I've been wearing a nighthawk every day since 1999... Anyone who thinks citizens watches are no good, are buying watches for reasons other than having a watch.
@@andreabilardi508 I seriously doubt that. But if that's what you think, don't buy one. I've got almost a dozen, going back at almost 30 years, as new as last year, and every few years between. So far, the top comments on the matter, seem to be agreeing with me. So again, there's that...
I am 60 years old. Back the time when I was a kid, my first watch was a mechanical Citizen. The most reliable and dependable watch you may think of. Like owning a good old Honda civic. I recently purchased a The Citizen washi paper for my son’s birthday. We are talking top notch craftsmanship and technology here, the kind of watch that will last for decades, perhaps more
I have a modern nighthawk 1/5sec chronograph, and Ive loved it, every second of it, it's a quiet watch, but blends well, chronograph is accurate to .1sec per hour (59:59)
I've had an eco-drive for 15 years, still accurate, same battery, I love it. I'm adding a Citizen automatic to my collection. I thought about Seiko, but they are made in China and Malasia, and all have Made in Japan printed on them. Citizen is a solid 100-year-old company, all watch parts made by them in Japan.
You're mistaken. There are different ratings. 'Made in Japan', or just 'Japan', means fully built there. 'Movement Japan' means it's a Japanese movement, but cased elsewhere. And then some models aren't at all built in Japan. You just need to note what's actually being said to you. They aren't lying.
Ben has, hands down, the best watch channel, however is missing the mark on Citizen. Like a lot of other Japanese brands, Citizen keeps the good stuff for their domestic market. They also focus more on the higher end and even has GS competitor called Campanola . Citizen is also one of the few watch companies that maintains control over their entire production process and develops their own movements. Even third party sales of Miyotas are not particularly cheap. Citizen is a dyed in the wool watch company and always has been. I hate so say it but Casio is primarily a calculator company that also makes keyboards and sometimes watches but never mechanical ones. Take that Ben. pew pew.
Casio may be also a calculator company, but they've ALREADY proven they can make awesome, accurate watches regardless of the price tier. OK, maybe not mechanical but within quartz they dominate - why bash them for something they don't even make? It's not a fair contest...
@@GodIsInHisHeaven I’m not bashing my compadre. I don’t think Ben’s comparison is fair though. They are two very different companies. Citizen is a watch company that adapted by using electronics while Casio did the opposite. One is the head(casio) and the other is the heart(citizen).
@@MrMadvillan I agree that comparison with Casio is not fair, because any watch compared to Casio is simply unnecessary. Tho, in this case, it's probably Citizen company to blame, maybe because they don't have much models presented on the market. Whenever I see some Citizen watches on sale, I find them a bit boring and meh. My impression of Citizen is they produce only watches for white collar employees who work in cubicles. LOL

Funny thing about watch rankings is that they're based on personal views. They're not like computer builds that can be arranged according to objective measurements. If Ben thinks Citizen belongs to B rank, that's fine. I do appreciate the second look though. I own a Citizen Avion and promaster divers myself which I both adore and would put at A rank along with the rest.
Just got a Citizen "Garrison" Eco Drive AW0050-82E and it's very well made for its price, the seconds hand does line up with the minutes marks. Worth looking at!
I have CITIZEN Promaster Diver BN0158-18X (green dial) and they are great quality just out of the box. Alignment, precise of manufacturing, feel of crown, real ISO certification, luminescene on level of much more expensive watches... Real deal breaker for that price! Definitely best price / value watch I've had. Really love them.
I think depending on the watch family, Citizen ranks lower or higher depending on several factors. For instance, Promaster, Super Titanium, some Stilettos, etc are great, great watches. Other options, such as the Chandler look quite cheap (however they could be good ones).

