I'd prefer jessica cruz's hair short, because we see, shes in therapy so it could have been like she's overcome her anxiety and fear of what happened to her friends and is pushing herself to be better, which includes self grooming, which connects to her ability overcome great fear hence explaining why she was able to overpower the power ring and become a green lantern
Honestly, Jessica Cruz rocks both, but I think it depends on the vibe of the story. Long hair feels more iconic and superhero-y, especially in action scenes, but short hair gives her a modern, grounded look that makes her stand out more next to Wonder Woman.
I wouldn't necessarily say that Miss Martian turning into young Tim Drake means that the that is his current appearance, it could just be a jab that "you used to take teenagers on your missions before"
Although Hal Jordan and John Stewart will always be my go to Green Lanterns, I like that they were willing to adapt a lesser known rendition of the character. By the end of the film, I could totally understand why someone would see Jessica as their Green Lantern
As for me, Jessica Cruz, Guy Gardner and Buzz whatever his last name is shouldn't have ever even existed. They add nothing to the overall Lantern lore, that Hal, John or Kyle already added. And Kyle is already a stretch here.
Hal Jordan is the single worst thing to happen to the green lanterns outside of the paralax story. The dude is just plain boring. Alright; I’m being harsh. Second worst, guy sucks balls.
Hmmm, I may have a solution. Her trauma isn't just almost dying. It could be taking another life. She's scared of what the ring can do, the Green Laterns noticing a Power Ring with negative energy and offering to purify it, but Jessica is still afraid of it, which is why she doesn't wear it.
Honestly the relationship between JLU and the JL Doom/Crisis on 2 earths continuities is fascinating. Since fatal five originally started out in that continuity you have that nice connection between it and the Power Ring connection, so I can now weirdly see more of a reason for it to have started out in that canon. Learn something new every day!
You guys must be reading my mind or something. I was literally JUST THINKING "I wonder when the next Watchtower video is gonna drop." And BOOM, here it is.
You know, this video is just a great excuse for me to think about Justice League vs The Fatal Five again. I love how they wrote Jessica Cruz's experience of dealing with trauma. Her and Star Boy bouncing off each other. Star Boy is so cute just by himself! And I've forever had a love Emerald Empress in any form. She's one of my favorite villains! As for the question of the Day? I love the short haircut. It looks smart and focused without being too business like.
What’s with watchtower database making a green lantern video without a green lantern? What about his sidekick skeets? Didn’t even mention the episode where green lantern gets put on crowd control! Smh.
I honestly couldn't figure out if they held doing this video until now just to use the clip, or if they edited a damm good impersonator into the scene lol
Jessica is by far my favorite Lantern. She's so drastically different from the other Earth Lanterns and is a strong showing for how far comics have come from the sauve, heroic, mostly depthless characters like Hal was originally to being able to tell more relatable stories like how Jessica handles her PTSD and anxiety. All that being said, the way her long hair flows when she's powered up on a comic panel is frankly iconic of her
Short hair, personally. I’m not particularly well versed in her stories, but from what little I’ve read and having seen JLVF5, I think it gives her a more distinct look. Most of the DC heroines have longer hair, with few exceptions. I think this helps set her apart.
I liked Jessica's hair to be short cause I think it still shows that she's still dealing with her trauma. When she was out with her friends, her hair was long but after the incident I assume she cut her hair, almost as if she's trying to leave that behind her. If they ever continue her story in the DCAU, they could explore her overcoming her trauma and her hair starting to grow back to it's original length.
