Mercy in the DCAU DEFINITELY deserved better, and she ultimately did in the end. After the JLU series finale, she more than likely resumed complete control of Lexcorp.
I'm fairly certain that Mercy Graves' appearance in The Batman 2004 was the very first time Mercy was portrayed as an Asian American woman which has now become the prevailing portrayal of her in the comics.
Mercy is one of my fave side characters, so mad she just unceremoniously gets blown up in Hack Synder movie. Like Jesse Lex needed someone to talk and not monologue to. I really like her look in The Batman
4:50 The sad thing about the mindset that you owe your life to someone, is that even if he/she mistreat you or even is willing to sacrifices your life, its still difficult to get away from this toxic relationship, as he/she has a notable power over you, like if you belongs him/her, as a "property."
Mercy Graves is such an underrated addition to the show and much like Harley Quinn or Livewire, she was an original character who became a canon character in the comics. I really like Mercy and how much of a loyal yet imposing demeanor she has as she seems to be willing to give her life up for Luthor even when Luthor doesn't think to leave her behind. I do wish the show explored Mercy's background more since she says she was once a street rat but Luthor gave her a chance to be his personal bodyguard which I feel like had potential to dive more into her character. I do think its cool to see Mercy in the Justice League series become more independent and even ditch Luthor when hes a wanted fugitive and full on desperate supervillain, as she takes over LexCorp, which is similar to how Harley Quinn went on a arc in the comics to finally leave the Joker behind and find her own agency as both Mercy and Harley are victims of toxic male figures/lovers. I think Mercy could be a cool secondary character to be explored more, give her own agency as a her own character and I feel like diving into her relationship with Lex would be interesting, at least have a different relationship than Harley Quinn and Joker. I did also like the idea of Mercy having cybernetic implants like she did in Young Justice as maybe she could be reimagined as a someone who was so desperate at one point that Lex came in and gave her a purpose, or something like that, this is just off the top of my head?
Not gonna lie I had a crush on her as kid a woman who's has a canon for an arm as a bodyguard and was pretty and funny I instantly fell in love with her
Both Mercy and Harley are very similar to each other. Both were created specifically for the DCAU, both were the henchwoman for the two biggest villains in the DC universe. The biggest difference between Harley and Mercy is that were as Harley served the Joker because she was in love with him, Mercy on the other hand served Lex out of respect for taking her in when she was child. I liked that in Justice League, she got a slight redemption arc by having her betray Luthor and take over the company herself, but then in JL Unlimited Luthor regained control of his company she'd immediately went back to being his assistant because the writers had no idea what to do with her afterwards. So, of course, Zack Snyder decided to take this beloved and underrated character and just completely kill her off all because Zack had no idea what to do with her (or Jimmy Olsen for that matter) because he's a talentless hack who is unable to write any character beyond making them brooding emo edgelords. And the less said about the Young Justice version, the better.
Even if I never cared for Mercy Graves I feel she was a fun sidekick for Lex. Unlike Harley Quinn who did it for toxic love unaware Joker manipulated her Mercy trusted Lex like a tool who trusted him. Mercy is kind of tragic and while Harley is tragic because her backstory was explored Mercy is blind. I feel while we could've had some more episodes for Mercy perhaps that was the point. Mercy is kind of tragic because unlike Harley in the DCAU she did try to abandon Lex. But maybe that's the point. She's still loyal to Lex and despite it all will always serve him.
One thing I liked was that Mercy is genuinely taken aback when Mercy is genuinely surprised when it looks like Superman has gone rogue. She genuinely respected Superman after they worked together in Ghost in the Shell
I think she's an Amazon in the comics, too. It was even mentioned on the DVD that the creators considered giving her an Amazonian or other unusual origin.
It's funny how in the end Mercy and Harley really weren't that different, despite hating each other. If we had a "Superman Beyond" I wonder what we would have seen happen to her.
I assume that Mercy Graves would be the CEO of Lexcorp (renamed to MercyCorp or something) and become something more than being Luthor's lackey. Maybe she would occasionally help Superman with some mysteries he's trying to solve. But hey, that's just my two cents on this matter.
It's also is why their fight works. They're both intelligent women who are devoted to selfish, vile, egotistical, men who treat them like dirt. They mirror each other in a way
@seeleunit2000 actually I kinda like the idea of it still being called LexCorp. She uses Lex's name as leverage and publicly mythologizes his genius to the press, effectly turning Luthor into her own commodity to use as she will. Cheapening his name by making it a mascot like Mickey Mouse almost.
