Cost is never questioned when it comes to military spending, defense spending, foreign aid to Israel and Saudi Arabia, or subsidies for major corporations and industries. Cost is only questioned when it comes to social spending.

When Herman was insisting in the question "How would you pay for it?" I couldn't stop thinking how ridiculous it is to live in the richest country in the World, that has a military spending of 721.5 BILLION DOLLARS (more than the next 9 countries TOGETHER!), and still asking how that same country could afford basic human needs, all of this while having other less rich countries, like in Scandinavia, where they have done this with so much success.
They know very well that they can afford it, they just don't want people to understand it.

Here’s a few problems that socialists have with their arguments that people don’t talk about
There is really a 1% in socialist countries to the other 99% are all paid fairly equally but they are paid almost nothing and they are at starvation wages
In capitalist countries there may be at 1% but there is also an 85% they can buy their own food in supermarkets that are chock-full of food
And buy their own clothes this is not possible in Socialism countries
Also in socialist countries no you don’t have a dictatorship of a chief executive officer or a board of stockholders but we do have one dictator in a city many many
Miles from where you live Who makes every decision for you personally and thus nothing gets done
Under capitalism every single person has a better standard of living
Take a look at South Korea versus North Korea or these workers in South Korea really exploited because the ones in North Korea cannot buy food

Under Socialism there is no other point of view than that of the state. Point blank.

Yesterday’s Show you don’t understand how taxes work. There are payroll taxes, sales use taxes and an array of domestic and international taxes that companies all pay regardless of their annual income. They didn’t pay any income taxes because they had deductible expenses that allow for companies ....all companies....to invest in their company to make the final product or service more efficient and more varied in product or service. Amazon paid billions in new tax revenue to local state and federal treasuries that would not have existed without their incredible enterprise. They paid a highly disproportionate share too. You think they should be taxed more because their success is paying off for you and everyone. That’s a great incentive for the next Jeff Bezos....yeah, good idea.

I’m older now, not as Darwinian. I struggle with a CEO who did not invest his money. All risks he takes are on the stockholders dime. Does he deserve a 50X salary exit package? Maybe? It’s interesting.
Did the Boeing CEO cut corners on 737 for profits vs Safety? Does he deserve a huge payout
Considering he was ok with corners cut to avoid new training to Airlines? 350 died. If he gets the
Boot, he will leave with massive pay out. He was 100% about profit.

The fellow the group chosen as president was allowed to take a team to a larger city for meetings and training so I raised my hand and said I would also like to go to represent Labor. He told me that labor was not smart enough to attend. He then smiled and people chuckled and he looked at his Dad who was the adult there who smiled back at him approvingly. I stopped going to the meetings and when my Dad asked me why I told him what transpired and that this is not a paying job and I nor my family relied on me keeping this job and I will not work for someone who disrespects me. Security is not only political but it also could be financial security. Why do you think wealthy people are wealthy in general. Because they were willing to risk. nothing ventured nothing gained. And when you own your own company you don't get any government handouts the government won't give you s***. my dad was a small business owner all his life so I grew up around it and he never made a lot of money but I can tell you he never got any government help. and all he ever made I think the most he ever made was $50,000 in one year most years it was 25,000 and he had to raise seven kids on that. He happened to be not so successful and becoming wealthy but he had a very fulfilling life and he loved his job he loved his family and at the end of the day you felt rewarded. And he employed some people actually the funny thing was is, he would joke around the family and he would always say his mantra for his business was, custom homes built by the homeless. Lol and it was true he employed a lot of homeless people. So he did provide a job for people that really needed a job. There's nothing wrong with capitalism I'm sure we both agree on that but I figured I would tell my story you have a good day.