I bought a Citizen titanium GMT pro master BJ7111-51M. I have to say I like the look of this watch better then some Rolex watches I have seen in the window of the Rolex dealer. I can say the main advantage of the titanium is the weight saving. It isn’t indestructible. When I was removing a link from the band my pin ejection tool bent and left a small scratch near the hole of the excess link that was being removed. Even if I was to put it back, the clasp would hide the scratch once closed. And I have to confess I didn’t notice the alignment issue until I saw this. On my watch only the bottom half is unaligned. The top half looks aligned, especially as it hits the 12 o’clock marker. The other thing with Citizen is that it is competitively priced. To find a Seiko titanium with sapphire crystal I would be forking out 5 times the price.
The official Citizen UK range is very poor compared to what is available elsewhere. Even the European market gets a much wider and more interesting range, so it pays to look at the grey import market.
I got Citizen AT8185-71E. It's black so it's a neutral/safe color. One can't ever go wrong with black & it's stunning! Especially during the day. 🤔 I bought a Citizen titanium watch back in 1993 it has 7 functions, timer, stopwatch, second time zone etc. Tho a quartz watch all these functions are mechanical and it has a really small size of 35 mm. Okay it was expensive back than but my point is they can make smaller multifunction watches if they want to. And mine still works!
I have a Citizen Tough, sapphire and 200M water resistance, great lume, all for a tad over $200 via Amazon (217 I think). it's my do everything, go anywhere watch with classic design elements. But I think Citizen's worst issue is a lack of clear design language across the models, except where the DL is "cram the dial full of shit of varying sizes and complexity."
IMHO Seiko and Citizen are the top tier, with Casio just behind. And this despite that I no longer own a Citizen! (I have 4 Seikos, 3 Casios & 3 misc). Need to get a Citizen or two. Now that I have a Casio Oceanus, I absolutely love the eco-drive. Three of my Seikos are Titanium and that just fab. The way I am looking at watches now is this checklist: (1) Quartz (2) Sapphire (3) Titanium (4) Eco-drive.

