@@teteamaster Agreed. The EN voices are great for distinctive cultural accents, but the JP actors have always been better at capturing the emotional weight of the scenes. Hearing Matsya in EN did nothing for me, but hearing him in JP running and crying in desperation chokes me up every time.

That scene with the old lady in Radz-at-Han is made even worse by the very first monster in the dungeon. It calls out for its grandmother when you kill it.
I really wish that rather than everyone just saying "Calm down!" one of the Scions would have rushed the old woman, BACKHANDED her, then said VERY CLEARLY "The monster transformation is caused by literally giving yourself the worst kind of panic attack! Believe in whatever you must to keep yourself from fearing, or ask one of us to knock you out and take you to safety." seriously cause nobody stepped in as she started getting more hysterical, she transformed and set everyone else off...freakin idiot ball being held by everyone in the know...
@@Xenmaru00 Isn't that the purpose of Meteion's despair effect? She echoes the accumulated negatives of the ruined worlds towards Etheriys, causing its life to taint and ruin itself. Hitting grandma would've caused just as much (if not more) panic out of her as trying to calm her. Bonk her out, and it'll just occur again when she wakes. At that point, it's that person against the burdens of despair, and there is very little that could be done by an outside source. If she can't find the strength to continue, then that's that.
@@HintedImage Well that's the thing, the despair effect requires conscious connection for it to activate. if you're unconscious, or emotionally numbed out, it cant take hold. Something like absolute shock, a temporary inability to comprehend the current situation in front of you, leading to a total but temporary paralysis of conscious function, effectively, a strong enough confusion effect, can delay the transformation. its the acknowledgement and unconscious embracing of the absolute, all-encompassing despair that triggers the transformation, the _belief_ that there is no hope, no possibility of escape/survival/victory, that causes the dynamis to react and convert the Sundered into the Terminus Beasts. Knocking someone out before the transformation halts their activation of the dynamis _in that specific case_ only. They are not conscious to trigger the reaction, thus no transformation. as well, as i stated before, being BLANK-shocked, will also delay the reaction, as their minds are "rebooting" and thus not calling out to the dynamis. If someone, preferably Ahewan, had pimp-slapped her out of nowhere, she'd have been shocked enough for them to try to verbally override her fears the same way that Graha later was able to for the man who's son just got turned and then squished. Allaying her fears was impossible at that point, but it wouldnt have been impossible to either knock her out as she got worse, or shock her out of it and get her to push back against the gnawing uncertainty and fear. Knocking her out and then immediately giving a brief explanation to the surrounding people that _giving up on all hope_ is what causes the transformation, would have yes, made everyone tense, but at least planted the seed that they could understand what forces them to mutate. Following up with "anyone who does not believe they can remain calm, step forward, and with no judgment, we will gladly cast a sleeping spell on you for your and everyone's safety". Anyone can succumb to the transformation, but their emotions have to be overflowing with hoplessness-laden fear and despair. the deeper and stronger and _more unchecked_ the feelings are, the more powerful a beast they turn into. the cascade effect is from the fear-tainted-shock of seeing someone just rapidly mutate like that, and losing control of one's senses. but one has to be _conscious_ to transform. the second Granny started getting hysterical, Y'shtola should have slung a sleep spell at her, knocking her out, and stopping the transformation. A quick explanation after that, and the chaos would have been managed much sooner than what actually happened. It's one of those moments where everyone just held the idiot ball and nobody was prepared for decisive action even though they knew the fastest way to stop someone from succumbing is to knock them out or worse, kill them. But even killing them might not work cause the last-second acknowledgement before death might transform them and that _might_ have some kind of regenerative property to it. so it's safer to see someone getting hysterical, and knock them the hell out before they turn.
Btw, if you look on UA-cam for "Answers" - videos: The comment sections below each of them basically turned into a big Endwalker trauma support group. For good reasons. (Also, don't read the comments below those videos until you're done with EW.)
Whenever I fell off throughout the years, the thing that always made me want to come back was watching the ARR opening with Answers in the background. It's the only ffxiv song where I know the lyrics by heart, and the musical piece that carries the heaviest emotional weight for me. So seeing them incorporate it into the story in such a meaningful way after an 8 year spanning emotional journey, I just don't think I'll ever experience something like that with a game again.
In case people didnt realize it: The sequence where we see venat walking at the end and getting hit more and more, those are representing the calamities and the subsequent rejoinings. Remember, with every calamity, haedalyn grew weaker and weaker. EDIT: see blitzwaffens reply for another very good possible explanation for what it represents.
