    Ellie, you should definitely get your CNA license! I got mine my senior year of high school and it definitely helped me realize nursing was not for me. However after that experience, I still wanted to be a member of the medical field in the form of a doctor. The class typical costs around $600-$1000 depending on where you live and only takes a few months to complete. It also is very helpful in attaining patient contact hours. Good luck!

      @cierradawn490 7 років тому +3

      Lauren Joy yes this is also what I did. You can take the class when you are 16 (at least in KS) and then you can work in a hospital or nursing home. I have loved being employed as a CNA but it has definitely shown me the ends and outs of a career in nursing. Being a CNA has made me realize that my path in the healthcare field is medicine. I think it has also taught me how to better interact with patients.

    Anyone considering nursing should keep in mind that nurses tend to spend more time with patients than doctors do in a hospital setting (despite what Grey's Anatomy might depict haha) and that's a reason many people enter the nursing profession. Also, with nursing you're able to get your bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) in 4 years straight out of high school and work as a nurse while going to graduate school. Having said that, bedside nursing is not the only type of nursing! There are so many opportunities for growth in nursing such as becoming a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, ect. Bedside nurses carry out treatment plans that doctors order but not all orders come from doctors. Nurses with advanced degrees are able to write orders and prescribe medications! :)

      lol at the "work while in graduate school". Living the dream with that statement. I would caution any actual nurse that is contemplating graduate school and work at the same time. Being in NP school myself I will tell you that in order to take your education seriously you must devote your entire time. No different than PA, DPT, Pharmacy school. Please do not make it seem like it's such a walk in the park.

    • @xoluvmuzic4everox
      @xoluvmuzic4everox 7 років тому

      John A Somers By no means am I saying it's a walk in the park. My mother recently graduated NP school. She was a part time student while working full time as a bedside nurse. Some people need to support their family. Some people choose not to work as a bedside nurse at all and go straight to NP school. It really depends on the individual. All I'm saying is that there's the option available if someone would like to work bedside but would also like to move up the ladder. Thankfully there's part time and online graduate programs! I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your program!

    • @johnasomers448
      @johnasomers448 7 років тому +2

      Hats off to your mom. I will end my side of the discussion by saying this. The Np career path is a scary one. When I say that I imply that I do not feel the standards are high enough. So while I do understand each person's situation is different I still do not agree its right. Having been through most of the NP training I will tell anyone that it is defiantly not enough. Without seeking out the additional knowledge you are a scary provider. Not all schools are created equal either. So I get the need to make an income but I would argue that a part-time learner is a weaker provider. Put in the actual time. Look at all other doctorate degree medical programs and you'll notice they do not work any more than one 8 hour shift a week. Hmm, you really think nurses are exempt from this?

    • @xoluvmuzic4everox
      @xoluvmuzic4everox 7 років тому

      John A Somers I don't understand what you mean when you say "put in the actual time". As a part time student you're putting in the same amount of time as a full time student just at a slower pace. It's what the individual student makes of their education. There could be a full time student who studies the bare minimum just to pass and a part time student who seeks additional knowledge through work, research, and reading.

    I love that you explained the pressure that is specific to female medical students. You want to have a family and your family is harassing you to have a family (especially when you are a married med student). I want to hear more about residencies! Can you have guests on the show from a few different types of residencies? Like OB, Cardiologist, internal med, primary, surgical etc?

    this may be way too much to do BUT if possible could you maybe do a video of the different options after med school. like the different residencies. if you happen to know the fellowships per specialty that would also be great to know. i have been searching so hard for a list of all specialties and sub specialties but i can't find it!! thanks so much!! love your videos!!

  • @alark2213
    @alark2213 7 років тому

    I really liked the advice that you have in one of your previous videos about deciding what you actually want to be doing and then see which field that fits into. For example, you said you wanted to perform surgery on the eye and therefore your only option was med school. For me personally I decided that the flexibility of nursing really interested me. Being able to change a clinical area if you got board of one, the option of advanced practice, etc. Therefore I went with nursing, I earned my RN through an Associates of Applied Science in nursing, worked while I finished my Bachelor of Science in nursing and I am perusing Master of Science as a nurse practitioner. To help people in deciding I would also say to shadow different disciplines to see what they actually do because the media doesn't do a good job at portraying medicine or nursing. I can totally understand the uncertainty but getting a feel for the the difference between the different areas in healthcare will be very helpful in my opinion.

