    I do concur with both of you in some ways. My late professor of drawing taught us about something he called "reduction". He made us push ourselves to the point where our drawings or paintings were somewhat "photorealistic", exhausting ourselves to the maximum. That made us discover (each student for ourselves) new ways to get the same results faster and with less effort "reducing" the path from A to B; drawing without measuring or perspective grids; without focusing on details which in a blink of an eye a normal person wouldn't even notice
    . He also had his "gods of art" which he constantly made us study: for portraits Hans Holbein Jr.; for lineweight Albrecht Dürer; for figure and gestures Peter Paul Rubens; for lighting Rembrandt; and for color Manet . He taught us to focus on good shapes, but not to forget anatomy and fine art form, comparing art to math saying that with practice we'll find better and easier ways to solve a problem.. Sadly he passed away when I was 2nd year, and our new professor didn't concur with the late one's teachings, neglecting anatomy too much for the sake of expression "and good shapes" and etc. (...as all of the other professors did) despite some of us trying to push the "teachings" forward. So I guess balancing out knowledge and "reduction" is the way to go.

  • @coryellis1877
    @coryellis1877 4 роки тому +6

    In my Psychology class this last term I was reading about how it's much easier for us to determine someone's emotion by mirroring their expression, and I've implemented that in my drawing.
    So when I want to make a character express a certain emotion I try to make the face that makes me feel like that. When it comes out good, I can look at the face I drew and it makes me feel that way, especially the happy ones.
    Also, with poses I try to make the pose or, like you said, touch myself. This really helps with drawing a realistic pose, but I definitely need to work on making my poses more dynamic and interesting.

    You are just saying exactly how I study xD
    Focusing too much on the details is a mistake we all make as beginners, but don't get confused, it is necessary to go through this, learn the details, because only then will we understand how to simplify later. Another important thing is that if you do not know good anatomy forget about giving good light and shadow in complex drawings, say with a certain level of realism.

    Everything you're saying is correct i think even realist artists pay too much attention to the structure and the details. Like getting a likeness for a portrait is important, but when you can't make what you're drawing or painting feel natural its going to suffer no matter how much it looks like the person. Artists run to learn anatomy because something feels off in their drawings and think the obvious answer is to study bodies to learn to draw them, but dont take the time to learn how each of the parts of the body flow in relation to each other. Doing quick life drawing poses can teach so much about gesture and the flow of the body, and in a minute you dont have the time to worry about those anatomical details. I think a lot of teachers and students over look the importance of gesture practice, even more so when the end goal is not a perfectly rendered human, and thats when the gesture and flow of poses is way more important because there is no obvious anatomy to hide the bits that are lacking in flow and shape design. PRACTICE GESTURE EVEN IF IT ISNT ACCURATE IT'LL FEEL BETTER THAN THE MUSCLES YOU THOUGHT WERE THERE

    At first i saw this man nothing more than a toxic guy for criticizing one's art using the word "Trash" but thats only in the thumbnail. After actually watching the video i start to realize, its really not that bad in fact he put some pretty good points. Most artists that do tutorials on the internet makes it harder for new and aspiring beginner, artists to do and learn art because of all of this mumbo jumbo you need to learn this and learn that, is just too much for an beginner artists to take in rather than using simple words and easy method to actually learn anatomy. I also get modernjames points on learning realism but you cant expect everyone to understand realism in same way.

    I have different books and some talk bout shape some about anatomy being important. Depends your art style. I think shapes get you there faster but the anatomy courses do help identifying important landmarks in my opinion. That's the conclusion I've gotten to. One can be stuck a year practicing anatomy and still not draw something showing progress. Animation books focus on shape a lot and some pin up books recommend learning animation and some type of anatomy to show action in your drawings. But shapes learning shapes and perspective to me is more important satisfying and fun. I am subbed to James.

    1:55 That right there isnt anatomically correct ethan you end up with a stif drawing because the the the anatomy underneath is wrong gesture is just there to help you understand how the human body isn't full of perpendiculars and parallel and also understand balancing
