What is the best way to keep reptiles in 2021? If you said Bioactive Enclosure Setups, you'd be right. In my opinion anyway, and in the view of many other reptile keepers the best way to keep your snake or lizard or even amphibian might just be in a bioactive enclosure! Personally I keep many species of reptiles inside of these natural looking and natural feeling enclosures complete with plants and isopods and springtails and all that goes along with keeping your reptile enclosure alive! Crested geckos might be the most common species to keep this way along with gargoyle geckos, chahoua geckos and even Leachianus geckos. These are the largest geckos in the world but have very similar care to their other New Caledonia gecko cousins. Another great species to keep bioactivly are spadefoot toads. These are one of the most underrated species ever to be kept in the herp hobby! These guys use spades on their feet to help them dig and burrow into the substrate. They will for sure eat your springtails and isopods so be sure to have a healthy group of them in there! Rhino Rat Snakes also make great inhabitants of bioactive enclosures! These slender intermediate level snakes are amazingly cool to look at, beautiful colubrids. Another great snake option for these living vivariums are garter snakes. Garter snakes and ribbon snakes will take full advantage of the enclosure, it's plants and even water area if you provide. The enrichment of a Bio Active enclosure really can not be beat!

I have two pet spade foot toads and they are fun to watch eat and explore
I signed up for it! Thank you!
You said $14.99/month in video once. Just make sure everyone knows its per year and worth it!
Absolutely would love a paladarium list :)
Coming soon!
@@WickensWickedReptiles really 😆🥳
Yeah better lol
Yes
Dart frog, fire bellied newt, uhhh caiman lizard, chinese/australian Dragon And idk what 5th one would be, maybe some sort of turtle
"Dinosaurs are all dead"
*Clint from Clint's reptiles screaming in the distance*
I had the same thought when he said that lmao
Lol. I was thinking that. He threw in the birds quickly
Wicken: You. Should care more. About. Spadefoot Toad.
Me, visibly sweating: yes chef, sorry chef
they deserve love
"Dinosaurs aren't real anymore."
Me: *shocked Pikachu face*
hahhahaaa
Birds exist though
@@dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668 ok mr know it all
@@dino_theseawing they're right
Also, thinking you should do a top 5 amphibian list and ruin it with a reptile!
"Dinosaurs aren't real anymore"
Me, shoving my talking rainbow velociraptor's beak out of my face for the upteenth time: "Say what?"
I have a corn snake, and I’ve been laughed out of forums for having him in the enclosure I do. It’s not bioactive, but it’s naturalistic with loads of plants and vines, branches, logs, tunnels, and his tanks split into 2 levels. I know he’s not arboreal or a jungle snake, but he LOVES his enclosure. He’s always out and investigating, moving and up and down the 2 levels using the branches, he burrows in his substrate and I’ve never seen him as active as he is since giving him this set up.
awesome!
I just got my yearling corn snake a 4'x18"x18" and I can't wait to build it up to give her plenty to explore and climb on! Have you had good luck with the plants not getting uprooted? Or do you have the plants in the plastic containers to protect the roots like I've seen some people do? Just looking for suggestions :)
@Victoria - Not sure why anyone would laugh at you for taking the time to provide your snake with an enriching environment. Sounds like a sweet setup to me. Despite not technically being considered “arboreal” there are many species that will absolutely take advantage of the elevation. I’m sure he loves the fact you ignored that label in his case and give him the opportunity to explore. Much respect to you,
Everybody's an expert on the internet. Your email is a PhD.
@@ic3p1ck_ sorry I should have mentioned they were fake plants. I’d love to do real ones but he’s 6ft and loves climbing so would totally trash them!
His tank is 6ft wide, 6ft high, and 3ft deep which i know is overkill, and it cost a fortune to decorate something that big, but it’s been so worth it to see him so active.