    I love watching your videos, you are so positive and inspiring! You mentioned in another video that your husband is a PA - my boyfriend (of 3 years) is currently in Nurse Practitioner school. I am a nurse, I've been working in a SICU for over a year and have been super restless wanting to go back to school. I work with lots of mid-level providers and physicians, so I understand the roles. I have also shadowed CRNAs several times. I just feel at a crossroads because in my heart, I want to pursue the journey to/of medical school (mainly because I am seriously considering a surgical specialty, and mid-levels have a different role in surgery), but I am terrified that I could lose my wonderful boyfriend because of this. We have always had so much time that we get to spend together because of our flexible RN schedules (a week off together is not totally uncommon in nurse world). So I am just worried that I could resent this career choice if I always have a disappointed/upset partner.
    SO, basically my question is.... how do you make it work with Kyle? Does he have a predictable schedule (M-F), or is his also all over the place like yours? Was he always supportive of you? My boyfriend is very receptive to me pursuing PA, NP, or CRNA school, but when it comes to MD he like no way! I understand that this journey does not come without consequence, and it is just as much a lifestyle change for him as it will be for me, how did you handle it all?!

    Ellie, if you want to spend more time with patients then that can decide what you do. If you want a hospital position, but want a lot of patient time I would be a nurse. But if you want a practice and less emergency career, with plenty of patient time I would be a doctor. You could become a nurse practitioner which is like the best of both worlds

    what time do you wake up, what time do you go and come from work? and at what time do you sleep

    • @AndreaTooleyMD
      @AndreaTooleyMD  7 років тому +15

      I generally wake up between 4 and 5 am (closer to 4 if I have lots to do, closer to 5 if I want to sleep lol!)
      I get home from work around 6:30 most nights, and I try to go to bed as close to 9 as possible- sometimes it's 8:30, sometimes 9:30 :-)

    I hope you can do a "day in the life" or weekend in the life" video. I know you probably can't film in your residency but would love to see you day/life.
    Question: Now that you've been matched and you still have 1 year left, does that affect your schedule for next year? will you have more free time or have better pick of your schedule since you don't have to travel for interviews?

    Hi! Just had a quick question for you. What is your take on medical mission trips/mission trips in general? I have heard from some people that it can be frowned upon by admissions because it is very short-termed. I have taken various mission trips in high school, and am debating taking one with a club at my university!

    Hey Andrea! I had a question about the Ophthalmology specialty, which I am a bit interested in (just graduated from undergrad and studying for the MCAT to apply next year). From all the research I found online, Ophthalmology is one of the "ROAD" specialties and one of the most competitive to get into. I read articles that say you can have normal work hours (9-5/6), almost similar to Dermatology, since there are usually no emergency call ins to the hospital. But then other forums mention that the lifestyle is not as smooth. Can you share your experience with seeing Ophthalmologists around you and what type of lifestyle this specialty has? Many thanks!

      Thank you! That is so nice! I don't feel like I am a makeup expert AT ALL, but I get requests to talk about makeup a lot lol!! I use a liquid foundation (either Estee Lauder double wear or Born This Way) and then use MAC studio fix powder on top. I use a MAC liquid concealer under my eyes. I use bronzer- either makeup forever or chanel and then the Nars orgasm blush. I put some of that on my eyelids too :-) Then I use a little eyeliner- I don't really like the liquid or the pencil I'm using currently... I switch those around. And finally mascara! I hate using mascara that's more than a few months old so I only buy the little tiny sample tubes lol. Right now I'm using makeup forever mascara. I set it all with the NYX setting spray. Hope that helps!!

      Andrea Tooley Im not the type to wear makeup. Could you possible give some insight on some of the unspoken expectations of being a woman doctor? Like I don't wear makeup but I'll probably feel pressured to wear it just because of the nature of the work.. or maybe that's just me?? I would love to hear your insight!
