      I have ADHD too and i've come up with a theory that why alot of balisong flippers seem to have it is because we're drawn into this stuff due to how satisfying and downright therapeutic flipping can be, I view it kind of like in a similar way like I do with fidget spinners but these are just way better and more addictive lmao

    I'm a psychology student, I have a job where I take care of kids with ASD and ADHD. My brother has it and I have it. I'm a fan and have watched all of your videos while getting into flipping and judging by just your videos I was absolutely confident you had ADHD. Brandon is also my radar, although getting tested is a personal choice. Although ADHD is technically defined as a "mental illness" or a disorder it's really not a "bad thing" or a "handicap". ADHD just isn't always optimal or practical for the modern world - e.g. sitting down at a desk for hours. It can have it's advantages and it's disadvantages, like hyperfocus on a project that's a dopamin wellspring and loss of focus on something you "should" do but has lost its natural dopamin drive - i.e. you now get easily distracted. I work as a pedagogue and sometimes do presentations for my colleagues on how ADHD works, how to handle kids with it and I also have a very practical understanding of ADHD for grownups. If you ever want advice or information on your diagnosis feel free to reach out.

      I do think It's cool that neuro divergent people tend to attract each other even if none of them is diagnosed. So if brandon is ND that would be a pretty funny example of that.

    • @Nik-Dybdahl
      @Nik-Dybdahl 3 роки тому +2

      @@objectifiedslime7891 I swear that almost seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Most of my friends either have the diagnosis or definitely have it and haven't bothered getting tested lol. It was also a phenomenon that occured over the summer at my job where we brought a bunch of the kids together for a weeks camping vacation. All the ADHD kids easily found each other. It was great except they merged like a destructive tumble weed of havoc rolling around camp haha. Kept me and few other adults very busy 😂

      Im genuinely curious about how did u find out that he had adhd by watching his videos

    • @Nik-Dybdahl
      @Nik-Dybdahl 3 роки тому +4

      @@chypher420 well it's impossible to know for sure from just videos and past the age of 12 it actually becomes harder to get the diagnosis since most adults "mature" out obvious criteria. Meaning as an adult you'll have to meet more of the DSM-5 criteria to get the diagnosis. The diagnosis converges into 3 sub categories of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention (distraction). These occur due to a dopamin deficiency, so the mind in actuality is trying to entertain or engage itself. If something isn't engaging enough the mind will search for something else. This can look like distraction or speeding from one thing to the next (hyperactivity), or impulsively being attracted by something the mind does find engaging. Kids generally have a hard time with executive functions (e.g. reducing impulsive decisions or not stay up all night playing video games instead of sleeping /studying). For people with ADHD that becomes harder, for kids it's almost impossible and they'll need support. But grownups tend to adaptively learn to self regulate with age. So it's harder to spot in grownups.
      But how I can tell is different, no person with ADHD is the same but their is a "personality" commonality (which is s more subjective way of understanding a diagnosis - i.e. like a personality). Will obviously has an impressive drive, he's creative, funny and caring, but he does sometimes exhibit a "scattered focus". Some of this can be chalked up to editing and portraying a silly character, but sometimes it seems to become very genuine. Regular people go from A to B to C. But ADHD individuals tend to go from A to Z to G and then to B. Take the 2nd squid industries video where Lucas is showing Will around. Will did a very nice job but you can tell he slightly struggles with not getting distracted or wanting to move on to the next thing prematurely - e.g. Lucas is about to show Will something. Will stops him because Will sees a Lazer engraver, which Lucas actually had mentioned earlier would be in the assembly room. It seems to be a very honest moment. The interview comes off as "high tempo" which could be a creative choice ("keep it fast so we can keep the audience engaged") but Will is a fairly energetic guy and I find it likely that the pace is more due to who Will is, than a conscious interview choice.
      But I have a lot of personal experience with ADHD. Growing up with it, seeing it in my brother and friends, seeing it in the kids I work with, multiple courses on child behavior / ADHD, studying to become a psychologist at Uni, has made me somewhat aware of exactly what ADHD can look like.
      In my opinion it's not a disability or "illness" but more like a trait that has some visible behavioral commonality across people. But it's like a spectrum, we probably all exhibit some ADHD, but the people who actually get the diagnosis are the ones who exhibit it more than the average. We can all get distracted, have a hard time with focus, self regulation, reducing impulsivity, but for people with ADHD it's more than just being lazy or lacking the self discipline. As an adult an ADHD diagnosis shouldn't ever be an excuse or crutch, it's just that being self aware and understanding yourself can help out tremendously. People tend to view a diagnosis as something almost external instead of understanding it as something that's integrated. For example you can't blame something on a diagnosis because the diagnosis is you, it's not just "a part of you" it's literally woven into every aspect of you. In the case of ADHD the mind just works a little differently. It might actually have been an evolutionary advantage to have some people in a tribe who were more impulsive or had a different approach to a problem. It's just not "optimal" in today's desk society.
      Studies also show people with ADHD commonly are exceptionally gifted at things like archery - reducing the world to one very small target. Meaning despite popular belief about ADHD and focus, they actually can conjure an impressive focus and "lock on" mentality. They are good planers but only if it goes according to their head. Interruption or deviations can make them "crash". They also have a very hard time switching from one thing to the next, even if that thing is something attractive - I.e. disadvantages of hyperfocus.
      A huge problem is that in school it's generally mistaken for disobedience (hell on wheels kids) and that can have long term consequences for future mental health. If 90% of a kids interaction with adults is them correcting or disciplining them that'll completely destroy their confidence and self efficacy. In worst case they'll grow up believing they can't do anything right, so why bother. ADHD then becomes a disability because their simply isn't a societal tolerance for it. However if they grow up with the necessary support they need there really isn't a disability aspect to it.
      The understanding of all of this doesn't just make me look for "symptoms" but vaguely more "types" of people. If that makes sense.
      Sorry for the longer answer.