This is not at all what I got from the scene and I think my version is loads better than that. The scene is basically hydaelyn/venat walking through the beginning of all the worlds she has created and looking down on all the plague, and sorrow and suffering that she herself has created and being basically powerless to help mankind because they have to find their own way and answer the question Hermes posited. She gets darker and darker through that scene because the burden is weighing on her extremely heavily, and at this point she is the only one who knows what happened (we weren't born yet). Imagine carrying so much hope on your shoulders but being alone without friends to help carry that burden, but still knowing that you did the right thing. That if you hadn't done it the world would be doomed. At the end when she looks up through all the tar with her blue eyes it represents her resolve to see this through. Regardless of how much she is hurting inside for doing this to everyone. Basically I dont think it was specifically the calamities that hit her. It was just the horror of it all slowly getting to her. But she never relented. She kept walking on.
@@TheSilverwing999 it was 100% the calamities that physically hit her, the visual tells are all there. You can also see her get more and more mentally fatigued, which can easily be attributed to what you said. Her seeing what she had done, the worlds of problems, and the ultimate destruction of each with a new rejoining.
@@chaous2000 She doesn't get hit nearly enough times for all the calamities. It lines upore that the hots she takes are moments when she shields us. Remember every time her blessing protected us she grew weaker after every hit. It's why Midgardsormer scolded us for relying so heavily on the blessing. And it is also why she is walking along with us for the scene where we approach Emet on the first. She was with us every step of the journey.
@@Blitzwaffen that is also a very good potential explanation for what it is. It's plausible it represents both, as i wouldn't put it past SE to not show all 7 hits to leave it up to the imagination. I hope that one day they confirm *exactly* what it represents, but i'm not gonna hold my breath there.
The live, die, and know scene will stay seared in my memory for the rest of my life. I left that scene speechless and shaking in tears with so many unexplained emotions welling up. It was soooo well done.
I loved the detail at the end of Elpis, when Venat was walking through time, each time she was damaged more and more was because of each rejoining damaging her and taking her power away. Im so glad i didnt join the "Hydaelyn is evil" train. In the end Venat was only left with terrible options and she did what others would be too scared to do, it must be a weight even worse than Emets to carry. The entire Elpis arc was incredible.
Interesting, I didn't think of that relating to the rejoinings for whatever reason. I interpreted it as her sharing in the suffering of mankind that she caused as she lived on to look after them in atonement. That she wouldn't rest until she saw to mankind being able to sustain their existence beyond the final days. I suppose showing Venat walking through time being weakened by the rejoinings mirrors that in a way, considering how many millions perished because of them. Perhaps the scene personified both her sharing in the torment she gifted mankind and the literal nature of her growing weaker as a way of saying she isn't omnipotent and experiences pain and suffering the same as anyone else. That could also be a reason, among others, for the parallel between her and the WoL facing Emet.
It’s good to know Venat’s voice actresses sounds great in English and Japanese. I’d say her and the twins sound the best this expansion and I know you’ll be playing it or editing it when you come to that section later with the twins but you’ll know what I’m talking about bc it’s impactful as hell
There's more, Larry. There is so much more. I cannot wait until you see the end. I cannot wait for you to stand at that island on the edge. It's so close now.
Hearing the Japanese voice acting is always so neat, since I play with the EN voices on. There’s *so many* famous Japanese VAs in the cast, I can’t believe it. Maybe someday a JP voiceover NG+ is in my future.
This is a Japanese game, the dialog was written in Japanese first and foremost. The English dub, while of superior quality than the usual, is still a localization. Koji is doing an amazing work and I have nothing but respect for him. However, it also sometimes loses a lot of finer details from the Japanese script. For instance, the scene in Elpis when Venat is asking you to tell her about your adventures on that balcony, in JP she reacts by saying it must have been so nice being able to hear, feel and think about all of that. That very specific choice of words on her part was non existent in the English script, which is a shame. And that's only one example. Do yourself a favor. Replay the whole story in JP.
Small correction: apparently the bit about the volcano that Hythlodaeus mentioned, and the short story involving a volcano, are chronologically *two separate occasions.*
The both voice actor/ actress of amon/fandaniel/Hermes and meteion in Japanese version really nailed these characters. perfectly shifting in 4 different personality of meteion/overmind of meteions/desperate overmind/endsinger, and she is also singingway.
I've only been playing ffxiv for like 3-4 years? but even still the Answers cutscene made me bawl, I still go back and get teary. Venat embodies the ancient Ascian value of doing their best for the people around them but like to the nth degree it's just insane to think about how dedicated and how much hope and faith she has in everyone on the planet
i was so sure the baby and him were going to die. i was crying my eyes out even before they got saved (which made me cry harder). this game has messed with my emotions more than any other one has. I could truly feel the helplessness of the characters and wished i could help but didnt know how

