Lion King doesn't seem too similar to Hamlet with a few exceptions, but Lion King 2, Simba's Pride is very similar to Romeo and Juliet. They leaned into Shakespeare the second time around for sure....well except the ending. That is very different haha
I'm sometimes a little sad they never kill the characters at the end but you can't have everything lol

I agree. In Simba’s future, his pride has an enemy lion pride, he wants his daughter to avoid.
Even the movie about Timon and Pumba is a, somewhat, reference to Shakespeare taking on a parody of Hamlet in which they tell the story from the point of view of 2 characters who are responsible of the events of the original story, can't remember the name, but's cool

I watched the Lion King with my kids a few weeks ago for the first time in a few years and I'm not crying you are
Donald Hofer I never cry in a movie, I don’t get it. If it’s not real then why care at all, for example: any “heartwarming coming of age” film I never watch. Because all it is is cheesy crap attempting to even be remotely good, even though it always fails for me. I’ll only cry if something real, and really really really sad happens. A movie is not real, so does not deserve real emotion. Also the “I’m not crying you are!” Is super overused and almost as cheesy as the films that makes people say that.

@Tingle gamer I think it's different when it comes to a show compared to a movie, because the longer the amount of time you are with a character the more you are going to feel for them. A movie doesn't give us nearly enough time to get used to the character compared to someone in a show, game, or book does.
Getting emotional over a movie simply means that a person is invested in what they are watching at least for the duration in which they are watching it. Of course we know it's all fake. Crying over a movie is kind of on par with getting scared over a movie for this reason. The events never happened, they just got in a person's head. Nothing wrong with feeling emotions over a movie, so long as it doesn't interfere with your real life. Some people are just more sensitive than others.

Here's a quote in relation to the Kimba situation:
(Takayuki Matsutani, president of Tezuka Productions in Tokyo, said there is some similarity between the animated creations on two counts: the son grows up to be the king's successor after his father's death, and the symbolic scene where Simba stands on a rock in "The Lion King," whereas in the Japanese version, the opening scene has Kimba standing on a rock. He also agreed there were similarities in the baboon, the bird, the hyenas and the evil lion.
"However, quite a few staff of our company saw a preview of 'The Lion King,' discussed this subject and came to the conclusion that you cannot avoid having these similarities as long as you use animals as characters and try to draw images out of them," Matsutani said.
"If the Disney Co. had gotten a hint from 'The Jungle Emperor,' Osamu Tezuka, a founder of our company, would have been pleased," he continued. "And, we feel the same way, rather than making a claim.
"Therefore, our company's general opinion is 'The Lion King' is a totally different piece from 'The Jungle Emperor' and is an original work completed by the Disney production's long-lasting excellent production technique.")

That is very gracious of them. Doesn't mean Disney didn't lie about it. No one in huge animation company not knowing about an internationally known cartoon? None of their animators, lawyers, publicists, archivists? C'mon...what a load of horseshit.
malpaul There isn’t really too many similarities between them except design, and people at Disney including the voice of simba said they’ve heard of Kimba before.
disney is the thomas edison of production companies.
Even if the story is different, it still copies quite a lot when it comes to visuals and all of that. Things like using the back legs to push the bad guy in the air and over the cliff, the sunset, the roar at the end of the huge battle, Zazu and the other similar bird in Kimba, and the scar on both of the villains. Those are just *a few* similarities.

I kinda hope if does do the sword and the stone he covers Le Morte d'Arthur (the death of Aurthur) which covers his death at the hands of Mordred. It really is a very dark and twisted.

You forget the true origin of The Lion King's story though. For that you need look no further than the mythos of Ancient Egypt. Just swap Mufasa for Osiris, Scar for Set, and Simba for Horus. Almost exactly the same plot.
There are only a few basic plots for stories and they have been recycled for centuries. I heard someone say,"People have been writing stories for 5,000 years and they used up all the original ideas during the first 500."