I don't get why you all are complaining and whining. You think your labour is worth more? Ask for more. If they don't wanna pay more then just go work for someone who thinks it's worth more. If you don't find someone willing to pay you a fair price for your labour? Isn't the America a free country? Start your own business and you can even choose to share the profit to your employees who you pay a minimum wage while paying for students their college educations with the profit you have left.
So for Germany, states decide on school policy, they had on lift their 'ban' in tuition because it was unconstitutional. An non EU cit. pays 1,5k euro tuition, EU citizen pay around 250(+-100) euro in other school fees and indeed the first year is free the next aren't then tuition starts. You might want to add tho that it's a VET system where they are schooled in a dual system to directly fit in specific jobs in specific industries. Their economy also benefits from the fact that their minimum wage is nearly half of what you commies are demanding. (It's gone from 8,5 to like 9 in 2019 I think). (that is before taxes indeed)
Also fun fact, as a(West-)EU cit I can inform you that taxes are sky-high, we have a low-schooled labor crisis which is why we make schools cheap, because only highly capitalistic enterprises and big-earners actually carry more then they collect.
EU is also rapidly converting to right-wing because they are tired of being lied to by the left-wingers, we are losing economically, more than half of starts-ups go bankrupt within a couple of years.

@chris smith US style capitalism ended those jobs in favor of outsourcing, contractors, gig economy, automation and freelancers once firms realized that those would result in significant cost savings to labor as well as lower likelihood of labor mobilization. In the aggregate, US style capitalism does not reward being a good wage laborer or having company loyalty as the US economy is doing well and levels of income inequality within the US have soared, but layoffs continue, wages have stagnated, social mobility has plummeted below European levels and large corporations like Amazon and Walmart continue to increase size and become more monopolistic while having extremely exploitative labor practices.
Only a minority of people will succeed as freelancers and entrepreneurs, with most small businesses failing with the greatest reasons being no market need and lack of sufficient capital. For the vast majority of people who are not capitalists or well-paid workers in this system, socialism and collective bargaining makes economic sense, as corporations, market forces and HR firms are all collective organizing to pay workers as little as possible while extracting as much labor as possible.

@@greenbrickbox3392 there's no such thing as US style capitalism. There is capitalism, crony capitalism and corporatism or a plutocracy, take your pick. We are not currently under the first system. there is nothing wrong with unions and collective bargaining but it never happens in the private, and lobbyists make sure that the politicians play ball so that this never happens. The biggest problem that you advocates of socialism can't seem to grasp is that big government is socialism, and big government is 100% responsible for all of the ills that you outlined in your post. America needs to get back to the system that the framers of our constitution set up. You are right in that not everybody can be an independent contractor and be responsible for their own financial destiny. Why does everyone ignore the fact, that it takes capital to start a business (unless you're a reseller), and that capital has to come from somewhere?
If 4 people come together, make loans and put forward capital to build a business (form an LLC or something), they carry the risk. If the business fails, they lose all their money and owe to the bank. The workers they employed lose only their jobs, but owe absolutely nothing to the banks.
The business owners carry all the risk, and thus, they get a larger portion of the profits, as they need to repay the banks to break even.
In the system they talk about, where wealth is distributed to all workers, you'd need your entire life to break even. Which person in their right mind would go into huge debt to take a risk at building a business, when all profits will be shared, they carry all the risk, and when it would take them an eternity to make any money?

Tax dollars do not pay for federal government expenses because the federal department of treasury prints the currency. Tax dollars to the IRS exist only to remove money from circulation in order to prevent inflation. That means the federal government can pay for whatever it wants to pay for, currently trillions to the Pentagon, as long as it prevents inflation through some taxation. The fact that mainstream media debates have to go in this format of one talking point per person without addressing what the other person has said is why mainstream media is failing. If we actually let these people go at it off script we could clearly see who is the better debater.
What generally happens when you include Dr.Wolff in a debate on this topic is that he just steam rolls the competition, because he has dedicated his life to this question and simply knows more information that just about anyone else on the topic. The days where you had legitimately stimulating discussions on these topics died with the era of Freidman and Sowell, but I genuinely would have loved to see some of the more notable libertarians and socialists of today, such as Dr.Wolff, have these discussions.
What we are left with atm is a modern context that exemplifies the failures of both classical liberalism and keynesian thought that leaves us looking for answers at both ends of the extremes, with both having some very salient points. It's just that you'll never realise that both sides have great arguments if you only stick to watching Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc.
The truth remains, as it always has, that some systems do certain things better than others. The problem with ideology is that we are blind to the fact that one system isnt sufficient to achieve optimal outcomes, and it leads us into thinking that our system would do something, in particular, in a better way without first consulting the evidence. We are left thinking that government regulations are optimal, or that free market health insurance is optimal, and ignore the overwhelming evidence that these are both inefficient and suboptimal for the sake of societal wellbeing. Or maybe we are just deeply flawed and can never optimally use either system to achieve goals.

