In the early 2000s, I bought a mug similar in size and shape of Mystery Mug 9. I use it as a meal mug for stew, soup, spaghetti, salad, etc. especially when it's a nice day and I can sit outside to eat my lunch. Being able to hold the mug while I eat eliminates balancing a bowl or plate on my lap. I also use it as a dip container for parties.
The one that has the rounded bottom and big sort of pedestal base (that you didn’t like!) reminds me of the sort of thing you might drink mulled wine or spiced cider out of. I can visualise it with bunches of grapes moulding attached to it, a sort of Bacchus vibe?
This gave me some lovely memories of going over to our neighbours for Irish coffee on Christmas morning. I was pleased as all get out when I was old enough to partake. This was the shape of the mugs that we used.
Soup mugs! As a non coffee/tea drinker, I use all my mugs for soup. The oversized number 9 would be great with a soup theme design. Number 1 would also be a good shape. 😊
I can’t help but think that even with the pattern being a bit worn, the ‘tooled leather mug’ would still sell quite well with those who love shabby chic, especially if done in pastel coloured glazes or by steering into the worn look. Though as soon as you opened the mould I couldn’t help but think that it’d look perfect with just a plain white glaze.
I was wondering whether you could use some tools to emphasise the pattern a bit more? By that I mean carve the background to create shadows and indent the curves of certain parts of the design to bring them out a bit more (much like a leatherworker would). It takes longer, but the effect would be incredible and gives more scope for painting the design.
You may want to know that the design of the "leather" mug is an Anglo Saxon pattern that goes back to the 9th Century. I like the goblet being a Medieval reenactor. You could cut the handle off and make it a pure goblet. My daughter has Cerebral Palsy and as a result has problems with her hand grip. But she is able to use goblet glasses. She can grip the stem and have control of the cup. If you ever saw the movie The Jester you could make the Flagon with the Dragon and Chalice from the Palace. The little pig cups could be done with different breeds of pigs. I love the bull mug.
It also reminds me of a lot of the designs you would see on Western style things like clothing and accessories. The reason I say that is that my dad wore/had a lot of Western stuff and in particular a few pairs of leather cowboy boots and a silver cigarette case he had were similar to the designs on the mug iirc. I wonder if Western motif/fashion was inspired by the Anglo Saxon style patterns? :0
I actually love the one with the foot lol. You often see that style in glass here in Europe for serving Irish Coffee or hot chocolate. Also loved the adorable little petal tea cup. Would love to see it in tulip colours. Or!! Or!! You could paint it like a water lily and put it on the lily pad you had a couple of months back!!
The American folk hero Paul Bunyan had a blue ox named Babe, which is what I thought of when I saw that bull mug! There's an old Disney short about Paul Bunyan and Babe that was one of my favorites as a kid. You could paint the bull mug in shades of blue as an unexpected design! I think a midnight blue version with gold luster stars on it would also be a super cool reference to the constellation Taurus as well!
The dancing couple's mug looks so interesting to me! 😊 The horse equipment on the wall isn't a horse shoe but a shoulder/neck "girdle" to pull things, like a plow or other machinery for agriculture ((you put the horse's or ox's head through and rest it on their shoulders/base of the neck)). 😊
It's called a horse collar, actually, & if you look the term up on wikipedia, the very first photo looks much like what's on the mug. Oxen use yokes, but the design of a yoke would choke a horse. So the horse collar was a huge technological breakthrough once it was invented. Also, my guess is the dancing figures are one couple of a multiple-couple square dance! Square dancing is a TON of fun, and if you look up 'Modern Western Square Dance' on wikipedia you can find out more about it too. Cheers from California, and thanks so much for your videos, Shelby -- they're both relaxing to watch, and very artistically inspiring for me!
Hi, the mugs are so much fun. The horse shoe on the Barn Dance mug is actually a horse collar, part of a driving harness. A The 12th mug looks like a goblet. The sort of mug they would serve with a mulled wine in at an outdoor winter market. I'm off to my art group where I get to use clay, 2 hrs of heaven. Thanks for your great videos. All the best from 🏴
When I saw that big coffee mug the first thing I thought of was painting Starry Night on it. It is such a perfect canvas to paint some of Van Gogh's sunflowers on too.
