I did it, because first of all my university is public, is in my city, the tuition wasn't expensive and my expenses were low. Besides that, I love learning and my degree guarantees a job, I graduated years ago and guess what, I'm starting a new major, in another university in another city. This time I'm just enrolled because I love the major, I'm not even concerned about getting a job with that degree, but who knows. At the end, regardless the career path, the university shapes your mind in different way, no need to work on that field, though, but for sure it does bring benefits the fact that you have higher education.

Sometimes things don't go the way they plan. I went to a rubbish secondary school and got average grades for my GCSE. Went college and did a btec diploma as I didn't get a high grade to do A levels. Went uni and did a biomed science degree and thankfully got a first class. Now doing a masters in UCL at the moment. I could of applied to medicine but I was wondering if it's the right thing for me. Doctors are constantly busy and I noticed their personality are different because of this which I don't favour. Now my qualifications do give me a lot of job opportunities however I have an eye on one training program I want to get into. It's really competitive sadly and thankfully on my first application I got in the reserve list so I was close to an interview which I might still be called for if someone withdraws.

You neglected to mention that you were preferentially hired because you had a degree. Without which you would probably not have had a call back for an interview.
For those of us who are a little older, not having a degree is extremely frustrating when job hunting. Despite years of documented experience in a field, it is nearly impossible to be promoted or even change industries.
Current society demands that you have at least one degree before you can get past the automated resume discriminators.
A degree may not help you with achieving your dreams directly, but it will certainly help you have a career.

If the universities made liberal arts hard like it used to be, you would have very few students studying in it and the degree would be useful again. Think about learning and reading Latin and Greek to study philosophy, this is fcking hard and your degree would at least proof that you are hard working.

      For sure!
So many job postings that I have seen want a degree but they don't even care what it is in. The postings often say 'Degree Required'. Not which field. No mention of Associate, Bachelor, Masters or PhD. Even for jobs that clearly after two months of doing the work you would be 90%+ up to speed and after six months it would be like you were there for years.
Many programmers, coders, and developers clearly show it is about skill, not education level but in so many other areas or fields, skill means little unless you have a degree so you can get past the first level of screening and actually meet the people in the department you are targeting.

I disagree and earning a degree may do some harm or benefit depending on circumstances. There's better alternatives such as professional certifications or trade school. Also, people need to understand if a degree will help them fulfill their vision. Some carreers it's mandatory to have a degree. People aren't fourtunate to spend a vast amount of money and waste time finding their passions. It's not worth the debt. I've climbed the ladder without a degree and helped my company scale its operations to be profitable, which lead to a acquisition from a private equity firm. Im a college dropout. I guess I'm lucky.

I'm doing my masters in psychology, I'm gonna be a psychologist next summer. Five years ago, when I applied for uni, I did it because that was the only profession that interested me in the slightest. I always knew I'm never gonna be the classic therapist with a couch, but there are sooo many fields that I can work in with that degree. But even if I'll never use my diploma in my life for work, I learned sooo much that can't be taken away from me. I learned so much more about people, about myself. I learned how a scientist thinks: how I need to analyse things before I believe it, how I need to listen both proofs and disproof, how I need to change my mind if the proof says otherwise, how I need to adapt to changes. I learned that if I try hard enough with a program, every result can be significant, and that made me wary of sketchy studies. I learned to speak my mind in groups, I learned how to give a presentation. And I was around sooo many creative, bright minds that all wanted the same thing, to understand human nature. My psychology studies gave me a perspective that I'm so glad to have, and 100% worth it, even if I never use my degree again.

Update: On october I start a new career at 31yo, I'm going back to college to study Software Development.
I spent 7.5 years in university for an architecture degree, needless to say I didn't like it very much but I had no idea what to do about myself so I just made the effort to finish it. I deeply regret it, worst about it is I can only blame myself for not leaving when I had the chance.
I've always wanted to make videogames, but people around me, my parents and society itself made me believe that was not a "secure" thing to do, back in 2008 there were no Videogame Design degrees anywhere in Spain, if you wanted to do that you had to study Computer Science and then learn by yourself, but I'd tell myself I was too bad at math to do that; things changed some years later when courses and degrees started popping up as the industry became stronger, but I felt it was too late for me to start all over again in my mid 20s.
Last couple years I've been feeling deeply disappointed with my life, I work as a "designer" in a company that sells urban furniture, and I really don't enjoy it, so I've been trying to learn programming and videogame design by myself, but I'm getting older and it's really hard to take everything in, specially considering everything I know about videogames is playing them way too much.
No one ever taught me to follow my intuition, we live in a culture of hard rationality that fucks up everything and everyone.

Nowadays life is way more expensive and you go nowhere without higher education, which means the choices we make have a bigger impact on our future. Don't give up, you still have time to change your path and believe me, working 9 to 5 on an office job SUCKS, so you better be working on something you like or you will loose yourself eventually.