Very late to the party, but just finished EW after starting the free trial just after EW dropped (I had to sit and wait for a bit at level 60 before I could buy the full game because they stopped selling it). God, Venat’s line there just before she becomes Hydaelyn was the *RAWEST* line in any game ever. “No longer shall men have wings.… Henceforth, he shall walk.” And we did, Crystal Mom. We walked all the way to the End, past any who walked before, for those who walk after us.
That answers scene was so powerful for those of us who've been with it from the start. Not gonna lie, I teared up with some pretty convoluted emotions.
Big fan of how Hydaelyn was always this spooky inscrutable goddess people were side-eyeing from the start, only to be revealed that yes, there was a twist with her, but no, the twist was not that she was evil- in fact it was that she's been your partner in crime the entire story, having been informed of your quest and future events and you two basically hatched this entire millenia-long safety plan together. You and her are equals and always have been.
Wow Matsya's voice is completely different in JP. ngl I like the English one better but either way, man that scene where he's running away with the baby was absolutely heart wrenching. With all the death and despair throughout that whole part of the story, having him and the baby also succumb would've been the logical conclusion. Definitely glad that didn't happen.
That part where he's reciting the prayer against despair even as he threatens to turn really got to me. Our Scion cast might be okay (they've more than forged themselves in the fires of the previous expansions) but someone on the ground like Matsuya was *not* fine. They do not have the experiences to guard against despair. But even so, our elephant boi is doing the best he can. I like to believe that reciting the prayer and doing his best delayed his transformation just long enough for a miracle to happen and Estinien appears.
Honestly as amazing as literally everything in the Elpis Arc is, my personal favorite part will be the three of them talking about Azem. I don't remember what the word is for feeling nostalgia for a person you've never met is, but Hades complaining about how insanely ridiculous Azem is at ever turn almost made me tear up every time
I had almost 100% the same exact reactions to literally everything from when G’raha mentioned Elidibus to the Answers sequence that watching your reaction was absolutely uncanny. Amazing.
Mine wasn't... though I admittedly haven't touched a Kingdom Hearts game in like 20 years. More I was just surprised that his unsundered form still looked the same as Solis. I expected him not to have the same face as before.
With all the homages that FFXIV loves to do to previous Final Fantasies, I can't help but wonder if Meteion (or one of her sisters) is a call out Jenova. She is literally a Calamity from the sky...
Imma need Larry to post part 3 so I can tear up and listen to him and his friends say bad words in excitement 3000 more times. I loved this story. It was really well done and the end of it, that last raid and the SPOILER fight is such a frickin blast. It's cliche, but ireally do wish I could wipe my memory and play through it again.
Actually in the Trust menu you can switch between avatar and scenario mode. Avatar mode is the system we are used to, where we have to train our trust members. Scenario mode can be done as if you are at the dungeon at the moment, for example doing the 71 dungeon with Lyse as an option. Or in this case the Ascians.
@@Gyrono Yes, but I meant not doing it while it's part of the story than "time travelling" to do that.^^ SE unlocked scenario mode this time from the beginning, than needing to level up all trust members to max level, like in ShB.

