Another funfact that many might or might not know: In order to make Merida hair behave as naturally as curls in real life would, the animators not only spent hundreds of hours studying hair in reality but also created a whole new programme on their own in order to be able to realistically have the curly hair in the movie
Omg I learned this in a video that talked about encantos hair animation saying that tangled and brave paved the way for different hair types(even though Rapunzel's hair was straight but they made the hair strands individual)

From what I remember was the hardest was trying to generate the multiple types of curls in her hair without it taking forever. It built off a system they made for tangled because they needed to generate large but still independently moving pieces of hair and were able to manipulate how ‘flowy’ or realistic it acted. And then they used the engine they made for Meridas hair to animate the amazing range of hair types in encanto

@@akabaneaki Yes and it's becoming more respected. It isn't a separate language, but a dialect. My mother is from a village near Elgin, where Kevin McKidd is from and I love it when she goes 'Full Lossiemouth'. I'm trying to learn more phrases but have trouble with the accent. Two of my favourites are 'peely-wally' which means unwell, and 'coorie doon' which is basically snuggling down.

I love Merida’s parents. They’re hardcore couple marriage goals. They love, respect & support each other. Also Merida’s planned marriage alludes to how Eleanor & Fergus kept peace years after invaders came & were defeated. Essentially this marriage was a promise of peace & to avoid another civil war amongst the tribes. Which is politically savvy & surprising to see in a children’s film. It’s a type of mature historical writing I think has been severely overlooked, especially by western culture.
It is brilliant. It absolutely was a marriage to bind two clans closer. And Eleanor never met Fergus until he was standing there reading to be bound to her as her husband. That could have been the exact opposite.
@@ladykoiwolfe Also like the arrangements between kingdoms for Helen of Troy’s hand in marriage (before it went south), the clans also must have had an agreement that whoever was the victor everyone would be agreed to accept the outcome, especially when everyone is promised a fair shot (pun intended). But of course, Merida wasn’t having it, so she really was putting her entire kingdom’s safety & future on the line, without realizing it.
@@musicallydisneyamvs6731 absolutely, she was a bit too hardheaded to see that at the moment though. I did love when she finally understood that running a kingdom wasn't all about the person's desires and was willing to accept marriage even if she didn't want it. But the Boys spoke up that they weren't ready either and it wasn't like any of them were asked. That made it go a lot easier since it was all the fathers children, not just one. I'm pretty sure that only those three are eligible when she is ready though.

I feel its important to mention that Brenda Chapman was the first person to make these characters and the beginning of the story, basing it off her own mother-daughter relationship. It's only when she was usurped FROM HER OWN creation that Mark Andrews came in and practically rewrote the entire story to be what it is now besides the very beginning where Merida and her mother feud and Merida defies her mother with archery. That's essentially where Brendas version ended. I'm honestly sorry that Brendas brain baby was stolen from her and she was kicked off the team of the movie she had come up with. She and her hard work don't deserve to be erased and I wish we could have gotten the story she had planned from the start

How Eleanor gave birth to triplets and survived is one of the few things that’s unrealistic in the movie, along with her and all three of triplets surviving infancy

It's literally an animated movie. You find the triplets unrealistic but don't mention the fact that they are turned into bears? Lol some people complain about anything 🤷♀️

They are royalty so wouldn't they have enough resources for the triplets to survive?
My fiancee told me after we had watched Brave that Fergus would have lost his right to be king after losing his leg to Mor'du due to the belief at the time that a king must have an intact body because of the connection between the king and the land.
So it was Elinors kingdom? Matriarch. That explains the focus on Merida and not the eldest of the triplet male inheritors
@@inquisitive- I always assumed elinor was the one with royal blood cause she wears a crown and is focusing on training merida to be proper whilst Fergus was more relaxed. If it was the other way around it wouldn't make sense for outsider Elinor to be the one focusing on royal rules and wearing a crown whilst the actual born royal doesn't care that much

Oh, and as French Stewart told Actress Sara rue as her tv show persona Claudia (Claude) Kacey in the tv series, Less than Perfect, Merida also has Fire in her heart and a light in her eyes, and.... As a norwegian, it's kind of funny to hear you pronounce the names and I feel starstruck since Norway made it's way into the backstory.
"Brave" was the only movie my sons' teared up during because they were worried that her mom died. It made me ugly cry real hard when they hugged me afterwards because it made them worried for me.

