A friend owned one that he bought new as a company car. The "only" problem they experienced with the automobile was vandalism. Even on old Silver Shadow is a huge target for hateful types.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow has nothing to do with rock n'roll. First of all a Shadow II didn't cost £35,000 in 1977. In May '77 they were £22,809. The Shadow came out in 1965 and was meant to be an owner/driver's car. In early '77 the Shadow II arrived and improved upon that.
There's nothing dubious about the hydraulic system of which only a few parts were licensed from Citroen. Nothing was bought from them and it has nothing to do with the ride quality, just the braking, which is superb and of course that it raises/lowers the rear end when it's loaded.
The problems with cheap Silver Shadows are a lack of proper service and maintenance, that's not the cars fault. Too many old Shadows are simply not looked after as RR intended them to be. If you want a 'good' one you'll probably need to pay more than £10,000 and really nice ones that have been cared for properly are nearer £20,000.
Shadows are now coming into their own and prices are finally moving up. There is a divide between the parts cars and the collector cars. The Shadows in excellent condition and regularly used are very reliable cars and will last forever whereas garage queens will be costly to maintain. Maintenance on a very good example is fine as long as it's not deferred. **If an after market company was to step in and offer replacement suspension/brake parts for reasonable prices, then the Shadow's prices would skyrocket.
Just for the record, the sales receipt for this particular car, which is quotes, is £35,000. We can all decide at our leisure whether the first owner was fleeced. As for the hydraulics and maintenance, you are right but I think the point is that a suspension rebuild will cost you more than the value of the car. You have not mentioned the wiring which is equally dubious at this age. Finally, of course the rr was the doyen of 60s and 70s rockstars, who liked to drive their Shadows except when they were pissed, and often into swimming pools when they were. Basically, lets not knock someone who creates these films for no purpose other than our enjoyment. We can all play I Know Better tennis, as I've just demonstrated.
A new Aussie spec SSII was st 25,500 pounds tax free delivered in London in February 1978.
I found it quite responsive and fun to drive 'briskly' in high speed waft mode across the Continent in 1979.
When it came back to Australia after 18 months and 31,000 kms, the service centre in Sydney commented on the lovely grey colour of the exhaust and particularly sweet motor of a Roller, that had been regularly punted along without dawdling by an enthusiastic 25 year old driver.
In the late 1970s British car reliability also hit Jags and Rollers. This car had heaps of misdemeanours from new, many of which were electrical. The power steering pump ran short of fluid resulting in an under bonnet yodelling ascending a Norwegian fjord, three weeks after the car was checked for the same symptoms in London. Do you fancy pressing the central door locking button down, the doors lock and at the same time the tape player ejects...

My Mercedes-Benz has Lucas labeled components under the hood. They must make something right for Mercedes to use them as a source.
Being the 13th custodian of an '89 Bentley Turbo R , I am looking at a '73 SS for next Spring purchase .It is a 2 owner car ( father to son ) .Physically , the clear coat on car is peeling off trunk lid , otherwise it appears very sound and well maintained . Asking price is $ 35,000.00cdn . Brand new the car was $ 24,500,00 .
These cars shouldn't have a clear coat.
All other cars are secondary when the double R arrives.
These cars were narrower than they appear, I saw one navigating the old streets in Florence with ease on my last trip to Italy.

Probably one of the best looking cars ever made, I think the 1977 pricing is a bit optimistic though. I think the Camargue was around the 40k mark though.

Got in an MG electric car taxi after my jeep Commander v6 diesel that was smooth the MG electric felt cheap, was rough, very very at x15 times the cost on smooth London roads. Got into my Rolls Silver Spirit mk1 on dirt track rural Poland smooth as mustard fantastic craftmanship+ quality- skill shone through. These electrified aswell as petrol green way forward.
No other car comes near the double r what a car and heritage to match willow gold my favourite 👍👍

Why do you all not see it for what it is. Graham that is ridiculous. I don't like the agression exhibited on the internet. People speak to each other in a manner they'd never use face to face. I called because it was easier to discuss it than deal with this internet crap. I think you'll find I said that in the past anyone that spoke to me like people do on the internet got fired. That's me being old fashioned. Please don't miss misrepresent me. I did email someone at your office as well.
The point I made was that you say the car was £35,000 new. You've got the invoice I haven't. But it is the price of a V12 Jaguar, a lot on money in 1977 added to the price of one of most expensive cars ever at that time. i do a lot of research, hold lots of RR literature including the very hard to find price lists and £35,000 is very hard to understand.
I know RR did odd things, Willow Gold, a popular colour in the late '70s, a standard colour in general terms and yet on my specification sheet it's called non-standard and charged out at something crazy like £358, more than some people earned in a month. Having said that what could you have done to a Silver Shadow II in '77 to make it £35,000. Maybe post the invoice on line and let's work out how it was so exspensive.
Back then it wasn't unusual for the price of new cars to be considerably inflated if you wanted to skip the waiting list and drive one immediately. I can remember a Camargue for sale for £75,000 (!) in 1978, and a year-old Bentley II for sale in Bristol for about £33,000, in 1980.