I know people say snakes can’t be “happy” technically, but to me he seems like a happy snake. He uses every inch of his enclosure now, always exploring and hanging off branches. To me if he didn’t like it he would hidden away in one hide all the time and grumpy to handle or just not be thriving like he is.
Good luck with your build and your girl. They’re such awesome snakes as a pet 💗
Dart frogs are perfect for bioactive enclosures ^^
I totally agree
So are newts and salamanders
That’s cool you named him after a legend, I wish he was still here.
same!
Something I did think you kinda missed the mark on was explaining what bioactivity is. It’s not just bugs that make it bioactive. You also need plants, lead litter wood, and some would argue fungus to make a true bioactive enclosure. Bioactivity is essentially creating a mini ecosystem in a confined space.
Agreed. Without plants especially nitrates/nitrites and ammonia will build up and the substrate still needs changing every 8-12 months or it will become a toxic wasteground. For people who struggle with understanding this, it helps to read up on the nitrogen cycle.
@@pyrpyr5Wolf i'm going to set up an enclosure like that soon and while i have a bunch of snake plants and that vine-y ficus thingy that grows like 15m long to plant in there, what are some more plants you would recommend? Does moss count too?
@@sillyjellyfish2421 What animal are you building for? Humid tropical/temperate habitat? Moss sort of counts, but usually only uptakes very small amount of nutrients and most mosses are difficult to keep enough alive they do much. Depending on the species reptile/amphibian there are lots of different easy to grow plant options.
@@pyrpyr5Wolf ball python. So all that usual stuff i see in terraria like in serpa design videos and similar wouldn't really do. He needs something sturdy that wouldn't die just after one day
@@sillyjellyfish2421 yes you'll need sturdy plants for sure! The snake plant and Ficus pumila are perfect. Also spider plant, pothos and things like mondo grass or even just Carex grass species do well with trampling and will grow readily in a bp setup. Do remember especially if you get grass you'll need a strong led light. 6500k cold white led strips work of you can't get a hold of jungle dawn light bars. I use grass in my hognose setup and it survives all his digging(he has a burrow directly underneath the Carex testaceous. Best of luck with it, your snake will love it I'm sure!
Great video! Those sure were some adorable garter snakes! I'd love to see a paludarium list (I'm building one for my lake chapala garters soon). More amphibian stuff would be awesome too!
I'm building a paladarium for my mossy frogs. I have it built in my head. Let's see if it comes out as planned 😂
Garter snakes...lol 🐍 🤣🤣🤣 Wait actually, I may have a perfect enclosure being vacated soon 🤔 Paludarium with a waterfall, who would do such a thing...I think Adam should do that list as well!
@@caseysilva6919 I just did one for our Fire-bellied Toads. I think it came out pretty nice and just like what I envisioned every night between 2 and 4:00am...lol. Good luck with your build!!!
@@caseysilva6919 there is a video about that on Clint’s Reptiles
I absolutely love rhino rat snakes. So glad they got mentioned! They're on my list of dream snakes to add to my collection one day.
Give us that paludarium list for sure. Thank you for all the great work and always look forward to the videos on Monday or Thursday, Monday lol
You got it!
Every time you say something to Diamond about not biting you, it reminds me of my beardie, Twitch, biting me. He gets super excited when it's time to eat and strikes his food dish before I can even get it in the cage. He got me good once!
Absolutely loved this video!! I agree, crested geckos do fantastic in bioactive; I have mine set up in a ridiculously large bioactive enclosure and he uses every inch of it! But now I have to go research #3..... Absolutely.
All the New Caledonian geckos are OUTSTANDING bio active critters
There are two other new Caledonian geckos that you forgot to include: chameleon geckos and sarasinorum geckos. Saras are the closest relatives to cresties, and can also hybridized with them. They have pretty much identical care, but saras are a bit longer, can grow back their tail, and in my opinion, have much prettier patterning. Chameleon geckos are essentially micro chewies. They only grow to about 4-5 inches, and hang out on sticks in the open all day. They are super cute and wonderful to keep. Both of these species would also thrive in bioactive tanks!
both dope but so SO rare
Gave me a smile on a really bad day. Thanks for always having great content!!
