    7 years later and this video is still helping those of us that are new and confused about setups for turning inside Fusion 360. I already had a model I made in Solidworks and could not get Fusion to create tool paths correctly following the built in setup dialog boxes. I remade the model in Fusion the same way your tutorial depicts and was successful creating the tool paths the first time! 😁

    Excellent tutorial, straight to the point, how to get a job from a profile to turning code without being bogged down in trivia. I can see improvements and how I'd go about it ... really appreciate you didn't dick around at all and provided enough info to go tackle actual jobs ... the extra info about extending the job past the profile etc are magic ... thanks mate!

    I came because i had trouble on how to layout a cam process in 360, i wasn't expecting your take on modeling to give me new ideas on how to work out a model. Great Video

    Awesome!!! I'll be doing my first cnc Lathe project in two weeks and the only significant difference from your part to mine is that I need to add threads to the back end of the part. My TL-1 lathe should be here next week.

    I agree with TK, one of the best so far! As a mentioned F360 n00b, I learned so much in little time at a very good pace. Great explanations for why or why not you check a box.
    I've making this video my template for my first attempt to go from CAD>CAM>Tormach Lathe. Until now I've been using the conversational which have been great for simple turning/threading.

    GREAT video! This video touches on just about every 360 question I have! One question. How to you set that up for manual tool changes? I use gang and QCTP.

      Tormach. I get the gang tool setup, on the machine side (via Brad's video) but for the CAM to post, would I need to add my own M1 to change tools or does 360 facilitate that?

    So if i didnt want a hole in the center, just an outside profile, i suppose i would just sketch the ends down to the center line? Probably a dumb question. I'll try it. Thank you for starting from a sketch, and not a pre existing file. Very important to me, as other CAMs handle this differently.

    I have a request. Would you be able to do a similar turning CAM for a ball type profile. Like a door knob shape? I'd love to see how you setup a left hand cutter for the back side radius; or would you use a groove tool instead?

    Very simple looking software. Thanks for posting this video. I am looking to download it soon. I have one question. When you was doing the sketch, you had drawn it with the steps beginning at the origin and the big radius on the back but when you started programming it the part was flipped with the radius up front? Why did it do that? Isn't normally the origin the front of the part? That was the only part that confused me

      That's a good point. It was probably just because that's how it was drawn on the piece of paper when it was handed to me by the prospect who wanted the demo. I try to turn demos into instructional content for this channel when appropriate.

    Is there a way to create a program that repeats this process automatically. For example I want to repeat this process 24 times (Loading in a 24in stick of material and don't want to manually start the machine program every time)

    what happens if the back diameter is smaller than the front radius then selecting the inner radius wont work. any help would be appreciated thanks this was a great video. version 2.0.11415 (2020) here

    Very helpful! but I have a newbie question.. how do I know what post prosessor to choose for my machine or rather who gives me that information on what post to use, machine manufacturer or is it autodesk?, I'm just getting into this cam stuff so I don't know how it works. I've used solidworks, autocad and invertor in the past and now I'm learning Fusion 360 cam but this postprocessing deal is a gray area. Thanks!

      Hi Sumocat, what machine do you have? In reality it's a combination of your Machine's Controller, and how the machine builder has configured that control, which leads to which post you should use. As a baseline, you generally start with a post that's built for your controller, then you modify it from there to suit your specific machine.

      I work with Okuma LT10 twin turret, OSP100L control, Okuma LB300 twin spindle, Mazak quickturn 250II MS, twin spindle. Then we also have one older Takisawa Ts25 with Fanuc Ot. We just got the Mazak and it's pretty easy to program in Mazatrol but it would be nice to try the fusion cam on it. Since I posted that question I've already learnt more about cam systems, and I'm able to use it on our fanuc control with some editing of the code. But I need twin spindle machine with 2x C axis, live tools and a bar feeder to make the parts I need, so Mazak or the LT10 is the only way. Thanks for your response!

    Same time you draw that figure. i allready would write program to cnc by hand. mayby im just freak of nature :) why post prosessor not use G70-G76. that would make you program code 100x smaller AND easier change LOL

      Yeah you might be able to, but this is a simple profile for the benefit of this tutorial. However once the design changes, or if you have template models and toolpaths setup for repeats of similar parts, then integrated CAM will beat your hand code speed every time. Canned turning cycles can't be simulated in the CAM software, because every machine will run the cycle differently. Even identical machines can run them differently. So they are quite dangerous to use in CAM software. Also code length is a non issue with modern controllers or if you are DNC drip feeding the code via RS232. Regarding on the speed this took.... I did it at a pace that was suitable for people to learn, not at a pace a competent & well setup programmer could do it. Thank you for your comment.

    I cannot get Fusion 360 to create turning profile tool paths. It seems that every tool is invalid? It doesn't need to be this difficult!

      You can't use a grooving tool for a profile operation, and vise versa. And there are some limitations relating to tool orientation. I know I'm replying far too late here... so did you get it figured out in the end?

      Yes, you can in fact use a grooving tool for a profiling operation. The developers at Fusion 360 don't understand how this works on a machine so getting it to work was the opposite of what the labels are offered within the software. I would explain it, but honestly it was so difficult that I cannot remember how to make it work.

      If you want to use a grooving tool for profiling, you use the Groove toolpath and choose Sideways with partial stepdown from the Grooving pattern drop-down on the passes tab. Like most things, it's easy once you know how. People have different perspectives on things, so while one person might make one decision about how to present information, the next person might do the opposite.... ultimately I agree with you, that they could make this clearer and I think they will in time, they just have other more important things to implement at the moment.