Hm apart from Simba/Horus's mother becoming impregnated by Mufasa/Orisis after his death by use of magic - but that wouldn't be family-friendly enough for Disney :)

Also Mufasa wasn't brought back from death three or so times by his wife. And I feel like Mufasa would have done something about Scar after the first time...
And not only that, but several versions of how Horus eventually ascended the throne involve competing with Set and them being equally matched in pretty much every way, the other gods were about to give Set the throne due only to him being older and more experienced and Osirus piped up from the underworld with, "Do NOT make me come up there. I WILL bring an army." And thus Horus was crowned.
actually the real african history of sundiata keita the founder of maliian empire is the real historic lion king literally called that and his story is nearly verbatim to disneys version.

Thing is.... we don't know who Nala's dad is... there aren't any other male Lions in the pride... so either Nala is the daughter of Scar (which would make her Simba's cousin) or Nala is a daughter of Mufasa and another Lioness making her Simba's half-sister. Or her dad is just some shmoe Lion, who had a one night stand with Nala's mom.

I grew up in the 1960s. Kimba, Speed Racer and Gigantor were all syndicated on our local UHF stations. I seem to recall Kimba came on before Dark Shadows, but I had to switch to VHF to catch Dark Shadows. For those who don't know; VHF was your 1-13 channels, and UHF was the larger number channels like 38, 56 and 27. It took two indoor antennas to get the TV channels. Rabbit Ears for VHF and Loops for UHF. If your Dad was into Popular Science Magazine, he usually erected a large stand-alone antenna on the roof.
I remember my Dad saying: Nobody will ever pay for FREE TV. Guess who bought the first Video recorder and had our whole 3-tenement building wired with Cable! Yup! My Dad.

As a 4- 5yr old child in the late 60's I LOVED Kimba. I would make ears like his using paper and bobby pins, or sometimes pink ones like his gf Kitty,,and play imaginary games.....🤣(I was an only child with a vivid imagination lol!)

They should've just owned up to the fact that it was Kimba inspired. Japan would've seen it as an honor and *it'd be a homage to Tezuka and Walter's friendship.* Disney chose to be an @$$ instead and rip off a dead man before the corpse got cold. *Like they've done to Stan Lee.*
I really didn't understand on what you meant by Stan Lee but even Stan Lee wasn't the only person who wrote the comics and I completely get that it may have been a Kimba rip off but I'd suggest looking at @King Bolt's comment which as far as Im concerned pretty much says that it would be better for their friendship and Walt Disney wasn't dumb so he would have known about the benefits of that so my personal opinion is that please give evidence before you make a claim in the comments.
And also if you really want to make an accurate claim watch Jungle Emperor Leo as well. If you are extremely interested I would suggest doing as much research as you can on more that 5 websites before you make a claim and remember to credit them. The idea of watching that was from @sinister Sweet. PLEASE double check so you dont misinform someone.

The Kimba thing is BS because, while, yes, "Simba" rhymes with it, it's also the Swahili word for "lion", as "Mufasa" is the Swahili for "king". And I believe "Nala" means either "princess" or 'queen", but I'm not certain which one.
"Nala" means "gift", actually. But yeah.

People still thinking that it's a rip-off even though it was made 50+ years before. Many many people. Apparently they can't read descriptions, listen to videos or do proper Google searches. 🙃 Now, reading "Kimba is a rip-off with ugly animation!!" Gets old fast.
This is coming from someone who grew up on The Lion King, loves it, but can't ignore Disney's wrong doing. I think it's okay for people to spread the word. There's a lot of misinformed people. His videos are about getting details on where the stories originated from. There's too many similarities to just ignore this. So I kinda expect him to add it in, but of course he didn't have to though.