It seems like most people have to choose between stability and their passion. If they choose stability, they will be called a sell-out, and if they choose their passion, they will be called a lazy moocher. Either way, they will suffer. As for myself, I chose my passion for writing, already knowing perfectly well that I would probably never make a living pursuing such a passion. At the end of the day, we have to choose what will satisfy our spiritual needs, regardless of what others think. In some cases, that might mean living a life of poverty, self-isolation, and loneliness, three things that most people would like to avoid, but by choosing the alternative, you will never be aligned with who you truly are.

People tend to mix up between getting Univerity "Education" and just getting a Degree. It all depends upon the individual's mindset and the reason WHY they choose to get into college/school.
University can be a good place to learn to socialize as adults, developing discipline and some work ethic, and being responsible overall. It can also be a good foundation to get structured knowledge. But the problem comes when people begin to associate their identity, worth, and eventually their life's destiny to a Degree.
Considering a degree as a "Must" for survival can really limit a person's potentials. It must always be taken as optional. If getting formal education serves you in whatever you want to pursue and pushes your growth, then go ahead and get the formal "Education".
But if your reasoning behind getting a degree is merely to get a job and just settle with it, not growing forward or exploring creative opportunities, then that's not going to take you too far.
Also, blindly following the education system without questioning and thinking independently might also greatly limit one's potential. It has its ups and downs. If you do choose to go for formal education, just be conscious and don't get hypnotized by the system.

If you have the possibility and freedom of choice, I would recommend to postpone the aspirations of getting an education. It’s a massive investment and you never know how you will feel 1-2 years into the education. Many programs teach to be an employee. But if you already have an education and think about doing something else, know that people will always give you extra points of approval because of it. Whether it’s in business or personal relationships.

College is all about the degree program you choose. If job prospects are weak to nonexistent in a particular field, then that’s on you.
You can freelance learn ANYTHING you want, thanks to the internet and its infinite amount of information.
So, for example, a history buff doesn’t have to pursue a bachelor’s in History to study History. Outside of education, history degrees have weak job prospects.

I think that for young people, we are expected to do it because that is what society says, but the reality is that you should really know yourself and know what your true passion is in life before you decide what you are going to do. You have to decide WHAT your purpose is, and then decide the best plan of action to get there! Blessings to everyone!

My whole family including grandparents studied so this is their reality and obviously they want you to choose the path they know was successfull for them. But you have to make your own path even if that might take more effort or be less of a stable/secure path.

Lana, thank you so much for making this video, it was really comforting to hear those words because i went (& i'm still going through) the same exact thing ! At 18 i made a choice that wasn't based on what i truly wanted (i was still lost..18 is indeed a really young age to decide what to do with the rest of your life) so i went to med school because it's supposed to procure a descent life while also having a purposeful job (helping people , and doing a good thing for humanity ) but during those 7 years i went through hell and felt depressed all the tiiime because it wasn't something that i love, i was constantly questionning my choice , not being abIe to quit because i already went through half the path.. I graduated last year and i'm still having the same thoughts (i'm 26 now) i finally accepted that i can do it for a living and not consider my life 'wasted' because i might be helpful to people & make them feel better but i'm also still hoping that someday i'll be able to lead a fulfilling life aligned to my values & dreams by doing something else that i love alongside..i loved everything you said, it was so reassuring and i realized that i'm not the only one who's going through this so thank you ❤

Wow.. your words are gold. You expressed what I think in such a reasonable way. I'm a nurse, 4 years studying a degree, 8 months working as a nurse and now I feel this is not for me. I feel like I have changed, I am not the same person. I chose nursing because I like taking care of people, I have a part of me that is very empathetic. When I was younger I thought I must save people, now I don't think like that anymore, obviously. I had such an obsessive personality. I went through a lot of anxiety and suicidal thoughts when I was a teenager (until I was 20), now thanks to God I am free of that. Because of these emotional problems, I searched stability as you said in the video, but now I feel stability and surviving are not enough, what about happiness? The same happened with a boyfriend I had. I was only focused on stability, what about happiness? What about the sparkles, the laughter, the joy of life? I think about these things because thanks to God my situation has improved a lot.
I feel this career isn't for me. But now what am i supposed to do? Study another degree? Don't get me twisted, I like taking care of people, I like being with people but the shifts, the pressure, the medical procedures, the same routines, quite a few rigid minds...I don't like it. Sometimes you feel so alone. Being a nurse have given me something precious that I will never forget, that I will always carry with me, a experience that have enriched me in a way that I am so grateful for. But I believe I can't do this job forever or even for a year more. I want something that brings me happiness, some fresh air...I think about studying mental health nursing or I would like to work with children but not in a hospital, or even being an actress or a journalist. I don't know, It's a road I have to figure out. Do I stay in nursing but in another field or I quit nursing? I don't know
This video was everything I feel right now. I don't tell people how I feel because they don't understand me, they are all about money and success, oh fantastic you are a nurse, but deep inside I don't want to be in this place for a long time. People think I am childish, okay maybe but now I am happier than ever. I'm happy because I am trying to figure out my future. I think this change I feel in myself is because the anxiety and depression have been relieved from me. I feel that I am free and I feel the urge to enjoy everything outside these walls. Thank for your videos (sorry for my English)

