- Canon EOS R5 vs BMPCC Pocket 6k Which camera is more Cinematic ?
Which camera has more dynamic range and which one looks better on a low light test side by side comparison video.
The canon EOS R5 is a 8k camera that can shoot Raw video vs the Blackmagic Design Pocket 6k camera that can also shoot 6k Raw video. Lets see which camera looks better and more cinematic.

Im supporting three companies... I have the BMPCC 6K pro, Several canon lenses and two sony cameras (A7III and A7RIII)... i love for cameras in general :)
Would love to see this re-done with the R5C, especially low light.
As you said in this video the R5 should have had the sensor advantage, so the quality difference had to be profile, codec, settings, etc.
The R5C has expanded the video recording features, and from what I gather depending on what your format/settings are is easily 2+ stops better than the R5.
Yes. It’s probably is. I have R5C but haven’t tested those two cameras side by side to be honest
It looks like Cam A has more dynamic range because it is more "gray". In first park scene camera B had sky blown out but A had still some tiny but recognizable gradient in the sky. So I think camera A has better chance to be pushed in grading room. So my guess is that A was BMPCC6K, and B was Canon R5. Did I got it right?
As a Canon user I choose BMCC 6K.
Their menu interface and image quality I think is top notch!
And price wise, if you are a videographer BMPCC6K all the way
I liked the Canon for daylight shots but the blackmagic is so much better in low light, tha'ts why I end up with a collection of things, different camera for different jobs. Great review mate, have a great week, cheers :)
It’s crazy that with such a small sensor the pocket 6k can do wonders! Thanks for watching my friend !
I would say the opposite. BM seemed to have more Dynamic Range in the daylight shot, but had far more noise in the low-light stuff.
A = BMP6K, B = R5 (I think the bokeh balls in the car video match the bokeh balls in the beer shot LOL).
Also, B looks to be more finalized than A. A seems more flat and less contrasty (and a bit more dynamic range) which would be the case if you shoot Raw vs Log.
Just an educated guess.
Your guess was perfect!! When I was Looking at the bokeh balls I knew somebody would catch that. Haha Good eye
77dris If you have ever filmed with the blackmagic 6k camera then you know the reds always seem to clip as on the red car in this video. But at the end of the day both cameras produce great images and most people can’t tell the difference anyways because it’s slight differences. I have seen tv shows and some movies with blown highlights and lots of noise in the shadows filming a night scene so it doesn’t even really matter that much as long as the content is good
@@adrianmack9542 I agree 100%
@@FamilyofTech Whoa. I've been a photographer for 15 years, no video but I'm learning. LOL
@@FamilyofTech Oh I almost forgot, you said if anybody guessed correctly, they would get your R5. How do I get you my details? 😜
For around the same price of an R5 ( and RF lens) you could own 1. Sony A7iii + Panasonic S5 + BM4k and use any Canon or sigma lens. that way you are supporting 4 companies :-) and have NO headaches :-)
Then you have to buy lenses for all those cameras and much more gear lol. Sucks when stuff starts hitting this level but this is pro gear,
Headaches when color grading!
Nice review question was the low light test both filmed in raw????? Because i think you can get more DR in raw with clog 2 from davinci resolve on the canon eos r5
I edited on FCPX. I might have to try that on Davinci
@@FamilyofTech How did you edit braw on FCPX? I know there is a plugin for Adobe, but didn't know about FCPX
I edit on both softwares ( Davinci and FCPx). You can change BRAW to ProRes on Davinci resolve. On the deliver tab on Davinci it allows you to change it to ProRes then edit the files on FCPX
That was a really great comparison side by side. Camera A- bmpc6, B- Canon r5 because Canon has that red tone, contrast and super sharp quality variation. Make more videos like this and related to Cinematography 🤗😊😀
Thanks for the feedback and for the comment. What camera are you using ?
What I thought as well, generally I love the canon r5 better, but it’s just my preference, and I’m glad I have my dream camera too, if there’s any other camera illustrations consider, then it would definitely be the FX3 because it’s the only camera that I can think of that is maybe better than the R5 or R6ii, and I also just love the aesthetics of the FX3, so maybe good for a second camera while the R5 remains my main Camera.
I don’t understand why you didn’t shoot the canon in Raw. C log to BRAW is not a good comparison. Raw to BRAW would be a really interesting comparison. Otherwise nice video and thanks.
Will try to repeat the test using Raw with both cameras. I thought people were going to be more interested in the 8k format rather than Raw since on every forum people keep saying nobody is interested in the Canon 8k raw format because of the workflow. But I will try to repeat the test.
Family of Tech I understand, except the bmpcc 6k BRAW work flo is not exactly streamlined if you are cutting in fcpx. But I get why people might think so. I have both of those camera too and was very interested in the comparison and I’m too lazy to do it. :). Thanks for your great videos and for the response.