I Like and own Citizen watches they too can have many functions, but I agree they tend to be on large spectrum which often discourage small wrister like me, however IMHO and my experience I consider Eco Drive technology far better than any other watch brand.
Thank you and a very well done video! Seiko is good but is obviously more geared to automatics while Citizen products are geared more to quartz watches. My very first diver's watch was an Aqualand and I have bought Citizen watches ever since becuase the quality and aesthetics of their watches are solid. Casio's quality has come up too and I like their Oceanus and Edifice lines. The kind of watch one buys or likes is soley up to the consumer. However, I have consistently been pleased with Citizen's products.
great video, I actually have the chance of buying this watch but am on the fence around one question if you can please answer for me. Can the band of the watch in metal be switched out for a leather band if I so wanted? Thank you
Ben! Have you seen the NB1050? That may be worth taking a look at, it's a size, value, and style that seems to be within your preference. High-beat automatic with sapphire and duratect coating, under $500.
You may have a point when it comes to men's watches and sizes etc, but the Eco-Drive watches are (often) insane value for money and their lady watches are amazing. My wife have several (gifted by me). Bang for buck is wicked for the girly stuff. But yeah... I own zero Citizens myself so there's that.
My Citizen watch is 22 years old .. it loses a second a month .. with ordinal battery .. Citizen gives a 5 GT because unless you treat them bad are not going to need repairing.
An excellent review for a Citizen watch at an affordable price that works for you Ben. Well done. I have a few Citizen watches although I've not made a recent purchase of the brand for a year or two. Personally I've had no real problems with the brand, so far alignment has been good as has accuracy. I have a larger wrist so my model choice has been wider and mine tended to be purchased on lightening deals on run out models. Consistency wise I think Casio have the edge, they also cater for a much wider wrist size generally I think and that goes for the cheapest through to more expensive models so I agree I think from my experience I'd have Casio a whisker higher than Citizen. Both are worthy of consideration but just don't expect quite the incredible consistency of the Casio production machine for everything else and that includes far more expensive brands. Ultimately if you are happy with your watch that is what matters and not what I or others think. Nice one Ben!
Citizen is insane value for money if you do not buy their cheapest watches. The promaster line-up is insane watches at a good price ( some more expensive than others )
I don't think you were wrong tbh. Whilst Citizen has incredible value, like Super Titanium, a 6 year warranty, and a Solar Quartz movement. It's not the same quality as Casio or other brands at the same level, and they lack so many modern features. Casio is God tier for a reason.
Eh I’m with you, I have 1 citizen that was my first diver, chose it over an skx even. But further perusal of the collections for me is a bit of a nothing burger. Just not that into the designs personally, and that’s okay.
modern citizens are made to look like any other modern watch . but, citizen has a long history, and they have created some really interesting watches in the past . citizen has created the thinnest 3 hands mechanical watch ever to came out of a japanese factory. the diamond flake. ultra rare today .
I can see how a bad alignment could turn you off. I’ve bought all my Citizen watches in person, so very different than the crapshoot of online shopping. My first Timex I bought was online. And it was my last Timex. Ridiculously misaligned face. Like, $6 watch quality. Right back in the mail it went.
I have an Eco Drive Citizen and for almost 10 years it has kept dead on time and still looks good. I would call it a solid watch that is worth the money.
Got my ecodrive with my first paycheck in the 1990's. Still keeps time and date, never serviced or run out of battery. I mean, what other purchase can stand up to this neglect and use?
As a Citizen owner, I’ve always liked and been more than satisfied with their watches. They do exactly what they were built to do and exactly what I bought them for. That’s what I like in a watch. Well built and precise. In summary, Citizen watches are great, but they’re not meant for everyone.
I love every Citizen watch I own, 5 or 6 of them. They are all Ecodrive quartz. Some were expensive for a quartz watch, be nice if you could get their fit, finish and quality and such a bit cheaper
Well built and precise is also why I have mine. Got it 10 years ago and its never missed a beat after wearing it pretty much every day, and the hand alignment is still perfect as far as I can see. I got it with the intention of never having to buy another watch, and seems to be doing well so far.
My first watch was the Citizen Blue Angels watch and it’s one of my favs - even years later. It radio syncs nightly and I have never had to change a battery. My biggest complaints are the 23mm band I night glow. A 22mm or 24 mm band would have been ideal. I also feel the night glow could be improved.
@@allisonsmith9050I could easily argue that Citizen is the greatest watch company of all time. They don’t have great lume though and need to step up their game.
My dad bought me a citizen watch at the airport when I was 12. It was digital/analog and also told the temperature. I couldn’t believe my luck! Over the years new watches came and went and for around 30 years the citizen watch sat in my drawer untouched. A few weeks back I found it again and put a new battery in it. Amazingly it started up again as new. That is a great quality product.
Spot on! About three years ago, I bought a solar Seiko. The POS pissed off after a month! Got a less expensive Corso and the thing just won't quit much less lose even a second a week.
Citizen watches are a fantastic value. As a watch collector, I have aspired to higher end Swiss watches, but day to day work watch is a Citizen or sister company Bulova
i have citizens for daily wear and bulova precisionists for dress watches. my favorite thing is that they make big enough watches. ben's gripe is that they only have grown up sized watches.
YUP, I have a day-date field watch, PMD56, 2 promaster divers, and a dress watch all Citizen Eco-Drive. The durability and the comfort factor regarding the no need for maintenance make it awesome daily for a university student like me for different occasions.

