  • This week, we replace the trunk handle vacuum element in the W140 S-Class with a new unit. This turned out not to be the issue with the trunk handle popping out randomly, but it is still a good item to have refreshed. Next step in diagnosis: the dreaded under-seat pump.

Nice video very helpful. Do you plan by any chance to make a video about the vacuum pump and how to diagnose non opening front air vents ? Thanks

I have a 1995 S420. Glad to see your video in case I end up changing out the trunk handle unit in the future. Thank you. An odd thing my handle does is pop out quick if the trunk button is pushed but if you use the remote trunk release on the dash the handle doesn't pop out till you get all the way to the back of the car.

Mine acts the same way with the delay, unless it's freshly shut off. I'm sure it's just a weak/leaking vacuum system - not something I intend to delve into during summer here in Arizona...too hot. Thanks for watching!

I just (8/6/19) got a "tested good" used soft shut pump (the in trunk one) Putting in tomorrow as the system had stopped working. Hoping it solves several mysteries. Keep up the videos & Thanks again!

@@timbod3367 The pump that operates the handle and the door locks is a different one, under the rear seat. Hopefully the new soft shut one helps solve some of your issues, though!

Yep, you got it.. I hate that big one. So bad. The new soft shut pump however solved sooo much.

I have a 1995 S320, and my TRUNK soft close was NOT working. What ended up being the fix was replacing the (tiny) actuator that releases the latch pawl on the latch assembly. It was a very inexpensive part, and now the soft close works every time. Also something to check and make sure of, is that you have enough vacuum and pressure coming from the pump in the first place. If the pump itself is worn out, just replace the electric motor inside the unit with a similar new one. This made a great deal of difference for me.

Thanks for this video! It's sad it' didn't help with latch coming out randomly. Did you fix the issue? I have similar problem - when I close my trunk the latch is being sucked in but later within a minute it comes out. Meanwhile trunk is being closed. Idk why it happens. If it's a leak somewhere it probably will be a PITA to find out where it is.

My issue is an air leak, either a slight one with my driver's side door lock actuator or with the air pump itself. The pump is a common issue. Still not fixed, but I use my trunk often enough now that it's a non-issue. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus I agree. Finding leaks may be pretty time consuming job. Good luck! I hope to start working on my Benz sometime in May...

You should be able to open with the key - if not, no way in without a locksmith. Thanks for watching!

The handle still comes out after multiple door locks/unlocks, it's a pump problem in my case. Still to be fixed. Thanks for watching!