Obsessive Kimba fan here to make a small correction… Kimba's original name in Japan is Leo, so Tezuka didn't use the Swahili name. That was the American translators' decision.
I've heard that it was actually taken from a producer who frequently called his daughter "Kimba" as a shorthand for "Kimberly." However, that was only something I read from a fan site without any verification. It would be pretty cool if the translators new about the word "Simba" and created the name Kimba around that, but given how generic the other characters' names are (in both the English and Japanese versions) I doubt it.
As for the inspiration theory, I think that Disney was hoping to remake Kimba or at least make a Kimba-like movie shortly after Tezuka's death in 1989. However, they realized that they couldn't acquire the rights and the director team changed enough to where the crew made a unique story with some unfortunate parallels thanks to early concept art and possibly artists recycling inspiration. I highly recommend anyone watch some "Jungle Emperor Leo" yourselves and come to your own conclusions.

If you ask me, I think they took most of their inspiration from Hamlet and the other stories mentioned in the video, and most of the slight similarities are coincidences. I love that you're very polite and opened minded about it though. One of the biggest similarities are the villains. Claw and Scar. The fact that they're dark skinned? That's a coincidence. It's extremely common for animators to make the villains much darker then the other characters to further drive the point across that they're evil goth villains lol. Hades from Hercules for example. He's much darker skinned than the other gods of Olympus. And this makes sense since he's the king of the Underworld.

I'd love for you to do a revisiting of this topic because
1- saying that Lion King isn't based off of Hamlet is a bit silly, because the creators of Lion King were very open about using that story as a blueprint. Sure, some aspects of the story are different, but just because something isn't a shot for shot copy doesn't mean it wasn't inspired.
2- Lion King didn't actually copy Kimba, and while this is a very popular belief, most everything people use to compare is all coincidence. I highly recommend YMS's review of Kimba 😊

It's even harder to deny the Simba-Kimba connection when we realize how awfully similar they look. I mean, even the VISUALS are similar.
I think Jon must have wanted to not directly state his opinion on the matter, but there is a lot of evidence that he left out. Including concept work of Simba as a white lion before they even knew what style the art was going to be. For me, the fact that Disney's stance, even after being asked about it for decades, is that they still have never even heard of Kimba is the nala in the cloudfin.
The entire controversy is about how blatant it was, not that it had thematic similarities.

Look at the scenes Jon showed of Kimba. Some aren't just similar, they're practically the same in the way they are drawn.

I never said it's a rip-off, or a copy, what I said there is that there is a connection. It's very visually clear there is when the shots are even drawn in similar positions, framing, etc. I also didn't mean art style (though that wasn't clear, sorry), even because in style they're very different, but when we see scenes set in very similar ways, the stories resonate in similar ways, even the Big Bads look alike, it's really hard to come around and deny there is a connection there. Sure, it could be a HUGE coincidence, but let's be real here. It probably wasn't. I don't need to work for Disney; I have eyes.
And you're very naïve if you don't realize art inspires/influences other art. Tezuka himself was inspired by Bambi, and admitted to it, although I can see a wider gap between Bambi and Kimba than between Kimba and Lion King. I don't know enough about Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry (though while they draw from the same source, they're also very very different in many ways, thematically, story-wise and visually), but it wouldn't surprise me if one by inspired by the other (whoever came first), either. That's the way of art. And yes, Marvel and DC are also awfully similar in many ways, but they're *aware* of it, too.
Ironically TLK is my favourite Disney movie, actually the only one I genuinely like, but I still think it's shitty to deny the obvious. If they just came out and said "yes, we drew inspiration from Kimba" nobody would say a damn thing, and it'd be way more honest than trying to deny what everyone with eyes can see.

I would be interested in the Messed Up Origins of Sailor Moon, where you could talk about Serenity and Endymion. No...not the anime version of them, the Greek version.
The Lion King really isn't that similar to Kimba, YMS does a good job explaining all the differences. They're just both stories about cartoon animals in Africa
No he doesn't. His argument is that because Disney's feature length movie didn't cram in every story element from a long-running cartoon and comic that somehow proves there was no plagiarism.