Mug number 12 is something I would see at a Renaissance fair. I've actually bought a couple of ceramic mugs from just like them from the fair closet to me that I go to every year.
The bull could be a punk rocker/emo look? And the footed mug made me think of Irish coffee's or even an iced coffee. Can't wait to see how you decorate/paint them 😊
With the right teapot you could make a full little fairy tea set with that petal cup. Also on that western mug that U shaped thing isn't a horse shoe. IDK the name but I believe it goes over the horse's head like a collar when you're hooking them up to a wagon.
Lean into the wear on the leather patterned mug and paint it to look like beautiful, well worn leather. Well aged leather gets more beautiful over the years!
The mug with people dancing, they are square dancing, a type of American folk dance. Often Times Square dancing was done on a barn (or idealized as taking place in a barn) and thus called a barn dance. Everything about that mug reminds me of
Idea, Take one of the mugs that reminds you of a tree stump, maybe add some grass and flowers around the bottom or paint them, Then add a little faux door and put a little surprise creature in side of the mug. This should be a fun seriesm looking forward to watching,🐭
I love listening to people talk about the thing they are passionate about. Hearing you talk about these mugs and molds shows how much you love what you do. 🩷
I love love love the tiny fairy teacup, picturing it with pink or lilac petals. The giant tea cup mug would be a great soup mug on a cozy winter day. And the bull was soooo cute and would make a gorgeous small planter as well as a mug. can't wait to see what you do with them all. I also think you need to make a matching pair of the goblets (with the stand bases) and decorate them as if they were metal.
Mold #15 - the Bull is stunning!! Mold #9 looks like a soup mug. I am no hungry. Mold #3 reminds me of a huge version of a US Navy mug. That style is iconic and the finish was a plain dove white and while it sounds plain, it evokes feelings of warm memories of years ago. I love that one!
Honestly I love the mug with a stand. If you leave it on or take the handle off it gives an awesome medieval goblet/medieval times glass and I love it. I would totally buy that in a heart beat!
When I was a kid, we used to go to paint-your-own-pieces for summer camps!! It was so much fun. We also did some "pint and paint" nights, and at least two hen nights at those places. So many possibilities!! I have such a good feeling about this next move for you
A set of those barn dancer mugs with the same design but different clothing colour themes would be so to die for! Green, red, blue and orange, set of four. The bull mugs painted realistically with gold ring - they’d fly out the door I reckon! Just an idea: Maybe you could cast some for a special event item in your Pottage? Sell as a ticketed event - charge a good amount and do an appearance. People WILL pay for an event like this and include postage costs of having their finished fired piece sent to them.
Old plaster molds with blistering can be repaired pretty easily! A more liquidy plaster can be scraped into the little holes. It obviously wont hold forever but it does give old molds a bit more life! The big mug is very hobbity, i concur. It would be adorable with a your floral illustrations on it ❤️
I found your more in-depth critique of each mug very interesting! It's very cool to see what you look for in pieces, from an aesthetic point of view and from a technical point of view
The dancing couple are square dancing. The thing you called a horse shoe is a collar that goes over the head of the animal and rests on its neck. I think the handle is supposed to be 'rustic' but I agree, I don't care for it either. The second cup that has the delicate shape reminds me of a tulip. Your idea of a garden cafe is spot on! The mug with the foot looks very much like the mugs sold for Irish coffee. And I absolutely ADORE the bull mag at the end!!!!!
The oversize mug reminds me of the soup mugs you used to get with recipes on the side, I think they were 70's or 80's, not sure because my mum still has them and still uses them. The one with the separate foot, reminds me of a Harry Potter mug, my son would love it.
My mom definitely made a ton of that "tooled leather" mug in the 80s. ☺️ I love these videos, so many memories hanging out in ceramics studios my mom worked at in the 80s. ☺️❤️
The leather mug: Question/thoughts- 2-4 years ago you posted a video where you showed how to make your own mold. Is there any way you can: 1. Take the leather mug when its still scrap-able and recarve out the hills and valleys that are getting too worn. 2. Make a mold of the recarved mug. Is there a company out there that you can contact to help you professionally remold it or remold it yourself. - the mug is so precious and unique I hope your able to find a solution.
