one and they really go for broke on it. It's way faster than this version as well.
if you can find it on youtube please post link, i wanna hear it
😊
Wow 1973. He hadn't written his monster hits yet... but you definitely can see the talent percolating to the surface.. i wonder if Thunder Road was written on some piece of paper somewhere.. or Born to Run.. gotta get a time machine..
Save me a seat! I would like to see the boss in these earley days..
10th Ave Freeze out? " ...when the big man joined the band..."!
Take me back ,leave me there in the 70s I'll be fine !
I encourage you to watch the Making of Born to Run DVD. Back in those days Bruce was constantly rewriting his lyrics in his distinctive longhand on a legal pad. Always pushing the envelope, tweaking, never satisfied. That's what makes him so great.
I always felt that those who think that Born in the USA is Bruce’s best stuff should be smacked in the head with this song.
It’s great to see footage of the Boss when he was raw and hungry! You can feel the vibe of upcoming success and glory.
He was just a "kid" at 24 back then. A musical genius..
He was also 24.
At 24, Bob Dylan had written Blowin' in the Wind, The Times They Are a-Changing, Mr. Tambourine Man, The Gates of Eden, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Like a Rolling Stone. I Want You, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, and changed the course of modern music forever. Springsteen is pretty good, but let's reserve the word "genius" for those who truly are.
@@hankgarfield4692 yeah, except when I listen to a Dylan song I want to jump off a bridge, they’re such downers. And aside from Tambourine man, Rolling Stone, and Blowin in the Wind, those others songs suck. I’ll put Jungleland, Thunder Road, BTR, NYC Serenade, Rosie, Incident on 57th St, Sprit in the Night, Prove it all Night, Racing in the Street, the River, Kitty’s Back, Promised Land, Because the Night and a bunch of others above every one you listed. Dylan is the one that everyone thinks we’re supposed to worship, but is totally the emperor’s new clothes of musicians. Have NEVER met someone who actually loves his work ,we’re just all supposed to like him, never understood why, except the critics said so.
@@hankgarfield4692 At 27 Bruce had written Born to Run, one of the best albums in the history.
Big wall of unique sound. Great players. Maybe one of the best live bands ever. His earliest work is his best. His guitar playing is under rated. His work ethic is second to none and his bands are always tight. A genius and great performer. Love these peeks into his early performances. This is the Bruce that grabbed me in the 1970s. His best music was in the 1970s for sure.
The usual energy we saw and see in his concerts in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s... amazing! Bruuuuce! Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil!
Wow such a great video of Bruce and the boys very early on! The boss is fun, funky (yes FUNKY!) and oh so young! I love his guitar playing but also check out Gary T’s awesome bass line and Mad Dog’s out of control drums! And Big Man is having a great time! Showing his Van Morrison/James Brown/Guitar god sides here Bruce just had everything! He could take it from 0 to 90 in a single beat - what a showman!
Video? it could even be film 1973 anyway this was a big time video commercial production with multiple cameras someone wanted him on tape
Springsteen in Van Morrison mode was always my favorite version of Springsteen (and the E Street Band), especially live.
Will yah just get a look at them, all up there So Young and soooooooo! dam Pretty, with the world in front of them. They were Spectacular then and they are still Spectacularly Brilliant today. Love them.🎼♥️🇦🇺♥️🇺🇸
Absolutely.... great song as well... love Springsteen!!

