Nice video! What exactly does grid cloth do as opposed to full diffusion? And when would you use it, such as for a talking head? Thanks.

That sort of depends on which grid cloth you're talking about. The most common grid cloths are light grid and full grid (which correspond in strength the way you think they would). There's been lots of talk and opinions about which work for what, but really they all serve the same function. Full diffusion is a bit stronger (and lossy). Which you choose really depends on your visual taste, how much light loss you can deal with, and how far you can back up the lamp and subject from the diffusion panel. The difference won't be as strong as Opal to Grid, but there is a slight difference. I use grid cloth all the time in a book light and with double diffusion since it's less lossy. Check out our videos on those two topics to see what I mean. How you use anything stronger than Opal makes more of a difference than the exact diffusion used. You can buy unsewn cloth cheaply from Hollywood rag suppliers and fabric stores. I keep Opal, light grid, silk, and 216 (i.e. full diffusion) in my kit. That covers my bases.

Video Gear I have used most of the diffusions on your list but never grid cloth. Some people say it focus the light more. I usually use road rag yellow colored silk to soften my led light. I was wondering about characteristics of the softness of the grid.

I could say all kinds of fluffy words about the characteristic, but really it's best if you just get a sheet of 4x4 cloth and try it yourself. Grid cloth is the same thing as sail cloth, which is why it probably ended up being used on set and renamed. 216 (full diffusion) is meant to emulate tracing paper. Half soft frost is almost the same as translucent shower curtain. I often like to use bleached and unbleached muslin for diffusion and bounce. It's cheap to get at any fabric store. Roger Deakins often mentions it when talking about the lighting for his movies.

Fixed color grading and tweaked audio. We're under new management and it was time to clean things up! ...that, and we added branding stuff so our videos have a consistent look and feel. The content is the same.