Respect to Bianca at the end for changing the wording to Human "needs". It is fair to say that people "need" healthcare and education, but it is wrong to say that people have a RIGHT to those things. The reason the "cost" is important is because SOMEONE has to provide those things. If you put 10 people in a room and shoot one of them in the leg, that guy NEEDS healthcare, but if NONE of the 10 have medical training, then he isn't going to GET healthcare even if everyone agrees he should have it. This is where Bianca's point at the end fails. It's great to say that everyone SHOULD be free to pursue their passion and what they want to do, but what if no one WANTS to put in the time and effort to be a teacher and/or doctor. Or (as is already happening) what if too FEW people do so to provide for everyone that NEEDS it. Africa for example has a serious problem with doctors LEAVING once they're trained.

    Couple reactions:
-The panel didn't do enough to distinguish between social democracy (essentially capitalism with a strong safety net/robust public programs) and socialism (workers owning the means of production, workers retaining the full value of their labor, workers determining the rules of the workplace).
-Herman Cain asked a perfectly valid question - "How will we pay for these social programs?". The issue is that there weren't any social democrats in the room, only socialists so there was no answer to be had. Ironically there's plenty of social democrats that have outlined exactly how these programs could be paid for. In settings like these, it would have been nice to have an actual social democrat to present this rundown.
-I didn't like the young girl's emotional arguments on a business show. It just comes off as childish in that setting. Instead she should have used more logical arguments like, "Why should workers only get a fraction of the profits when the business cannot produce value/exist without them?". Would the wealthy investors/businessmen still be opposed to what she's saying? Of course. But the everyday, working conservative may have a vastly different opinion.
-Any top down, authoritarian system should be discouraged as much as reasonably possible. I have no problem with encouraging individuals to create worker co-ops as an alternative to traditional/capitalist/top down business structures, however I wouldn't mandate either type of business structure. Let the market decide what does/doesn't work.

Capitalism is the best model in an imperfect world. How do you improve Capitalism? You encourage people to go out and do the right thing. The individual can pick up the slack when inequalities exist - they can do so by their own free will, by giving of their own time, resources and talent. If that's the only counterpoint someone has, it's a desperate, impotent one. It's a distraction and has no bearing in the debate. Furthermore, the claim also lays open the possible argument that the US, being as large as it is, is too weak to accomplish the achievements that Germany has been enjoying as of late. You can't claim that US capitalism is strong while claiming it can't do what tiny little Germany has accomplished. Either US capitalism is strong enough to give everyone guaranteed healthcare, education, housing, and food, or it's too weak to do so while, somehow, Germany has been strong enough to do so.

I think what he meant was that we have the rights that we give to ourselves. Rights that we as a society collectively agree everyone should have.
In that sense I agree the natural world doesn't give us any rights. But it's a little unfair to jump on the questioner because we commonly refer to these as "human rights" knowing that we don't get them just by virtue of being human but rather because we agree to give ourselves those rights.
Since we have now as a society achieved a certain level of abundant production, we can afford to give certain rights to everyone such as health care and education.

Let me preface this by saying that in most regards I fall on the conservative side of the political spectrum. That being said though I do not believe there is any such thing as a human right. The world owes you nothing, just as you owe the world nothing. At the end of the day everyone is going to die and the world will keep going without you.

@@SolidAir54321 The term "Human Rights" literally is saying that just because you live it is a right. The idea that society as a whole or in general thinks it is a right because of economic standing says it is a feel good right. Problem is then how is it going to be paid for? How was it paid for before it magically became a right. You have a right to life meaning you can't just be killed off just because, not that someone else must provide food, shelter or care to ensure you live. That is tied to your other rights liberty to controlled your future and pursuit of happiness to provide yourself with what makes you happy. Property, money, education or poverty and disparage if that is your choice. Equality of access doesn't guarantee equality of outcome.
