    FINALLY! I've watched at least a dozen videos on this topic and this is the first one that actually explained the features of the compass. Most videos praised the Suunto MC2, but they don't get into the nitty-gritty.
    Thank you very much. I hope you get a million subscribers and get rich in the process!

    Superb explanation of the MC2 compass features. I spent 30 years in the US Army, with much of it in the field or flying medevac helicopters and feel I know a thing or two about navigating with a map & compass. This video is simply outstanding and offers the clearest explanation of compass features & magnetic declination I've come across -- very well done! I would have liked to see more about using the clinometer, but this is hands-down a terrific video for everything else about this compass.

    Great compass I got one, my only concern was breaking it. it's not tough like the military issue compass but I found that it fits perfect in plastic soap dish case 1.99 from wall mart it's like it was made for it so with all the gear I carry in my ruck i don't worry about it getting broken if I drop my ruck out of vehicle in a hurry.

    Best video on the internet for the person who doesn't know anything like me. I'm about to order all of those books. I just love knowledge. Thanks so very much. No one on the internet that i've seen has a better video to teach someone how to get started in the navigation system. And believe me I'm a hard core researcher. I feel like I just hit the jackpot for getting started. Thanks so very much!!!

    Thanks for a great review video. The parts where you show the declination adjustment screw on the back and the tool that comes with the compass to use it, and where you point out all the luminescent parts on the front, were especially helpful to me. You can't see any of that very well, on the websites of retailers that offer to sell the compass. Semper Fi.

      One of the things that drives me nuts with some vids is they start off saying enter your bearing on the compass. Ok, but where did you get the bearing from. They skip over the whole part of computing the bearing from a map probably because they don't understand the concepts of True North vs Magnetic North and Declination.

  • @SnowyOwlPrepper
    @SnowyOwlPrepper 5 років тому +5

    Great job. I especially liked the details you gave on the parts of the Suunto. Note the graduations on the declination scale are the inclination scale too. Inclination would make a good topic. It can be useful in several areas to include avalanche, hillside orienteering, and geology to measure dip of rocks. Always set, never forget, the declination if you work or travel to another area.

    Excellent video! Camera quiality is great so one can see detials good. Audio quality is great. Speed of talking is perfect to understand what is discussed, explaination is to the point without any nonesense. Good speaking pauses between subjects to audience can follow. Perfect. Class example of a excellent tutorial video.
    Question: at 12:47, shouldn't the bearing be 63degree instead of 61? As the increments are in 2 degree's and it seems top index line is between the 1st and 2nd increments

    Great video. I wanted to learn about compasses and bought three makes. My suunto global mirror had a 2°+ 'deviation' from the get-go. Sent it back no problem.
    Luckily I had other compasses to compare, all brand new. Also read about compasses switching poles and the earth itself switching poles.
    I read about spinning ships and planes to correct 'deviation' because of all the metal to set their compasses. OMG! Thank God I only have to ride a subway.

    Great video and instruction.
    I might suggest though that the quality of this compass has gone downhill. I had the MC2 /D compass for about a 6 months but it recently developed a huge bubble. I called the warranty line and told the person I live in Tucson. After looking for 10 minuets he said that maybe I could try sending it to a place in Ogden Utah then they might be able to send it to Finland and I could get it back in 1 to 2 months. I asked for the address of the place in Utah. He looked for about 5 minutes and then told me I needed proof of purchase. I asked if having a compass was proof that I bought one but he said he needed the receipt which I didn't have.
    So after a 20 min call I was told to go kick rocks.
    Bad quality no warranty help. I will make sure to warn my friends to stay away from Suunto!

    Good video. Just got an mc-2, though here in most of Indiana you're usually only a half mile from grid laid out roads. I guess I might use it in hilly terrain in the parks to keep from going in circles, but I've been roaming those places for the better part of fifty years without a compass. I was a little surprised how much I forgot about orienteering since the army. Thanks for the declination link and refresher course. An inaccurate compass or knowing how to use it might be worse than none at all.

  • @olechuga2
    @olechuga2 6 років тому +14

    Sir, respectively, I will tell you that if you are using the SUUNTO Compass, as you used to use your lensatic compass, you are using the SUUNTO in a probable wrong way. You are supposed to use the lensatic compass as you did at the beginning of this video, that is, close to your facial cheek(s). However, to use a SUUNTO Compass, --> to take advantage of both of the "sights" of the SUUNTO, you need to take your azimuth bearings at arms' length, using the sights as in a rifle.
    Just trying to help you, I had the same erroneous notion as you showed, --> you from the Marine Corps, and I from my Army days.
    Otherwise, your video was excellent, and very informative.
    Thank you, Sir.
    Oscar

    Good choice .. I just ordered that model this morning to replace my old Silva compass which is a fine compass but the base plate does not have a 1:24000 or 1:62500 scale the closest scale that is workable is the 1:25000 ... As i use USGS Topo maps all the time and 95% of the time i use 7.5 min of angle topo which is 1:24000 scale .. So it was time to upgrade to a compass that speaks to the topo and GPS i'm using ..

    Maps are almost always already oriented with north being up on them, so generally it's better to go off of that than orienting the map yourself. If you know your local magnetic declination and have it set on your compass already, just have it pointing north on the map, figure how many degrees from north your heading is, turn your compass to that heading so that it is forward, and then rotate your body so that the magnetic arrow is in the doghouse/shed, and your bearing is directly ahead of you.

    Can you please tell me the exact model number of your suunto mc2 they all look different on different websites, different scales, some don't have glow ring, some have no mirror, some don't have the dog house. I have my lensatic compass from military but also always forget declination adjustment