Richard Reens hahah! I know. It takes times to do this comparison. Will keep you posted when I finish doing that video. Anything you think I should include so people don’t say: ahh but you didn’t do this or you didn’t do that !!
Family of Tech I think you covered it all (other than RAW). I was curious as to framing but then I saw you used zooms and assumed you compensated for super 35 to full frame so they matched. I’d be interested in seeing the uncorrected raw to uncorrected braw, but maybe that’s just me. Thank you!
Richard Reens Yes. I compensated for the crop factor to make it look the same. Thanks for the tips!
You say that the turn around time on the R5 is faster although I've heard BRAW is much easier for a computer to process then 4:2:2?
Braw on Davinci Resolve will be faster for sure. Canon R5 needs a powerful computer to process the files.
Yeah my computer is absolutely no slouch, and I have to optimize every clip in DR for it to play back smoothly before grading and editing. And that’s at 4k.
I’ve got samples from the bmpcc6k and the braw files in 6k playback smoothly with zero hitching even after grading and effects.
I don’t have a bmpcc yet but we’re planning on picking up two simply because of the ease of post in comparison to the CLog out of the R5.
Which camera in your opinion is Camera A and which one is Camera B?
I preferred Camera A (except the first shot). A seems to have more dynamic range, but B seems much more detailed and nicer "as is" before grading.
Also, for low light, the R5 is a beast! SO much cleaner than the BMP6K, I'm surprised because the BM has dual ISO's correct? Really impressive results for a 45 MP sensor.
I just watched this on my 5K monitor and I was blown away by how clean the R5 image is. Too bad UA-cam compression is so terrible and adds artifacts and banding on all its video.
Thanks for this. Thumbs up!
B was definitely more vibrant!
Hello Adam, well again, I'm not receiving a notification for your videos? I here because I did receive today's notification, go figure? Excellent review and comparison of the Canon and BM. Camera B has the win for me, and NO, I didn't read the reviews before writing my comment, B=Canon A=BM. I know in one of your previous videos, you tested the low light capability of the BM, and once again, the BM won in your low light test. Thank you, off to watch the other videos I haven't seen yet; take care.
Which one is good for weddings shoot?
Both are amazing at image quality. In my opinion pocket 6k has more filmic look. However both have the same battery issues. One you need additional batteries (or external batteries ), to make it work and the other one you have to be careful with overheating.
Also the autofocus is important as well. Even though you can get some type of single autofocus with the pocket 6k, with the R5 is continuous autofocus. So you will always find a pro or a con to each camera!!
B cam has more dynamic range than A cam, As well as Sharpness & Contrast... So it must be the R5...
You haven't said whic is A and B Camera please tell ?
A was Blackmagic and B was canon R5. Thanks for watching the video!
Canon philosophy. Lets build the perfect camera except you can only use it for 30 minutes. Oh you want to use it for longer than that? Well then you'll have to pay triple the price.
Hahah! That sums it up basically!
@@FamilyofTech Yup. Meanwhile I think I’ll just stick with my fujifilm xt4. If I didn’t need the continuous autofocus Id go with bm 6k. Once there is a continuous autofocus solution for blackmagic its game over.
Cant wait for the r4 that costs only $1000 but you can only use it for 5 minutes before overheating.
And then the r3 for $500 you can use for 30 seconds and the r2 for $100 gives you 3 seconds of filming. Keep going Canon
I have the pocket 6k and there is a new autofocus system that will be soon announced. Not sure if you heard of it!
I film a lot of slow motion, so for me the choice is simple.
Dude amazing video!
Night shot, below the tree canope, there is simply nothing visible on canon compared to bmpcc
The canon looked very clean !!!!
Which camera was A?
Camera A was the pocket 6k
Can R5 do 4K RAW too ?
No. Only 8k . It would’ve been super nice to have 4k Raw !
@@FamilyofTech thanks for the reply ,.. from my understanding of using canon since 2000.. it'll never make a perfect camera
Hahah! That’s what I keep hearing. Hopefully if they make the Canon R5c it will hopefully be the perfect compact mirrorless camera for video!
@@FamilyofTech 🤣 they will never make one camera their marking wants us to buy 3-4 bodies & few similar lens with is & without is as it's made with aperture difference .... Canon will fall soner or later
Which one is A , which one is B you don’t say and just u put A and B
A is pocket 6k
Well one shoots in raw so
B canon
Bravissimo😉
As I expected , R5
Lol!!! Thanks for watching.
B
Camera A
A is the Canon
I like A better, more dynamic range and colour except for the first video. I thought A would be BMP6K myself.
A was BlackMagic and B was Canon R5!!
