  • It’s the wrap of another great project. Kevin tours the renovated house with the homeowners. Kids and parents arrive to check out the new and improved home.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib....
Homeowner Liz grew up in the house and inherited it from her mother. Renovated to accommodate three generations under one roof, there is now plenty space for her family and for Joe's parents.
Liz greets Tommy and Kevin inside and shows them the minor changes to the living room.
Upstairs, Norm and Charlie look at how removing an old chimney gave them more space for bigger closets in the girls' rooms. Down the hall they see the new laundry room that was once a small bedroom.
Inside the new master suite, Norm remembers repurposing an old door with Joe and framing the closet wall with the apprentices.
Over in the in-law suite above the garage, Kevin meets up with Joe and his parents, who are thrilled to have such a comfortable space while visiting their grandchildren.
Norm walks outside and finds Roger at the new sod, which was put down right before the first snow of the season. Roger's crew saved Liz's mother's roses and lilacs from the yard and returned them. They cut and pruned trees and planted three fruit trees. A new stone wall sits along the driveway.
The three apprentices who worked on the house over the summer -- Austin, Bailey, and Nathan -- meet Tommy and Kevin at the front porch and talk about what they've been doing since their apprenticeship ended. Kevin follows Richard downstairs where they compare the old monster heating system that was in the basement with the new boiler and distribution system, air handler, water heater, and heat recovery ventilator.
Over in the garage, there's radiant-floor heating and another air handler system for the guest suite above. Joe and Tommy meet in the new mudroom and look at the custom cement tile floor, stained glass window and powder room. In the corner of the living room, they see the new wood-burning stove that Joe helped to install. Liz gives Kevin a tour of the kitchen with new pantry.
Finally, everyone gathers around the newel post in the mudroom, where the family inserts a time capsule for future generations to find.

Austin's contribution will remain visible for all to see in the house which he helped breath new life into. Obviously, he was a good person to be proud of as are the other two apprentices, Bailey and Nathan. Their contribution too will shine for many years alongside that of Austin's. Thanks to This Old House for showcasing the human side of bringing an old house and home to life for another generation to be proud of.

Always so great seeing Norm and ole Roger who have both worked together since TOH began back in 1979. Roger looked like he was limping here a bit and was struggling with his gait. Alot of speculation as to what was going on with him health-wise but based on what happened to me with my gluteus medius (upper glute on sides of your hip), I'll bet it was/is related to that. A medius flare-up is deeply and nauseatingly painful, can extend down into ones groin, and given it hits the vagus verve via the gut connection, it also causes nausea and extends into your psyche via the vagus with depressive effects - you feel whole-body terrible and can barely walk. Hope you feeling better these days Roger. Great seeing you Norm and always amazing seeing what kind of industrial art you come up with Richard! RIP Austin!

Even if you took a cheap labour rate of $40/hour (and probably was a lot more than that) and say 6000 man hours.. thats 240k just in wages (and probably a lmore than that). I think this was closer to 750k-1mil.

A room is still a room, oh, even when there's nothin' there but gloom
But a room is not a house and a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart
    ----
Me: Our stay on Earth is temporary and our happiness is tempered by a divorce or the loss of a child so let’s not obsess ourselves with our renovated dream house. This Old House is kind of a sad show when you consider the homes will long outlive the homeowners.

The fact it takes 8 months to merely remodel and add an addition.......No wonder there is a housing shortage. My parents home was built in 1969, took less than 3 months from the foundation up. Concrete block home, 3 beds 2 baths, attached garage. Still standing to this day.
