I took delivery of a new 1978 Shadow II age 24 for London delivery tax free to take home to Australia after 15 months savings 92% import and sales tax. .
Youth hostelled across Europe in it for 5 months.
The SSII was quite a fun drive with rack and pinion steering, Citroen derived suspension and good handling.
Huge fun punting it along intermediate roads in UK and Europe...
It did suffer from quite a few bugs, typical of British cars from the late 70's... Including a "Failure to Proceed" 6 weeks old near Stonehenge...

I owned a '62 Silver Cloud, a '96 Silver Spur, an '88 Bentley eight, and currently an '89 Turbo R. Believe it or not, the Bentley 8 was the best driver of them all.

Between the two of you, I think you've got about spot on - both cars are icons, and I'd happily have either one, though back in the real world, with my own money, I'd be looking at a mid/late '90's Turbo R or Brooklands, for their everyday usability and more modern conveniences (one day I will). Thanks, always enjoy your video's. Cheers!

I like the Camargue. Never did when they came out, but now they sort of still look futuristic. I saw one that had been updated with 18" wheels, Turbo R engine etc and it really looked good. However, if I was to buy one, I'd probably want a Turbo RT (and then buy a Turbo R because of the price difference).

Crewe built Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars, based on the method of running improvements being incorporated during the course of production results in certain batches of cars that stand out as being "better." Here in the US the Crewe built car that is just right is the 50,000 series Mulliner Park Ward Corniche and Camargues built from late 1979 through 1980. These have the new improved mineral oil hydraulics along with the older more reliable and powerful carburetors instead of the sometimes troublesome, less powerful, slower fuel injection. The exhaust note on the carbs is just a touch more throaty and sounds like a big V8 should. This is also the end of the line for the fixed head Corniche, which is especially attractive without the eventual convertible top repairs. These 49 state cars do not meet California smog laws. A California car has fuel injection and the suffix "C" at the end of the chassis number.

In some images, a R-Type or Mk VI is visible, but you don’t present it? Why? I used to have ALL of those models, you speak about and I came back to the BEST and have an R-Type from 1953 and a Mk VI by Mulliner from 1951! They are the best, the last manuals and all of them had a huge sliding roof, which makes them the most comfortable in summer, plus: they are under 5 meters long, very practical though and even in terms of reliability THE BEST!

We had a Bentley Eight and then moved onto a Continental R which to my mind is the last pure Crewe car ; level of finish much higher than the four door cars being coach built
Having said that we also have a 2008 Arnage which to my mind is just about the end of legacy Crewe . Beyond that and it’s really more VW group than Crewe heritage.
I have always loved the Shadow and Cloud , and for me the Arnage is a much more modern expression of those cars . You can see the styling cues but have 450 hp , and a much stiffer chassis

It would be pretty easy to make an argument for any of these being the best. They all have some great attributes and certain things set each apart for one reason or another.
Every time you do a video on these things I keep asking myself why on Earth I haven't owned one yet.
Then I drive past a petrol station, cop a glance at the prices and remember.

I think the guy from NZ has had too much of the amber nectar ! I doubt if more than a few hundred cars were ever exported there.
A good Shadow 1 or 11 is a joy to own. Whilst the Shadow 11 with rack and pinion steering drives better, it's federal style rubber bumpers aren't as popular as the earlier chrome bumpered cars. I have a 1975 Bentley T1 and my brother has a 1978 Shadow 2. Both are lovely cars and not expensive to own, it's our hobby !

I see them every where broken down abandoned in carparks and on the side of the road in most countries. Today almost worthless. The Rolls_Royce vehicles to collect are the much later models.
