    We planted 3 elderberry bushes of the "Ranch" variety. We purchased them from an Oklahoma farm. 360 Farms grows Oklahoma native elderberries. They have over 7000 plants in production. Next year I will need to process them so this video has been very helpful. 👍🙏❤😊

    If the tiny stems are cooked, heated they aren't poison anymore! I like the freezer method when I have room in the freezer.. I just filled mine with local meat and peaches💃Love your videos... Gonna make jelly and a the leftover juice to bottle!

    Very timely! I recently harvested elderberries for the first time (from my neighbor's pasture ditch!) and have a ton in my freezer ready to shake off the stems. Last fall I scored a steam juicer at the Habitat re-store for $3.00 and can't wait to use it. I did learn the hard way to wait until the berries are fully ripe because picking off the green ones is a total chore. We bought some elderberry syrup at the Shindig from Broussard Homestead that was so good it didn't last a minute, so I'm eager to make my own. Thanks!

    This is my first year harvesting elderberries and I took forever de-steming them about half way through the season I started to freeze them. I am freezing my berries so I can make small batches of syrup through winter. I also put arrowroot in mine to thicken it as well as add other beneficial properties. Thank you for the video.

I hope you don't mind me stepping in to help out, but if you go to the video that Andrea produced on May 23, 2019 called: WHY YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR FREE ELDERBERRIES NOW, Andrea shows you not only the elderberry bush, but also the flowers. Great video Andrea. I love the information you share. I have a quick question after watching this. You said the stems and such are toxic. What do you do with those when you are done with them? Are they safe to compost? Should you add them to your burn trash? And what do you do with the juice mixture once you strain it? I hate wasting anything and love to know the best way of disposing of things.

    It appears that most of the dried Elderberries ive seen for sale online are imported from European countries and are then probably the European variety of Elderberry but most people in America that are growing their own berries are growing the American varieties , so im wondering if the lighter color juice is all because maybe the American varieties of berries are causing this difference.

    Hi there. I am up to my eyeballs in elderberries. I have made syrup for years, but find the sorting so tedious. Do you have green berries on your clusters? How concerned are you about having a few green berries in with the ripe ones? I've heard they are toxic. How meticulous are you when sorting those out?

    • @VWFamilyFarm
      @VWFamilyFarm  5 років тому +1

      I try and wait until the cluster is fully ripe so there are no green ones. I think they might float in water though. Me personally I would try to get them out but I wouldn't stress about it too much if it's just a couple.

      VW Family Farm thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I'm processing them today. I'm picking out as many green ones as I can. But I'm like you. Man oh man is THAT tedious. If I wait until the cluster is fully ripe, the birds beat me to them! You're a peach!

      I would just leave out the cloves.

    They are so tiny, don't those berries fall through dehydrator trays?

      Hope you don't mind me stepping in to help with an answer... Most dehydrators (not all) have a supplementary insert that is solid. The insert is used for making purée items (such as applesauce or blueberry) into "fruit leather". Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 8/12/2019.
