I'm currently going through the lengthy process of inventorying, organizing and getting ready to sell (hopefully a lot of) my collection but I find it crazy ironic I've seen a ton of games I have all-in of (like Valeria Card Kingdoms) have a very timely (irony given the age of the game) review for me to listen to while I work. I now want to break it open, sleeve it and give it a go! Kingdom Rush is another on deck (given your recent video too). Also given your last comment (Space Base is in my top 5), I'm even more intrigued. TL:DR Keep up the solid reviews on games not necessarily brand new, it's helping us long time collector's solve some of the paradox of choice - if only a little :) Ty!
Great review for a great game! Replaced Space Base and Bad Company for me. Small suggestions: 1. Replace resource tracker with 'Unoffical Token Counter for Valeria' on mobile. We set our mobiles between our 5 and 6 cards. Much less fiddly, saves time. 2. When stacking Villager cards of the same type, stack to show bottom effects, instead of top digit. To us, it makes a smoother experience if/when many cards are stacked. Cheers!
For my gaming group the only problem with the base game has been that we usually end up with almost the same tableau safe for a few higher cost units and domains. But the engine pieces are usually identical for all 3 players. Not necessarily makes it less fun, just less variable.
Agree wholeheartedly! I got to play this right after it came out at a game cafe in Oxford while on a summer Europe trip and wanted to get it ever since. When the Oathsworn and big box campaign hit I dove in and got everything available and then purchased all the other content from DMG directly. My girls love it and so has almost everyone else I've introduced it to. In fact, my youngest lists it as her second favorite game of all time! Appreciate the review as always!
First video I watched of yours, from Valeria’s FB page. And I LOVE this game! It’s a game that CONSTANTLY gets put on the table within my family and friend groups (just played it last weekend). Your review was great and it really made me think about things. Like how all of the cards feel the same. Obviously they aren’t, but at times they do. When I play a game that I love, I always try to play it a little different to see if I can further my love for the game. Last weekend we did a “balls to the wall” where we doubled the amount of citizens, and 2 extra stacks of monsters and domains. I wanted to do that to fill a gap that I feel like this game has, but tbh afterwards. We decided that was not the way to play the game. Still unsure how to spice this game up. I have every expansion and almost all of the small packs (getting close). But I think you just put it greatly, it’s all just feels the same and so maybe it’s impossible to spice this game up bc it’s impossible. Still love the game and will continue to play it! Got it day one on kickstarter lol first game j bought on there too.
Agree that this is my favorite of the genre. Artwork and theme is amazing. And I love being flooded in resources and it becomes a game of who efficiently uses those resources to win.
Hey Alex, do you have any insight on any of the smaller mini expansions? I am assuming you have the kickstarter version and a lot were included, but was curious which ones you like or don't like. Thanks for the review.
This was one of the first tableau following games I played. Then I played Space Base, Catan, & Machi Koro after & found them all boring. I like Valeria the best because I can do something every single turn. I've had tons of turns in Machi Koro where I do nothing, and close to the same experience in Space Base. Also, trying to slot cards neatly under the board in Space Base is annoying.
I really appreciate the review of an older title. This one has always appealed to me but I have yet to play it. Is the system set up and in a way where I could just get the base game plus the co-op expansion (Darksworn)?

Just got into this one along with a few expansions. It is a pretty solid, fun game that I prefer a little over Space Base.
