THE WORKER DIDN'T INVEST ANY MONEY TO GET THE COMPANY GOIN . IF THE COMPANY GOES BANKRUPT, THE INVESTORS PAY THE ENORMOUS DOWNSIDE TO THEIR CREDITORS . Also she butted in because he wouldn’t stop side stepping the question and she wanted to make it clear what the question was and what the only logical answer can be. No one is going to willingly give up a majority of their wealth so that everyone can be “equal”, More like equally poor. Equity is better than equality when it comes to the economy because some people are just plain better than others in the workplace.

The fact that he didn't side with either point of view, however, made the debate credible. We're not used to journalism these days. Libertarians always gush about freedom and liberty while saying to gut government and allow free market to reign.
      However, when they say less government, they mean less democracy. Less one person, one vote.
      When they say free markets, they mean money power, which is not as equal as one person, one vote. It puts power in the hands of money. Oligarchic power. This is why when the ussr became Russia, it went from the second world to the third world, right back to where it was 100 years ago, with oligarchs.

    This Pr. Richard Wolff is the example of why our young people are brainwashed about socialism at the universities. He misrepresents it, intentionally or sincerely, but he does not understand what true socialism is. Neither does he understand what capitalism is. I came from the most socialist country Soviet Russia. I know how it feels to live in the socialist system. God forbid! Unfortunately, with all due respect to Charles Paine he made big mistake by not formulating the basic differences between Capitalism and Socialism. As a result, the ensuing discussion has no benchmark and it is pointless. He should have explained that Socialism cancels ALL private property, nationalises all means of production that belong now to nobody from now on, but to the nameless government of appointed bureaucrats who appropriate the industrial profit. Then in order to defend this theft of national wealth this government makes the legal system depended on its whim. No more independent justice. Further, in order to defend this injustice ALL dissenters in Media, in Press, in Art are suppressed and persecuted. No more freedom of expression. Only arrests, prisons, dictatorship of few over the nation. Then, shortage of food, medicine, of everything. Again, the ruling nomenclatura unleashes lies about the real crisis. After that, the dictators start an aggressive foreign policy: wars.. Is that what American Socialists want? Also, Scandinavian countries are NOT Socialists. They are capitalist countries with general social programs and huge taxes in order to support these programs.

    • @RuneForumwalker
      @RuneForumwalker 5 років тому

      @mld It's called labor theory of value in which a class of people (property owners) gain value just from owning a resource. The one person brings upon many people, has them convert the resource into a more valuable resource to the trade, the worker gets paid a percentage of the value he creates, while the owner pockets the rest as profit. The owner is also free, at any time, to get rid of the worker to bring in another that they could give a lesser "wage" to.
      A more equitable system would allow the worker ownership of the "means of production" ie partial ownership of the business.
      This works as well for landlords that get income just from owning a property.
      Both taxes and roperty are theft. Now one shouldn't confuse *private* property with personal property. It's liberal propaganda that had often conflated the two to make people not understand these concepts.

    • @TheMrMacintosh
      @TheMrMacintosh 5 років тому

      If you're interested, I can definitely give you some good arguments for socialism. They're very simple, easy and I won't sidestep your questions.

    • @TheMrMacintosh
      @TheMrMacintosh 5 років тому +4

      @Roma Rose It's very simple. In order to produce value you need labor. You can buy factories and materials as much as you want, you can't increase the value of those materials without labor. Therefore, it is the workers who add value to the products a company sells. The profits a company makes (mostly) come from that added value. Which means if the workers got paid the full amount of their value, the company wouldn't make a profit. The question then becomes why do the workers not have a right to that profit? Why does the person who owns the factory get to decide what to do with the profits? There two big answers to this that I know of, both not entirely correct:
      1. "Because they entered into a voluntary contract". This isn't really the case because employees don't have another option. All companies are capitalist and won't ever offer you the full value of your labor. You need to work to survive and most workers lack the funds to start their own business, so it's hard to say this is a voluntary choice.
      2. "Because the employer took all of the risk". Well, not only do employees run a risk too (losing their income at almost any time) but the employer gets to make all of the decisions. The employee can be fired at any time for "restructuring", which he has no control over, while the owner has a large degree of control over going bankrupt.
      Socialism, for the most part, is a response to this unfairness. Instead of one capitalist owning a factory, the factory is owned and operated by the workers. This doesn't mean all workers are exactly equal. You can still have managers for example, but all workers own some share of the factory and therefore can vote on what happens to profits, elect the managers and the CEO and decide company policy. This is what is meant by "workers own the means of production". Companies will then not only operate in function of one single person, but rather in function of everyone working there and by extension the community around the factory. The workers will get more money, more responsibilities and more motivation to go to work. As someone who'd like to maximize happiness in the world, I see this as an absolute positive.