@@louiscyfer6944 the price is mostly from super titanium - material used in spacecraft. Super durable and light. I plan on only using that watch for rest of my life, and not spend on 5 or 6 like most ppl
One of the great things about Citizen is that they seem to have more sapphire crystals at lower prices than other companies, at least from what I've seen. That's key for someone looking for an affordable watch. I expect a watch case to get banged up over time but I want the crystal to be pristine.
Good point, I've noticed they use sapphire a lot on their watches. Seiko might want to take a lesson from Citizen. I prefer Sapphire to the Seiko Hardlex. I tend to scratch watch crystals, and Sapphire has been the only material that resists the scratches.
I like Citizen and own two of them and was surprised when you put them in "B-tier" but that is your opinion and you are allowed to have one so i dont understand the hate. People have different experiences with different products. I do however think Casio offers better value and those that ive owned have been excellent.
Citizens are built to last and tend to be very accurate. My 10 year old Citizen Eco-Drive is strangely more accurate than my fairly new Casio G-Shock GD350. However, the misalignment is an issue.
Not going to judge you. I’ll simply state a point in favor of Citizen. I have three and their capacitators haven’t failed me, unlike two Seiko Solars and a Kinetic.
I don't get Seiko Kinetic. It's the worst of both worlds. You have the bulk and weight of an auto without the sweeping seconds hand. Solar is a much better alternative.
I know its at the very high end, but the Caliber 0100 - amazing with an accuracy of +/- 1 second a year - any Watch company that can engineer something like this has my Vote
Just binge watching your videos and I had the same thoughts when you ranked Citizen so low. I recently took my 21yr old Citizen Eco drive out of storage, recharged it, reset it by pulling the pin for 30s and hey presto off it goes and I haven't had to do anything else. How many other watches keep going for 20+ years with zero maintenance or battery changes?
@@ljb9983 I don't know the official advice (check the Citizen website) put now personally I'd leave it in light if I could, I didn't have that option at the time.
I bought a Citizen watch as a graduation gift for myself and it has been running flawlessly for 7 years. The only thing I have to do with the watch is to adjust the date every other month.
Citizen is amongst the best watches in the world. Period. Love them. And they are definitely in the top of tiers. They're better built than Seiko for sure.
Around 1997, I picked up a Citizen Skyhawk Eco-Drive for $470 from my jeweler. List was $650 I believe. It's still working and showing little wear on the bracelet clasp. It still keeps time and is radio controlled. It's the only watch I wear. Of course I don't wear it when working on my car or house. I think Citizen's are a great value.
I bought a skyhawk in titanium about 20 odd years ago. For some weird reason the jeweller seemed to think that I didn't want to buy it at £400 and while I was admiring it suddenly blurted out that I could have it for £350! Naturally, I didn't tell him that I was about to agree to buy it at £400. Best watch I have ever owned! But wait until you have to get it serviced. I've just paid £200 to have a new capacitor fitted! Why hate on Timex? They do a great job at what they do. Some of the price points are a bit high for their reissues but people obviously are willing to pay for the vintage look.
Citizen are one of the best watch companies, innovative technology. Eco-drive, great job of titanium. I have two citizens, both eco drive. one titanium radio controlled then another stainless steel. My other watch is a sporty G shock
I owned an Eco-Drive for 3 years. Kept it in a drawer for months and it never stopped. I can't remember the time ever being out on it (Maybe needed to change it once?) I sold it on ebay regretfully 3 months ago and then bought another today because I missed it so much. My life is whole again.
I bought a Citizen Promaster in 2001 planning to actually use it for scuba diving. I have made over 500 dives with it and it has worked flawlessly. I have used and abused this watch on several continents and just recently replaced the crystal for the first time. I thought about buying a Luminox or Omega to replace it, but I have no reason to. It still looks great and performs perfectly. You can have your posh Seikos or whatever. This Citizen is amazing.
I have always rated citizen higher than Seiko. I’ve owned both, the Seiko quality has always been worse, never understood why Seiko is more popular with watch snobs.
probably because of grand seikos. I only have one watch which is a citizen but i want a seiko because of the lumibrite hands and they offer 10 bar water resistance at a low price
Big fan of the channel, Ben! Usually agree with your videos, but have to disagree with this one. The build quality, engineering and selection of Citizen watches is pretty much unmatched by any of its competitors on the affordable end of the market. In particular, their affordable dive watch range is excellent - 200m divers, both eco drive and autos for under 200 quid. The NY00 selection look good on small wrists (like mine) and were even used by the Italian Navy for 10 years. Quality watches!
They have more sales then Seiko Watch Co, appealing more to non watch guy rather than watch nerds, the ecodrive is just what made them become really successful...they become really big that they owning 2 swiss brand(alpina, federique constant) and bulova...not forget to mention miyota is under them...
@@watchcheapo1801 They also owned La Joux Peret, which makes Arnold & Son watches.Citizen also own Angelus watches. Casio analog (3 hands or Chrono) watches also uses alot of Miyota movement which are from Citizen. I think beside digital movement, Casio do not have their own analog quartz movement, because originally Casio was a calculator company before they started to make digital watches.
40 watches in my collection. 4 Citizen’s… NY040(automatic 90’s diver), The ‘Solar Tough’, Blue Angels Nighthawk, and a PVD coated Promaster Diver. I end up selling off a lot of Watches but these have stayed in my collection. I find the bracelets to be much more comfortable and a better quality than the Seiko equivalents. I’ve never had a misalignment on any Citizen And I certainly can’t say that I got a number of Seiko’s that I’ve owned. I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist… And I must admit that I find a lot of their watches right on the edge of what I can wear size-wise. Thanks for the cool opinion piece!
Love Citizen. I've just bought another, this time an automatic promaster diver's 200 metres, certificated thingy, the rest of mine are eco-drives. Banter is one thing but entirely dismissing them and slagging them off is another. Citizen has many fans and there are many other watch channels out there.
Citizen's mechanical watches are pretty decent. They even launched a 38mm SARB counterpart in their lineup recently that looks pretty great. The other leg up Citizen has over other brands in my opinion is their Eco-Drive GMTs. The only Citizen I have in my collection is the BJ7100-82E Promaster GMT with a world timer bezel and a traveling GMT (or "true GMT" as some would call it). It looks great IMO and packs a lot of value.
citizen watches are fantastic. I own/ have owned may Citizens. Great QC, excellent time keeping, never needs a battery. Their chronos and divers are especially good. Just try to find ones with sapphire crystal when possible. The Chandler and Attesa series are personal favorites. If you prefer smaller watches, the chandler AT0200-05E is 39mm. I've owned it for years and can say it's a great piece, even with the mineral crystal.
I have 2 citizens and i have to say they are great for what they are more than i expected, i also have omega, breitling and panerai not to compare but i wear my octavia citizen more than those others, not only funcionality and look but also for how sadly dangerous now a days is.
I've recently got an NY-0040 and must say it's placed me firmly in the Citizen fanboy camp whilst completely agreeing with your criticisms regarding their range. Most of their watches are indeed too large and their designs are indeed a little bland when viewed as a whole. I do however strongly urge you to get your hands on a black dial NY-0040, it's possibly the best automatic diver you can get in the sub £200 price point. It's ISO rated to 20atm with genuine Special Forces heritage with the Marina Militare (who internally tested the watch successfully to 500m) and looks so good in the flesh with that inky dial.
Citizen is one of my favorites brand, in my old days a digital Casio is my daily watch and a "tank" gold tone of Citizen quartz wear for weekend, both all accompany with me with twenty happy years, and now I have an eco drive and I believe that another twenty happy years will on it way.
I can't think of any watch fanatic that would choose a Casio over a Citizen. Unless it's for a calculator watch. But hey, anyone can make a youtube channel these days.
Citizens are amazing even in the luxury class (such as the Chronomaster), comparing detail wise to a Grand Seiko, but unfortunately you have to import those from Japan. I guess there's not much of a North American market for such things, likely due to the preconceptions most of us have regarding Citizen.