Mercy and Harley quinn are pretty similar. They both work for two men who do not care about them They each have a toxic relationship but the difference is that Quinn deluded herself into thinking The Joker loves her while Mercy KNOWS that Lex doesn't care for her and wants to get away from hjm but she still remember that he rescued her from the street and literally made her who she is, so she finds it harder to pull away from him, no matter how much she want to do it.
I always thought of her as the new version of assistant Eve Teschmacher from the original movies, with a similar name and role. Only Teschmacher was a lot more critical of her boss' plans and defected to join Superman much more easily.
Would love to see a future video on Erik Lytner aka Luminus - an underrated Superman Villain that sadly never seemed to escape the DCAU. The ability to make 'Dense Light' Holograms and weaken Superman by altering sunlight. Also interesting as he's a victim of collateral damage by Lois Lane's single-minded crusade to expose corruption in Lexcorp that she unintentionally creates this Supervillain who wants her to suffer.
When Mercy appeared in the comics, she resembles Cammy White from Street Fighter, who never left Shadaloo. But when she's reinvented as an Asian American (depending on which version), she looks like Matori from Pokemon, who acted as Mercy Graves to Giovanni's Lex Luthor.
The characterization of Lex as a domineering, manipulative creep via the way he seems to get off on having complete control of Mercy is why I think the DCAU is so brilliant. Showing instead of telling. A worse show(s) would have it spelled out in dialogue.
You'd probably like Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. The entire comic is about how Lex is in denial of his true nature and that his hatred of Superman is nothing more than petty jealousy, and the lengths it makes him go to.
Lex and Mercy definitely were romantic, although she found herself wanting him even more. Mercy's journey took her from being an orphan to a chauffeur, then a bodyguard, and eventually to becoming Lex's second-in-command. Lex had a soft spot for her. I like to think that when he abandoned her and she later returned the favor years later, it ultimately earned him more respect for her. And Lex like Palpatine had a thing for “uplifting” the poorest, although only if it benefited them in the long-term.
I swear I remember reading a comic (maybe an elseworlds??) where Mercy was revealed to just be a robot Lex had built. Or it was a robot copy? Either way it would be one of the most fascinating and revealing takes on the character and her dynamic with Luthor.
If that's the story I'm thinking of then that may have been Hope rather than Mercy. She was a fake-hero created by Lex in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, a maybe/maybe not cannon comic that showed the rivalry from Lex's perspective. Lex also had a robot sidekick who looked a bit like Lois just before Flashpoint, most prominently during the Black Ring story arc.
I wonder if there's a name for that trope of character. Because this video made me think of Gazelle from Kingsman, the main henchwomen to Samuel L. Jackson's character. With unwavering loyalty to a plan that involved culling half the worlds population.
I never saw those episodes of Justice League with Mercy. She looks... off. The chauffeur's outfit always made me imagine she had a lot more muscle to her, but that dress and long hair make her feel kinda interchangeable. I wouldn't have guessed that was her if you didn't tell me.
I didn't make the bond villain/ girl connection until you pointed it out, and I'm a big fan of those films. Well done. And speaking on The Batman, what is your opinion of their Harley Quinn.
Great presentation! I always wondered about her whereabouts after Justice League. I found it interesting the James Bond actor with only 1 movie to his credit was the voice of King in Batman Beyond. Keep up the good work, sir! :)

I just kind of wish we got more of a backstory for Mercy Grace sort of like we gotten for Harley Quinn,I feel like she could’ve been a really cool foil for Harley Quinn like she is this super cool, chilled hen woman even when facing against dangerous obstacles while Harley Quinn is very goofy and very upbeat and they kind of have a bit of some similar origin stories.
Superman and Lois has a version more like the later comics versions of Mercy, Amanda McCoy. They also went the route of casting the role with an actor of Asian ancestry. I was always impressed Mercy never showed anything under that skirt, considering how active she could be. I am often torn if I want more backstory on someone or not. While it would have been interesting, leaving it vague left it open as well. Finally, I always thought there should be more fallout from Lex leaving her to die. But only souch you can do in a show, I suppose.
Mercy also shows up in the Young Justice animated series for a few episodes, but she is unfortunately relegated to a non-speaking role and is portrayed as Lex's loyal bodyguard, and is shown to even have a cybernetic arm with some noticeable firepower in a small handful of the episodes of Young Justice she appears in. To be clear, this is how I know her from the first 2 seasons of Young Justice, I kind of stopped following the series after the second season wrapped up.
it seems like she's a paralel to Harley. Only without (allegedly) sleeping with her 'crush'. it's bad that the show didn't have her turn spy on Luthor for Superman and later the league. Or cutting ties with him altogether. :3
My eyes are terrible so i looked directly at that thumbnail and thought she was flying towards the camera with legs outspread until I clicked and saw that what I thought were her legs was actually the dashboard and upholstry it's a miracle i can see well enough to walk in a straight line
@SerumLake Suppose that DC created a sister show to "Batman Beyond" with Superman as the main character. What would become of Mercy, after the disappearance of Lex Luthor after the JLU finale, and how would she be used to occasionally help Superman during his adventures?