You have now reached the point where you can understand that the entire underlying theme of Endwalker is "Answers." Which, as a statement, really works across multiple levels.
What I love about the time travel segment this game was that it didn't change the past or future, you're already living the timeline where you have and will travel back.
Also going into that chapter we were of the mind that the past can be changed, which made it even better. Despite the allusions to the eventuality we got, it still was unprecedented given the nature of time travel in the established narrative. All that's to say they were able to subvert expectations without doing anything and retcon how time travel works while still having it make sense in the most interesting way possible. If this isn't incredible narrative work I'm not sure what is!
I had a hunch Emet's at least a Black Mage/Battle Mage around ShB expansion. Black attire, stubborn to move on and his magic is vast enough to create Amarout. But to think that ShB collector's mount and he also a DRK is a pleasant surprise.

Okay but I think everyone thought the same thing about Emet being norted. I too would love to have way more about Elpis!! Everything that happened during elpis was definitely my favorite part of the expansion.
I love how 90% of the comments are just people trying to force their (probably bad) opinions on JP vs EN dubbing on each other instead of actually about the content itself, stay classy

@@zackfair6203 The meaning of life and what makes it worth living.
That sequence in Elpis really put in perspective why Midgardsormr and Minfilia were so adamant about trusting Hydaelyn. She really was Crystal Mom the whole time.
I have to admit I was worried when I heard that voice after Zodiark was beaten since I thought that was Hydaelyn but it was actually a different voice as Elpis showed.
Oh thank GOD someone else thought that might have been Hydaelyn! I was beginning to despair that it was just me.
@@gateauxq4604 literally just today one of my store managers asked "without spoiling it for me. Is Hydaelyn the bad guy?" I just went "i can neither confirm or deny. however, from a certain perspective...you could say she _was_ the bad guy." Which she was...from a certain perspective. She did play a villainous role, to her own people, in the end...
I didn't think so. I suspected Hydaelyn of being not good, but that voice didn't sound like her.
VERY COOL, LARRY!!!!

And then the emotional trauma continues in Ultima Thule. Endwalker broke me and I thanked Yoshi for the pain haha
I'm really surprised we didn't get to hear Larry realize he could go into a dungeon with Emet-Selch, Hythlodaeus, and Venat at his side. Was expecting some very high-pitched squeals of glee.
I never ever do trust dungeons. I did that dungeon with those 3.
Seeing how you got the aether current at 1:01 made me laugh because I didn’t consider that. I just yeeted myself off a high place because I thought it was unreachable otherwise!

“Do not squander it. The legacy I leave you.” Has got to be my favorite line from this whole expansion.
Watching this man absolutely lose his shit in the exact same ways I did brings me a very specific joy
People run the Lvl 87 dungeon with real people on their first run? How can you not DPS alongside the bestest bard and the edgiest of Dark Knights (and mom)? :O
I can really recommend going in with Trust once in Secnario Mode, their bickering is so adorable.
Also, "I want this to be the whole game" is such a mood. It sucks that the Ascians caused all those calamities and all, but I can understand why they want stuff like Elpis and Amaurot back. Seriously, those places are so epic! (Also Hythlodaeus. Who wouldn't want Hythlodaeus back?)
I did every thing with trusts my 1st time, since I main DRK, it helps to learn it for when having to go back in roulettes lol.
Man I loved that guy. Such a little scamp. Like Azem. Can see why we were best buds.
As long as There's an Emet-Selch who can be trolled, yes. I want more Hythloadeus.
How could I not dps besides these guys? Probably because I was tanking for them. :)

Eva: She's gonna die in a terrible way : )

