Yeah that is brilliant. It was Sidney smith who challenged him to a duel. Napoleon said he was not worthy and would only duel if the English could retrieve Marlborough from his grave.
Ironically smith beat Napoelon, not at a duel, but at the siege of acre.
And then wellington became arguably better than malborough and won at battle fun times for him

@@robin_5099 Wellington has a similar record indeed. But for some reason is less respected by his enemies than Marlborough was. Maybe it's the cult of personality that surrounds Napoleon, and the fact that Napoleon, publicly at least, only ever derided Wellington. But that was Napoleon's way.
Of course, Wellington had a slight advantage in that he inherited a British army that had become known for hard fighting professionalism despite its size. Marlborough invented the image of the red coated menace, it could be argued, as the Brits weren't considered a major continental land threat since the days of the hundred years war, until Marlborough came along.
Personally I have nothing but love for them both as men and as generals.
Wellington was dismissed by Napoleon as a *sepoy general". He also messed up the night fight at Seringapatam, but was clearly in the same league as John Churchill.
@@alecblunden8615 I'm not sure how much he was responsible for the night attack failing considering that even today with all the modern technology we have night attacks are still tricky affairs especially over broken ground and under fire. He learned from the mistakes and was able to go onto the victory at Argaum. As for Napoleon calling him the "Sepoy General" This was the equivalent of the British calling Napoleon "Little Boney" it''s nothing but propaganda.

There was a street named after the general and the cigarettes are named after the street. So essentially, Marlboro cigarettes are named after the Duke of Marlborough.

There's a famous poem of Robert Southey called After Blenheim. We were taught that in class 10th. It's a great poem about the horrors of the war at Blenheim.

I grew up in the town of marlborough it is very cool to hear more about the man.
I went to school in Marlborough. Although my town is located in the Massachusetts commonwealth. *waves hello from across the pond*
I went to the same school as the Duke of Marlborough, i.e. St Paul's School. The military history society there was named the John Churchill Society.
Is it weird that I can no longer hear Simon say the word "heir" without finishing "and a spare" afterwards in my head. I don't know why, but I am just tickled by this phrase.

There is a pub called the Marlborough Arms, its spelt 'Marlborourough' outside because the sign painter said he was distracted by a ghost.
Well done! I would have added a few sentences about the Duc de Villars, the only French commander that was able to hold his own against Marlborough. Although Villars “lost” at Malplaquet, it became a Pyrrhic victory for Marlborough. And Villars was as colorful a figure as Eugene and Churchill.
British tactical phyrric win, French strategic win. But then Marlbrough beats that same marshal at the siege of bouchain. Marlborough’s siege record is as extraordinary as his battlefield masterpieces, his siege record was outstanding, he broke through some of the toughest fortifications in the world, built by genius engineers working for Louis XIV.
It’s a shame about Malplaquet because it wasn’t even a defeat, but a very costly win and that was enough for Britain to “pull the plug” (so to speak) on Churchill commanding forces in battle. Compare this to France and the french marshals who got humiliated many a time but always came back. Marlborough suffers one set back and Britain doesn’t care to let him continue (on a large operation)
Not many great generals aren’t allowed to continue after one set back. Think Napoleon or Fredrick the Great, it’s a shame marlrbough had so little room for error that, one phyrric win amongst a list of logistical masterpieces, tactical masterpieces and strategic siege warfare masterpieces, was enough to bring him down

Also my grandfather. He left home at the age of 17 to office join the US army(he had ran away from home many times before that). He was with Patton and Pershing when chasing down Pancho Via, fought on the Yang Zi basin alongside JFK against Chinese Warlords, was a MI officer that transported secret military documents, persuaded his way to aid in the planning of D-Day with Eisenhower, ..., after the war he became a US district judge.
He’s just a cool local historical figure. If you wouldn’t mind. We’ve ,his decedents-the Yunghans or Junghans family alongside his other decedents, have donated a lot of his stuff to various museums across Kansas. Or could you do one on one of my distant grandfathers; Zane Grey?

I am closely related to the John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough I have been doing quite a bit of research about him for a while now, he was a stunning and terrific leader in battle, I'd say him and Wellington are of similar skill one or the other is a bit better, what's interesting though is that I also have a French side so once my family was fighting each other only to eventually bring me into existence, interesting how this stuff works.

Very nice. The War of the Spanish Succession is the most difficult war in history to understand! "The First Churchills" chronicles most of this Marlborough history. The series is on UA-cam. Sarah Churchill is played by Susan Hampshire, a total fox.