Oh, I so hope she also appears in James Gunn's DCU. Probably not in the first Superman movie, but I think it would be a great idea later for Lex to have her kill Eve Teschmacher once he realizes that she doesn't offer anything to him (particularly intellectually).
Mercy feels like a combo of Harley Quinn and May-Day. All henchwomen devoted to their respective bosses. All of them able to hold their own in a fight. All betrayed by said bosses.
I don't think her feelings toward Luthor were the same after he abandoned her to Braniac. Still, Mercy is pragmatic and Luthor was, at most times, her best option for achieving the status she wanted, even if she couldn't trust him.
Terminal ( Batman Beyond). The Royal Flush Gang ( Batman Beyond). The Terrific Trio ( Batman Beyond). The Justice Lords ( Justice League). Earth Mover ( Batman Beyond). Payback ( Batman Beyond). Dr. Wheeler ( Batman Beyond). The Joker Gang ( Batman Beyond). AMAZO ( Justice League). The Ulti-Men ( Justice League Unlimited). Morgan La Fay ( Justice League). Mordred ( Justice League). Amanda Waller ( Justice League Unlimited).
I personally like the rendition of Mercy in Young Justice. She is a bit of a mix-up between the original Mercy and the gun-making Mercy from the aforementioned comic. Her history is unknown to me (I haven’t seen seasons 3 and 4 so no spoilers) but it is unclear if she is an android, a human with cybernetic upgrades or something in between. Her battle with Speedy in season 2 is an awesome one.
Too bad that we don’t know what happened to her after the Cadmus arc since Lex was exposed as the crook he really is, you know since that Cheetah should have a male sidekick of her own like a anti Steve Trevor of sorts.
I think thanks to Lex' grooming her and her training she is a cutthroat as he is and there really isn't any normal way she would do the 'right thing' without a neck next to it. She joined Lex in the Elections because she was promised a lot of power for herself and she thinks she is wile enough to know when Lex will conveniently turn on her to save his own skin. her morals are dictated by her profit margins, you can't expect much from her. The difference between her and Lex is that she can only think as an goon executive in her ambitions, while Lex has more personal ambitions in tech advancement to boost his ego.
Irene like Mercy because she's an interesting character just like Harley Quinn I like that in the late 90s early 2000 Comics she was like on Amazon and share like a part in the name of Hope and you know they're both of mercy and hope and she's a very interesting character to me I want oh yeah she's from that show I like
I personally saw Mercy in the DCAU as someone who likes to be a bully, and being second to Lex gave her the authority to push people around. It’s the same as those cliche mean kids with the followers in the background who do nothing but sneer at others, laugh at their leaders jokes and echo what they say. Some people just get a kick out of ruining other people’s day and will latch onto whatever power they can get their hands on to do so
Mercy probably decided to become Luthors number two after he got out, to avoid Luthors wrath. And luthor probably played it cool, as he can't get his company back without forgiving Mercy. Both sides probably agreed that this is the least ugly and most professional option.
I hope in next weeks episode he mentions that according to the DVD commentary that the crew realizes that they should’ve had Farmer Brown be the one to replace Hugo strains because of the embargo rather than just do I remember the new guy situation?
Do you know I’m gonna be weirdly honest I forgot Mercy was in unlimited and I didn’t even think about that when it first came on I didn’t even know that mercy was still his secretary. That is sad the way they left her character. Maybe they’re saying the same thing about her with Harley. They’re both very similar to one another. It maybe in a way they left Harley story in the DCau is kind of a representation of what mercy story ends up being
I don't remember what it was about or the context, but I have this vague memory of Lex and Mercy MAYBE having a kid? It may have been the first time I understood there was a hinting of romantic interests between he two and I was looking up how someone may have been connected to Lex. But I could be wrong and mixing two memories together with that of looking up Lex and another memory about possilbe DC parents and their offspring.
Didn't Lex Luthor have a pair of renegade Themiscyrans working as his bodyguards at one point in the comics? I mean, maybe I'm just misremembering them being described as Amazons and taking it literally, but I'm sure that there was a point in the comics where Luthor had two super-strong female martial artist bodyguards to protect him, and those might have some connection to Mercy Graves...