Yes! Paladarium list please....great video today love bioactive!
Will do!!
Thanks, now I've fallen in love with rhino rat snakes. How have I never heard of these before?
they are so cool eh!
Love this video! I actually have a chahoua/crested hybrid...he's about 1.5 years and boy is he absolutely STUNNING, particularly when fired up. He has an amazing personality and once I can get him out of his enclosure he's not too bad with handling. Sometimes he'll go straight to the top of my head when my hair is in a bun and just chill there haha. I have all of the stuff to build him a custom background and convert his enclosure to bioactive. I did splurge on the BioDude for substrate and some other cool stuff. Now I just need to work up the nerve to do the background. I'm afraid to screw it up...especially since he has a nice expensive PVC enclosure. Nothing but the best for my little dude 💚🦎💚 Now I'm off to eat Ramen noodles for lunch...jk I have enough leftover to splurge for bologna 😉🤣
This is the exact question I've been looking for an answer to!!! Couldn't find anyone else asking it online
hope it helps!
I'm definitely interested in a paludarium list. Especially if it has anything about Timors or Tree Monitors.
Diamond: Tries to eat Adam's ear every single video
Adam: Puts Diamond on his shoulder right next to his ear every single video
never said I was smart haha
i love how he interrupts himself to correct himself then switch back to telling us info in 7:18
gotta check yourself sometimes
Love the video mate ☺️
When I kept crested, chahoua, and leaches, got them all about 12/13 years ago. I kept my leachie and chahoua bioactive. Not many people were keeping that way, in the circle I was in. But i wanted to give it a try. I didn’t do it nearly as good as we do today, but I’m so happy to see how it’s progressed. I got back into the hobby after having to sell my collection when I got divorced almost 7 years ago. So excited to be back in. Animal related items are so much easier to get and holy crap how the crested world has changed. I mean. They aren’t even Rhacs anymore 😅.
Your videos are great and informative. I really enjoy them!
6:55 "Diamond... where yah going bud?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love bioactive tanks! All my frog tanks are set up that way. Also I love your channel, it’s great to have this as one of many resources to recommend to customers that come to my pet store.
You’re awesome!!! My new favorite channel!!! 🙋🏻♀️🙌🤗💜💜💜

Another Awesome video mate 👍👌
Thanks 👍
Yes to the palladium list and examples, pretty please! I'm planning my own garter colony and I'd love some ideas on how to go about it.
Loving the videos as always! Thank you for putting out such quality information. I know ball pythons are popular and there are many videos on them, but it would be great to have another video on them. I know you did one this year but maybe a show and tell of yours? Or maybe a live stream with a convo on them. From a fan of stand point. Idk. Just an idea. Thanks again!
thanks for watching, Monday's video (On Patreon now) has BPs in it!
Love all of your videos Adam, please do a mourning gecko guide! I just got 3 for my 25g bioactive and they are so underrated

I really enjoy your videos,.
thankss o much!
I was thinking of finding this exact video topic yesterday and got distracted. So glad to see it now 😍
The huge problem with bioactives is that SO many people are saying it's a "takes care of itself enclosure"! SO many people believe that because they were told so, even good keepers have given that idea (trying to convince people to convert). I like the honest approach. Tell them what to expect and that it's not ideal for all animals. Saying, you can, does not mean you should! You can have a more humid, natural enclosure that might require more specialized care depending on how far you go with it. Certain plants need higher uv lighting, it might not work for your animal. You will need to clean it up, you just might not need to deep clean as much. Also bugs, if you want a ecosystem that might not always stay contained where you want them, they are fun to watch. There's more but I just wish more people would be honest about bioactive.