I’m 20 right now.3rd year at university studying English philology. Picked the field because I knew that I would be okay teaching. Was lucky to get a job at the 2nd year. So now I’ve been teaching for almost 2 years and I feel absolutely okay with it.It is not THAT demanding, it’s meaningful and I feel like I matter by teaching my students how to manage their stress, attitude towards grading etc.I think I kinda have this stability you talked about. But as for my passion, I want to become a musician and now I am split between music and teaching trying to improve in both. My mind is constantly questioning everything and I sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed because I have to pursue both. As for Uni degree,I guess it is nice in terms of life skills, connections and conclusions you make throughout this period. But as for education part, it is not that great, especially, as someone said in comments below, with the influence of internet.

Most of us experience these moments and only a few of us act on it like we should. This is how life is: stages. If we don't change ourselves, we're not going to succeed, and in some cases... evolve! You're lucky to have gone through your life changes early to get a good amount of experience from it without being too far behind from the societal norms of the digital world. I continue to enjoy the content you share. Thanks!

Fantasies are very real that we romanticize and entertain them. But you're so right. How many people change degrees or career paths.? We all reach different maturity levels and aren't ready untill late age sometimes.

I feel the same way as you Lana, and I am older and have been ignoring that little voice for the longest time, not daring to seek my path. Eventually, I started questioning everything. There is no guarantee that answers will come right away and that you´ll find your path immediately after years of doing what you thought you supposed to be doing and ignoring your inner voice. I am starting to get more clarity but it takes time and patience and a lot of self-love. With that in mind, even if you didn´t find your true calling yet, even with a corporate job, it is not that bad as long as you keep loving yourself. As long as you keep nurturing your mental and physical health. As long as you learn how to give back...

I did the same! In Italy I went to University twice and switched major after one year. I'm still doing my Master's because my parents don't want me to pursue my creative career -- I feel like here in Italy the creative stuff is not accepted
I hope you all find your life path as soon as possible

How in the world did you become so wise at such a young age? I'm so grateful for your videos!
I was one of those perpetual students. I've attended about 10 or 11 universities, though I only have three degrees - an associate degree in electronic technology, a bachelor's in electrical engineering, and an MBA. I was lost when I was young, and I didn't care if I lived or if I died. I got my associate degree because my Dad forced me, although I had an absolutely terrific experience with that college, mostly because of all the friends I made there, and all the marijuana that we smoked, and all the incredibly good music that was coming out back then that we listened to. (Ever heard of the band Return to Forever?)
The rest of the universities I went to were out of my own choice. Like you, I went college to get a job and financial stability. I had no idea what to study. My only interest was playing guitar, but you can't make a living that way. You are going to laugh when you hear this, but I decided to study electrical engineering because I thought to myself that at least when I graduated I could make myself a free wah wah peddle. I was 27 years old when I got my bachelor degree, and I couldn't agree with you more that 18 is far too young to be deciding what you want to do for the rest of your life. (Although I still wasn't able to decide that when I was 23.)
My Dad has always had a huge influence on me. Later on in life he realized that he had made a mistake by forcing me to go to college, and he then suggested that I should take some courses just for fun. I thought that was a good idea because back then I loved learning new things. I took a graduate level course in linguistics that was absolutely fascinating. I took a course in the history of the Middle East which was also terrific. I took courses in the Chinese language, and in the history of China and Japan, and in east-west relations. All of these courses I took just for interest really enriched my mind and my life. Due to lack of interest and problems getting along with my coworkers, the longest I ever held a job was about 3 years, and I have been unemployed for long periods in my life. (The theatrics I had to go through to cover up the dreaded blank spots on my resume was a sight to behold!)
Now I am retired and I spend most of my time watching UA-cam videos on every subject under the sun. I only discovered UA-cam about 6 months ago and I am continually amazed at the huge variety of brilliant videos, friendliness, spirit of collaboration, and humility of UA-cam video makers!

