Don McVey and Kieron Jansch compared every LEE Filters Diffusion while lighting the same model with a single M8 HMI. It's an invaluable reference for better understanding the range of diffusion effects available.

Thanks so much, this will really help me out. as a low budget/student filmmaker who can't purchase every filter that's out there this really helps me see what I might want to go for. I was following along with my swatch book!

    Great comparison. :)
How large were the sheets of diffusion that you were using, and how far away from the subject were they? Obviously that's going to have an effect on the softness of the light source, but I didn't hear it mentioned, and there's a quite sizeable catchlight in her eye on some shots.

How were the filters used? Clipped on the barndoors? What was the distance between subject and lightsource?Thx.

    • @donmcvey
      @donmcvey 8 років тому +3

+Koen De Saeger Read my blog post in description. I rarely clip to barn doors. Somewhat pointless as you don't get a bigger source of light - which is instrumental in soft lighting. I also think clipping to barndoors takes out more light as you don't get a large luminous surface.
99% of the time I hang diff from a C-Stand and arm. Slide on the roll, pull it down, crock clip it secure. That way you can roll it back up and re-use!

This video's a tad bit annoying because things aren't shown side by side, despite the speaker saying that's a way to see the difference.

    Hi Don McCey,
please tell me about light meter and light.
    means... i want to know...
if light meter shoes reading 2 lux light means what kv light is there
    means...
if i am useing 4k HMI with 216 diffusion plus ND 6(2 stops cut) but light meter shows 2 lux,
so how much kv i am using for the shot?
again i am Asking in Detail...
if i go to location hunting and i found 3.5 lux or 2.8 lux (what ever) light in my meter (with out any light, only natural light)
what is it means, how much kv light is there?
means ... if i need 3.5 lux light, so how much kv light i've to use?

+prasad mhetras Light meters measure in stops of light. I was using a meter in these tests to get a rough idea of how much light is being taken out. But I explain in my blog post on the tests that I wasn't exactly scientific. We had spill on the floor which I allowed as I didn't want her face to be very contrasty.
When I'm deciding how much light I will need for any given situation, I mostly use my experience in the real world and make an educated guess. But things like the Arri photometrics calculator are extremely useful in helping out! Google it and try it yourself!
As for knowing exactly how much extra lux I need to bump up a stop or 2 in light - I really have no idea. I'm sure there are ways to calculate that stuff, but I've never been massively technical :)
I mainly use light meters in the real world to give me lighting ratios or to do location recces.

You should have tested this with some kind of light and maybe christmas lights in the background, so we could see the effect of the diffusion on lights.