The ad secetion being named "My kids need new socks" sent me to a level I cannot describe. Great video as always guys. Also I like the short hair, but both are good
This is fascinating. And as a human (as far as you know) living with post-traumatic stress disorder, I can tell you that your theory that Jessica's trauma is worse because she DIDN'T get the ring right away holds more water than you might expect. Brains are strange, plastic things. PTSD happens because either a single event (as in Jessica's case) or an ongoing horror (as in mine) messes up the brain's stress response. People with PTSD basically get stuck in the state they were in when the bad thing(s) happened, and they keep responding in ways that made sense in that situation but may no longer be appropriate. (For example, I flinch when I hear a door slam, even though slamming doors haven't been associated with danger in my real life for many years.) But lots of people go through trauma without developing long-term symptoms, so there are some fascinating studies trying to figure out why. One factor that has been identified is whether there was time for the stress response to cook, if you will, before another major stimulus came along. Believe it or not, making people play Tetris soon after a traumatic event like a tornado seems to reduce the prevalence and severity of PTSD. The brain quickly moves on to a new thing and doesn't have time to marinate in the terror. It's still bad, but the game can help to break that particular pattern. If Jessica had gotten the ring right away, that would have been her Tetris. She would have been suddenly awash in new situations and stimuli, and while she might end up traumatized by THAT, the stress response would probably look very different. (I envision her keeping the ring locked up and never touching it.) Also: she's not kidding about PTSD nightmares and catastrophic ideation. Hoo boy. Before I had PTSD, I couldn't stand horror stories. Now, as someone who's had PTSD and been in therapy for years, I WRITE horror fiction and have to run it past normal people to make sure it's not too scary because very few things are as scary to me as the inside of my own head.
Power Ring wasn't from an anti-matter Earth. He was from Earth-3. Fun fact: Owlman got killed by Doctor Manhattan. I like Jessica with short hair. It's comfy and easy to wear.
In brightest day, in blackest night, short hair suits her better, just like Videl is better with short hair… (I tried to make it rhyme, then I realized I can’t rap worth cr@p…)
Was just talking about this channel with a friend a couple of minutes ago and decided to check out the channel, and a new video was uploaded 3 minutes ago, hahaha. You guys rock.
Another top tier vid, as always! I love it when y'all get into the comic lore and compare and contrast it with the DCAU material, you did a great job breaking down Cruz's convoluted origin in a really concise way!!! Straight fire!!!!
I saw Cruz in the comics first so I thought i would like the long hair more but the short just looks so much better. (Just don't have her stand next to Miss Martian for too long)
Long, I think. No, short! I have never really thought about it. That is such a hard question. I'm going to need some time. I'll get back to you on this.
The great thing about hair is that you never have to commit to one style for very long. When you're a Green Lantern, I'm sure you can REALLY experimental with your look.
Really? Are people really wondering if Caped Crusader is canon? I’d think Catwoman’s meeting of Batman, Harley’s origin, Dick’s childhood, and the fact that we have a race-swapped Gordon Family with Barbara being much older than Dick would all be qualifiers to say “This ain’t BTAS” But what am I complaining for? More Watchtower Database content
I have heard that some people are connecting caped crusaders to the old max fleischer Superman cartoons, even some background characters are 1:1 recreation of Lois lane and jimmy Olson where the Lois lookalike had a line sounding very similar to how she was in the fleischer cartoons
@ I mean that’s neat. I’m just genuinely shocked if somebody watched both BTAS/TNBA recently, and then went on to watch Caped Crusader and think that both are connected whatsoever. The only reason I’d ever think somebody would think they’re connected is if it’s been years since somebody’s seen BTAS and had a loose memory of it and just assumed that the new Batman show in the Bruce Timm style was ofc connected to those old 90s cartoons
Great video James! To answer the question of the day I’ve never known Jessica Cruz has long hair as her usual style so since I saw her with short hair first I think I prefer her hair short.
I don't think it matters whether Jessica's hair is either long or short, it mostly just boils down to if the hair length matches the character design she has. I like both basically
QotD - I'd probably opt for Jessica Cruz with long hair if only because I saw fanart once of her brushing her hair with a construct comb and I thought it was cute As a big fan of her in the comics especially the Green Lanterns series she had with Simon Baz i'm glad you guys put all of this time into discussing her DCAU counterpart, I def think this movie is canon and I like the idea that her origin happened at the same time as John's ring breaking in Starcrossed sparking her eventual journey as GL. Looking forward to the next vid!
Short hair is the way to go!!! Thanks databuds!!!! Love your work!!! Can't wait for Caped Crusader Will It Canon!!!! Props to the REDLETTERMEDIA Shout out too!!!!
I think the headcanon that this video describes could make a great season of a justice league show. Start with a 3 parter that has the same basic plot as crisis on two earths, and then have some episodes with Jessica's origin, showing how Volthuum makes its way to the DCAUniverse, and her becoming power ring, and then a full green lantern. She could then be a new member of the main cast
LOVE to see the Heroes Reforged boys in a WD vid. Hector is my favorite! James, this is the best vid in a while. Love the humor in this one. Splendid work.
