  • I explore the musical genius of Philip Selway, the drummer of Radiohead and a prolific solo artist in his own right. From his use of electronic drums and triggers to his subtle, nuanced playing on acoustic kit, I examine how Selway's drumming has helped shape the sound of Radiohead and influenced countless other musicians.

    Let me know what you think of Philip Selway and if there are any other drummers you want me to cover!

      He even performed in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire during the yule ball scene.
      I recommend doing a video on Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem. Truly an incredible metronomic drummer.

      That connection to Stephen Morris is key to 'getting' Phil Selway's playing

      I'd love an Off Beat video dedicated to Billy Conway, the late Morphine drummer.

    When 6/8 was described as an odd time signature, a part of my soul died

    I think the reason he doesn't get much praise apart from the praise from musically competent Radiohead fans is because sadly unique styles and playing that fits songs perfectly doesn't make for as good articles and video titles. You wouldn't read about "top 10 drum grooves that serve songs perfectly" you'd read about the most 'hardest' and chaotic drum grooves. And it's a shame it works like that.

      Yeah, Phil's awesome, but not in a super loud drum solo type of way.

    I also love his work on "Pyramid Song" and "Bloom."

      What about Airbag?

      @ridwanabdillahrisbar8796 that's just a 5 seconds loop machine

      Airbag is one of my favorite drum beats, especially with the little accents on the hi hats so it’s never consistent. I played drums for around 10 years. Supposedly Pyramid Song is in 4/4 but you could fool me. I could never lock that beat in. Keeping the count with that sort of syncopation takes a true professional.

    One of the best rock drummers! So unique, especially on Ok Computer!

    I saw Radiohead promoting their Kid A album. Understated vocals, drums and guitars. I’m guessing because they all contribute and get on well and no ones being a prima Donna. You never hear about any internal conflict for a 30 year span band ? Never going to scare you but definitely move you.

    You could cover Greg Saunier from Deerhoof. One of my favorite drummers, especially live. He’s like sloppy and precise at the same time. Totally unique and underrated in my opinion.

    The only reason why he's so underrated is because there is so much going on each of Radiohead songs that most can not even concentrate in the drum parts per se.
    Same thing as Phil Collins drumming in The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

      Do you think Phil was an influence on Phil?

  • @Big_C_4205
    @Big_C_4205 7 місяців тому +3

    One of my influences, I like knowing that he’s this humble guy just wanting to serve the music, not some Travis Barker putting some 64th note fill at the end of every 4th bar. I steal from Phil’s drum parts all the time. I want to be more laid back like him. Attainability IS inspiring for me.

    Thanks for this video. Listening to Dissect Podcast's breakdown of In Rainbows and I was curious about Selway's contributions. I love his style!