I have a number of citizen watches and I think they are great. If you were to rate watches on a price to engineering and quality basis, I think they would be placed right at the very top of the tree. Obviously that's just my view. However, an ecodrive motor together with titanium and sapphire crystal is pretty hard to beat
A really good to check out is the Promaster diver. I personally have the Citizen NY0100-50M, which is made out of titanium and I absolutely love it. It's the perfect summer watch!
Malaysia love Casio and seiko than citizen
LOL
@@damyr yeah it’s unfortunate that they have such a limited selection despite being bigger than seiko even.

Hmmm, Casio make some attractive analogue faced watches and then deface them with putrid Digital displays.🤢🤮

I wear a 1997 Skyhawk WR200. Still runs and looks fine after all these years. Amazing.

Interesting how wrist size can change the taste. Just bought Citizen NB6004-08E and finally found it to be the right size :)
Hey how is this model worn? is drawing a lot? This titan is hard?
🤔 I bought a Citizen titanium watch back in 1993 it has 7 functions, timer, stopwatch, second time zone etc. Tho a quartz watch all these functions are mechanical and it has a really small size of 35 mm. Okay it was expensive back than but my point is they can make smaller multifunction watches if they want to. And mine still works!
Have 2 citizens and have been very happy with them. Have held up well and a warranty issue was handled well despite happening during covid
Citizen choice of bernie
IMHO Seiko and Citizen are the top tier, with Casio just behind. And this despite that I no longer own a Citizen! (I have 4 Seikos, 3 Casios & 3 misc). Need to get a Citizen or two. Now that I have a Casio Oceanus, I absolutely love the eco-drive. Three of my Seikos are Titanium and that just fab. The way I am looking at watches now is this checklist: (1) Quartz (2) Sapphire (3) Titanium (4) Eco-drive.
I have an everyday eco drive and a Titanium automatic dressy Citizen. I live em both.
My only gripe is the lack of Mico adjustments.