Thank you for highlighting Rhino Rats! I have them and they’re wonderful! Babies are feisty, the adult is chill, gorgeous and active all day. (Usually posing).
By the way, the two youngest were very difficult to go on rodents. It took assist feeding for several weeks. For them to readily eat a pinky, the pinkie had to be in the water bowl!
very interesting, i saw your channel, i subscribed to your channel and am following, the video is great, thank you for taking the time to make the video,❤️❤️😍😍😍😍😍👍👍👍
thanks so much for supporting!
Great video! I'm planting my bioactive tomorrow for our first reptile, a Crestie...My daughter and I are having a blast with this process.
That is awesome!
All arboreal reptiles that need high humidity. I have my Boyd's Forest Dragon, Australian leaftail geckos in bioactive set ups. Will have my leachie in one as well

I LOVE my new caledonia geckos!! My chahoua is so calm and sweet. Great video Adam thanks!!
I'm so glad I found your channel. I searched care videos for spadefoots after getting one and came across you and have been binge watching since lol
Welcome aboard!
I've been catching and getting bit by garter snakes my whole life like literally my whole life and I had no idea they were venomous. Very interesting. Thank you for that little tidbit fact. Good thing I'm not a toad
Heyo love your vids. Was wondering if you could do a care vid of water snakes. I saw them at my local park, and thought they looked cool. Was wondering if they make good pets.
Ah you hit me in the feels with talking about Steve Irwin and Jack Hanna! I just found Marty Stouffer on roku! Love this video! I would love to set up a bioactive tank for my corn snake. Also I'm looking up spade foot toads!
wicked!
I watched the video on spadefoot toads and now love them too
Omg the Speaking Moistly meme yes!
Also thank you for such an education video!!
Any time!
YES!! Do a paludarium list!!! :D just did my second vivarium build and next time I've gotta go bigger!! :D
About having a WIP for over a year - me and my wall painting know that pain. Great video, thank you for all the info
Love your videos, about a month ago I finally got my very own dream .... maybe not as impressive as some of your collection but I"m so thrilled to have an African House Snake. Thanks for being so awesome
That is awesome! SO underrated!
Howdy. I built a bio active for my dumpy frog and have cubaris isopods as a clean up crew. I also got a orthoporus millipede tank with with freighing beetles as clean up. Love the channel
I need, and I cannot stress this enough, a paludarium video.
coming!
Would love another venomous snakes and their alternatives.
Love the vids btw
Leopard geckos are also great for bioactive enclosures! Powder orange isopods and mealworms and their beetles and springtails as long as a water dish is provided make good clean up crew for a arid bio.
Hello! Love your videos. please make a paliderium video!
Coming soon!
So entertaining 😆 How high were you filming this video? 🤣 In the very beginning I thought to myself "he seems excessively chipper in this one..." Then watched as the channel became Wickens Wicked Tangents 😂 it cracks me up how you're all over the place sometimes.
I may or may not have watched Grandma's Boy right after shooting this
a top 5 reptiles for paladariums would be great! love your content brother! 😃👍
Of course you did a video on my favorite thing... bioactive setups. First, you NEVER ruin the list with amphibians. I have success with bioactive setups from the hottest for my uromastyx, to the most humid for my dart frogs. I stand behind The BioDude for all of his different substrates based on the species. As for the clean-up crew, a temperate springtail culture works well for all environments. The dwarf white and dwarf purple work well in frog and gecko enclosures. The Floria mix, powder orange or powder blue work well in drier environments. I do have 15 different species of isopods, but sometimes the larger ones end up being dinner before they can do their jobs. Well, I rambled on enough. Great job and yes would love to see a paladarium build. That is what I will be building for my mossy frogs.
All my substrates are BioDude as well 😁 And about those isopods...those little buggers are super addictive!
@@bobbiec2829 agreed!!!!
I wish we had access to the Bio-Dude here in Canada. Sadly I have to watch what he does and find similar fixes here.