They did hint that Mercy might be an Amazon in the comics, presumably to make her more of a physical threat to Superman, but that was dropped pretty quickly.
I feel like much like Harley and Ivy's relationship she would have Talia as her best friend since the two have a common thing of being obedient to there powerful fathers and have a wide amount of skills to be able to fight side by side.
She strikes me as a very intentionally reserved character. I suspect her creation was motivated by the need to have somebody for Lex to pontificate and monologue to, 'tis a shame she's not as prominent or well developed as Harley
Gene Splicing Farmer Brown? Looking at him, I wonder if he was an inspiration for Dr. Animo from the ben 10 series; who also has a thing for splicing animals but more often drastic evolution to street level destructive megafauna.
Her power to transforms limbs into weapons was probably based on her appearance in Young Justice, where Luthor implanted a cannon in her arm
Wait... I thought she was like an android or something in young justice...

Finally, I always thought there should be more fallout from Lex leaving her to die. But only souch you can do in a show, I suppose.
I need to get around to watching that show…
Given that she eventually stops showing up, there is a lot that can be implied without a flat out statement.
Kicking Clark's head in would be just as bad for Mercy's foot as it would Lexcorp's public image. Lol
I'm utter heartbroken that they rolled back her character development and made her Luthor's slave again. I truly hate it.
7:13 wow
My eyes are terrible so i looked directly at that thumbnail and thought she was flying towards the camera with legs outspread until I clicked and saw that what I thought were her legs was actually the dashboard and upholstry
it's a miracle i can see well enough to walk in a straight line
Maybe I should change the thumbnail… 😂
@SerumLake lmfao, did other people have the same comment
@SerumLake Suppose that DC created a sister show to "Batman Beyond" with Superman as the main character.
What would become of Mercy, after the disappearance of Lex Luthor after the JLU finale, and how would she be used to occasionally help Superman during his adventures?
I liked her fights with Harley Quinn
Oh, I so hope she also appears in James Gunn's DCU. Probably not in the first Superman movie, but I think it would be a great idea later for Lex to have her kill Eve Teschmacher once he realizes that she doesn't offer anything to him (particularly intellectually).
Or just give Teschmacher some of Mercy's best traits, the same way The New Batman Adventures made Tim Drake be given Jason Todd's traits and spunk.
Sarah Sampaio is listed in the cast of Superman as Eve Teschmacher.
Lex treats Mercy in much the same way as Joker treats Harley.
Mercy feels like a combo of Harley Quinn and May-Day.
All henchwomen devoted to their respective bosses.
All of them able to hold their own in a fight.
All betrayed by said bosses.
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
You’re welcome, thanks for watching
I don't think her feelings toward Luthor were the same after he abandoned her to Braniac. Still, Mercy is pragmatic and Luthor was, at most times, her best option for achieving the status she wanted, even if she couldn't trust him.
Does anyone else think Mercy is the Harley Quinn to Lex Luthor's Joker? Just me?
You are not alone!
5:00 she must have good pay if she goes back to serving him
Terminal ( Batman Beyond).
The Royal Flush Gang ( Batman Beyond).
The Terrific Trio ( Batman Beyond).
The Justice Lords ( Justice League).
Earth Mover ( Batman Beyond).
Payback ( Batman Beyond).
Dr. Wheeler ( Batman Beyond).
The Joker Gang ( Batman Beyond).
AMAZO ( Justice League).
The Ulti-Men ( Justice League Unlimited).
Morgan La Fay ( Justice League).
Mordred ( Justice League).
Amanda Waller ( Justice League Unlimited).
Great picks.
I had no clue condiment king debuted in BTAS!
He wasn't a real villain per se in the episode, but yes.
I would like to see you make a video analyzing The DCAU version of Killer Frost. She was 1 of my favorite minor villains from The DCAU.
8:24 That explain Supercorp!!! I've been wondering about that for like a week or so at this point and I finally found my answer!!!
Given she has done his dirty work for a while, he probably knows enough that she can’t cut the cord to him without great personal risk.
@@dkupke Oh good point there.