    Socialists always deny capitalists credit for the risk they undertake when building the institutions that provide jobs. Workers are NOT partners in the workplace with the owners. Workers take no risk. Owners take all the risk of failure. If the workplace produces a LOSS at the end of the year the workers still get paid by law. The owners have to cover the losses. The workers can leave and find other work. They are NOT left holding the bag if the business fails. The owners are on the hook. That is risk. That means on the other end of the spectrum if the workplace produces a profit, the owners are entitled to that profit. Workers assume no risk of loss and so assume no benefit of profit.

    • @andcouncil1

      BelleElle Worships - And what about Wolf, the guy is a battered Marxist zealot and adherent of the religion of the Left. His moral framework is impaired so much so he can't recognise the reason the socialists in America garnered votes in the early 1900s was that they lie about what they're about.
      And he carries their banner today, typically ignoring the 3rd player in the equation-NATURE. The uneven distribution of wealth in a society (or any system) is a natural phenomenon called the _"Pareto Principle"_ or the _"80/20 Rule"._
      To argue that it is somehow unfair that capitalism creates the disparity in wealth is to ignore the role that "natural laws" play. And ignores the fact that the empirical evidence doesn't support his assertion. Just see how the children of NoKo's and China's top officials flaunt their wealth jet-setting around the world. The guy is brainwashing young people at the university where he teaches Marxist crap.

      as point out by Richard Wolff, socialists do not use force to get their way. Every socialist revolution has sprung up organically, or come from regular elections. It is capitalism that forces itself on everyone. Case in point: why don't we have a Communist party? They were directly targeted, jailed, and assassinated by the capitalists. Every time socialism "fails" in a country, the CIA is behind it, funding the opposition, and often directly assassinating wildly popular duly elected leaders.

    Speaking of living wage, Kennedy says, "Why would you stop at 15 dollars? Why not 25 dollars or 150 dollars?" Kennedy is contradicting herself as a capitalist because capitalists who own and operate companies would not allow themselves to pay their workers such wages. They don't even want to pay 15 dollars. Workers have been trying to get fair wages for a long time and the capitalists always oppose. Here's a personal example: I worked for Tortilla Jo's Restaurant in Downtown Disney for 7 months. I started as a dishwasher for $11.50 an hour. After 6 months I was "Promoted" (sarcasm emphasized) to a Preparation Cook position which came with more responsibilities. I asked for a raise and the Administration and the Executive Chef stated they would look into it. After another month I asked for a raise again and the answer was, "No. We are sorry but we cannot give you a raise at this time." I immediately resigned. This type of unfairness happens in all companies and businesses under Capitalism. Yes, there are always jobs and positions available, but there is also plenty of unwillingness to pay what is right and fair.

      @Kraisedion 5 років тому

      @Nild Malindi I am actually Norwegian, which is likely the country that got the closest to Socialism in the 20th century - no country ever finished the transition; and the public as a whole still hold the majority of wealth within the economy in common - a big part of which is thanks to our largely collectivized energy sector. Democratic Socialist ideas, such as collectivizing oil, lead to us now having a 1 Trillion USD oil fund.
      Why would I move to a country even further away from my ideals?
      I'm not a Democratic Socialism myself, I'm a Libertarian Socialist - which means I want a small government, and an economy consisting of co-operatives. Therefor I am not a big fan of Norway either (granted, some of our biggest brands are Co-operatives).
      The important thing to understand is that socialism refers to an extremely wide school of different economic systems, from Mutualism, to Syndicalism, to Collectivism, to State Socialism to Communism and more.
      Socialism refers to any economy where the workers, consumers and/or public as a whole own and control the means of production. None of these were the case in the USSR, nor in China, nor in any of the Communist countries, nor in Social Democracies - but at least the latter had a high degree of collective ownership under democratic control + co-determination (partial workplace democracy) which to me places them closer to the finish line - despite not being a fan of their State Managed finish line at all.

    It’s easy, each corporate board has a representative from each union with a member on the workforce and a representative elected from the non-unionized employees (making them a union). That puts two worker representatives on each board. Give each board member a veto that can only be overridden by a unanimous vote (excluding the vetoing member). Problem solved, in less than two years the income gap shrinks to 1950s size.