This is one of my favorite videos of early performances. Talk about making that guitar talk! Fantastic!
It's like listening to Bruce's heart speaking through his guitar
This is extraordinary. This is full of that exuberance that drives his first two albums in particular. They are just so musical.
Bruce’s guitar tone is way on point too. Great great tone from that Tele that night. Timeless. Kind of reminds me a bit of Robbie Robertson’s best Tele playing- the song comes first, great band that knows how to play together all day long, doesn’t feel
A need to take a long lead on every song but when he does- he sticks it. Bruce was a similar player at his best in the 70s.
The guitarwork on this song is some of his most underappreciated. The '78 tour seems to be seen as the gold standard for Bruce as a lead guitarist, but between this, Kitty's Back, and Backstreets, to name a few songs (plus the whole Steel Mill era), he was really lighting it up in the really early days too.
Can you recommend a few of the best 70's concerts from him to seek out? I'm not that familiar.
Magnus Lauglo don’t forget the amazing lead guitar intro to Prove It All Night. There’s several bootlegs and official recordings of it.
Magnus Lauglo that’s Vinny “Mad Dog” Lopez on drums so it’s way before 1978. Probably 1974 or ‘75. He was fired and replaced (for fighting with Clarence & other things) by 1975 when they were recording BTR. Initially with Ernest “Boom Boom” Carter. He’s the drummer on (the song) Born To Run. When Boom Boom left with E Street pianist David Sancious to form a band, Max Weinberg took over the best seat in the house at Springsteen concerts and Roy Bittan the piano stool.
@@Frip36 There are more expert advisors than me, but from the 1978 tour I can definitely recommend Aug in Cleveland (at the Agora), and December in SF (at Winterland).
I think live cuts (and possibly full shows) are here.
@@Frip36 Agora and Winterland are great suggestions. Others from 1978 are Capitol Theater (NJ) and Fox Theater (Atlanta). From 1975, the Hammersmith Odeon (London) show is amazing. There are also great recordings from the Roxy in LA (from both of those tours).
Bruce at his best - wish my time machine worked.

Love it when he sings the titular lyric and the crack of the snare immediately follows
46 years later and Bruce still lets it all hang out
“Empties the tank, EVERY time “
What a great song and a really excellent band. The magic is there between Bruce and Clarence.I love it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Funny I found this today. yesterday day I was driving my cassette only 1994 Astro van blasting some just found best of Springsteen tapes for a 2 hour road trip. at 66 years old the Boss has been a great traveling companion through my life. thank you bruce.

He has a great saxophonist so cant help but make it big time,,, dont let me forget Bruce is todays poet.
What a great singer and composer with a great musical repertoire, one delights with his songs, my respects for you
That’s awesome! Love Bruces guitar work here in 73, even now listening to Western Stars it’s the same raw meaty tele sound, real distinctive, He’s got Steve and Nils but I love it when he makes his guitar talk.
only 23 year old. unbelievable talent.
I watched this so many times that I could tell that by the end at 9:16 when he says "she's got the heart of a Ballerina" it's the same as the one in 2:27 but just from a different angle.
I love the opening shots of Bruce, Danny and C.
So young!...Bruce made his guitar talking!😍👏 Amazing!😍
I bought this bootleg album at the Capital Record Swap Meet in 1975 and couldn’t even believe how great this song was and how it never made it on a album. I only heard him play it once in concert. And I have seen him at least 30 times. Dance with me partner. ❤️
Ayyayyo if I am a ghost I wud have time traveled to witness this.. My whole nervous system is bobbling bobbling bobbling 😘😘😘
One of the best band performances I've seen.
So true. Truly shoes how their talents, individually and collectively, are off the charts
So adorable. Sending Love to you to the Springsteens. ✴✴✴✴✴ rest in peace, Clarence
I saw Bruce for the first time in 1978 at Olean NY. did not know this video existed. What an amazing talent and band. Thank you Bruce for all the incredible music and concerts through the years
Me too! At St. Bonaventure University
It was known early on there was something very special about this young man. The boy I was knew. And that fact carried me into adulthood and throughout maturity.
Every line of your comment was terribly cringe.
Early Bruce clip -fabulous
The thriving musician before becoming a performer. Love the pre B-USA days
I bought a bootleg called All those Years back in 1990 or so with this song on .. Always loved it

WISH so bad I could see Springsteen live!!
Bruce doing volume swells--very nice!
And Roy Buchanan styled pinch harmonics. The man knew how to make his guitar sing. His Tele tone here is wonderful. As well as his perfect timing and control of dynamics within the song. The band is on fire here. Young and hungry and so tight. Great video.
Early Bruce got the juice!

When all his songs were over 10 minutes long...so glad he learned to edit, haha. Love him forever.
I had a recording of this performance & "Pretty Flamingo" on a 5 record bootleg. It was a compilation from who knows how many bootlegs cuz in the mid/late 70s - early 80s there were a gajillion of them on vinyl. Anyway, this & Pretty Flamingo were the standouts & I'm thrilled not only to have a visual but a top-notch (comparatively) audio version. Finally. After 40 years. Thank you.