For a series titled, "The Messed Up Origins Of..." It's pretty upsetting that you dropped Mark Andrews' name multiple times, without _actually_ addressing the messed up origins of this film and the erasure of Brenda Chapman. This film is basically two movies smashed into one, and nearly the entire first half was Chapman's love letter to her and her daughter's own relationship. But that wasn't fanciful enough for Disney, so they brought in a man (shock, surprise) to fix a story that wasn't broken...and then sat with surprised Pikachu faces when audiences felt less than thrilled at the hard left the movie took with the bear storyline.
Absolutely agreed. Brenda Chapman is my aunt, and it was mildly upsetting to see Jon not mention my aunt hardly at all when this is her story, her creation, her effort.
I did not come across anything about Brenda Chapman being replaced/usurped by Mark Andrews anywhere in my research. Both she and Mark were featured prominently in the behind the scenes features, listed as co-directors, and they even included her interview where she explains how she came up with the idea of the story based on her relationship with her daughter so it wasn't clear to me that she somehow didn't get the credit she deserved. The 2 times I mentioned Mark were when I was directly quoting him from the commentary. I didn't mention Brenda's relationship with her daughter as that's not a component we were exploring in this episode - my focus was on the Scottish folklore and history that was used as inspiration.
Sorry you find my blunder "pretty upsetting" but if you can believe it, it was an honest mistake. The silver lining here is that I was already planning a Part 2 for this episode and now I can address Brenda's contribution. I hope you tune in and find it more to your liking.

I'm happy to report that I was already planning a Part 2 for this episode and will definitely be acknowledging her contribution then. I know it's a long-shot but if she wants to share her experience working on the film or her being ousted from the production I would love to speak with her so I can be as accurate in my description of the events as possible. If not, that's totally understandable. I've tracked down an eye-opening article she wrote about the situation and can share pieces of that too.

@@JonSolo Understandable, and I super appreciate you catching these comments. It's not something that's easily findable, due to Brenda not really speaking out until much later. I don't know if it was NDA related, or just classic Hollywood silence, to avoid being blacklisted, but she did stay pretty silent about it for quite a while. I think it says a lot about Disney/the industry that the behind the scenes shenanigans got pretty buried as well. We're only human though, and you are 100% correct that the point of the video was the folklore, and not the behind the scenes drama. I apologize for my comment coming off so critical. I should have given myself some time to be kinder, instead of posting straight out of emotion.

It's hard not to get a little heated when hearing Brenda's story, and I can see how me not mentioning her at all could come across as disrespectful and even somewhat negligent. I think your observation that Disney/Pixar did a good job burying the story is on-point, but still kind of frustrating that all the info I needed was only a google search away (if only I had thought to look for it!). I hope I wasn't too defensive in my response and I'm grateful to have gotten a reminder to be more thorough in my research.
Fairy rings happen because that certain species of mushroom will only take seed in virgin soil. Like tree rings, it's possible to count the age of the ring using the diameter of the mushroom cap.
The bonus about the old language was the best part.
One of my daughters has hair like Merida's. Long curly and a little untamed. Merida is only Disney Princess so far who wears her hair naturally.

Great episode!! With the haggis, you forgot oats or barley is one of the most important ingredients. The grains adding gluten to bind the offal, or supersede, if meat is in low supply. I love haggis; well, not canned haggis (yes, a real thing, the Scots equivalent of gas station sushi). Most of what we think we know about Scots history, the games, and the tartans, were invented or reconstructed to entertain Queen Victoria. After her husband Prince Albert bought Balmoral, she fell in love with the mythos of Scotland, which had been presented as fact until modern archeological study supplanted the hobby of the wealthy history fans known as antiquarians.
Don’t forget the spices! Pepper, nutmeg, coriander seeds & salt is what came up when I googled it.

Glad to know the origins or history behind 'Brave' has nothing scarring like 'Cinderella' and 'Snow White' haha. I'm so used to hearing some child being killed or someone dying in a gruesome way. This was actually quite nice.