@@rickcroney1286 I've heard there's a lot of homemade mixes that are comparable...usually from people who think the BioDude is overpriced. I totally get wanting to save the money but I'm new to bioactive and really don't want to screw it up. Plus it's a time saver. You all do seem to have a lot more access to Arcadia products (substrates, supplements, etc.) up in Canada from what I've seen in some other videos. I can't find any of those products in the US. I do have their UVB lights though 🙂 Hopefully one day you can get BioDude products.
That new tegu you got would love a bio active setup , my tegu loves it and the clean up crew completely takes down a adult tegu mess besides the urea in two days
wow that's amazing!
I love how northern blue tongues are considered common over there (I’m Australian) here they need an advanced license and are more rare than the others (eastern being the most common)
wow eh!
I was fascinated by the rhino rat snakes at the Arlington NARBC just last weekend, they were so gorgeous and unique! One of those encounters that truly makes you want to branch off into a keeping a new species.
since amphibians are included, id say the best thing to put in a bioactive is dart frogs! some species like the powder blue, powder gray, nikita, citronella, cobalt, azureus, and Patricias are super easy to keep, super easy to breed, can buy them as tadpoles and watch them morph which is fun, especially for kids. i make their own fruit fly cultures so i dont rlly need to keep buying their food. as someone who has had freshwater fish for almost 2 decades, they are similar but easier than fish and super entertaining to watch. the highlight of your day will be feeding them i guarantee.
Hello great video information a
Thanks for visiting!!
Thank you.
My 6th grade teacher had a huge bioactive blue tongue skink enclosure in the classroom it was so cool
that's so awesome!
Please do a palladium video AND maybe a land only video, since this is both. ? Love your beardie. 💖
YESSSSS THANK U BRO 🖖🙏
Wooo!!! Love the Gargs!!!!!!!! And New Caledonia species, should feature them more!
Thanks!
Thank you so much
Also I never knew how similar Gargoyle geckos are to Cresties (never felt the need to look them up). So pretty!!!
Please do a Paludarium Video, or better still, several!! Best amphibians, reptiles, plants, cohab, how to feed, how to structure, everything 😊
This entire video was just Adam roasting himself for his own word choice and dude I relate
I had some baby garters that where not eating that good fell behind the rest of the group . I planted the tank with bio substrate and they are eating much better . I love the bio setups.
great to hear!
I had a gargoyle gecko but she hates kids and i have 2 that want to be involved with the reptiles so i swapped the gargoyle gecko with a crested gecko and the kids can handle her as much as they want to as she so calm and loveable, now my old gargoyle gecko has become a mom and is used to educate kids about reptiles
The little clips throughout the video make it so funny-
You could do a paludarium snake list, a lizard list, and a frog list. Also, a paludarium cohabitation list.
Love it ^^
Thanks 😆
🥺 If it counts, I watched your spadefoot toad video.
Love your chewies. 😍 They're high up on my wish list.
Great video, though I think most frogs could have been lumped in with the spadefoot toads. Dart frogs, whites tree frogs, Amazon Milk Frogs, etc.
Another great video!! I love making bio active enclosures! I wish I could do it for a living sometimes. If you’ve got any advice on selling bio active enclosures then please let me know! Thanks again for another video!
thanks for watching!
Would love to see a paladarium video. I've been confused about what exactly they are, and what you could keep in them. I think that would be awesome, Adam... I don't know if I spelled it correctly, but you will know what I mean...lol
I have a northern blue tongue skink. Took him to the vet for his annual check up, which I don't do anymore by the way, and she kept trying to tell me that he is overweight and that he is an eastern. He is not an eastern, he is the most typical looking northern you have ever seen in your life. And he is not overweight. The vet just doesn't know a darn thing about them.
Hey, Adam. Awesome video as usual. I think I figured out what type of animal Mushu is... I have a feeling that it rhymes... Mushu the +++u.
find out next monday ;)