I love mugs 1 & 12, I have a lot of gothy, spooky, witchy mugs and these shapes would be perfect for alternative designs. The twelfth mug with the foot would made a gorgeous gothic goblet mug 😁
That square dancing mug old look so neat if you could find some of those paper transfers that have plaid and paisley patterns… you could go ham decorating their clothes in a very traditional “Tex-Mex”/Americana Cowboy style. OR you could go off-book and lean into a more 1950’s poodle skirt retro jive-dancing aesthetic. The second mug makes me think of tulips… painting leaves onto it and turning it into a tulip would be a very romantic look. Thanks for sharing… it’s always so fun to see the things you discover and then to see how you express your creativity when painting them.
I loved seeing this set of mystery mugs revealed! Can't wait to see them all gussied up(painted)!! You bless my heart, Shelby. So I'm praying blessings your way.
#12 is the mug I’ve been waiting to see. In the mid 70s Duncan had that mug. I worked at a ceramic store as a pourer. I must have poured and assembled 10 of those a day! I came to hate that style😂. But they are great for Irish coffee
I feel like you could use the foot part of the footed mold to attach it to so many other things. Like the trinket dishes and plates to make them have a pedestal!
I would love to see you paint some of the mugs show casing the things you love about your hometown Ballarat. Think they would be perfect mug for your pottery customers to drink from. 🌻🙂
I use those oversized mugs for cereal and ice cream. I live in an absurdly tiny place, so I often eat sitting on the ground with my food in my lap. So mugs are way easier than bowls to hold and not spill in that situation. The oversized ones tend to be shallower, too, so that helps with not having your knuckles clank against the rim (which I haaaate) when you're using a spoon to eat out of them.
I like the mug 12..... my grandmother had a glass set like that, and we were served hot cocoa in them when we visited. I love those and have a set myself.
The giant mug looks a lot like my favorite soup mug. They are so much nicer for heating up soup in the microwave than a regular bowl. I like when you have a little matching plate to hold a grilled cheese sandwich. The fairy teacup was my favorite (i hope it will have pretty pinks and greens) although the seventies leather design was gorgeous! The mug with the pedestal bottom actually looks very cool with the pedestal. It looks like something you'd use in a Renaissance Faire for the lords and ladies, or at a SCA event! The cow mug made me squeal. It has the cutest ears! Coloring it maybe to be like those really cute fluffy Scottish cows
Oh Nr. 12. I imagine a dragon going around from the bottom to the top. The tail around the bottom part and the body on the mug part. A few flames decorating the mug.
The bull mug is cool. #9 is definitely a soup mug. Cut the handle off the wine bottle mug and it could be a great glass or vase. I hope you find another leather mug mould in excellent condition. The tiny teacup will be very popular with the paint-your-own crowd.
The dancers in the US are called “Square Dancers”. Often done at barn dances, but can also be done at a more professional level. My parents belonged to a Square Dance club when I was in High School, so I ended up taking the year of lessons and joined as well. Very geeky thing to do, but those of us kids who went around to dances with our parents had a blast together. My mom and I sewed all our own dresses or skirts with the fluffy crinolines underneath.
This video was so fun. I like your enthusiasm for each mug's potential. Just for your reference, on mug 4 the item you called a horse shoe is really a horse collar. It is part on the harnes used to hook the horse to anything you want them to pull. Thanks you for all the work you do and for taking us along on the adventure.
Mug 9 was made in the 90s, which is exactly when lattes in huge bowl-shaped mugs was a huge thing. We bought one for my dad for his morning coffee and he loved it - prior to owning it, he would prepare his coffee by mixing sugar and black coffee in a regular-sized 6oz mug 3x and pouring it into a small mixing bowl and drinking out of that, and finishing by savouring a fourth mug in the actual coffee cup. It was the weirdest ritual, but he just didn't want to stop and interrupt his coffee intake to make a new cup of coffee every time; a true coffee fiend. The latte cup solved all his morning coffee problems. 😂
I ‘d love to see the bull kept the natural bisque with a brown wash to bring out the details . Maybe paint the eyes if needed . Then use the gold luster on the nose ring.