i just love the fact that they switch the VA oh hydaelyn to the legendary inoue kikuko, she did a fantastic job with the role
Hydaelyn, 17 years old!
Wow, Matsya's voice is COMPLETELY different in japanese. He sounds more like a young adult man in english.
It's so weird hearing a voice that isn't with an Indian accent for that zone. I really appreciate going through it in English for that touch, now.
The younger voice in JP which make the scene wayyyyy more fuk up
@@teteamaster Agreed. The EN voices are great for distinctive cultural accents, but the JP actors have always been better at capturing the emotional weight of the scenes. Hearing Matsya in EN did nothing for me, but hearing him in JP running and crying in desperation chokes me up every time.
@@rudlw7937 I've gotten tons of emotion from English
I freaked out so much when Hythlodaeus was revealed, because talking with the shade Emet made made me really like the guy. And now I need to distract myself, since my throat is hurting from all the feelings I got in that last scene with Venat. :'(
That scene with the old lady in Radz-at-Han is made even worse by the very first monster in the dungeon.
Believe in whatever you must to keep yourself from fearing, or ask one of us to knock you out and take you to safety."
seriously cause nobody stepped in as she started getting more hysterical, she transformed and set everyone else off...freakin idiot ball being held by everyone in the know...
Kikuko Inuoe does such a great job as Venat, thank you Larry for this.
one more reason to love Venat
She's an absolute legend of a voice actor, so glad we had her for this. The entire JP voice cast is full of power houses
she has that motherly vibes.
@@Larryzaur That being said, you really should check out the Answers sequence again with the Enlish VA on. It's AMAZING.
Belldandy is one of my all time favorite anime characters, so is Venat, it all made so much sense somehow.
The meaning of answers changes each time there's an expansion. Now we have an actual answer, but all the other interpretations are just as important.
In case people didnt realize it:
The sequence where we see venat walking at the end and getting hit more and more, those are representing the calamities and the subsequent rejoinings.
"You wanna hug G'raha Tia?"
No, Larry. We wanna do what your friend wanted to do to him.
It was so fun seeing Larry's various guesses as to what the logo for EW actually is.
She was in a shit situation, with only shit options.
Like she says, what she did was not heroic or kind, but it was necessary.

So we just like vibing in volcanos? Yeah that checks out.
@@gateauxq4604 I mean...Hell's Lid...
"There's another zone after this!"
My thoughts exactly.
The both voice actor/
actress of amon/fandaniel/Hermes and meteion in Japanese version really nailed these characters. perfectly shifting in 4 different personality of meteion/overmind of meteions/desperate overmind/endsinger, and she is also singingway.
I wasn't looking forward to the loporrits at all, but after seeing them, they're one of the highlights of the expansion for sure.
''Zodiark, sadly, is no more...'', that line should not be that funny, but leave it to a mouse/rabbit sucking off helium and it deserves an emmy!
Lopporits are one of the best things of this expansion.
The summoning invocation in the Azem crystal was probably what what the original Azem used to called Emet for help.
Casting the legendary Inoue Kikuko as the ultimate mommy of Etheyris was dare I say an inspired choice.
With Answers, Endwalker cemented itself as my favorite expansion. Just, the sheer amount of set-up and payoff in this one expansion is breathtaking.
“It’s an elephant on the back”
[spits out water] *OH NOOOO I DIDN’T NOTICE THAT THE FIRST TIME I FOUGHT THAT*
9:34 is one of the biggest "oh FUCK" moments in the entire game for me. After killing the parents, I was afraid ANYTHING was on the table.
i was so sure the baby and him were going to die. i was crying my eyes out even before they got saved (which made me cry harder). this game has messed with my emotions more than any other one has. I could truly feel the helplessness of the characters and wished i could help but didnt know how
@@SeraphimStardustArtist the messed up bit is that the baby beginning to transform made the most sense out of anything. What is an infant but a literal power plant of unfocused emotion?
Here i am, crying again just from a video.. im not just crying because its a tragic story but also because of how well this story is actually written and quite literally because my brain still doesnt wanna comprehend the epic shit that happened in endwalker, its almost like they knew what they wanted to put into endwalker when they were merely at ARR.. and thats almost 9 years ago
"The moon is a spaceship? This is Gurren Lagann"
AND IT GOES EVEN MORE GURREN LAGANN NEAR THE END.
I just love how chaotic u guys in dungeons its so fun to watch :)
*(hears Larry's crying whimpers near end of cutscene)*
can relate
I don't remember what the word is for feeling nostalgia for a person you've never met is, but Hades complaining about how insanely ridiculous Azem is at ever turn almost made me tear up every time
Elpis was the most fun I had in XIV. I loved every minute of it. I wish the entire expansion had taken place there.
I had almost 100% the same exact reactions to literally everything from when G’raha mentioned Elidibus to the Answers sequence that watching your reaction was absolutely uncanny. Amazing.
You know what's very funny? My character is named Elpis so I'd get stupid dialogues like "Welcome to Elpis, Elpis!", it was so freaking funny
So far, every reaction to Emet's original form has been immediately thinking of Xehanort.