In dutch whisps are called dwaallichtjes, which literally means something like wanderlights. I do remember some stories about them and they almost never end in a good way. Sometimes people said they were lights of the devil and in other stories they were lost souls. The message was always to never follow the dwaallichtjes because then you will wander off and get lost and well... die
Fun fact: that first seemingly unintelligible phrase the one suitor says is actually “if he were a wee bit closer, I could lob a caber at him, ken?” Meaning ‘do you reckon that if he were a little closer, I could throw a tree trunk at him?’

Brave is such a great movie and I love how unique Merida's story is, no love interests and both of her parents are alive and they also show that a royal family especially Princess aren't always perfect and pristine ,they also show here that even princesses, queens, princes and kings also have their imperfections.
I love how the witch pretty much only knows how to do one thing and then applies it to every situation. Like how the saying 'to a man with a hammer everything looks like a nail' The only thing she knows how to do is turn people into a bear. You want to be stronger than 10 men? BEAR! You want your mom to stop nagging you about getting married? BEAR!

Dunbroch castle literally means Fortfort castle in old Scots. Dun is derived from Irish-Scots and broch is lowland Nordic-Scots.

This movie holds a very special place in my heart. As a bratty teenager, I never had the greatest relationship with my mother. This movie made me love, appreciate, and respect her so much more. As I’ve gotten older over the years, I’ve become much more appreciative of her, and guilty for how I’d acted in the past. My mother is the most incredible woman in the world, and I hope she knows how much I love her. I’m incredibly grateful for her, especially now when I almost lost her a year and a half ago.😭🥰💙💛💙

Also, what human or humanoid was Gunther before becoming a pug? Pugs were originally bred as companions. In fact the perfect companion! Does anyone have suggestions?
Someone like Little John to Robin Hood, but Gunther is so little. Ron Weasley to Harry Potter. Just suggestions to get more ideas. Gunther could also have been a servant to a hero, such as Merlin to Prince Arthur in the TV series Merlin. In all the fairytales and lore my mind has ground to a halt. There must be someone that fits the bill? Or Gunther could be a sidekick? The Genie to Aladdin. Gus to Cinderella. The cricket to Pinocchio. The Hunter to Little Red Riding Hood.
To be honest i would like a disney movie based on eastern european folklore XD like imagine the fucking ton of eastern mythology that would be adapted: like we have it all here: dragons, ghouls, basilisks, hags but like 10 times scarier then the western equivalent.
Fuck no! We don't need that butchered too. disney has a way of eather destroying, misinforming or building stupid stereotypes that would take forever for the people to shake off. It's better to be obscure then be misinformed.

As someone who was born and raised in the highlands of Scotland, I love this movie! And I adore how they portrayed the beautiful scenery of the highlands and parts of our culture. It feels very homey to me. I remember when this film first came out when I was a little girl I had to go see the film 2 or 3 times
Also fun fact: several of the VAs in this movie live fairly nearby me. I’ve actually met the woman who played child Merida a couple times at events. She lives like half an hour away from me lol. She’s lovely :)
The whole splitting the kingdoms equally rather than primogeniture is the custom the Franks followed with Charlemagne etc and that's why his 'empire' was then just split up when he died and it took a couple generations to be reunited under one grandson
Also the concept of staying so long as an animal you end up being the animal is so common across fantasy - my favourite take on it is in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels

I love this movie. It makes me cry every time. It reminds me of my mom. Also, I took this story as Merida's mom, the Queen, representing society and the pressure we put on young women through their childhoods and lives. Merida is like any little girl. However, she is punished and limited by what is expected of her, while her little brothers are free to do what they wish. She even says, "They get away with murder." This is how we treat boys. We allow boys to just do as they wish because it's a "Man's" world. "Boys will be Boys"
I even recently had an old manager tell me, "We do not kick the doors open with our feet. It is not lady like." (Bruh, it's Covid. I'm not touching the door handle that I know never gets cleaned.) Proudly still kicking and shoving doors open to hopefully stay safer.

Love how interesting this video was! I will say, the will-o’-the-wisp bit made me question my families retelling of them. Some of my Scottish family said “They lead you to your fate or doom”. And my mother believed “they lead you on an adventure, or to your death”. Might have to do some nosing around and find out how long that’s been passed down for….
Also, the messed up origins or Gunther, is that pugs in general? Or him specifically? I suppose I’ll have to wait till next week to find out.