I am obsessed with the tooled leather mug! I really hope you find another mold or you can get one made like it. Also where is your dress from!? It’s incredible
Also I don't know how practical it would be but it would be interesting to see the little Koala you attach to the thimbles attached to the handle of a mug. And for the tall mug with the pedestal foot I immediately thought of Rapunzel's tower. The handle reminded me of a viney branch climbing up the tower. On that note actually. Not this particular pedestal mug but a pedestal mug in general would be great for adding attachments around the pedestal (like the koala) so you get the fun detail of attachments without them getting in the way of your hands
While the pig mug is adorable, as soon as I saw that tail it made me wish I had a mug like it but with a sweet ringtail possum. And if it were up to me, I'd HAVE to paint the billy mug to look like a tin of milo.
The mug with the base is a hot chocolate mug that is like the one from the movie the Santa Claus and you should try changing the handle on the dancing mug to a wheel shape! You should do a galaxy pig!! Like the mug is a black speckled background and the pig is galaxy inspired with the mix of bules and purples and the corn could be a space ship! 😊
Yes same, I love mine for my soups
Same. Best for soup or mug cakes
Sounds like i need one . I spill a lot of food most of the time ,because i can only eat on my couch
The one that has the rounded bottom and big sort of pedestal base (that you didn’t like!) reminds me of the sort of thing you might drink mulled wine or spiced cider out of. I can visualise it with bunches of grapes moulding attached to it, a sort of Bacchus vibe?
Same!
Number 12 reminds me of the kind of fancy mug that Irish coffee is often served in.
It asks for alcohol, indeed
This gave me some lovely memories of going over to our neighbours for Irish coffee on Christmas morning. I was pleased as all get out when I was old enough to partake. This was the shape of the mugs that we used.
Oooh! Yes. I can see that.
I thought it also looked a bit like some of the pewter goblets I see for sale at Renaissance Faires.
It’s got that basic banquet hall, just brought out the desserts at the wedding look
I would call it a goblet
Soup mugs! As a non coffee/tea drinker, I use all my mugs for soup. The oversized number 9 would be great with a soup theme design. Number 1 would also be a good shape. 😊
Soup tastes so much better in a mug then it does on a bowl or plate.😊
You don't drink coffee or tea? Just raw doggin life like an absolute boss 💪
My first though on that oversized one was soup mug!
Lol wish.I would have saw this post before I said same thing. 😂 Id love to one with mushroom for mushroom soup or painted maters for tomato soup.
Some cute veggies painted on the soup mug would be fantastic!
Agreed!!!
Is there a way to restore the mold or recast it? Especially since it is such a cool design?
Maybe cream
I was wondering whether you could use some tools to emphasise the pattern a bit more?
By that I mean carve the background to create shadows and indent the curves of certain parts of the design to bring them out a bit more (much like a leatherworker would).
It takes longer, but the effect would be incredible and gives more scope for painting the design.
Is there any way to repair a worn mold?

Oh Gosh, I hope Shelby has seen (or does see) The Jester. :)
She could still use the leather mug, and really paint it like distressed leather. Just lean into the shabbiness, you know?
@@denisesmelley8546with the brew that is true! 😂 🍻
I actually love the one with the foot lol. You often see that style in glass here in Europe for serving Irish Coffee or hot chocolate. Also loved the adorable little petal tea cup. YESSSSS! ❤️🌷🪷
Yes!! With one of the little butterflies and bees added on the cup and saucer. So fairy!
oh I love the lilypad idea!
The combo would be lovely with your flower & butterfly embellishments, or A TINY FROG!
oh my god yes absolutely the lilypad idea is so good!! please do that
The American folk hero Paul Bunyan had a blue ox named Babe, which is what I thought of when I saw that bull mug! There's an old Disney short about Paul Bunyan and Babe that was one of my favorites as a kid. You could paint the bull mug in shades of blue as an unexpected design! It's called a 'hames', at least here in the U.S. I used them when I drove a stagecoach (!!) for a couple of years!