Something I knew about myself for certain is that I physically fidget with my hands a TON. Getting into Bailsongs and flipping was partially to help with this stimming in a way that could be healthy and productive. I have ADD and was diagnosed when I was in 3rd grade, was prescribed Adderall from the beginning, it really fucked my life up, couldn't eat with the normal kids, couldn't sleep easily, but was always tired, it's literally meth in a pill, and it's just not a good thing. I eventually went against my mom in I think either 7th or 8th grade, when I finally refused to take it. School was really really hard for me, both with or without the Adderall, it was almost impossible for me to pay attention, I got put into special Ed when I was in 7th grade, and luckily the teachers from then on out were really really nice and good at dealing with my hyper-ness. I also graduated 3 months early once I found a program that worked for me (which was online school, doing one class at a time so I wasn't constantly overwhelmed by everything).. I really think ADD and ADHD aren't anything that makes a person less than, or bad at all... so what we are a little hyper and we have a little harder trouble focusing on stuff for a extended periods of time, doesn't mean we need to be sedated with a heavy narcotic, there is other meds out there if you really want to go the med route to combat it, but my ADD is me, and my friends love me for being the impulsive spaz that I am, so don't ever let anyone tell you that because of your ADD or ADHD you should take Adderall, granted it is your choice but the side effects and long term addictive traits that will definitely build up over extended periods of use aren't worth the benefits it brings. That is my opinion, and I'm not shaming anyone for taking what their doctor gives them but, make sure you're at least somewhat educated about it. ❤️✌🏻 Love you Will, your content brings me joy. Thank you for being so transparent and awesome.

    Hey Will, fellow fucky-wucky brain here, I find myself experiencing a lot of the things you're describing. However instead of ADHD, I have diagnosed OCD, always knew I had it, didn't need a doctor to tell me, plus with the stigma around OCD I always feared what the doctor would say because I've had people in my life tell me I didn't have it, or it was all in my head. I was very wrong, I talked to my doctor and he in fact took it very seriously, now I am on medication, and he provided resources outside of mediation as well, and it helps, it really does. That being said, to anyone struggling, talk to a doctor, they'll take what you're saying seriously and you will get the help that you need. There is no reason you should be suffering alone, there are plenty of resources out there to help. Mental health ain't no joke people. And thank you for talking openly about this, I'm sure it helped a lot more people than you think.
    Also congrats on the Cool Guy Syndrome.

Like you the medication didn’t really help me too much as a kid. I find for myself a good mixture of high iron based and starchy foods helps me concentrate best. Personally, I find it hard to focus on things such as school work for example, during the school year it’s difficult for me to focus on my classwork, and homework. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to even remember to do certain everyday things. I hate having ADHD though. I was medicated in 5th grade but the medication made me feel sick so I stopped taking it. However, sometimes I do hyper focus on somethings, like at night I find myself cleaning my room.

    I got tested recently but ended up not having it. But I still have some of the symptoms. Also how do you get diagnosed at the age of 5.

    I saw that you follow a lot of Parkour athletes, do you do Parkour or like watching the movement? I personally really enjoyed doing Parkour so that's crazy that you would also be interested in it.

    I just discovered that I have ADHD and I struggle with a lot of the same things you talked about. It's also a little ironic how you were talking about doing a task and then watching a video and then coming back to the task because that is exactly what I'm doing right now. Also, Do you think that there are more people with ADHD who flip?

      I wish we made enough money to do that, but we're not nearly there yet in terms of youtube revenue! We only just recently got to the point where Brandon and I can both kinda pay rent off of youtube.
      There is hope in the future though!