I think I prefer jessica's hair being long, gives her a more unique silhouette compared to all the other GL's who are all dudes with short hair. The change is understandable though since long hair is more time consuming to animate. Its all about the pencil mileage!
I love that The Truman Show has somehow become a part of watchtower database videos and I’m telling myself that’s ever since another certain podcast talked about that movie.
I know that these deep dives into continuity are time-consuming to make, so thank you. They're my favorites. For your QOTD, the Jessica in JL vs FF is the only one I'm familiar with. I like her short hair just the way it is.
Okay hold up. 20:07 A comic book adaption of an original Batman film inside of a VHS tape box sounds AMAZING. That I'm too young to have made that purchase wounds my soul.
I like Jessica's hair shorter because i feel it gives her a more unique look and also because it makes think about the DCAU which makes me think of you guys and your awesome videos
Great video! Been missing watching some videos lately glad I caught this one with my new born before I went to work. I love Jessica’s hair short in the movie and long in the comics. I think it works short in DCAU style as short but I think the longer hair ages her and gives her more experience on her belt!
I like the short hair and I can imagine it would be easier to animate so it's a logical choice, but I admire how it's used in the comics to show Jessica's state of mind when she's struggling and when she's winning her personal battles. I noticed that in the flashbacks she did have longer hair in that ponytail, kind of obvious I admit, so narrative-wise I could see her cutting her hair to have one less thing to deal with in her recovery. Psyched for the Caped Crusader video, too, that series is the best thing to happen to Batman in years!
They should have called the fatal five in this movie the fatal few tbh and tbh since I first learned about Jessica Cruz from Lego Batman 3 then the Fatal Five movie I'm more used to the long hair but the short hair works better for the JLU style however overall longer is better.
Great video by the way. i never get tired of DCAU green lantern content. Have you ever wondered about the origin story of how DCAU john stewart recieved his power ring?
As a woman (not named Jessica, sadly) who recently cut my hair short I will have to be on the side of short hair. Love your deep dives as always and super excited for next month's video!
I’d say long hair works better when Jessica is shown to be reclusive, which would imply that she’s not taking especially good care of herself, so cutting her hair or having someone cut her hair wouldn’t make sense. Once she’s on a path to overcoming her trauma, short hair would be a good visual indicator for that.
I like her short hair as I think it helps with combat more especially for Green Lanterns as they make their weapons and fight based on whatever's natural to them. Also while the power ring may work an Idea I have from watching it, is what if the reason her ring could be the only one to work because every Lantern Ring is made different and their cell was made to ONLY be unlocked by her ring and no other. Which would also help explain why it talked as maybe hers had that function while others didn't and when she was saved by the ring from the cliff it could have taken her three years to both come to terms with what happened and also to also no longer be afraid that the murder was still out to get her.
I was absolutely blasted while watching this and the whole video felt like a super fun exploration of fitting her in the timeline with great pacing that never keeps you bored. You feel the effort put into the editing of this and its so easy to watch with a super satisfying ending. "Clarity" that whole sequence tickled my brain. Much thanks, a fellow fan.
Given the cameos of Hal and Guy, I always just figured that something like the comics happened where the Guardians lifted the one Lantern per sector rule, so now there are just four or five Lanterns on earth.
Honestly, my favourite Green Lantern has always been Kilowog. As for human Lanterns, even though I too was raised with the DCAU John Stewart, for me Hal Jordan is the one I've enjoyed most in the comics. I love John, but I think the comic version at times isn't as cool as the DCAU's John.
QOTD: I am not a Jessica Cruz fan. But after a quick perusal I think I do like the design, in the DCAU. Just because it's some variety. I do notice an awful lot of DCAU ladies have hair that is about as long as Wonder Woman down to or a bit past the shoulders: Supergirl, Zatanna, Lois Lane, Hawk Girl, Ten, G-Cindy Reynolds, Dana, Black Canary, Huntress, Stargirl, Inque, Dr Light, I could go on. I don't know if I'd call what Jessica has "short hair" either. Ice, Max and TNBA Selina Kyle keep it real GIJane short. But Jessica's got a bobcut which is about as long as Galetea, Annie, and Ace. Which kind of makes it seem like it's the hairstyle of choice for the depressing backstory crowd.