It's a horse collar
It is for pulling and is called a horse collar.
They are definitely at a western hoe down / square dancing event in the local barn.
It's called a horse collar, actually, & if you look the term up on wikipedia, the very first photo looks much like what's on the mug. Oxen use yokes, but the design of a yoke would choke a horse. Add a flower or a butterfly to the bull mug to make Ferdinand the Bull. Such a sweet old kids book.
Hi, the mugs are so much fun.
The horse shoe on the Barn Dance mug is actually a horse collar, part of a driving harness.
A
The 12th mug looks like a goblet. The sort of mug they would serve with a mulled wine in at an outdoor winter market.
I'm off to my art group where I get to use clay, 2 hrs of heaven. Thanks for your great videos.
All the best from 🏴
9:56 Here I am, drinking coffee, when you unveil the exact mug I'm drinking out of.
When I saw that big coffee mug the first thing I thought of was painting Starry Night on it. It is such a perfect canvas to paint some of Van Gogh's sunflowers on too.
Mug number 12 is something I would see at a Renaissance fair. I've actually bought a couple of ceramic mugs from just like them from the fair closet to me that I go to every year.
yes!! Goblet, not mug!!
Number 7, reminds me the “mugs” in Lego sets.
Number 9 is perfect for soups.
The bull could be a punk rocker/emo look?
And the footed mug made me think of Irish coffee's or even an iced coffee.
Can't wait to see how you decorate/paint them 😊
I like irish coffee/ iced coffee thought
The Irish coffee was my first thought too!
It made me think of Ferdinand 😂♥️
Mug nine is a soup mug!
With the right teapot you could make a full little fairy tea set with that petal cup. Also on that western mug that U shaped thing isn't a horse shoe. IDK the name but I believe it goes over the horse's head like a collar when you're hooking them up to a wagon.

Yes! The handle looks like a vine.

Wish I lived near you! In America! I wish you all the best in your "Pottage" adventure! How wonderful! 😊❤
There are shops like that in America, I love painting pottery at my local paint your own pottery shop!
Idea, Take one of the mugs that reminds you of a tree stump, maybe add some grass and flowers around the bottom or paint them, Then add a little faux door and put a little surprise creature in side of the mug. This should be a fun seriesm looking forward to watching,🐭
I LOVE this idea! Make a series of fairy door mugs!
That footed mug is actually so cool, it looks like a cross between a goblet and a tankard!!
I think the fairy tea cup would be gorgeous with a May Gibbs theme. 😊
YES YES YES!!!!!!!
Its more than likely got a matching saucer somewhere, Its unsual to see a tea cup without one.
@@FaenumVena I can't believe I forgot about that one! It's stunning perfect for a tea party. Each in a different pastel.💜
Mug number 12 makes me want an Irish Coffee ☘️ I love your introspective view on these mugs.
I also think you need to make a matching pair of the goblets (with the stand bases) and decorate them as if they were metal.
No. 9 would be perfect for soup. It also reminds me of the big mugs in Luke’s Diner on Gilmore Girls. Love it!
That pig mug is the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen! I love a good pig on a mug!
The Goblet Mug is fantastic 😂 I need one to feel that **fanciness** when I work from home 😂😂😂
number 3 and 7 would be great candidates for the rabbit handles from the smash/pass series.
Oh, yes. I could see the rabbit handles on those. 🐰🐰🐰
Number 3 reminds me of a beer stein and you mentioning having a lid on it, confirmed that.
Oh I would love to see a hypno-bull 🌈😍
I reckon you should expand on just the toad/frog spongeholder & do a hypno collection!
Honestly I love the mug with a stand. If you leave it on or take the handle off it gives an awesome medieval goblet/medieval times glass and I love it. I would totally buy that in a heart beat!
I like #12 because it reminds me of the glass mugs we used for irish coffees. Can see that one used for the same reason. Cheers.

The stemmed mug looks like an Irish Coffee Mug
I agree
OMG. I MUST HAVE that dancing couple mug. The handle is intended to look rustic like rough-cut timber.