That doesn't make sense. You have the RR specification sheet with a retail price of £35,000 for a '77 built car. What's special about it that would increase the price by that of a Jaguar V12? I have a late '78 Shadow II that only cost £28,450?
You mean a hydraulics rebuild? That's rougly a £4000/£5000 job. If your rebuildinf the suspension on a Shadow II you bought the wrong car. Yes I agree to a point about the wiring or any Lucas stuff. Just rubbish sadly.
The pop brigade were a tiny fraction of the well healed of the world that bough these cars. It's not about knocking anyone, if you put yourself out there you need to get the story right.

In fairness it doesn't really need to make sense because it's true. And things that are true are often difficult to comprehend, like Jedward'a sartorial and hairdressing choices. I think you rang my office yesterday suggesting I should be sacked. There's nobody here to do that right now but I'll certainly bear it in mind.
These cars were over produced and as a result are under appreciated. Shame really as they are still stunning today, and are a bargain for those who want a luxury classic.

You have to be kidding. "Expensive" doesn't begin to describe those mechanical disasters.
I can, but I'm able to because I'm not a fool. I've been amused by the experiences of three of my friends and one of my neighbors with the cars. None of them knew very much about automobiles. Now they wish they had asked me first. They have all sold their cars to "greater fools".
Ronnie (check his RREC repair videos) commented that the Shadow series had the most extensive regular maintenance requirements.
sputnic They are expensive when something major needs to be replaced. Fortunately that isn't too often. I have had a 1965 silver cloud III since 1982. The only major problem has been to replace the cylinder head gasket, which was expensive. Otherwise it's been things like brake pads, tyres, exhaust etc. Yes, they certainly cost more than average. The exhaust was fifteen hundred pounds. But they last. The fuel consumption is not good, maybe 10 miles to the gallon, but I would rather have it than the new Phantom. The cloud is solid and everything fits perfectly. I took a Phantom for a test drive and for a very expensive car it felt cheap. When the indicator was on for turning the radio shorted out and the external door handles were loose. I think my Cloud, worth maybe fifty thousand ( I paid fifteen thousand) is far better in value and quality. The Cloud was hand built and I those days there was a waiting list. Now, partly mass produced, and really just a better dressed BMW, I was told I could have one in a month. They make 5000 a year, it was once about 3000. I plan to keep mine until I stop driving when it will be worth more. I can't see the new Phantom holding its price.
A ten year service is 60 hours ++ labour only. add all the parts and fluids. Take a deep breath it could turn your hair grey that's why if you have to ask you can't afford it. It was aimed at rich people. So don't try and think a service will be a couple hundred quid.

Not said is that the braking system is so expensive to repair that it may exceed the buying price by a factor of 5. While reliable, the second, third, and fourth owners may not have had the money to spend on required maintenance, or unfortunately, believed that the Rolls was indestructible. That was the case with the '67 Shadow I purchased. Previous owners neglected the car to such a point, that while it looked good and ran, it need tens of thousands of dollars to make it right. In the end, I replaced the engine and its cracked block, with a Chevy 350. The result was a more reliable car, but at great cost that will never be recouped. www.rollschevy.com.

+Allmentux Hi. You are probably right. The cost spend became out of control and there was a huge amount spent beyond what I expected. I made several mistakes during the 5 year restoration. First, the car was restored to far away for me to visit it except by plane. Also, problems were found that caused the cost to soar and by that time I had no choice or take back a car in pieces. Finally, I lost patience and had the car returned to me by transport and even then many thousands were needed to complete the car. I learned an expensive lesson, but now the car is magnificent and is a joy to drive.

We drive on the correct, and safer, side of the road, unlike the Americans. This has been proven scientifically!
@@denzelsouthampton4631 Driving on the left is safer. The majority of the population have a dominant right eye, so driving on the left means this eye is nearer the centre of the road, and therefore has a better view of the road ahead.

It was never intended as a flashy sports car
I had a pair of shadows an early 73 and a late 73 one was chrome bumper with vents silver with red leather the other white with tan interior.rubber bumpers color matched white like a cornice i restored both shadows well beyond most restorations.harvey backyard special suspension and ee rubber deals everware,after many years I sold both of them as they ate so much money to keep up. The hydralic system was a nightmare to keep up.the calipers would routinely freeze up.i even tried spirit calipers that helped but the rr 363 hydroscopic fluid was their downfall.if owned in the desert of Arabia that was better but high heat wasn't great either.i ultimately kept the silver spirit with mineral oil.they development leaks but not rust.i loved. My shadows they cost 140,000.00 restored drove them a hundred thousand miles amongst 3 Rolls-Royces but I sold the. So someone else's wallet could feed them the steady stream Of money.im a mechanic I did alot of the maintenance the 14 brake hoses that have to be replaced time after time even under 50k miles having to replace all of them every 20k.miles.i settled on 5 mercedes and 8 cadillacs in. My collection among 12 other cars.the repairs simply last much longer on the other cars.i as it's said got over Rolls Royce disease.
