I like the old Rangers too. I had a 92 with the Vulcan engine. I wouldn't mind having one of the old 4 cylinders in mint condition ... IMO they ride better than the little Toyotas.

The 2RZ takes roughly 5.8 quarts of oil. Giving 10w-30 is fine in warm climate but the manual recommends 5w-30 for the occasional cold start for better cold oil flow. When you do fill it up to that amount, you will notice it goes over the full line on the dipstick, don't be afraid, that is normal, you can look it up on a lot of forums

If I didn’t know how much to put in,first place to look would be the owners manual. Second, I would run the engine to fill the filter and any nooks and crannies that hold oil, and then check it. After you’ve figured out the correct amount, write it on the valve cover. No guessing on the next change.

You should probably do more frequent oil changes on a high mileage motor. 3,000 miles is probably best. My 84 Camry is about to hit 400,000 and I do every 3k just like the original owner did.

If you live in the north or central US take a good look underneath of it the biggest problem with the tacos is frame rust. In the middle of swapping the frame on mine just got the truck back running and driving today still have to button up a few things and get the bed on. It’s a 2000 5 speed 4x4 v6 Trd off-road only has 151k hopefully she’ll last me a long time I have no worries that it won’t though just as long as rust doesn’t come back it is bad here in Kentucky. The rearend housing had some rust on it but couldn’t afford to replace it just gonna throw some undercoating in it or paint. Had to go to Alabama to get a good frame

There's a reasonable argument among experienced mechanics who've learned the hard way that you should absolutely not do that because you can inadvertently introduce foreign debris particles into the unfiltered side. It's why many manufacturers explicitly say to not do that. The filter isn't dry and the engine isn't un lubed once you refill the engine up with oil.
