One aspect of the soundtrack that doesn't get enough appreciate is the way they built this sort of low staticky growling rumble of the sun's energy into the surround-sound soundscape at a frequency that is almost more felt than heard. So in a big-screen theater setting you could basically **feel** the force of the sun in a way that was very visceral and felt terrifying close and dangerous, putting you much more in the scene than you might otherwise be.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. An underappreciated masterpiece made in 2003 with flawless VFX that still stand up today. It was WETA's first project after finishing Lord of the Rings, and featured a perfect blend of CGI, miniatures, studio sets, and full-scale ship replicas (one mounted on an enormous gimble) to depict naval warfare in the age of sail. Nothing has matched it since.

It had a video introduction from Cillian Murphy and a Q&A hosted by the BBC's "Sky at Night" host, Maggie Aderin-Pocock with the film's director, Danny Boyle and the science consultant, Professor Brian Cox.

you guys should invite Scott from "Scott prop and roll" along with Adam savage for an episode of "propmasters react". Have them bring their favorite props in, too. • @maxcandlestick8027

Well, technically, "visual effects" means manipulating images outside of the context of a live-action shot, and all the stuff in the shot, like puppets, squibs, prosthetics, animatronics, are all "special effects." Like in Jurassic Park, they have Stan Winston and the special effects team making the big mechanical dinosaurs and car rigs, fake goat legs, and such, and they have the visual effects team making the CGI dinosaurs and doing comp shots, that kind of thing.

The opening shot of Serenity where it transitions from the Universal logo to the apocalyptic Earth is done really well, and the shot around the 10 minute mark where they're entering atmosphere feels so real. @sandwiched I don't believe they do. I just watched it last week. Flying past the Ravagers, it's quiet. The shot I refer to at 10 minutes is quiet until they hit atmosphere. I don't recall a point where they have audio in space other than maybe when Mal fires the cannon they mounted to the roof at the Ravager ship. But that's a view point as is you're standing on the roof so you'd "hear" the cannon through the vibrations of the ship.

Considering the awesome first short shown, have you guys ever seen any of Mike Jittlov's short films?
He did several _amazing_ animated shorts back in the 1970s. At one point he was hired to make an animated short for a Disney TV special, about the ultimate Micky Mouse fan, so there are _countless_ Micky Mouse merch figures being animated. But when it aired, the music he had written and had for it was replaced.
    He was _not_ happy.
So when they hired him again, and he made his classic short _The Wizard of Speed and Time_ (eventually he made a feature film about that character he created), Mike animated himself singing the song he'd written for the short.
Now, Mike had been given carte blanche to do as he liked, and after he submitted the finished version, he received an enraged phone call from some empty suit exec over the fact Mike had _sung_ in the short, meaning they couldn't remove and replace the music. He was always mischievous so he smiled on the call and essentially replied, "𝘠𝘦𝘱...!"
Tied with _Wizard of Speed and Time,_ my favourite short of his is _Animato,_ and while it's not a narrative film it's very visual, it utilizes Petula Clark's _I Know a Place_ song.

    • @NMN
      @NMN 7 місяців тому

Very good rec, the full movie has the film exec ask 'What's the hardest kind of special effect?' and Jittlov replies 'Stop motion with Pixilation' - Pixilation being the use of real actors in frame-to-frame stop motion. The fact that we also see Jittlov also plan out mouth movements per single frame to sync up with prerecorded sound in editing is an absolute marvel.

I watched poltergeist with my 13 year old son this Halloween, and we both couldn't believe how good the house implosion scene looked. He genuinely asked "how did they make films look so good back then?" And I explained the mix of miniatures/practical effects and well placed cgi. He started to talk about how older films looked more real than most modern films

I wrote Sunshine off when it first came out. Figured it would be forgettable. 10 years went by and I saw it on sale at a used video game store for like 3 bucks. My mind was blown when I watched it. It's one of my favorites of all time now.
I also found out why it was for sale so cheap... It was the Blu-ray that had the commentary show up randomly no matter what you did. 😂 I later bought a version that didn't have the commentary constantly out"shine" the movie. The actual commentary is great though as it's Dr. Brian Cox who helped out with the science aspect.

Building a similar version of DIY Perks' lens is going to require some tuning based on what lens size you can get out of an Opaque Projector and then what frenal lenses you will need. Although posting the 3D printable parts, rails, and motor setup he came up with would be great. A SeeRite Model 6x6 or a 10 x 10 would probably be the best options and easiest to find (they were big in the 50s to 70s).
I'm sure you could fine a few makers in the local LA area that would be happy to take on the project for you and possibly build a lens adapter. I could knock one of these out given the time, but I'd take much longer and fumble my way through it more than guys who have a decent maker workshop at hand.
The biggest thing is grabbing the lenses on ebay for $70-90 each, and then start measuring their focal distance. Everything else falls into place after that. Of course if you can find larger, and probably much more rare lenses things get substantially better.
Of course since you guys have pro-cinema equipment available, once you figure out the optimal setup for a Red (or any other rig) your also in the correct area make a dozen and lease them out for insane amounts of money to studios.

Always glad to see Sunshine getting the respect it deserves
I remember coming home and my dad had it on the counter as a rental from netflix (yes kids, back in the day netflix would MAIL you the dvd of the movies you wanted to see, there was a queue and waitlist and everything)
I had nothing to do and was bored, and he usually gets the dumbest c list movies, so i figured I would watch it til i got bored and then do homework.
Man was I wrong, one of the best "real" sci-fi movies I have ever seen, and one of the first times I ever found myself liking the a-hole in the movie the most (captain america)
Ending got a little weird for a few minutes, but other than that, it as gold