Hi, Jon: If you get a chance to visit the highlands on your trip to Scotland, it is worth the trip. The history, legends and lore of the highlands is worth listening too. The fairy pools, the lochs, the Black Cullin Mountains, the Isle of Harris which boasts of Aurther's table, a table made for a king with spectacular views and the Isle of Lewis. Including Rassay and Ionia, not to mention the prime highland wilderness is worth the trip. Including a chance to see the Roe deer roam about the highlands and visit some great highland festivals, including the highland games held annually in the highlands. Including, Dunvegan which boasts of the Fairy flag and the great claymore of Dunvegan said to have saved the clan in battle..
The skeleton should be holding a Solo-Cup.

I've done caber tossing. My sister in law actually got it to flip. We used to go to the Highland games all the time when we lived in California and then Oregon. I even have pictures of my oldest son at his first Highland games.

4:35 They knew the dynamics of what was expected of Queens and Princesses in medieval Europe, England, and Scotland, there are literal volumes of records and journals filled of such ettiquites and expectations through the centuries, and Historian worth their salt can cite particular tomes for any country of any given time period without blinking an eye.

One of the many things I love about Brave is how, between Merida, her mother, and her father, all three are right, and all three are wrong. And the dad being the only one aware of that fact makes him the comic relief, part of the problem, part of the solution, and a source of both wisdom and immaturity... As a father should be.

As a descendant of one of the largest highland clans known as Clan MacLeod, including a living historian. I would like to provide my input on highland culture of the period, from research that I've done on highland culture of the medieval period. During the Medieval period in about 500 A.D., a group of Scotian Dalriada settle up in what we know as Inverness up in the highlands of Scotland in a territory called Argyll, located on the western region of Inverness. The Scotian Dalriada continued to reside up in the highlands of Scotia throughout the Medieval period and beyond. In the mid-late nineth century my ancestor Ivar the Boneless a powerful Viking ruler, who ruled both Dalriada/Ireland and Scotia/Scotland for over a hundred years. During this period, Ivar the Boneless was known to have not only inhabited Dalriada but also Scotia in the regions known as the Western Isles, Orkney, Argyll, Caitness, Dumbarton Rock, Sutherland and Ionia. Evidence of the Vikings of Scotia is seen in Brave through elements such as the Viking helmets and the Scottish gallies originally derived from Viking gallies. Examples of female leadership presented in Brave by Merida and her mother are true, due to some women in positions of power within the clans having to take on these roles when their husbands or other male family members couldn't. Another example of a strong female leader for Clan MacLeod is Dame Flora MacLeod who led the clan, because there was no male heir available to do so. The tartans of this period were far different than shown in Brave as being worn by the clans in this movie. Tartans were more of a 19th century garment and worn more in this period than in the Medieval period. Often times women as well as men hunted and gathered food for the clan, during this period. As the clans were made up of communal family groups who pulled together, in order to feed the clan. The highland games originated in Dalradia in 2,000 B.C. and brought over to Scotia in the fourth or fifth century.

“We don’t know much about the role of royal women in medieval Scotland”, I just finished reading a book about Scottish queens from 1034-1714, and the majority of it was focused on the medieval period. If people can be arsed the research is there.
Honestly this video just shows why Hollywood, or frankly Americans in general shouldn’t be allowed near Scottish culture, they use it like a buffet, taking the bits they want, discarding anything that doesn’t suit their fantasy. Contrary to what the guy in the video seems to think, Scotland is not just the Highlands, in fact the Highlands is only a small area in the north of Scotland, Dunbar is in East Lothian, which is nearer England than the Highlands. Kelly MacDonald is using her own accent which is from Glasgow, in the west coast of Scotland, Callanish is in the Outer Hebrides. Mashing all that together doesn’t give you Scottish culture, it gives you Hollywood nonsense, and as Hollywood nonsense Brave is fine, but it’s not remotely Scottish.
What was Eric Bloodaxe doing in the there, he was king of Norway and Northumbria: Northumbria is in England.