I like Jessica Cruz's hair either way. Long or short is cool with me. I think I got so used to seeing it short after watching the Fatal Five movie so many times that I'm comfortable with it either way
For hair, I think it was all right. Sometimes I forget that she does have long hair in the comics every time I watch this movie but they did a pretty good job of her so I don’t mind. I do believe this movie is canon in the DC anime universe, and also my head canon that Batman did comfort her, when she was rogue, her powers that’s mine canon 😊💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Great video! Curious to see what yall say about Batman caped crusader, Honestly think the short hair style for Jessica stuck for me like it a lot! Honestly think the short hair style for Jessica stuck for me like it a lot!
Great upload! Re: the question of the day, I gotta say I did prefer her long hair before....I kinda have a thing for longer har. BUT seeing Jessica's hair in the movie looking as good as it did, I think I prefer the short hair now!
I really dig the idea of the "oops" reasoning. Kind of like how the a new slayer was called on Buffy the Vampire Slayer when Buffy died...for like a minute. :) You guys are the best! I can't wait for the Caped Crusader video. And, I'm still hoping for that Teen Titans/The Batman Will it Cannon. Something else I'd love to see is a look at Justice League Action. I know it's not DCAU, but there are certainly some things that would be worth taking a look. :)
I guess I like the short hair more, but I could really go either way and be fine. With how often regular people change their hair style, surprised we don’t see superheroes do it more often. I guess you need that recognizable look to sell.
I actually prefer the DCAU haircut (short) but honestly I love anything DCAU Thanks for another great video! I hope I win the Displate. I love that movie
in the comics Jesica's ring is an older early ring, it why it works with her even with her PTSD, it has fewer rules, and it chose her after not having a GL for like centuries

Great video! Been missing watching some videos lately glad I caught this one with my new born before I went to work. I love Jessica’s hair short in the movie and long in the comics. I think it works short in DCAU style as short but I think the longer hair ages her and gives her more experience on her belt!
A: If I had to choose I’d say long and flowy, Seems more fun to draw and see.
Good video 31:57 I imagine Diana and Jessica Cruz could have a connection ( similar to Batman and Cruz from the original comics)
Which obscure media pull will James mention today?
“Blake Shelton’s ‘God’s Country.’”
Wow! Okay!
I actually really like the dcau Jessica Cruz design with short hair, could be my nostalgia towards dcau design though. Really neat video
Short? It fits in with everything else in this world.
Can I have a shiny poster now?
To answer your first question, due to grand parents being the age they were, I think of Alan Scott and then Hal Jordan
Great video! As far as TQOTD: I didn't mind Jess with short hair. I was just glad she was adapted well into the movie.
I am a big fan of the short hair Jessica Cruz!
Thank you! Comments like this mean a lot to us 🙏
I like her with long hair better especially the versions that give her a green streak in it that always looks great I think
Given the cameos of Hal and Guy, I always just figured that something like the comics happened where the Guardians lifted the one Lantern per sector rule, so now there are just four or five Lanterns on earth.
Jessica's hair is better long, but I'm glad she was featured at all in the movie.
Yet another banger! I think Jessica Cruz looks better with the long hair
Can't wait to hear more about Uncle Willie.
Curious to see what yall say about Batman caped crusader,
Honestly think the short hair style for Jessica stuck for me like it a lot! Honestly think the short hair style for Jessica stuck for me like it a lot!
I like her hair long but the change doesn’t bother me that much and I think it’s a unique touch to her. Making her stand out
0:07 You beat me to it 😂
Wait...I thought Jessica Cruz became Power Ring in the Forever Evil event, but I could be wrong
Yes, though I always just lump that in since it was the lead-up
11:20 Why didn't his suit vanish?
It looks good either way, but for animation I prefer the short hair.
I prefer Jessica's hair long, but I loved how she was adapted in the DCAU. She is becoming my fav GL💚
I actually prefer the DCAU haircut (short) but honestly I love anything DCAU
Thanks for another great video! I hope I win the Displate. I love that movie
I like Jessica’s hair short. Shorty looks fiiiiiiiiiiiiine in green
in the comics Jesica's ring is an older early ring, it why it works with her even with her PTSD, it has fewer rules, and it chose her after not having a GL for like centuries
