I’ve had both Sun and Suunto. I’ve only ever used the plastic bodied Suns though. They work well. I’ve actually lost a Suunto in the field. It must have come unclipped and fallen off. Other than that they work well. You need to check them though. I have one on a GB350 that is misaligned. North is south. I just ordered a couple of Polaris models. Thanks for the review!
Thank you for the comments. I think you’ve pointed out some very good points about these compasss. The fewer moving parts (ie mounting clips) the better. And verify the compass actually points north…(according to another accurate source other than a personal hunch). Thanks again, take care!
Very nice! The big sky in the big sky! Hope the hunting went well! In your neck of the woods a compass is really vital... Pardon the pun haha! I just noticed that is a semi auto and not a pump! Very nice! It appears that the accuracy is okay-ish but not as precise as might be needed if you are lost. That's when that Protrek of yours shines! The lume is excellent on these! I agree. Sliding is better than clipping. Something that slides is not under tension while the clip has to constantly apply force to remain on the strap. What if it gets a hard bump or counter depresses against your air or equipment. Marathon apparently builds better watches than compasses. I like the sun too! Goes really well with the SWC. Not too familiar with Polaris or Suunto although I know they are highly regarded. I have not had seperate compasses but I have had ABC watches the I wore and used. Nice kit that you use! Everything you need and nothing you dont. Have a great one Tim!
The slide on compass is an interesting option for non ABC watches and it's growing on me. The ProTrek is still my go-to but I do like the option for lower risk hunts/hikes to wear something other than the ProTrek. Thanks for you comments Johan. We have snow on the ground again...this time I think we're seeing 'real winter' arrive. Enjoy the warm weather of SA summer!
I have the Sunnto and it always on my wrist when I go camping ans hiking. It's such a part of my gear that it dictates which watch goes in the field with me. For hiking it's got to be the gray man and the G Shock stays at home. One thing Tim, you've for the Suunto on backwards in this video. There's an small moulded plastic arrow in the bezel which points in your direction of travel when you lift your wrist. Yours was always pointed to your body. Thread the compass the other way and you'll see what I mean. Great video!
The Suunto is a Fantastic option. Yeah, I intentionally orient the compass on the watch that way. In my mind, that arrow is the marker I use for landmarking. I get what you're saying though. Have a great week!
I have the Suunto Clipper and I ordered the Marathon and will compare. The Suunto is hard to find again. Don't haventhe Sun. The Clipper glows for hours. But stay tuned.
Outstanding video. I learned a few things. I have the Suunto & the Marathon. I am going to give the Polaris & the KanPas a try.
They’re worth a try. Thanks for watching.
Ever use the ones by maratac?
I haven’t. Any recommendations?

Hunting is a thing that lunatics do. There is no need to hunt anything. 😮
Suunto Clipper is my favorite and i have a Sangin Instruments and its just as good, low pro amd settles very quickly. Great info in the vid!
The Suunto is such a great company with really good products. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.
Great review
Thanks!
So it wasn’t clear what the order of preference is. Polaris > Suunto > Marathon > Sun?
The list you've typed is correct.
I have the Suunto Clipper and I ordered the Marathon and will compare. The Suunto is hard to find again. Don't haventhe Sun. The Clipper glows for hours. But stay tuned.
Sounds great! Looking forward to it.
I got some for my Casio
They all fit great on 22mm strap Casio especially the straps with notches on the inside.