This video + Your Movie Sucks giving an over-hour length debunking of the idea that The Lion King actually is a Kimba ripoff = yeah, it always was more original than people gave it credit for. Though definitely some of the important people involved in making The Lion King had to be somewhat familiar with Kimba (who is only called that in the English dub; in Japan he's Leo the Lion which like Simba just means "Lion the Lion").
I think the darkness and seriousness with which The Lion King treats its themes defeats the Kimba theory. Kimba tended to be silly and offer easy answers. The Lion King does the opposite, so it's not a copy. It's a powerful, dark derivation of the same concept, and execution counts more than idea.

I’ve always wanted to go up to someone and randomly say “You know, I’ve seen a murder when I was younger”
And they answer with something like “What? What happen”
And I go on saying that the son was getting chased and the father tries to save his only son and the fathers brother ends up murdering his brother to put the blame on his nephew, so he can take of the fathers land.
And then I say that I still remember their names, turns to face the person and says in a serious tone “Mufusa, Simba and Scar.”
And just watch the person be really confuse. 😂😂

I suggest to tell someone a completely different story that's more of a mindfuck when you break it down.
The story of a married man losing both his wife and his children to a serial killer, all except one son who was left crippled. Later that son was kidnapped and the father has to get help from a mentally disabled woman to help him find him again.
Most people would guess that you were talking about the lion king, but this story would be harder to guess if you don't know that you're talking about a disney movie

I was so sad when I found out Disney ripped off that story. Seriously, all they had to do was admit they took inspiration from Kimba and maybe give the creator a small cut of the profit, I mean they could definitely afford it. Pure greed right there

Thank goodness I’m also realising Hamlet was a dark parody of Ur-Hamlet, which in turn was a dark parody of Amleth. The concept of Hamlet is actually very Ancient, possibly a few millennia old given its Ancient Egyptian origins, but Hamlet as a character was only created hundreds of years ago.
I really like your idea of a miniseries about different archetypes. Go for it!

Very Interested To See The Origin From The Perspective Of What I Don't Know Already
I think the biggest problem with the Kimba/Simba situation is just how many people knew of Kimba when making Lion King, and how many thought it WAS a Kimba remake. There have been a number of people who thought it was, including one of the animators (I don’t know for sure if it’s the head animator, but I think so?) so there are visual similarities.
As for me, idk if it was or wasn’t, but one thing is clear, people did know of Kimba on the team.
Also - there was a Kimba movie made around the same time of Lion King, that was only shown in America once, before Disney took legal action because it was too similar to Lion King. You hadn’t mentioned it, so I wasn’t sure if you knew that.
If I was the gambling sort, I would lay money on the fact that Disney was completely aware of the intellectual theft they were committing with Kimba; but, being the pop culture/entertainment behemoth that they are, they knew they'd get away with it. Then, to turn around and try to sue the company whose property they blatantly ripped off to get them to back off from making their plagiarism obvious to American audiences with the Kimba film... also, so Disney. Look, this is a conglomerate that will sue a *preschool* for painting their characters on the school wall! Of course, they're nefarious enough to openly rob a successful idea from another successful creator! They're shameless. I enjoy Disney content... but I also see them for what they are, or rather, are capable of.

No was jus answering why scar didnt kill simba. In a story you need to give all characters their flaw to make a story. If its too perfect then it wouldnt have any sense.

Of corse... Kimba is the name we know in America.
In Japan the white lion is called Leo. The story is Jungle emperor Leo.
Plus the Name Kimba is said to mean “ coward”.
And "simba" is Swahili for "lion"

Well since there’s only one male lion in a pride (aka Mufasa in The Lion King) that would mean Simba would kill his own father, after he already died.
That also adds a *whole* new view on Simba and Nala’s relationship...
I was thinking the same thing. They are basically siblings or cousins if we follow the real life lion prides.