Citizen Attesa AT8040-57 is a strong contender. 5 motors, All Ti. Sapphire. Solar/Atomic.

citizen skyhawk never dissapoint me since the day i bought it
Ben! Have you seen the NB1050? That may be worth taking a look at, it's a size, value, and style that seems to be within your preference. High-beat automatic with sapphire and duratect coating, under $500.
After checking the specs of the Citizen The Citizen AQ4030, I thought I might have chosen it over my Grand Seiko.
Citizen watches look very nice. They are right at the limit of my price range for a watch. I would like to have an Eco-drive watch.
Casio and Timex are good. Expensive watches usually don't keep good time compared to cheap digital.
My Citizen watch is 22 years old .. it loses a second a month .. with ordinal battery .. Citizen gives a 5 GT because unless you treat them bad are not going to need repairing.
Citizen is awesome, I’ll be getting a The Citizen / Citizen Chronomaster at some point. It’s the luxury part of the brand, but still.
It is. No difference 👍
The dial and style reminds me of an Aqua Terra. Seems like a great watch for the £216 I can see it on amazon for.

Citizen is better than Seiko & Casio, IMHO😊

Not to mention Citizen back their watches with a five year warranty. I love mine. Fantastic value for money.

One of the great things about Citizen is that they seem to have more sapphire crystals at lower prices than other companies, at least from what I've seen. That's key for someone looking for an affordable watch. I expect a watch case to get banged up over time but I want the crystal to be pristine.

Totally agree. I have the blue sunburst dial and it looks awesome on a tan leather strap.
Hilarious intro. That's how to start a vid:)
You can't put them in a low tier because you don't like the styling - the quality is there. I got a CQ in 1995 and it still runs great and looks chic.
Sure I can, it's my tier list after all. Not gonna wear something that I don't like the look of unless it serves a very niche purpose
@@BensWatchClub Yeah but you consider yourself a reviewer right? The point of a review is to be objective. You might not like the styling but someone who watches your review might like it. Plus if you don't like the styling of citizen watches this does not mean they are bad in terms of quallity. Also, in this video you say you don't like it because you have small wrist. How is that Citizen's problem? This is your problem. Learn what "review" is.
The point of reviewer is being objective? Good luck opening your own channel, being "objective" there and realising that tons of people disagree with you, even calling you names because of that . Try communicating for thousands of people and know the wild madness of the variety in human beings' thoughts, bro.
Besides, let people have opinions, man. This is not a science channel.
In terms of picking the most boring watch designs out there, you're in the top 3 watch reviewers doing this.
Why didn't you review something like the Citizen BJ7107-83E for 260 Euros (there's a cheaper option with silicone strap though), for example? Eco-Drive AND a second timezone AND a world time bezel.
Or a Citizen BM8476-23EE for 100 Euros?
Or a Zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg 8062-5 for 190-220 Euros (automatic) or the same design in quartz for 180-200 Euros (8042-5)?
Nah...his wrist is just too skinny for those models, he will not like it based on size alone
I got Citizen AT8185-71E. It's black so it's a neutral/safe color. One can't ever go wrong with black & it's stunning! Especially during the day.
Very satisfied with the purchase as I've never seen the design/layout in any other watch

Automatic, really nice turquoise lume, really light, and overall very nicely finished. I definitely think it could be worth looking into!! It's great on a NATO strap.
Agreed. I have one and have made hundreds of dives with it.
Bought a watch you really didnt like to prove your review in a beta fashion.......dont think I can take your channel seriously anymore.
I have like 9 citizen watches. reasonable price, good looking, and never have to worry about the battery.