For once, I've seen the episode he's talking about 😂. I've been watching STAS and have been loving it
Irene like Mercy because she's an interesting character just like Harley Quinn I like that in the late 90s early 2000 Comics she was like on Amazon and share like a part in the name of Hope and you know they're both of mercy and hope and she's a very interesting character to me I want oh yeah she's from that show I like
I used to her and lex were lovers
ngl i wonder what happened to her after luthor and darkseid went into the source wall
I really enjoyed her character I wish you would have been in the Justice League cartoons
I personally saw Mercy in the DCAU as someone who likes to be a bully, and being second to Lex gave her the authority to push people around. It’s the same as those cliche mean kids with the followers in the background who do nothing but sneer at others, laugh at their leaders jokes and echo what they say. Some people just get a kick out of ruining other people’s day and will latch onto whatever power they can get their hands on to do so
Her running back to Lex is sadly an example of love being blind 💙 our feelings for someone aren't always reciprocated 💔😭
It's very interesting that she's essentially just Superman's version of Harley Quinn, but sadly without the baggage and nuance HQ brings to the table.
Mercy also made in appearance in Young Justice, where she was a cyborg with a blaster arm as well.
Also, Lex gives Superman his business?
Was I imagining it, or was Mercy implied to have been an Amazon in the pre-52 comics?
Considering who's getting a spotlight video next week, are we possibly getting close to covering some _Static Shock_ characters?
No plans any time soon, but I will get to them eventually
7:26 This happened during the "No Man's Land" incident that introduced the Cassandra Cain Batgirl!!!
Mercy probably decided to become Luthors number two after he got out, to avoid Luthors wrath.
And luthor probably played it cool, as he can't get his company back without forgiving Mercy.
Both sides probably agreed that this is the least ugly and most professional option.
Which ep did she and Lex show up in The Batman? 7:45
"The Batman/Superman Story: Parts 1 and 2" for Season 5.
I hope in next weeks episode he mentions that according to the DVD commentary that the crew realizes that they should’ve had Farmer Brown be the one to replace Hugo strains because of the embargo rather than just do I remember the new guy situation?
👀
@ guessing by the emoji you didn’t know that The DVD commentary for critters mentions this
Guess again 😉
@@SerumLake so you do know it you’re just surprised I mentioned it
The emoji just meant that you should keep your eyes peeled, but I guess I can just say that yes, I did know, and yes, I do talk about it😉
It's curious that no one got mas because they switched her race. Good video!
Cool vid bro.😺
Do you know I’m gonna be weirdly honest I forgot Mercy was in unlimited and I didn’t even think about that when it first came on I didn’t even know that mercy was still his secretary. That is sad the way they left her character.
Maybe they’re saying the same thing about her with Harley. They’re both very similar to one another. It maybe in a way they left Harley story in the DCau is kind of a representation of what mercy story ends up being
I was surprised that Dr. Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) voiced Mercy was mind boggling to me. Keep it up. Next time, do one for Lex Luthor himself.
Love to see her involved with Gotham Sirens, maybe bond with Harley
Awesome!🤩
I feel like her arm canons in the comics are in reference to her arm cybernetics in young justice.
I don't remember what it was about or the context, but I have this vague memory of Lex and Mercy MAYBE having a kid? It may have been the first time I understood there was a hinting of romantic interests between he two and I was looking up how someone may have been connected to Lex. But I could be wrong and mixing two memories together with that of looking up Lex and another memory about possilbe DC parents and their offspring.
head canon
Don't forget that Mercy also appeared in DC's League of Super-Pets
Mercy was a really good background character, and Lex slowly poisoning the well with her was an excellent arc.
From driver to a busines woman
The Right Hand person of a Villian has been referred to as the Dragon. I saw this on the OSP channel.
I feel like much like Harley and Ivy's relationship she would have Talia as her best friend since the two have a common thing of being obedient to there powerful fathers and have a wide amount of skills to be able to fight side by side.
She strikes me as a very intentionally reserved character. I suspect her creation was motivated by the need to have somebody for Lex to pontificate and monologue to, 'tis a shame she's not as prominent or well developed as Harley
feel so hurt that she didnt keep her short hair design orz it was so good
Mercy Graves looks like Imperial officer above waist, and like Ksenia Onatopp - below.
Looking forward to it
Would you consider Mercy Graves as a stand-in for Eve Teschmacher? (A character who played a similar role as an assistant to Lex Luthor.)
Yeah, I definitely would
@SerumLake cool. have Miss Teschmacher and Miss Graves ever met or at least been in the same thing? If so I've never seen/noticed it.
@@ScrinwaipwrI don’t think they have, but I haven’t seen Superman and Lois, or most of the Arrowverse shows so I can’t rule it out
@SerumLake I don't remember Mercy Graves in the CW but Miss Teschmacher was definitely in it.
On my Birthday.
Happy B Day!
@@arachnidcomics6404 Thanks.
Gene Splicing Farmer Brown? Looking at him, I wonder if he was an inspiration for Dr. Animo from the ben 10 series; who also has a thing for splicing animals but more often drastic evolution to street level destructive megafauna.