The leather mug: Question/thoughts- 2-4 years ago you posted a video where you showed how to make your own mold. Is there any way you can:

I was thinking the same thing! Re-cast the mug, clean it up, and the make a new mould of it. 🤞
Pedestal mugs are perfect for Irish coffee or any specialty coffee.
I love mugs 1 & 12, I have a lot of gothy, spooky, witchy mugs and these shapes would be perfect for alternative designs. The twelfth mug with the foot would made a gorgeous gothic goblet mug 😁
Loved all these mugs. With the bull mug you could add flowers or butterflies to it.
Bulls and daisies sound good to me!
Mug 13 screams 1980s so loudly I can hear it all the way to Canada. And yet, I like it too. Shockingly.
I like it, too.
It reminds me of a coffee shop, diner mug. The old diners with 8oz coffees.
#3 is awesome. It's like an oversized Diner Mug! I'm here for it.

I love all old molds it's like getting a vintage mug without the worry of lead!!!
I loved seeing this set of mystery mugs revealed! Can't wait to see them all gussied up(painted)!! You bless my heart, Shelby. So I'm praying blessings your way.
#13 gives me a very Modern 1960’s style. Makes me think of the Jetson’s or some of that other “Our Future is in Space” feel!
Love the oversized mug!! Attach a couple sunflowers to it and paint a scene of sky, clouds and sunflower fields!
Once again your wardrobe is to die for!! I LOVE your style. I always look forward to watching your videos. Love the mugs!!
Agreed! I think Shelby should copy her beautiful clothes onto these plain mugs. Just change outfit to inspire the next mug!

The "coffee table" mug is *just* like the ones from the TV show FRIENDS!!!
The big mug would be a really fun planter. Either with a drainage hole in the bottom or as a cover pot!
#12 with the pedestal is the style we use for Baileys and creek at the bar here in the US. Basically coffee with Irish whisky.
Love the tooled leather one #5, great video!
Classic Magpie and/or Cookaborough. Perfect bird partners for a Sunday morning cup of coffee/tea in the garden.
Kookaburra. They’re sooo cute❣️
Number 12 would be cute decorated as different flowers. Like the pedestal would be the stem and the mug would be the flower, a tulip, a rose, etc 😊
#3 should be called the classic, that is absolutely iconic, worldwide.
Oh Nr. 12. I imagine a dragon going around from the bottom to the top. The tail around the bottom part and the body on the mug part. A few flames decorating the mug.
Mug two has a very good drinking shape. Would love it with a sunflower design
The oversized mug would be neat with butterflies attached to it and flowers and ferns painted in the background.
the one with the foot would be cute painting the "balls" like doughnuts.
I feel like the pig and the barn dancers need to be a set! 😆 So cute
Idea: remove handles on bigger mugs. Holes in bottom… paint them up and BEAUTIFUL planters!
A blank mug would be something I would grab so I can paint my own designs so some blanks would be good too.
I love the tooled leather mug
Number nine is begging to be a soup mug! I also truly love that bull mug. It'd be cute painted like the highland cows
Number twelve reminds me of Irish coffee mugs.
Number 12 looks like a goblet. Something you would find at a king´s table during the middle ages. I think that is the vibe you should go for.
You use it for like Irish creams and fancy cocktails. Hot toddies warm wines. Eggnog. That's where the cup with the stem.
I love how verbally descriptive you are!
No internet for over two weeks! Missed your videos so much! Thank you for your content! Appreciate you so much! 😊❤
I love the idea of doing a bold psychedelic palette for the leather pattern mug.
I like #12 mug-, I’ve seen that for cocoa, mocha, or Irish coffee.
I would like to have that nr 12 mug. Really loved that one, just with a goldengreen glaze on it.
I agree with you about 14 - really weird having the handle go higher than the mug itself, but I LOVE the idea of painting it like a tin!
#12 is giving Halloween vibes. It's giving elf princess/prince. It's giving fantasy.
I'm so in love with this dress!
I love the bull mug:3 I would like to see it in cute pink and classic brown versions