The fact that all 3 of our Elpis pals became trial bosses hurts...
Man, just rewatching these scenes alone is making me tear up
With all the homages that FFXIV loves to do to previous Final Fantasies, I can't help but wonder if Meteion (or one of her sisters) is a call out Jenova. She is literally a Calamity from the sky...
Makes us wonder about Ultima in the Ivalice raids too....
I mean, the Meteia are lowkey Necron but with an actual plot explanation this time.
The music in the different areas are so good, they gave flashbacks to the other ff games and goosebumps. Simply amazing
I'm glad I am not the only one who glamoured the robes to wear during the Elpis zone.
Not doing Ktisis Hyperboreia with Trust is close to a sin. How could you pass up on the chance to do it with Emet-Selch, Hythlodaeus, and Venat?!
Because you can always do it later.
@@GayLPer Not congruent with storyline unless you do NG+, which is not possible atm.
@@Gyrono Yes, but I meant not doing it while it's part of the story than "time travelling" to do that.^^

I'm fine, I just watched Quazii go through th- aaaand I'm crying again.
as someone who only started last year, it was crazy seeing you pick up on all these musical queues and lore details that i completely missed. it must hit completely diff playing after all these years
You have now reached the point where you can understand that the entire underlying theme of Endwalker is "Answers."
Which, as a statement, really works across multiple levels.
This reminded me of the Alexander story.
You know the last scene is good when even Larry gets struck speechless... XD
I had a hunch Emet's at least a Black Mage/Battle Mage around ShB expansion. Black attire, stubborn to move on and his magic is vast enough to create Amarout. But to think that ShB collector's mount and he also a DRK is a pleasant surprise.
even just rewatching the scene with answers in the background gave me chills, god this game is just sooo good at story telling. I was so, so satisficed with the end of EW and everything leading up to it, even though I wanted MORE if they ended the whole thing there, I would have been okay with it, just glad there is more to come! I also love Larry's commentary XD
Negative 100 points for not using trust in the elpis dungeon Emet has so much sass to say during the dungeon
Seeing you play through Endwalker is great and it's really fun to see these bits of story again. I really hope you enjoy/enjoyed your playthrough and I can't wait to see your reaction to the rest of all the new and future content!

And i do.
Okay but I think everyone thought the same thing about Emet being norted. I too would love to have way more about Elpis!! Everything that happened during elpis was definitely my favorite part of the expansion.
The last patch show the hidden, hideous part of elpis, if you haven't begin the quest
Elpis is a Coffee Date AU with Ascians that ends with a firey train crash.
I love how 90% of the comments are just people trying to force their (probably bad) opinions on JP vs EN dubbing on each other instead of actually about the content itself, stay classy

I started playing FFXIV during ARR and played each expansion at launch, but I’m ashamed to admit I skipped a lot of cutscenes. With EW I decided to dedicate myself to following the story and omg I was a mess by the end. Idk how people who have followed it through the entire thing could recover lol
every time I watch a react my wounds opens and I finished the story a week ago :crying:
Prior to EW this game made me choke up maybe twice (pulling the eyes off Estinien and the end of Shadowbringers). EW I was a fucking mess, particularly near the end of Elpis through to the end.
Larry, I love you and your friends' antics and all the joy you bring, but watching this vid reminds me why I can't forgive you.
Because ever since the media tour video you did on summoner, I can't go into Titan mode without being compelled to say "CLAP CLAP CLAP".

Just something I noticed about the MSQ, Y'shtola told us that when we were battling Emet Selch she could see our soul barely clinging onto life and she's glad we couldn't see it ourselves, I like to believe what she saw is that scene of Venat walking. Our soul of light barely clinging to life. Or at least something similar.
I know full well what will happen in the video, watched it and cry again. The OST and the storytelling approaches they choose really make this not only a fanservice but a good ending to a story arc.
