All I think of is that perfect song from horrible histories
Yes
god those songs where good
Quality comment 😂💯
thats not john palmers hand, thats DICK TURPINS he cried 🙄
That song was fantastic!
That Horrible Histories Dick Turpin song is a bloody classic!
This biographic extends on the song
That song showed up in my recommended videos after looking for the folk song! It's so perfect! I've always been a history nerd, so I would have watched the heck out of that show if it had been available in my area (I'm from the American south).
@@Luv2sing836 I've seen some US-wrote books called history smashers(?) that look like they're very much in the vein of the HH books, so I guess it's only a matter of time.
I remembered reading him in the books
@@Luv2sing836 you gotta find it! not only is it funny, there have only been like 7 errors of fact found in the whole series. even down to almost perfect period(s) costuming.
"Turpin shot a chicken on the streets in broad daylight," the biggest no no in Skyrim ran through my head instantly
Painful flashbacks.
Reminds me of John Wesley Hardin, who shot and killed a man for snoring. (I'm still amazed that Hardin became a _lawyer_ after he got out of prison!)
Instant death penalty lol love the game
Maybe he was drunk.
I had the exact same thought: "Don't kill the chickens" 😂
“It’s no fun hanging with highway men when you’re hanging from a rope”
Did anyone else learn about him from ‘Horrible Histories’ 😂?
🙋♀️
Yes. :)

Look up "Stand and Deliver" Adam and The Ants. That's where they got it from
@@jamieculp8291 I first heard of Dick Turpin as a child after visiting York dungeon museum, I've also been to his grave in York, he was a brutal man, but i suppose it was a brutal time.

Was no saint. You think life is one big antic, my profession is romantic, hate to be pedantic but it ain't
As a butcher down in Essex I was handy with a knife, had a sideline as a poacher, led a less than honest life
The notorious gang of Gregory liked my style & dedication
They signed me up & gave me a real robber’s education
We rampaged through the Essex farms,
we stole and robbed and fought but when the law came for us I escaped and they got caught.

I was no prince charming

I live in Heckington, and was brought up on the daring tales of Dick Turpin and how he frequented the Nags Head in the village. He's rarely mentioned now and has faded into local history

The Willie Nelson quotes are fun. Cool reference
The Highwaymen was more then just Willie Nelson... but still love it hah
That's a term for people that live on the road stealing from anyone they can and as you heard, murdering when they need to. It's a term as old as roads I suppose. Lol wow people really think willie Nelson made that up eh? Read a damn book folks...

Came here after having watched Good Omens. Great show and book btw. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett never disappoint.
Could you do a video on Alexander II of Russia? When most westerners look at Russian Tsars they mostly find the obvious ones: Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Cathrine the Great and Nicholas II, most (if not all) of which you have videos on, however Alexander II was incredibly important, perhaps being best known for liberating the serfs, earning the title, Tsar Liberator
Good point.
You should do
David Bowie: The Thin White Duke!
It would be a great next from your Freddy Mercury bio
I'd really like to see a Biographics video about Genrikh Yagoda or Lazar Kaganovich, Idel Jakobson or Salomon Morel or Józef Różański or Anatol Fejgin or Stefan Michnik.
I wonder why he hasn't, maybe he's afraid to draw attention to their ethnic backgrounds and the horrible crimes they commited.

00.13 "The value of these horses was 6 pounds and 20 shillings."
Seven pounds in other words. :P
If you stole more than 5 pounds then it was a hanging offence
Biographics should do a whole series pertaining to the infamous criminals of the 1600-1800s British isles. There are quite a few them and are as interesting as they are terrifying. This includes the semi legendary ones and others whose existence is disputed.
Horrible Histories made a song about him:
"Its no fun hanging with the highwaymen when you hanging from a rope."

What is the song called?
Thank you biographics crew for getting the Highwaymen’s song stuck in my head
The reason horse theft was a hanging offense wasn't because the people in the past were obsessed with the right to property.
It was actually because stealing a horse meant stranding someone in the wilderness with no supplies or transportation out, basically attempted murder. If you'd care to look it up in most legal systems "attempted" crimes are usually treated the same as successful ones because the defendant fully intended to complete what they started, and if let off easy are that much more encouraged to try again.
Good video 👍

Since the chapters of this video were titled with Willie Nelson's lines from The Highwaymen's "Highwayman" can we expect an episode of Biographics on Willie? He's led a very interesting life indeed and at 87 he's still living it. That said, the other members are also fascinating characters in their own right; in fact, I suggested Johnny Cash a few years back, plus Waylon Jennings had been one of Buddy Holly's backing musicians around the time of the fatal plane flight and worst-planned concert tour ever before becoming an icon himself, and I'm spewing that I couldn't have seen Kris Kristofferson when he came to my current hometown because like Willie he's a living legend.

8:58 Oh, so THAT’S where the phrase “flash in the pan” comes from! I always thought it was a cooking metaphor XD
@@sockington1 isn't it obvious that he didn't know that ? didn't you do reading comprehension at school ?
@@sockington1 That seems to be an overly-judgmental sentiment. I did go to school, and did well enough in both History and English. But it was the focus of neither class to teach me the in-depth origin of every idiom in the English language. There were more important things to learn about, like the deepening of the black/white racial divide that resulted from Bacon's Rebellion, or the duality of a man struggling to obtain power while also maintaining his humanity in Macbeth. There are many idioms in the English language that people use every day without fully realizing the origins of the expression, because the implied meaning of the phrase has been disconnected from it's original metaphorical imagery. For example, if I were to say "You're nuts!" you would readily understand that I was calling you crazy. But have you ever stopped to think about why we so readily connect nuts with craziness? Language and communication are complex, often self-contradictory, things, and no one person can be expected to know everything about them. It's rather rude to insult someone's intelligence and/or education simply because they learned something knew about their language that they did not know before.
Do more chix 👍🏻😘