"Make sure that you can stand behind the decisions that you make. Because that is your responsibility and no one else's." So good!! It's both liberating and scary to remember that I have the free will to follow that inner voice. It doesn't go away and keeps nudging me. Thank you for the video Lana and again, what a beautiful community you have down in the comments below

Great video Lana, thanks so much for coming out and sharing your personal experience. For me I have to say I have reinvented myself so many time, going back to uni a number of times throughout my life to try to basically improve myself and the only way I new how was academically. Work I found was a means to survive and pay the bills. And that dictated the direction of my career.

I went to university for my Bachelor degree (after obtaining my college degree) for almost a full shool year. I quit after 7 months, realizing that it would not add any value to my life. The course material was not related to the field I was studying and it felt like this wasn't meant for me. My mind was telling me to quit and so I did. I didn't regret abandoning university for a single day and am happy with my current life, enjoy the field I'm working in and don't have any debt.
I also think that money does not always equal stability. It provides financial stability, but more in the form of a guarantee, as it provides a certain amount of income every month, when you have a job and are performing labour. but it definitely does not equal stability for me. An example of of stability would be working a weekday from 9 - 5 or working regular shifts. Stability also does not define anything else but stability in life and it doesn't mean it'll make a person happy. Some people define themselves as happy when having lots of money and posessions, others define themselves happy living remotely and enjoying a minimalistic life. This is personal for everybody.
I also think it's not a bad or scary thing to question the path you've taken. Even if it took multiple years of your life, you can still change the direction you're heading. If that's what makes a person happier, then it's actually worth thinking about it. It's better to have spent a few years getting to know yourself and understanding yourself, than living the rest of your life in misery and with regrets, thinking that you should've changed paths anyway all those years ago. You do not sweep those emotions under the rug either, as they'll actually be with you your entire life (both positive and negative) and they are valuable life lessons to be learned and to look back upon to learn new things from it, in order to carve out new paths towards your own destiny.
Listening to advice is good, but you eventually need to make your own decisions (on which you can weigh in the advice a person gives you). The only person that truly knows what's best for you, is yourself. Even if others frown upon it or do not agree with the decisions you make / you've made. The decisions need to make you happy as a person and you need to live with these decisions.
Nothing in life is a safe bet indeed, but you can make your bets on the options which you think are best. One thing I've learned is that achieving something in life makes a person happy, but that happiness is temporary and doesn't last forever. It's always a temporary feeling. Once you've achieved what you wanted you need to find the next thing which you want to achieve and start working on it, as that'll keep you motivated, challenged and happy throughout the process and give you an even happier feeling upon the moment of achievement. That's the constant process of achieving / evolving / bettering yourself.
P.S.: I really enjoy the music you're using for your videos. What are the artists / numbers you're using in the background music of your videos (it sounds like classical / light jazz)? It's always so calming / soothing and really a good match for a Sunday evening.

I never went to a university but I made more than my friends who did. I was a stupid free spirited kid in my early 20s and just enjoyed being immature . After I hit 26 I knew it was time to grow up and make something of myself or I would be living in mom and dads basement. My parents had friends who all had million dollar homes and they all had one thing in common...STOCKS .... So I learned from the best and became much better at it than them. The rest is history and I never have to worry about money again....Without God opening my eyes and giving me the chance of a lifetime....I would have ended up working for hourly wage.

Sometimes I feel people make their passion their profession and when you have reached a point of burn out you'll start having existential crisis because if this is not what I am supposed to do then what is? The very things that ignited me now I get bored of it. So it's not necessary for you to choose profession which is your passion. You can always have two things running along.

I've been in a similar situation like yours, I saw myself working and having a career that I didn't wanted anymore, that totally loses the sense and I was actually realizing how empty it was, so I decided to quit, and also your video about you quitting your job helped me at that time. Fortunately I didn't had to spend years in the university to work as a model, but those last years doing it were enough to decide that I don't want to spend anymore my life time on it. I also couldn't imagine myself at university, wasting my time looking for a high payed job, so I dropped out the school. I needed a long period of time focus on myself, developing my self knowledge and evolving each day to finally be sure of what I wanna do. Eventually you realize that other harder questions will come, and you have to take a decision.

Just randomly saw this video and you are as close to me as I've come across. Like you, I skipped a grade so I had to decide what to study at 17 and all I had ever thought about was the classic "stable happy life working in high rise buildings". I studied commerce(finance) and LL.B (double degree) and I LOVED them (and therefore did really well). I worked at one of the Bulge bracket investment banks over summer and multiple other places and realised that all the money flowing into my bank account and despite the fact that I enjoyed it - didn't really fulfill me. I didn't feel like I was adding to this world in a tangible way that I could see. This lead me to Medicine. I am now 24 and in my Final year of medicine (Finished first degree at 20). Like you, I actually get excited to go to the hospital daily now and love studying medicine - the current coronavirus situation has, if anything, solidified my decision to leave a potentially very lucrative and high flying career for something I feel like is much better suited to me. Hope you continue thriving.
